We (VMFA-333) obtained F/A-18A there in 1989. Left our pristine F/A-18C in Beaufort and handed a ton of work when we arrived in Iwakuni. One (#9) was on jacks in horrible shape. We pieced it back together only to have it crash in some Japanese national park months later due to a faulty horizontal stab actuator.
I was stationed in Iwakuni in the mid 1970's. I looked on Google maps and I don't see a single building still standing that I recognize. I see they move the seawall further out into the bay. I was on what they called the "Wing Side" of the base with MAG 15 and 2 F4J squadrons. There were many Quonset huts at the time. Our mess hall was two large connected Quonset huts. The EM club, post office and the PX were Quonset huts. I still have some goods photos that I took there. The ordinance shop where I worked was a all metal Butler building. I have fond memories of Iwakuni. I would love to go back and see the changes.
If you ever go, you can fly directly to the air station since it now shares a civilian airport terminal and All Nippon Airlines flies there. How cool would that be? I last flew out on a freedom bird in 1990.
I've watched hundreds of carrier landings and I just noticed that I haven't ever seen a hornet land with its speed brake deployed. Kinda interesting. I guess you don't need them when the hook and cable do all the work.
