- Beautiful version of Sugar by The CTI all stars, led by flutist Hubert Laws. CTI records was a legendary Jazz label owned by Creed Taylor. Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, Ron Carter, Bob James, Deodato and many jazz greats recorded for this label.
Sugar is a jazz classic composed and recorded by the tenor sax player Stanley Turrentine in 1970 for CTI records.
Bob Malach introduces the tune smoothly and lyrically by playing alone on tenor sax before playing the theme with the band and giving a really strong and soulful solo.

Bob Malach is one of the baddest cats out there. Every time I hear this guy play he really puts his soul into every note. It's a real shame he's not more well known, I think I'll see him next time he comes to town.
Malach is so underrated! Why can't I get instructors like this?
Yeah. I have one of his CD’s and he played with Bruce Katz on a super high quality LP done by Audioquest
He gets massively outshined by Brecker and Bob Berg, but he is just as terrifying on the horn as they are. Malach played in Stern's band after Bob Berg died.

Good lord I have found a treasure with this video. I haven't heard of none of these cats.....and they are killin'. What a tribute to the great Stanley Turrentine. I've been loving this song since I first heard itwhen I was in high school in the early 70's. I am in heaven!!

What playing , what sound. The audio guys did a great job. No guitars trying to sound like 30 pieces.
His tone is like a breathy Brecker with way less false fingering/overtone use to the whole sound concept. That being said, they also have some similar blues line vocabulary/improvisatory ideas. Of course Brecker is on his own plane of existence, but this man is killin'.

Great job to all , sounds so good . I was 18 in 1970 playing congas in a local jazz band . And of course we played a lot of CTI 's music . Iam sooo glad i grew up in america. , and as a young black man during this time of such great jazz music for all of the world to enjoy ✌👌👍👏

Have been given the oportunity to hear Bob Malach with Mike Stern and his band a few times. Malach is def. on the level with Michael Brecker and Bob Mintzer etc. Underrated musician but not forgotten by the best in the business. They know his quality!
I used to see Bob playing with robben ford back in the late 80s at a club in New York called Mikells. He knocked me out then and has ever since.

Malach has actually included a few variations of Turrentine's original solo, from the 'Don't Mess with Mr. T' album. Malach is a real unassuming bad-azz! One of my personal favorites.

It's tough to step into this when Freddie's playing on this tune so iconic, but Brian Lynch is terrific, as usual.

Bobby Malach first caught my ear in the oddest of ways. Back in the late 90s I was watchinig that documentary "Hoop Dreams", great flick. As the movie ended, the soundrack had some totally 90's synth beat with a sax. I wasnt paying attention at all. Then I had no choice but to sit up - as all of a sudden from this boring synth beat was this guy I thought was a random studio sax player ripping off licks to rival the great Michael Brecker. In fact I sort of thought maybe it was Brecker and compelled to dig deeper (no Google back then). But this was a low budget docu. Eventually found out it was Ben Sidran doing the soundtrack and Bobby M on the horn. Took me weeks to transcribe the solo on my own sax (I am a novice at best) and I learned it was in some crazy key that couldnt have been more difficult with more sharps and flats you'd think could exists in runs. Not even close to simple blues solo. And Bobby was just flowing thru it like simple improv over goofy beat. From then I tried to find as much stuff as I could with Bobby on it. Mike Stern having him for a few years is further corroboration of Bobby's chops! Sorry too much typing - but so much respect for this guy. And first knowledge from the closing moments of a VHS movie in the 90's.

Amazing player (Bob Malach), how come we don't see him mentioned more often? I think he doesn't even have his own website, yet he's been around longer than many of the sax stars we see nowadays - Potter, Alexander, McCaslin etc.
For one thing, all that shit you're talking about takes a lot of time and money to set up, and some/many people don't have either to make it happen. Also, the world is FILLED with talented people all over that aren't "famous."

Looks like he’s playing an Otto Link mpc but that sound is so edgy and bright. Does anyone know if it’s Florida link that has been altered? Maybe more baffle added?
Yes I was wondering also what he was playing on I don't know if it's an auto link It could be a Florida because of the brightness because of the baffle and the floor the link but I'm not really sure It doesn't look like a link and it could be I don't know does anybody know?

Bob Mallach sounds great, there's a thin line for the public between music and practicing ? His solo is terribly loud 👎 it sacrifices his tone which is awesome at the beginning. Beautiful trumpet solo 😎👍 wow what a player.
