@@Unicysisbut wasn’t it Jack Dalton who killed Mr Vinnicombe? The man following Den I think was just a henchman for the firm, but it’s possible that the daffodil killers were working for Dalton.
Guy with the radio is Mr Vannicombe the Boss of the Firm wanting Den dead, when Den walks off he is confronted by an Assassin from the Firm, attempting to escape him he encounters friends of his, they kill the Assassin with Den catching a bullet (as evidenced by his blood being found there), his friends then get him patched up and get him out of the country, meanwhile Dalton kills Vannicombe secretly and has his teeth knocked out so he can be identified as Den but Dalton always knew Den was alive and would jump at the chance to have him found.
Guy with the walkie talkie is actually Gregory Mantel, Mr Vinniecombe was never seen on screen.... which I think made the Firm even more sinister.... the mystery and fear of where he was
You were right in a way, given that that's what was established in 2003. The writers of Den's comeback seemed to confuse Mantel with Vinnicombe, while Dalton was never mentioned in the '80s.

the guy with the radio was mr mantel not vinnicombe who was never seen on screen and I think it was unrealalistic to make out the top boss got murdered because he was a member of a crime family he had brothers who surly would want revenge thus a gangland feud
I was born in '89, but I know all about Den Watts.... How on earth did anyone expect him to actually be dead even back then? The gun was more like a pea-shooter. Looking back, I don't know how anybody could have been satisfied with this considering how iconic he was.
Originally the scene showed a 100% dead Den in the canal but the BBC cut the final scene prompting Julia Smith and Tony Jordan (the original producers) to walk away from the show in disgust.
It's a shame they felt the need to take out Leslie Grantham's indiscretions on the character. Den's progression into an outright villain was a believable transition but it's sad that they took him in that direction. His original exit stemmed from him avenging a rape, while his second one was a direct result of him attacking a woman.
Was the guy following Den shot aswell? Or just Den? Amazing scene anyway and it's just such a shame EastEnders don't produce gritty drama like this anymore (except for some of DTC's recent work).
wish there were more videos following this shooting like more canal scenes and the episodes where den was on the run before he handed himself in his last day in the sqaure before he went to the wine bar if anyone has these episodes and they could download them onto here that would be great
No, because if he died he wouldn't have come back. Get in the real world. If someone dies, they cannot come back. Den was shot in the arm, he fell in the canal, escaped, went to Jan Hammond, who then planted his ring in the canal to make everyone think he was dead. One of the Firm Members then got shot and dumped in the canal, Vinnicome or something, and Jan helped Den flee to Spain. Vinnicomes body was the one they found and Sharon identified, but decomposition made it hard to indentify.

Was there a witness to this shooting who informed the police? Otherwise how did anyone know he’d been shot and supposedly killed if a body wasn’t found?
When Den came back in 2003, it was revealed that Dalton, who had ordered his murder, knew he was alive and had someone else killed to pass off the body as Den's. But why? If he knew the hit had failed, why not just say, "oh well, at least he's gone for good" and move on? It makes no sense that Dalton and The Firm would keep the secret of Den's faked death - and even assist by having someone murdered in his place - for no advantage. Surely it would've made more sense for Den to have returned without The Firm being aware that he had survived the shooting? Since they knew, there was no point in him having to stay away and hide the fact that he survived from Sharon.
Dalton killed mr Vinnicomb for failing to kill den plus to take over the firm it was more about a power take over rather than dens murder. Also with gangsters its a lot about appearance if you try and kill someone and fail and let them get away you lose face n respect so letting Den live in Spain solved all daltons worries. He was capable of murder and fear. Plus and probably more important than anything was he went against Mr Vinnicombs orders he was dens pal they went to school together grew up together vinnicomb went left when he left school in to the firm den sort of went right into the pub game. When namiah was threatened for protection Money she ran to the vic to call the police den explains theres always been a firm she accuses him of being friends with them. He explains he grew with some and some go into villainy some into the pub game. Den was never a villain he was just a bit crooked Like Del-boy and when serious villains wanted a favour boy Den and del-boy couldn’t handle it. The first time we saw den scared was when the main boss wanted den to hide a bank robber that robbed a bank in walford high street. Den was about to teach Andy a lesson for getting it on with Angie is the pub then the phone rang and Den went white. Kicking lofty and wicksy out the pub for a week while they “looked after Den’s cousin”
It was ridiculous to bring Dirty Den back from the dead, anyone can see that it was him who got shot, as if the couple with the flowers would really shoot the man behind him by accident.

Not really. Its an automatic pistol, fitted with a silencer & held at an angle. The casing would have been ejected & then picked up by either the man or woman.
As if the lure of face ache Michelle waiting for him would put him on the straight and narrow, a ridiculous prospect. Den was basically a child sex abuser in this storyline, when she tries to kiss him eugh!!
i do think the acting and characters was good.but i dont think many actors are completely original and unique.eg that sort of storyline was in dynasty jr joan collins etc was shot n came back.or similar storyline.i think alot of actors or story line writers get the characters n scripts from other scripts characters etc.n sort of change them a bit so u think that character or storyline is original.
Ive never liked eastenders or any soap to be honest theyre brain dumbing but I have a question, do all eastenders characters that leave the show die in the show?
Michelle was so beautiful and gentle in dens years why they turned her into an old hag like her mother in the Mitchell’s years it didn’t suit her. What i don’t get is how thick the firm were they had the perfect way of getting Wilmot-brown for going against them and raping Kathy. When den set the fire with brad and the police hounded their activities. They threatened to set Den up either with 3 years for arson or 10 years for attempted murder why didn’t they set wilmot brown up for insurance fraud he owed a great deal of money to the brewery and others. They could’ve said he was also trying to hide evidence of the rape. Then wilmot brown gets done for rape arson and insurance fraud. Plus they would own den for ever he could’ve then run off with michelle and Vicki

As if the lure of face ache Michelle waiting for him would put him on the straight and narrow, a ridiculous prospect. Den was basically a child sex abuser in this storyline, when she tries to kiss him eugh!!
Lol that was so lame. £2 spent on special effects.
This was aired a long time ago!
haha ino what a prick :P
i do think the acting and characters was good.but i dont think many actors are completely original and unique.eg that sort of storyline was in dynasty jr joan collins etc was shot n came back.or similar storyline.i think alot of actors or story line writers get the characters n scripts from other scripts characters etc.n sort of change them a bit so u think that character or storyline is original.
and phil too.
Ive never liked eastenders or any soap to be honest theyre brain dumbing
but I have a question, do all eastenders characters that leave the show die in the show?
