Milk Fed Veal raising

- Delft Blue Farms in Canada have been raising calves in group housing settings since 1981.
This video shows the process of calves being assembled from local farms in a receiving barn where the animals are weighed, checked, vaccinated. They are then divided into groups of similar weights to be distributed to company or contracted farms to be raised as milk fed veal.
In this particular video, the calves are being shown delivered to a company farm, where they are housed on flexible plastic slats made from recycled plastic.
The calves have 24 hour access to an "automated cow" where they drink milk through nipples. Most calves would find these nipples themselves eventually, but a technician makes sure that all the calves are made aware of the source of the milk.
The calves intake is controlled and monitored by a special ear tag that monitors the calf's intake each time they feed for the automatic milk machine.
Looks like a nice, neat tidy, operation. Calves are happy and healthy, facilities are clean and well managed. Anyone who had a clue about what they were talking about would never say a negigive comment about this operation. Especally with their mouth full.
Humans have the UNIQUE ability to validate their actions to avoid personal change:)
ive been working on farms for 5 years now rearing calves and milking cows. calves dont care who or what feeds them they will always be happy as long as they are fed same with cows as long as the are milked they dont worry about their calves. this is a very tidy system and i like how it is run

At least these calves are treated well unlike the other ones
you have an awesome set up
That's a pretty clean facility.
Congratulations to the owner of this fine farm, the animals are very happy and contented, i hope you are making a decent profit, you deserve it.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE veal. About the calves...hmm. They live their entire lives in crates, and dont know better...so why tell them :) If they have a problem with that, they can write to me...LOL
They are hungry and as soon as they are fed they stop completely - never to be heard again unless the feeder breaks down. mother = feed.
very nice operation, a great help in the struggle to feed people! get your priorities straight, people>animals!!
Sounds pretty high tech with feeding and such. How do you know when it's time to actually slaughter for meat? Is there a certain age when veal meat is considered ready or does it vary. Do you also have a high tech way for evalutaing when they're ready. Interesting stuff. I also like the fact that you've created an interesting conversation in the comments.
Nice
very true
and at my school, (military school) exercise is a big part of everything. it can usually keep you out of trouble too, instead of getting detention or a write-up you do pushups lol.
the best way to lose weight though is to find a lot of healthy snacks frequently. eat little and often. it speeds up your metabolism, and when coupled with exercise can make you lose weight fast without being unhealthy or skipping meals which does the opposite.
You should work on a farm for a few weeks. I bet you would be one of the people in the slam videos beating the crap out of a calf. I am impressed with this operation and glad to see a video of something other than a crate. I will get some veal tomorrow. It is delicious.

This is a very professional, clean operation from the video. Keep it up!
Tgy
nice video what feeding system are you using
Tiger
they really posted a Doja Cat music video and thought we wouldn't notice
your fowken idiot it is video about cows not music video about sinjer lol u r sooooooooooooo stupid
oh... sorry!
Again, thanks for explaining :-)
This faciity is not as clean as when I was responsible for it. The people handling these calves are trained animal health technicians. They actually like animals and also realize that young claves do not respond well to prods, wacks etc... it is just counter productive!
Calves in group housing in USA are being shipped at 18-19 weeks at around 450 lb. Also the amount of feed intake per calf is monitored by an electronic reader attached to one ear which registers and controls the maximum amounts each calf can drink. This is all recorded and monitored live by computer
Why not let the mother cow milk them for a few months ?
I do eat meat, beef, pork, chicken. I do not eat veal, lamb, etc. My dad hunted. I grew up on a farm. I believe ALL animals should be well cared for, even if they are raised for food purposes, until the time they are taken/killed for food. I also feel anyone that eats veal, lamb, etc should have to AT least work a week in the barn caring for the baby animals. Their crys will haunt your dreams, believe me. AND most everyone that "loves" veal / lamb will come away with a different outlook.
Wow, usually the calves are kept in a crate in the dark till time to off them.
Rocketryman False
Rocketryman that's absolutely not true.
@@dzlf2504 It's true friend. Did a documentary on cattle slaughter.
@@Mike45-47Q It's true friend. Did a documentary on cattle slaughter. Seen it with my own eyes.
Rocketryman well they're not doing it right. That's inhumane.
Well let me begin by saying I HAVE WORKED on a farm, and have been brought up around animals. As for as farm facilities go this one is very clean /animals well kept, HOWever, I do not eat baby animals. I'm not against hunting, or eating meat, but I do draw the line at eating "baby" animals, as I do not feel this is right. I believe anyone that eats veal, or lamb, should have to AT least work in a veal barn for a week. It would change their outlook, and I'd bet many would give up veal / lamb.
well that's yummy. I'm going to buy more veal then.
i know very well that eating meat can have adverse affects on the body if consumed in excessive amounts, especially at an old age and i plan to stop eating meat if i reach a very old age, but for someone who is growing a lot eating meat is essential, it has a lot of energy inside of it that's not fake energy like caffeine, eating celery is a negative calorie. it takes more energy to digest celery than you get from it. but in the near future, i'm going to keep eating my balanced portions
I do think killing an animal so young is terrible (although this is what routinely happens to chickens) but these calves are happy and comfortable. They clearly aren't abused, as shown by their interest in the cameraman and it's true that an uncomfortable cow will moo. Ours would moo when it got close to feeding time and when they were weaned. These calves aren't mooing.
Yea people react with their emotions rather than their brain. Some of these comments speak to the ignorance of the masses. They will eat the foot but complain that it isn't running free.. as if people hunt them across the great plains to bring them to their table. These animals are in good condition for being bred as food.
This isn't that bad at all. I still don't eat veal, but the animals are not being disrespected (at least in comparison to what is out there)and th facility is clean and spacious.
In that case what do you suggest carnivores live on?
at the end there I was surprised about letting the calfs get milk so long. Here on our farm in Norway we starting to give the calfs dryfeding and grass in about 1 1/2 month and stop feeding whit milk.
so... what do you think, is it more profit to give the calfs milk so long as 2-3 months, or the way we do it in Norway?
Intersting vid btw;)

@MoneyOverYours And a lot of people don't eat veal.
Calves in make a noise when they are hungry. On automatic machines they are never hungry so once they are fed the frist time they never make another noise -- When they arrive at the farm they have only had water or electrolytes when traveling -- Young calves don't travel well with full stomachs.
Please don't judge me if i am wrong here, but are some of these cows kept in the dark?
V good
Finally a veal farm that treats calves properly, I don't condemn those who eat veal, so long as the veal they eat comes from a place like this.
you dont have to kill fi eat there is no proper way of murdering anyone that did not want to die how would u like it done to u
Is that a double deck trailer

Serious question to anybody who knows. Whats the difference between a Cow calf & an African buffalo calf? They look the same, can somebody please answer my question? Thank u
SANSOOBOXER different species mate. Like comparing a tiger cub to a lion cub
No they don't look the same
@Emmerara there are many types of veal from bob veal, which is only a few days old, to rose veal, which is around 35 weeks old. Most lamb is around 3 to 5 months (13 to 21 weeks ish). so eating lamb but not veal, depending on the veal, is kinda hypocritical.
We killed two pigs right in front of their litter mates. The remaining pigs didn't notice or care. And I believe that animals are typically stunned before anything happens, so I'm not entirely sure how they are supposed to be aware.
👍🐄👍
DK
@ wbjames veal calves are usually slaughtered at only 22 weeks of age. I used to work for strauss veal feeds and we usually kept the calves 10 days-22 weeks
@Emmerara
Well, if you dont want a calf to be taken a way from its mother, you consumers have to stop demanding cheap milk, if farmers recived just 10ppl more, they wouldent need to produce as much milk to try and make a living off it and therefore they could keep the calves with the cows for a few months. Here in the uk, the milk price is the same as production price, over 2/3 of brittish dairy farmers have gone out of business due to low milk prices. I hope you can sort of see what i mean.

It is definitely not true, "that these calves have antibioitics pumped into them at all times". Some may get sick in the first few weeks when thay are adjusting to their new environment and in this case antibiotics would be used.
... cows make far, far more milk than their calves need. And clearly you've never worked with cattle. Our steer calves moo quite rarely, only when we are late feeding them. They have only ever mooed in response to hunger. And honestly, I don't like separating the young from their mothers but there are plenty of good reasons to do it and it can easily be done without either party grieving. You don't really sound like you know what you're talking about.
if like u say they make far to much milk why dont u and most dairy farms not let them stay with there mum and drink the milk that was meant for them in the first place as u say they make to mush but no profit profit profit and as for not grieving then u are the one not that dont know what u are talking about why does the mother cow cry for days for her baby explain that
Perhaps you're right. As long as they're not being beaten, bullied, or confined in small filthy crates, then that should be fine. Still won't eat veal though. I don't eat lamb, pigs, or ducks. I'd rather eat the kind of meat that is free-range or organic.
Ask a person who works on a production line in a factory how they feel? -- "tools of production" ... People may be treated well in this situation but that would be only to increase their performance as I am sure you are aware corporations have no heart beat.

ok, not like i am all for veal, but i appreciate your explanation and concern :-)
most of that is done with junk food and processed food, like fast food and the such that take shortcuts to good taste. eating no meat can do as much or more harm than not eating it.
They're gonna die anyways, so what does it matter?
I have worked with animals including veal calves for at least 20 years .... There are good operators and bad ones as you would expect . I think you would regard me as a good one ! I help make the video
ووووووووواو
how we can get it
Last night, I had 'sauteed veal chop with natural jus and vegetable tagliernis flavored with pesto'. YUM! This veal was so tasty that it took me to a new height of satisfaction.
Let's eat
I like fish better natural sea fish hmmmm instead hormonic cows which is so bad for health
:)
there are infact many humans or many among us that are them cows… so why sorry for cows?
I think I saw Pelosi in one of those pens
I agree with you, it's such a shame people try to minimize animals as just empty-headed meat bags instead of fully conscious living beings just to clear their conscience.
This is just as wrong as the entire meat industry.
Your comments are hardly the truth. You are entitled to your opinion, but the truth is disease does not spread like this. I have over 25 years first hand experience in this area.
Pon nabar din
Actually they are hungry. Once fed for the first time in the barn, calves make no noise at all. Young calves do not travel well when full of milk. This is why they are only given water and electrolytes during this period of transition.
@MoneyOverYours And that means you don´t need to take care of them properly? What a nonsense. BECAUSE they're someone's livelihood they should be taken care of a lot better.
Let us pretend everyone suddenly became vegetarian overnight. What will be the fate of the millions of cows when the beef and milk industries are gone? Would they be set free and allowed to roam as wild animals? Would they become pets? Would their numbers be intentionally and systematically reduced? I'm not trying to be a smart aleck. I'm trying to find answers from people who might have them. Thanks.
wow,#1 killing these innocent creatures only because you want a piece of bacon or want some money in exchange is BAD enough ,but doing so in front of their buddies is even more terrible. Those animals trust you because you feed them everyday. What a BETRAYAL to an innocent being.
Lady the real world is not a disney movie. I can assure you no animal has the slightest idea of what "betrayal" is. Animals are not conscience beings. They have no sense of rifht and wrong. They dont chuckle at each others jokes like in Bambi
Animals this age should be with their mothers. I hate it when farmers do this.
Clean or not, they should be allowed a normal life with their mothers. What about the mothers who are greiving the loss of their babies. Why cut their tails off?You think it's cool if someone were to cut your dog's tail off for wagging it?The dairy-veal industry needs to stop their massive abuse and exploitation of these innocent animals.People are going vegan because they love and care for animals, not just health and diet purposes.I quit meat and dairy and am working to DESTROY this sick industry
I'm glad I don't eat veal and never eaten it. In my opinion, veal is evil. Who's heartless idea was it to turn baby cows into a dinner menu? All for the love of money I suppose. Leave those poor gentle beings alone so they'll stay with their mothers for a lifetime. I don't see anyone doing this to puppies or kittens; so why calves?
Disneyfan82 veal at seven/eight months is not really a calf any more. Weighting about seven hundred pound and borned about thirty pounds. So if there is wrong. I guess it is letting the baby calf suck the Bottle till he is in mid tens or so. I still love fresh milk, that is unprocessed. Processed milk, my system rejects.
respect life. these are babies dammit!!
144hatsoff They're not babies when they are butchered. No one is eating a chick are they...no. They are butchered at 800 pounds. Good Lord. Ohh the uninformed.
Seriously guys grow up. Face the facts because this reality and we need to eat meat because its part of nature.

What is so sad in this video is I see a little calf trying to run, play and kick up it's heels in the crowded pen. A natural farm raised free pasture calf (even if it's meant for food) would at least been able to run and play until it's death. But not so with veal calves as running, playing, building up muscle, and getting too much sunlight will "toughen" the meat and not produce the "tender, anemic veal meat" you so desire... How many people that eat veal REALLY understand how it's produced?
The reason why these calves, mostly Holstein bull calves even exist is due to the fact that in order to get milk from a cow they need to give birth to a calf. Roughly 50% of the calves are "bulls" and there is no use for them as they will never be able to produce milk for human consumption. The Veal industry is developed to make use of this "waste product" from the milk industry. So if you drink milk, that's why there is veal!
They are not you and you are applying your human sensibilities and using inflammatory wording for effect. Be interesting to here waht you think about abortion..
Sorry --- you have listened to too much propaganda or produced it --- the tenderness of the meat has nothing to do with exercise -- it is the diet --Exercise and building muscle is healthy for vela calves - there are no restrictions on sunlight -- they just happen to be housed in doors due to extremes of climate.
There is no way to make veal any less cruel. The fact is, they spend their short life away from their mother, fresh air, or sunlight. It is beyond me how any farmer can bury his morals for a cheap buck.
Ohhh the clueless. So great to hear their stories.
These calves just want to be with their mother. They are mooing for their mother's milk and somewhere in a factory dairy farm are cows mooing for their babies. How on earth is this humane? I'll give kudos it is a clean environment (no idea how you hid the poop) and staff had a kind hand. However, calves should be feeding from their mothers and not machines.
Dairy cows don't give a damn about their calves, calves don't give a damn about their moms. Cows want full bellies and empty udders, calves want full bellies. That is it.
The fact that baby animals are taken away away from so young to be house in an industrial operation with thousans of other babies is never ever going to be humane, esp when they will meet a violent end. NO plastic nipple is going to replace th smell and warmth of a mother... these animals operate purely by instinct.
Well we wouldn't have done it like that if we had the facilities to do otherwise. We just have animals for our own use, no market purposes. And there are far, far worse ways to go. And yeah, I fed them every day. And in return I get bacon from them. Death is not the worst fate in the world.
Calves sound annoying
Look, I love animals too. But, we'll see how Vegan you'll stay when the nice fresh produce you buy in the Grocery store isn't available because of a disaster. You obviously aren't growing enough to feed yourself...so in the end, you might just eat your dog out of hunger. Hard facts lady. Also - animals eat animals...lion eats gazelle, etc...and your statement of the "Meat and dairy industries will be out of business within the next decade" is BS. Only 8% of the world is vegan.People need to eat.
NO YOU DONT LOVE ANIMALS u cannot have your cake and eat it its like saying i believe in god but i eat his murdered beings
no only uneducated or educated person is not that much get disciplined only yes for meats... now a days people are changing.. the uncurable didease are easily catching by eating meat. only. most people came to realize that the strength is in the greens vegetables and nuts not in the fat produce meat...todays 8 tomorrows it will be 80%.i agree.
okay I have nothing against eating meat. But just because we want to make meat into veal and then let cows not be out in the wild sunlight with their mothers Exedra that is just plain cruel. I do not eat veal. I think that if we're going to kill an animal to eat it should have a normal life at first all we need is beef. We don't need veal.
Wow,did you complete high school?
Wild sunlight? Is it the same as calm sunlight ?
Thetruthsetsyoufree . . .thats dairy . If you don’t separate the baby from momma then there is no product wether it be dairy or veal and in some cases beef. No product means no profit $ $ $. Much or less the case. There is no milk without breeding the cows to begin with. It happens through artificial insemination or naturally.
Thetruthsetsyoufree . . . One of the most common practices in dairy industry is separating calf’s from their mother. This is done primarily for Economic reason. that way there is a product to sell. The calf’s are byproducts of dairy. However, male calf’s are either discarded, killed for veal or other purpose, or raised for beef, or allowed to grow into bulls used to breed more cattle. Females are normally are raised as dairy cows. Also when cows can’t produce calf’s or enough milk then they are sent off to slaughter.
Cows feel no pain because they're stupid and they're lots of them. Whales feel pain because they're smart and they're endangered, when you're endangered; you automatically feel pain.
Is this a serious comment or what?!!
Are you really this stupid?
No, but apparently the Sea Shepherds and everyone making a big deal about the Japanese are. I'm just trying to sound like them, so people are aware how racist, stupid and hypocritical they are.
+Pro Whaler Incorrect. Cows are extremely intelligent animals. Wise Up.

You know this video was made 12 years ago right?
13 actually
Disgraceful way to raise a calve .
No outside natural way of life .
it may be good for preventing diseases, but they can barley move in the stalls. they are, waht, 2 by 6 feet? Thats horrible. And at such a young age...? Cows actually have feelings, too.
Im not some crazy vegan: I do eat meat. But my dad grew up on a farm and you must respect the animal before you eat it.
Never will i order veal.
People are going vegan by the thousands every year because we don't want our fellow creatures to suffer and be deprived of their normal lives..just as you wouldn't the government sticking you in a FEMA camp, depriving you from family your own family till you die.People are waking up and so should you.You should seriously look into promoting families having their OWN dairy cows and get into the business of helping people set up their own barns.People are interested and would pay for that service.
To the person and people who are with this disgusting act, what the hell is wrong with you? I know you guys grew up in an enviourment where this is ok, but im sure you all are old enough to think for yourself. How do you guys think that taking new born calves from their mothers are ok? Wait, dont tell me, its all about the money, right? You guys need to put yourself into those cows shoes (or hooves) regardless it being an animal or human. You people need to grow up.
It's better than most factory farms, but still wrong. I noticed you don't show what happens when they're slaughtered, or how the cows continue to cry, when you take their baby away. It's simple...we don't have the right to harm others. If these were your babies, would you want someone to take it away from you as soon as you gave birth? No, then why do it to another being; one that it has been PROVEN, can feel. At slaughter, these animals will die a HORRIBLE death; one that is unimagineable!
Well hopefully when they change animal abuse laws they don't come after you for what you've done in the past
It's legal to kill a baby born at nine months old in New York. Other states as well. Animals in the West are treated far better than children
@@dnznznfjsnsnsms9996 it's legal to kill grown people to......especially if it's just a virus.
Illegal
How is it illegal
How horrible that they all cry and moan for their mothers... It reminds me so of what the slave ships must have been like... cruel, digustingly inhumane.
Choose compassion - Go vegan
