Milk Fed Veal raising

  • Delft Blue Farms in Canada have been raising calves in group housing settings since 1981.
This video shows the process of calves being assembled from local farms in a receiving barn where the animals are weighed, checked, vaccinated. They are then divided into groups of similar weights to be distributed to company or contracted farms to be raised as milk fed veal.
In this particular video, the calves are being shown delivered to a company farm, where they are housed on flexible plastic slats made from recycled plastic.
The calves have 24 hour access to an "automated cow" where they drink milk through nipples. Most calves would find these nipples themselves eventually, but a technician makes sure that all the calves are made aware of the source of the milk.
The calves intake is controlled and monitored by a special ear tag that monitors the calf's intake each time they feed for the automatic milk machine.

Looks like a nice, neat tidy, operation. Calves are happy and healthy, facilities are clean and well managed. Anyone who had a clue about what they were talking about would never say a negigive comment about this operation. Especally with their mouth full.

Sounds pretty high tech with feeding and such. How do you know when it's time to actually slaughter for meat? Is there a certain age when veal meat is considered ready or does it vary. Do you also have a high tech way for evalutaing when they're ready. Interesting stuff. I also like the fact that you've created an interesting conversation in the comments.

and at my school, (military school) exercise is a big part of everything. it can usually keep you out of trouble too, instead of getting detention or a write-up you do pushups lol.
the best way to lose weight though is to find a lot of healthy snacks frequently. eat little and often. it speeds up your metabolism, and when coupled with exercise can make you lose weight fast without being unhealthy or skipping meals which does the opposite.

Calves in group housing in USA are being shipped at 18-19 weeks at around 450 lb. Also the amount of feed intake per calf is monitored by an electronic reader attached to one ear which registers and controls the maximum amounts each calf can drink. This is all recorded and monitored live by computer

I do eat meat, beef, pork, chicken. I do not eat veal, lamb, etc. My dad hunted. I grew up on a farm. I believe ALL animals should be well cared for, even if they are raised for food purposes, until the time they are taken/killed for food. I also feel anyone that eats veal, lamb, etc should have to AT least work a week in the barn caring for the baby animals. Their crys will haunt your dreams, believe me. AND most everyone that "loves" veal / lamb will come away with a different outlook.

Well let me begin by saying I HAVE WORKED on a farm, and have been brought up around animals. As for as farm facilities go this one is very clean /animals well kept, HOWever, I do not eat baby animals. I'm not against hunting, or eating meat, but I do draw the line at eating "baby" animals, as I do not feel this is right. I believe anyone that eats veal, or lamb, should have to AT least work in a veal barn for a week. It would change their outlook, and I'd bet many would give up veal / lamb.

i know very well that eating meat can have adverse affects on the body if consumed in excessive amounts, especially at an old age and i plan to stop eating meat if i reach a very old age, but for someone who is growing a lot eating meat is essential, it has a lot of energy inside of it that's not fake energy like caffeine, eating celery is a negative calorie. it takes more energy to digest celery than you get from it. but in the near future, i'm going to keep eating my balanced portions

I do think killing an animal so young is terrible (although this is what routinely happens to chickens) but these calves are happy and comfortable. They clearly aren't abused, as shown by their interest in the cameraman and it's true that an uncomfortable cow will moo. Ours would moo when it got close to feeding time and when they were weaned. These calves aren't mooing.

Yea people react with their emotions rather than their brain. Some of these comments speak to the ignorance of the masses. These animals are in good condition for being bred as food.

Calves in make a noise when they are hungry. On automatic machines they are never hungry so once they are fed the frist time they never make another noise -- When they arrive at the farm they have only had water or electrolytes when traveling -- Young calves don't travel well with full stomachs.

@Emmerara there are many types of veal from bob veal, which is only a few days old, to rose veal, which is around 35 weeks old. Most lamb is around 3 to 5 months (13 to 21 weeks ish). so eating lamb but not veal, depending on the veal, is kinda hypocritical.

We killed two pigs right in front of their litter mates. The remaining pigs didn't notice or care. And I believe that animals are typically stunned before anything happens, so I'm not entirely sure how they are supposed to be aware.

Well, if you dont want a calf to be taken a way from its mother, you consumers have to stop demanding cheap milk, if farmers recived just 10ppl more, they wouldent need to produce as much milk to try and make a living off it and therefore they could keep the calves with the cows for a few months. Here in the uk, the milk price is the same as production price, over 2/3 of brittish dairy farmers have gone out of business due to low milk prices. I hope you can sort of see what i mean.

... cows make far, far more milk than their calves need. And clearly you've never worked with cattle. Our steer calves moo quite rarely, only when we are late feeding them. They have only ever mooed in response to hunger. And honestly, I don't like separating the young from their mothers but there are plenty of good reasons to do it and it can easily be done without either party grieving. You don't really sound like you know what you're talking about.

What is so sad in this video is I see a little calf trying to run, play and kick up it's heels in the crowded pen. A natural farm raised free pasture calf (even if it's meant for food) would at least been able to run and play until it's death. But not so with veal calves as running, playing, building up muscle, and getting too much sunlight will "toughen" the meat and not produce the "tender, anemic veal meat" you so desire... How many people that eat veal REALLY understand how it's produced?

  • @hardlyhimself
    @hardlyhimself  17 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The reason why these calves, mostly Holstein bull calves even exist is due to the fact that in order to get milk from a cow they need to give birth to a calf. Roughly 50% of the calves are "bulls" and there is no use for them as they will never be able to produce milk for human consumption. The Veal industry is developed to make use of this "waste product" from the milk industry. So if you drink milk, that's why there is veal!

Sorry --- you have listened to too much propaganda or produced it --- the tenderness of the meat has nothing to do with exercise -- it is the diet --Exercise and building muscle is healthy for vela calves - there are no restrictions on sunlight -- they just happen to be housed in doors due to extremes of climate.

Look, I love animals too. But, we'll see how Vegan you'll stay when the nice fresh produce you buy in the Grocery store isn't available because of a disaster. You obviously aren't growing enough to feed yourself...so in the end, you might just eat your dog out of hunger. Hard facts lady. Also - animals eat animals...lion eats gazelle, etc...and your statement of the "Meat and dairy industries will be out of business within the next decade" is BS. Only 8% of the world is vegan.People need to eat.

okay I have nothing against eating meat. But just because we want to make meat into veal and then let cows not be out in the wild sunlight with their mothers Exedra that is just plain cruel. I do not eat veal. I think that if we're going to kill an animal to eat it should have a normal life at first all we need is beef. We don't need veal.

Thetruthsetsyoufree . . .thats dairy . If you don’t separate the baby from momma then there is no product wether it be dairy or veal and in some cases beef. No product means no profit $ $ $. Much or less the case. There is no milk without breeding the cows to begin with. It happens through artificial insemination or naturally.

Thetruthsetsyoufree . . . One of the most common practices in dairy industry is separating calf’s from their mother. This is done primarily for Economic reason. that way there is a product to sell. The calf’s are byproducts of dairy. However, male calf’s are either discarded, killed for veal or other purpose, or raised for beef, or allowed to grow into bulls used to breed more cattle. Females are normally are raised as dairy cows. Also when cows can’t produce calf’s or enough milk then they are sent off to slaughter.

Cows feel no pain because they're stupid and they're lots of them. Whales feel pain because they're smart and they're endangered, when you're endangered; you automatically feel pain.

it may be good for preventing diseases, but they can barley move in the stalls. they are, waht, 2 by 6 feet? Thats horrible. And at such a young age...? Cows actually have feelings, too.
Im not some crazy vegan: I do eat meat. But my dad grew up on a farm and you must respect the animal before you eat it.
    Never will i order veal.

People are going vegan by the thousands every year because we don't want our fellow creatures to suffer and be deprived of their normal lives..just as you wouldn't the government sticking you in a FEMA camp, depriving you from family your own family till you die.People are waking up and so should you.You should seriously look into promoting families having their OWN dairy cows and get into the business of helping people set up their own barns.People are interested and would pay for that service.

To the person and people who are with this disgusting act, what the hell is wrong with you? I know you guys grew up in an enviourment where this is ok, but im sure you all are old enough to think for yourself. How do you guys think that taking new born calves from their mothers are ok? Wait, dont tell me, its all about the money, right? You guys need to put yourself into those cows shoes (or hooves) regardless it being an animal or human. You people need to grow up.

It's better than most factory farms, but still wrong. I noticed you don't show what happens when they're slaughtered, or how the cows continue to cry, when you take their baby away. It's simple...we don't have the right to harm others. If these were your babies, would you want someone to take it away from you as soon as you gave birth? No, then why do it to another being; one that it has been PROVEN, can feel. At slaughter, these animals will die a HORRIBLE death; one that is unimagineable!
