Really miss when movies could take their time to establish a shot, the fear and despair in the eyes of the men as they watch the Teutonic horde approuching. These days it would be jump cuts all to hell, dramatic zooms and other unecessary shit.
Art moves in cycles, like most things. Especially since everything is inspired by something else, so it's only really a matter of time before stuff like this comes back around. I would argue that even back then, really, really great stuff like this was rare.
Alexander Temirkanov's recording of the original film score is great. Not only do we get it in Stereo, but he has a full modern orchestra. Sergei Prokovfiev got gyped when Stalin demanded to see the movie before they had finished editing it. He was rushed into recording the soundtrack with only a 16-piece orchestra, instead of the full one that he would have had in a few months, when it was scheduled. So basically, the soundtrack that the movie came out with was terrible. It was supposed to be big and epic, and thanks to Stalin, it was reduced to a a patchwork. When you see the restored film combined with the new soundtrack, it brings the movie back to it's epic status. Prokovfiev's score was the first time a whole orchestral score was composed for a film. Prior to that, pre-recorded or just a few musical selections were used by Hollywood and other film studios. Prokovfiev was literally the first epic orchestral film score of it's kind. Without him, there may not have been Bernard Hermann, Jerry Goldsmith, Eric Korngold, or John Williams.
Glad you did this! But I heard that Sovinfilm actually did a 80th anniversary showing, where the newly recorded Yuri Temirkanov score was added to a newly restored and cleaned up film -- but I think they forgot sound effects, because it's just the music and voice tracks. Using this HD footage, and the Termikanov soundtrack, PLUS the sound effects is what I'd like to see done to the rest of the film. You have given us a brief taste of how much greater this film can be!
Sounds are good but the most important thing in this scene music. Exactly because of music there weren't any sounds how i think. And there was a moment with singing germans that in this video wasn't in timing and quite
Well, no -- that was John Williams. He actually was inspired by the battle on the Ice music, as were many other film composers. Listen to the soundtrack from Battle Beyond The Stars by James Horner -- he totally ripped it off, though as he explained it, it was the "scratch score" which is assembled roughly using suggestions from the director, and the film composer then bases their score on the emotion, rhythm, and style of the music from the scratch score. In Horner's case, though, he left a bit more of the scratch score in, thanks to the fact that he was doing the scores for Krull & Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan at the same time, and was pretty much not getting much sleep!
This is a wonderful job, both visually and sonically. The sound on the original is so poor that it undermines the action - but you have improved it almost beyond recognition. It's a pity it ends so suddenly., though you've captured the most interesting bit of the battle, I think.
Guess where (and how) Alexander Nevsky is related to me? My YDNA line is Italian nobility from Naples/Venice Kingdoms OR my mother's paternal Greek nobility families (Petrocochino-Mavrocordatos)? Evidence from MytrueancestryDNA data.
Only problem is that the music has gotten pushed really far back into the mix when Prokofiev's score musically adds many of the background sounds in the music. I like what you did, but would push the music up in the mix and the rumbling horses down. Nice job
I really love what you’ve done but at times Prokofiev’s music is pushed a bit too far into the back. I really really miss it in the from below close shot of the Teutonic riders, the choral there is fantastically climactic and menacing, much more than the noises of horses. If you ever wanted to change this (push the music more to the front), it would be perfect! ❤ Thanks anyway though!
The author has a talent! So spoil the music with trash from the sounds of the wind, the trampling of horses, prayers that do not exist in the film, which drown out the music. What is all this for? It's all reflected in the music!

Just realised that 'Battle of the Mounds' from Conan the Barbarian (1982) was inspired by this, especially the part from 4:19 to 4:40
It's very awesome when you watch the movie for the first time through and they introduce the Germans and Conan instantly comes to mind.
YES -- I noticed that, too.

Пусть это и фантазия или пропаганда, но выполнена она качественно. И фильм даже с художественной точки зрения культовый.

Apparently steven Spielberg didn't use this as inspiration for the jaws theme
The Jaws theme was inspired by act 4 of Dvorak's 9th symphony

не было бы тогда и нас. Поэтому странно от тебя слышать надежды на победу рыцарей. Мало кому обычно хочется, чтобы его предков убили)
