      That may be so but there are many Catholics in public life who are deplorable. Including several members of the Supreme Court, commentators, and political operatives. I no longer celebrate that anyone in a position of power has Christian values until I see what they do.

      @@HoradrimBR That’s just an excuse to look away from rampant inequality. Yes, some will have more than others but institutionalising cannot be Catholic. You cannot force equality but we can make it easier for the poor to improve their circumstances. The kind of capitalism prevalent in the US exploits the poor. Poverty is a cause of too much dysfunctions in society.

    Recently, when I expressed some of my concerns regarding Vance's stance on abortion, I was accused of even being a Biden supporter. I was basically just told to shut up because it was ok for Vance to say what he needed to say - even if it went against Church Teachings - just to get elected. My response was that God acts when we show Faith - not fear. Fear of losing an election is not the answer for excusing evils put forth by politicians.

And when “all we need is the Scriptures” comes about, you get at least hundreds- if not thousands- of denominations that can’t even agree if baptism is necessary! I am curious how much studying you did of your Catholic faith before you left the Church that Jesus established. Did you read the catechism? Early church fathers? I, too, was poorly catechized, but I studied my faith- and I’m still studying- before I looked at any other denominations, which again, can’t even agree on baptism… or “once saved, always saved…” or predestination…

      He's a conservative Catholic. Those two are very very liberal. Catholicism is naturally conservative.
      The best definition is the Catholic is towards the Left on Labour (the old left not the weird iteration of the left today.

    Thank you for bringing up the "abortion pill" issue with JD Vance. As it happens, I have deep roots in the world of HILLBILLY ELEGY (in a sense a book that owes something to James Webb's BORN FIGHTING about the Scots Irish culture and its beginnings and development here in the States.) Abortion is THE moral issue of our time. My concern is that the Dobbs decision (brilliantly researched and written by Justice Alito) came too late. Abortion had nearly fifty years to become a norm in American life. I did not sense jubilation at the parish where I attend Mass. Every Sunday there is a prayer for peace at Mass but not one for the end of abortion in America. Thank you for this posting.

    I seem to be on a journey from 'liberalism' to 'conservatism' in the non political sense and by tuning into Catholic Unscripted, it occurs to me that you're both acting as my midwives. Just about everything you say rubs me up the wrong way but I keep coming back to your channel with appalled fascination and after having watched your shows , I cannot deny that - so far - I have aways felt intellectually stimulated and more emotionally drawn into the Church.

      Well...I agree with you _pragmatically,_ in view of how the U.S. population _currently_ thinks, and the way judicial precedent _currently_ stands.
      But arguably, 14th Amendment "Incorporation" doctrine applies every bit as much to Unborn Rights as it does to the rights of racial minorities: "No State shall ... deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." Based on this amendment, even non-citizens ("any person") should have their right-to-life defended under the laws of each state, if even one person is so defended in that state.
      Of course, the current situation permits different states to adopt differing definitions of what qualifies as a "person," permitting unborn human beings to be excluded!
      But that situation is _unstable._ It relies upon the 14th Amendment not _already_ being "opinionated" as to the definition of the word "person" when that word is used in the text of the amendment, itself. Escaping "Incorporation" of the right-to-life for any group of persons requires the claim that the 14th doesn't _already limit_ states from including/excluding that group from being considered "persons."
      Now, you could never get away with state laws establishing (for example) that humans of a _particular skin color_ didn't qualify as humans. The 14th is one of the post-Civil-War "Reconstruction Amendments," and exists _for the explicit purpose_ of ensuring that enslaved persons are guaranteed the same rights in each state that the Federal constitution protects in all states.
      So: The 14th is already "opinionated." What remains is to establish what its "opinion" is, about the personhood of the unborn.
      Until birth, the unborn are _not_ considered _citizens_ of the United States: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." But notice that the text acknowledges that _persons_ get born or naturalized. This allows for the possibility that they are _already_ "persons" prior to their birth, just as immigrants who become naturalized citizens are _already_ "persons" prior to their naturalization. At the _absolute minimum,_ it says they are "persons" from the moment of birth, and thus any post-birth "abortions" are simply instances of homicide.
      ...aaaaand, that's where things stand.
      The way the U.S. Constitution was set up _prior_ to 14th Amendment Incorporation meant that, as a principled constitutionalist, one was _required_ to relegate matters regarding abortion "to the States, respectively, or to the People." (Amendment 10.)
      But _after_ the 14th Amendment, and in the absence of _Roe,_ we've entered a limbo-state which will eventually require resolution.

      Sr Nirmala MC, first successor to Mother Teresa after her death, was a Hindu convert. If Vance's wife is a deeply spiritual person she could comfortably convert - there is a long tradition of deep dialogue e.g Benedictines - Bede Griffith, Henri le Saux, Abbe Monanchin and, centuries before, the Jesuit Nobilini. Mahatma Gandhi had a profound respect for authentic Christianity as St John Paul II had for him as a holy man.

      France is a favourite, and we have visited some of the most beautiful cathedrals and churches here in previous years, but not with dad as his age makes it difficult to do anything that isn’t very local. We go to a pleasant NO mass in the village. Katherine and Marks family’s will be holidaying together in Gozo next month, so expect the microphone to appear again! 😄🙏

      If Katherine were Anglican and thus "naturally" open to the ministery of orders, I think she would make for a great bishop. But thank God she is Catholic, barred from orders, and thus only free to subject us to her relentless femininity in "ordinary" ways. One thing is to perceive the political and it's implcations for and relations with the supernatural, the other thing is to do polítics as a politician, even a decent Catholic promising one, because this politician, he or she, will have to get his/her hands dirty and we all know, as human Nature comes in two temperamental modes and dynamics, men tend to stand dirty hands somewhat better, though they also hope for clean water to come along, SO they can wash up and go further at the same thing but now with again clean hands...No offence😢

    Presbyterian, I abhor the

    Him. We don't need an earthly

    Because the attempt happened on July 13, I went to the Gospels and looked up all the 7:13’s. The gospel of John 7:13 (7:12-13), was spot on but in our time, it’s the progressives instead.

    I don't think it's fair or prudent to knock Pence. I also think there is a danger of sanctifying Vance because he is a (newbie, let's face it) Catholic.

    J D Vance says he will not be like Vice President Pence: Vance will certify false electors if Trump asks him to. What sort of Catholic is that? Is premeditated sin ok now, provided you are conservative?

      John, you're claiming that Vance asserted he would certify "false" electors; i.e., electors that _he believed_ were not the correct ones.
      But Vance didn't use that term at all, nor did Trump ever ask Vice President Pence to certify "false" electors. Trump didn't even ask Vice President Pence to _not_ certify "true" electors. Trump asked Vice President Pence to delay certifying electors which Trump _believed_ to be false electors, until such time as their "false"/"true" status could be established _on the merits._ (This would require findings-of-fact which never yet occurred in the judicial systems of the courts of the relevant states, because the lawsuits were thrown out, _not_ because of any findings on the merits, but for procedural reasons; e.g., lack of standing.)
      Pence refused to do so, of course, because it would put the election timeline outside the Constitutional-and-legal timeline, posing a threat to the _ethos_ of "orderly transfer of power." I firmly believe Pence was _correct_ to take that approach, much as Nixon did he conceded to J.F.K. (In 1960, J.F.K.'s team "stole" the election with Lyndon Johnson's ballot-stuffing operation in Texas. This isn't widely recognized by the general public, but for those in the know, it's hard to dispute. Nixon sure as h*ll believed it was stolen.)
      Again: I think Pence did the right thing. BUT, the presumption that Pence couldn't have done otherwise without committing mortal sin presumes a _lot_ of facts not-in-evidence! ...and so would extending such a claim preemptively to Vance.
      When people claim that Trump was asking Pence to certify "false" electors, or to _not_ certify "true" electors, they are engaging in tendentious mind-reading: They're implicitly asserting that Trump's loud claims about the election proceeded not from _mistaken belief_ but _willful dishonesty._ To this day, there remains zero evidence that Trump believed he'd "actually" lost in the battleground states, where "actually" is defined as: If _only_ the legally-cast ballots were counted, and illegally-cast ballots were excluded. This, of course, is how nearly everyone thinks elections _should_ work, and how _most_ non-politician Americans believe that elections DO work! (Trump, although he'd been a politician for four years already, still hadn't learned better.)
      Apart from inexperience, Trump's other huge problem was that he was unable to have any experts in election law on his team; they all refused to work for/with him. He was stuck with Sidney Powell, who neither understood election law, nor had sufficient experience to recognize the various disinformation psyops levied against the Trump team to delay its legal challenges until time ran out.
      G.H.W. Bush, to name only one example, wouldn't have had that problem: He'd have had teams of lawyers in every state with lawsuits to prohibit the stage-setting that the DNC achieved with various Secretaries-of-State in the nine months prior to the election. An old CIA hand, he'd have dismissed all the dumb rumors about voting-machine software, and even the probably-correct-but-unlitigatable circumstantial evidence of ballot-stealing and ballot-stuffing. On Day One, he'd have started climbing the appeals-chain to establish standing for cases on the basis of irreparable harm (given the certification calendar).
      But that's "Insider Kung Fu." Trump, being a consummate Outsider, had no such Insider Kung Fu in his arsenal.
      Anyway, if Vance says something like, "I won't certify electors when the actual correct slate of electors is unknown and could possibly still be resolved," that would be an eminently reasonable thing to say.
      It wouldn't be a declaration of intent to "certify false electors," and certainly wouldn't be a mortal sin.

    I wonder what Fr Jason Charron, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic priest who led prayers at the Trump rally, makes of Vance. JD Vance has been one of the severest critics of US military aid to Ukraine.

      This is naive beyond belief.
      Going into negotiations from a position of “we don’t want a war” will be seen by Putin as weakness and he will take advantage of it.

    Trump picked him because Trump will only hire second rate people who MUST rely on Trump for everything and cannot be independent. Vance was a nobody, pulled out of nowhere by Trump to be a Senator from Ohio. While other Republicans (the governor, the other senators, etc) won their elections in Ohio by more than 20 points, Vance ran rather weakly winning only by 6 points. Without Trump's backing, he would have been nowhere. Trump refuses to have seasoned, competent people around him because they might object to some of his more daft moves. Trump is very weak that way. We used to have the best men we could find running the country. Now, the only qualification for office will be total, fanatical loyalty to Trump above all things. Vance is very ambitious, and has a good "story" but honestly he is not qualified to be Vice President. Since Obama, we have had a sea change in politics. Obama started elevating crass political hacks to major offices, and now Trump bypasses competence for personal loyalty. Not a good development. I do think that Vance might eventually get sick of being a lapdog to Trump, and will rebel a bit. He has that shred of dignity left, and may have some spine left. Of course, Biden and Kamala are ten thousand times worse, but still. It would be nice to have competence back in government.

    have you checked Vance's history??? BEFORE hailing him? Please do research before . Not suggesting negative but seems like good journalism. Politicians are notoriously fickle
