So funny how small details can make all the difference. Honestly adding those lines with the marker made it all come alive for me. One of those, "you know it when you see it" moments. Also, the black base coat of the Empire falcon gave it a slightly more bluish tone which honestly fits the color pallet of Empire vs the warmer tones of ANH. Great job.

I would love to see you build Bandai's 1/144 scale Jeti's Star fighter with the hyperdrive ring . It has a tricky paint scheme ,that they provide a lot of the stickers for. It would be awesome seeing you use your expertise to pull it off. I found the kit on Amazon for under $30.00 US

I'd like to imagine that work that Han and Chewie were trying to quickly finish up at the Hoth base (once they finally had some time and access to a good docking bay) was the tail end of a major refit that gave the Falcon more weight capacity (thus the extra landing gear). But, in the work, something got rewired and it interfered with the smooth operation of the hyperdrive :)

Lovely build, been humming and hawing about buying one of these smaller Falcons, but no more. The detail is too good to pass up, shame the crony virus has put up the price a good bit... I assembled the 1/16 AMT/ERTL Millenium Falcon a long time ago. Stuck it in the ceiling. Good times.
The old MPC kit which was re-released by ERTL after they merged isn't that big.
The Bandai 1/72, the "Perfect Grade," is actually a little bit bigger.
I'd have to look it up for the exact size (ERTL operates at weird fractions) but the cutaway Millennium Falcon kit that's also an MPC/ERTL might be the biggest mass-market release. The cutaway according to the Amazon listing is about an inch longer than the Bandai Perfect Grade model so it's a little more than 1/72 scale depending on how they figured out the theoretical size of the Falcon.
The biggest Falcon you or I could build without needing to reinvent it is the kit you subscribe to a magazine to get. It's a 1:1 recreation of the nearly 3-ft (33-34 inches?) Millennium Falcon model created for The Empire Strikes Back which was the definitive version of the Millennium Falcon until The Force Awakens when they went back and reused the original design of the 1977 model and merged it with aspects of the 1980 TESB version.
Doesn't matter much to me, honestly. Any model over $100 is expensive to me! LOL
It's cheaper to be into retrovideogames than virtually anything else. The old hobbies (board games, model kits, comic books, etc.) have gotten very expensive. The reasonably-priced entry level things just don't exist anymore. Kids have an easier time getting into the stuff from Japan than most of the Western hobbies. The old stuff is aimed too much at old fogies (anyone over late 20s) right now which is partly why it's so expensive and those hobbies are generally dying or existing mainly from online stores selling out of warehouses. Darn shame -- it used to be nice go to a local store and look at these things in person before you had to commit to buy.
@@AvengerII IKR? I used to scour Michaels and Toys R Us looking at Revell and ERTL space models to set up. I got my first 1989 1/32 Batwing out of a General Thrift Store where I live. But then they got replaced by the snap on models in Wal-Mart, if they brought them at all. Now only specialty stores carry them along with the Gunplas.
The one model that I really wanted was a Babylon 5 Alliance White Star. You could get the Narn, Centauri and even the Earthforce Starfurys, but not that one.

Great video and great ideas thank you. I'm going to darker gray tint some top individual panels and paint engine white, apply blue wash mainly in corners, then edge highlight charcoal

They added more landing gear for ESB because when they made the large Falcon set it needed more support.
There are quite a few differences in the greeble detail between the two as well.

great model, going to be building one myself. I always find it odd that people and model companies tend to do the engines on the falcon in a blue colour......yet in the movies it was white. the only shot I can think of where it had a blue tint was in the special edition where the cgi version took off from docking bay 94

This is great. I ordered 2 of these to build with my 9 year old daughter. She loves Chewie and the Falcon. I built the perfect grade and she really wanted to do one too. So this size will be great for us to do one each together. Your video here will be a very helpful tool to use with her to help her see techniques. Great channel. Great content. Excellent skill and talent you have.

the liner you're using, Staedtler, is water resistant once it dries. Yes you can whipe it off if you use alcohol or something, but you can use water based washes on top without problems. I used those exact ones all my life, cause i could work with water colors on top of them, and they didn't smudge. They are great.

It's crazy the amount of detail that some of today's kits have. This makes my old kit by MPC(?) that was several times the size, look like a toy by comparison.
Awesome builds! Those washes and small blaster details make all the difference. That looks like a lot of labours work. Between the two versions, I'm liking the "New Hope" version a bit more. How long did it take from start to finish to assemble and paint both models? Keep up the great work.
Thank you! Yeah I think I prefer the ANH version too, the colour just looks nicer on the eye. I'd say these took about 3-4 hours in total, not including the time it takes for paint to dry etc.

I think Bandai was accidentally mixing the sprues up. I ordered two kits that were supposed to be from ANH but one was actually from ESB when I opened them. Nice little kits.
It is a shame that they didn't have options for landing gear. I know there are 3D printed options for building them, though. I was thinking about making a small dio of a ship dealer's yard that had a couple of used ANH ships next to a new ESB ship model with a tiny sign saying, "Easier to Land! More Gear!"

Yeah. I love bandai kits but was kinda worried about the smaller stuff, but i am somewhat more confident after seeing the builds. And i really thought doing the red and grey panels would be much more of a beast. Keep it up, it really helps us less skilled types lol

I'm a miniature painter and I find it's all about practice and being chill and mindful of your brush strokes. Know theres always ways to fix mistakes so let go of insecurities and go for it.
Thank you! I find that bracing your hand against something always helps. You'll often see me resting it against the model or the desk as I paint fine details.
try getting some magnifier lens, it helps me A lot
Realistically, the TESB 1980 model has a better landing gear set-up (makes more sense where weight distribution is concerned) BUT I still prefer the 1977 version. I like the overall look of the original model better.
There are actually a lot of detail differences (which they go into excruciating detail on other websites) and the 1977 version comes off better in details which is why it was used as the basis for the SE edition CG models of the Falcon and the CG models in D!$ney W@rZ. The Sequel Tragedy merged aspects of both the Original Trilogy main models into one ship that was basically the body of the 5-ft 1977 model with the landing gear from the revised 3-ft (well, 32-inch) 1980 model.
The shape was also different in that the 1977 ship was more hamburger shaped and the 1980 Falcon is a bit leaner and flatter in cross-section. Of course, as a kid you don' t notice these things until 40 years later! LOL
I suspect aBandai might yet release accurately detailed higher scale (1/144 and 1/72) model kits of the The Empire Strikes Back version of the Millennium Falcon. Gotta milk that license dry! Master Replicas sure did with all the variants they released of the lightsaber props AND DL-44 blaster!
Love your channel. Do you use the Vallejo paint straight out of the bottle or do you thin it?
I use the Model Air paint straight out of the bottle, but sometimes thin it if the airbrush is objecting to it.
I’ve built both models, but forgot to glue the inside pieces of rear upper hull before gluing clamshell. : (

What sort of brush do you use when painting the panels? It looks like such a quality this brush yet such a fine point.
I use a Monglon 2720-0 brush I just found at my local stationery store. Not sure how available they are internationally. They're really nice brushes though, they told a fine point well!
The kit paint instructions indicate Flat white (55%) + Light Gull Grey (45%) fothe light body grey. Is this the combination that represents the White Grey that you used?

I really do enjoy your videos.
I’ve been having a long old debate about one of my models that I have in stock. This model is the 1/350 scale Resin Medical Frigate. Every build, and there aren’t that many that I’ve seen, are built with an out of scale Falcon!? The Frigate in itself is a massive vessel but when builders add these bigger Falcons the Frigate Looks Kinda Goofy? My only rational for this is that builders are trying to recreate the the end scene for the Empire Strikes Back? However, the one aspect of this scene that really has to be observed is that everything is in Forced Perspective? Every Vessel is Exaggerated in its scale and perspective!?
What I’m trying to say is that for the Medical Frigate this Bandai Kit is actually the Correct size for its larger counterpart. Studio Accurate is not always factually correct! The is another ironic observation I’ve made and that this modern Falcon Kit marries up perfectly with the old MPC’s Hoth Rebel Base Set and in Particular the Rebel Transport. So in a Diorama the Transport can now be included as it is approximately 1/350 Scale.
I bought myself a second hand Bandai Falcon Kit to test my theory and I’m pretty spot on! So if you ever want to Factually Partner Up Your 1/350 Scale Frigate with a Millennium Falcon, then the Bandai Kit is Your Best Option!

The paint jobs are nice on both of them.
The TESB Falcon should be grungier because it IS 3 years older at that time and has seen more several battles since the Death Star I event. That would take a toll on the paint job as well as Solo's lack of tidiness speaking of which -- I just don't buy that the Millennium Falcon evolved from "that Ship" in the movie Solo. It's another one of those things where they felt compelled to redesign too much and that concept just doesn't fit well into the existing Star Wars universe -- much like anything created for Star Trek after 2001 doesn't fit the earlier TV shows and movies, either.
[Actually, the only Star Wars Disney film I've bothered to buy in UHD was Rogue One. I just don't like the Sequel Trilogy which is why I'm referring to it as "the Sequel Tragedy." So much potential, so squandered because of political agendas and the fact these films were edited in attempt to appeal more to the mainland Chinese audiences. They failed, PERIOD.
[The Mandalorian streaming series is supposedly doing better but I honestly haven't watched after the pilot which I felt was lackluster. Fingers crossed that they don't screw up Boba Fett but I've been hearing a lot of people are not enjoying the second season -- which Fett will appear in more than a cameo; he's had one face shot scene OUT OF ARMOR so far -- as much. I don't really think Disney knows what they're doing at this point. It's kind of being made up as they go along....]
I'm kind of disappointed that Bandai reused the same basic mold here and didn't demonstrate more of the differences between the 1977 Falcon and 1980 version. The 1980 Falcon has a lot of detail differences. Bandai basically only changed the underside and landing bays here between the 1/350 releases. The shape of the 1980 Falcon in cross section from the front is flatter and there are a lot of detail differences around the pods/docking ports on the sides because they simply could not find model pieces that fit the scale of the 32-inch model that were duplicates of the 5-ft original. Even the shape and lengths of the cockpit are different between the 2 versions of the shooting miniatures. That's where the differences in details started to pop -- they could not find all the corresponding greeblies used on the 5-fter in scale for the 32-inch revised 1980 Millennium Falcon. They never figured fan modelers would be that anal and scouring old magazines and making of books to accuratize their own models of the Millennium Falcon.
Honestly, I like virtually everything better on the original 5-ft model now that I've seen the differences. The main reason the 5-ft Falcon became a "back-up" model after TESB was because of its bulk. It was harder to set up (very heavy) and you couldn't do the rolling movements as easily with it as the 3-fter and frankly unless you need to go in closer as the 3-ft model was fine for most of the required shots. I honestly don't know where the 5-ft model would have had to been used in TESB other than possibly Cloudy City landing and take-off as well as the rescue of Luke in TESB. I do recall reading somewhere that they did in fact retrofit the original 5-ft model to have the 5-legged landing gear as well. It's possibly the 5-ft model wasn't used after TESB. The TESB model was still preferred for at least the flight sequences because of the lighter bulk and ease of moving it around. They found out the same thing for the original Star Trek features. Unless they were doing beauty shots, they tended to limit use of the 200-lb (?) 8-ft "hero" model of the Starship Enterprise (1979). It was a pain to set up and for far-off shots it was better to use smaller models.
