    I love the Hornet. Started with the F4S VF-151 (85-86), transition VFA-151 (86-87), VFA-27 (92-96), VFA-146 (99-02), VFA-154 (12-14). . . and many wondrous things between. It's all fun in the rear view mirror.

      Craig Clarke and C’s. The only people with Super Hornet Contracts that fly them is the Navy, and Australian Royal Air Force.

      @@DA3MADMEN Although he's flying another pilot's bird (MAJ Allen), you can clearly see his callsign on his visor cover..."DEEDGE", along with RAAF pilot wings, and of course the Australian flag on his upper arm. At 4:25, the two-seater's front seat clearly reads FLTLT D.J. MCLEOD with "DEEDGE" underneath. Short version...he's a Flight Lieutenant from the RAAF on exchange. Cheers.

    I thought Marines only flew the single seat version of the hornet?

    • @stephencannon3140
      @stephencannon3140 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thomas Freundl not at all. C or D models. Occasionally some very early A models but as the Navy transitions to EF and G super Hornet models some of the C models can get recycled and handed off to USMC units. D and F models are basically the same platform but the F is way more advanced technology. D models replaced A-6 and the F models replaced the F-14. F/A18 EFAnd G Super Hornet models handle pretty much all aerial combat tasking on the carrier. The only thing they don’t do is Airborne early warning and helicopter duties. Hornets and supers handle air defense, refueling, air- ground, air- air, everything that was done by four different mission aircraft are handled in one amazing platform....a true multi tasker!

    • @ThomasFreundl
      @ThomasFreundl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephencannon3140 I'm well aware of the Hornets and their legacies. I was just under the impression the Navy flies with RIOs and the Marines do not at least when it comes to the Hornets. I know the EA-6Bs were under the Marines and flew a 4 man crew, but that was very specific. These were legacy versions of the Hornets so they definitely weren't Growler models. I'm not an expect...just above average in my lay man's knowledge of the workings... still have a lot to learn though.

    • @stephencannon3140
      @stephencannon3140 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thomas Freundl they can fly single or solo. Just as the Navy models can my squadron ( the one in the video ironically) was a D unit...(All Weather Gun Squadron). We referred to the C as boat squadrons) even had one of our 12 aircraft converted to a control stick and set of throttles in the back. It was considered a treat to get to fly that aircraft. They could do the mission and let some of the WSO’s do some stick and throttle flying after they were done.

  • @zhiheshi8127
    @zhiheshi8127 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why do marines have Hornet? They don't have a carrier like navy to operate it.

    • @Большойчеловек-з6д
      @Большойчеловек-з6д 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marine squadrons fly off navy carriers

    • @stephencannon3140
      @stephencannon3140 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They may. Let be all carried based but the platform is the same. The strike fighter mission is the same whether USN or USMC. Since USN and USMC initial pilot training is the same the aircraft can be the same. Even land based squadrons still have to keep current on carrier qualifications and procedures. The F/A 18 training syllabus is the same core curriculum then you specialize in the mission of your squadron. Air-ground and Air-Air tactics are basically the same. The Marines have a little more focus on close air support (air-ground) but the F/A-18 does the same mission regardless of what branch it belongs to. The troops on the ground don’t care where the air support is coming from as long as it shows up.

    • @760dalewis
      @760dalewis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Putting the Hornets aside, and the fact that the Navy has to still drive them, the Lightning Carriers are an essential part of an USMC amphibious strike group. So technically since the navy doesn’t fly that many VTOL aircraft then these are Marine Corps carriers. However technically speaking the USMC is still part of the Department of the Navy, and all Marines past, present, and future will recognize the chain of command being under the Secretary of the Navy (after the President, and VP, and Sec of Defense)
