I liked Darren's technicality, Dan's musicality and the pianist was crazy. The rest of the sax players was just showing off.

....umm, negative. Jeff kashiwa was the only one playing the changes and utilizing those changes to voice lead to the eight chord. He also was the only one not relying on licks and tricks. AND he was holding back. Not sure how you thought he was showing off. Even kirk was doing his thing. Daren was never playing true changes and preferred to groove on (i assume) Bflat.

All that matters is if the audience enjoys it or not. The average listener doesn’t care what chord progressions you are utilizing as long as they are enjoying what they hear.

Doesn't matter. I get it, you're curious. But not about the right stuff. That kind of curiosity is what leads saxophone players (especially junior or amateurish players like you probably are) down a never-ending rabbit hole, spending all kinds of money unnecessarily. Advice: FORGET about what mouthpieces are being played, and just use your ears and learn to play.

ok first things first. Let's establish that the song is "Sugar" and the style is from Stanley Turrentine. Now I listened to that before coming over here and God my ears hurt now. I appreciate every musicians different interpretation/perspective of the music, but let's get something straight, the piano cords are the same. It's not altered, so adopting a solo from that, as professionals you should come up with something good, while holding the some original movements and standards established by Stanley Turrentine to bring it back to the actual song "Sugar". Ok, so based on that, Don, Jeff and Tom was somewhat comforting to listen to. Kirk my hero almost came down to zero. This is not nearly any piece of good work on a solo from him. Too much outside the cords, and then tried to come back in, made it safely, and then ran right back off again. Killed my ears off... Now as for Darren Rahn... hmm my oh my... hmmm oh boy Darren... was it possible for you to play anymore garbage than this? utter trash and what is upsetting me is that they had you start with that non-sense and dragging this lovely tune into the gutter for the others to try and pull it out. You failed to set the standard. You are a great musician and I have your albums, but this crap right here, never put this on a record. Your playing here wasn't just bad, it was disrespectful, and I'm hurt that you actually seemed proud after putting that rubbish out into the airwaves. And to add insult to injury, you played like you didn't want to stop. It was way too lengthy (given the crap being served). I guess you really cannot improvise in this jazz standard tune. Stay in your lane with the smooth grooves and i'd keep buying your records bro. Over and out!
