  • I have just finished my degree in Film and Television at Aberystwyth University. I struggled to make a choice whether to study Film after college due to there being so many negative stereotypes of studying an Arts subject. After studying Film and TV for 3 years, I thought it'd be good to summaries my experience to help others. I understand it's a big and difficult decision to make.
    I hope you found this helpful. If you have any questions, leave a comment or message me on Instagram :)

    I just stumbled across your video whilst looking for help with deciding what degree I should do. I’m torn between television production, or journalism with content creation. I never did creative subjects at a level because I was pressured by family to do academic subjects, even though I was never academic. I’ve always had a massive interest in television, always looking deeper than just watching an episode that was on the tv, for me it was looking at how scenes were shot and how it fits with the mood of the scene, if the producer was trying to give out a message, etc. i am edging more towards television production but there’s just a worry about not having anywhere to take the degree after it’s completed.

      Don't worry about not having studied any of the subjects at college! First year of Uni is always treated to get everyone on the same page.
      I was completely the same when I was looking at Universities. I was initially looking to study English language - to please others, my family and my status.
      I will always be so thankful about taking Film and TV at Uni, I'm so glad I decided to listen to myself and do what I truly perferred. I always say to everyone study what you enjoy, because if you don't and you study something you're not 100% happy with - 1. You won't thrive as much as you would with a subject you love. 2. You won't get any where near the same experience at University.
      You change so much throughout Uni and that's why I always say don't worry about the future and jobs etc. I know of course it's super hard because you want to make sure it's worth it - and I'm a planner and did the same thing. But looking back there was no need to stress. Every career you think of in film and TV now... Your thoughts and feelings will completely change and you'll discover things you never thought about. There's many many many opportunities you'll discover! ☺️

    😭I'm hesitating to choose a major in film and media. To be honest, I don't have a foundation in film, and I don't seem to be a very creative person. But I want to try the cross discipline of film and media. Should I choose? I'm worried about whether the film will be too difficult(Especially Lancaster's film media and culture/media and culture. I think I lack the courage to choose movies)

    So I'm in year 11 now and currently doing college applications and I don't know what to do, I've always wanted to be in the film industry but I wasn't confident enough for acting and would prefer to be behind the scenes, anyway I didn't get the option to do media in school so I'm currently doing health and social care and kind of convinced myself that's what I wanted to do, however now that Ive had time to think about it I'm not enjoying it, I finally told my parents that I wanted to work on film and they're fine with it (I think) however I've had no experience and don't want to go Into a media course at college and regret it and I just don't know what to do, like everyones telling me there isn't as much job opportunities and I won't get far with media whereas h&sc opens up loads of opportunities

    • @jennyedwards
      @jennyedwards  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't worry! I only took film studies and a few other A-levels and didn't have much experience at all, just knew I loved film. You don't necessarily have to have loads of experience at all in order to study film at Uni. I had the same experience about people saying you won't get a job or do this instead. But I'm so happy I studied film at Uni because I enjoyed it and got way more out of it. I feel if I studied English language I would've hated it.
      Listen to what you want to do and study something you enjoy - no point regretting it - finding a job (which there are plenty of avenues) will come around.

I''ve just applied for film studies at the same university, when I was younger I wished I could work in the film industry - but I never talked about it. Will the degree in film be 100% worth it?

    • @jennyedwards
      @jennyedwards  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's awesome that you've re- applied and followed something you really want to do. It takes alot to make that decision! I would say a film degree is 100% worth it as long as you put the effort in. The more work you do and the more opportunities you apply for means you'll get alot more out of your degree. A film department gives you a great support network which you wouldn't necessarily get if you tried to get into the industry yourself. I was thinking of making another version of this video, so if you have any more questions feel free to let me know. 😊

      Hi, I'm choosing between business and media but worried about the job opportunities for future, after changing do you have something to confirm that you have completed that year and how much has it affected uni debt, what made you choose business in the first place and what in particular did you like and dislike -sorry for all the questions, super undecided at the moment x

    • @lizzyspafford2309
      @lizzyspafford2309 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm unsure on that one - I think it depends on the uni you're studying with. It hasn't affected me that much financially as I took out a student tuition loan for it anyway. If you were to do media at uni, it can get you into the majority of business related jobs too (such as marketing based roles). I liked the university, just didn't like the course, as it all felt very unorganized. And I felt as though we weren't getting enough hours with staff from the industry, so essentially I felt as though they were just treating us as "bums in seats" Hope this helps! 😊

    • @jennyedwards
      @jennyedwards  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey!! It all depends on the uni and their course, because they vary a lot.
      In my Film and Tv course we did have a Live TV module where you could be the presenter for other groups, however I don’t remember it being a marked role. You could also act in films but you’d have to do it for other groups, not your own, as it wasn’t marked.
      If you wanted more of a qualification in acting I would suggest looking into a joint honours. A lot of people studied film and tv or drama as their main subject and then took a module in the other subject.
      Hope this helps ☺️

      I did film studies at A-level. It's a great way to get introduced to the industry etc but is quite broad. You don't need it to be able to go to uni to study it, but it's a good all rounder. It's definitely personal preference 🙂

    • @jennyedwards
      @jennyedwards  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In two years time everything could change. It’s such a good amount of time to learn and develop skills and maybe film short 1min videos on your phone for example... literally anything. Watch some film theory videos on TH-cam, it’s a good place to start. Don’t worry about not having direct experience at this time! In the first year of a degree they’re aware that everyone will have different backgrounds, so first year is more of an all rounded year to get people on the same page. Media is a great qualification to go with film and tv! When it comes to making the choice of whether to go to University or not or even what course to study, a lot of it is down to research as tedious as it is. It really helps to make the right decision for yourself. But things will always work themselves out don’t worry :)

If you really truly want something you'll find a way to make it work. And regards to studying, if you study something you love you'll enjoy the experience, get better results and get more out of it. And whilst you're studying at Uni there's a massive support system for jobs and you'll discover many more opportunities out there, that you didn't know existed. I had the exact same worries but I have no regrets from studying it, it was so valuable for me 😊

      That's awesome you're applying to Aber! It depends on the specific course to whether you have the work experience module. But regardless, the best thing I can advise is building connections with the lecturers because they have many different backgrounds and many different contacts which will help. Regarding work experience it's always a case of the more effort you put into finding a placement the more options you'll find. But being at a Uni there's always a support network. To be honest we had a good amount of 'spare time' but at Uni there is alot of self study you're expected to do. So for film there will be practical things you have to do in those spare "blocks" - where you're not scheduled a lecture, seminar or work shop. For example, you might have a task from a workshop to make a short film every week and you're responsible for how you scheduled the 'freetime' to carry out that task. If that makes any sense? But seminars and lectures normally are 1hr and work shops can vary from 2-4hrs or more. I have recently filmed another video about studying film if that's any help to you ☺️

      Of course it won’t be a bad thing to do film production at Uni. If you main goal is to be a camera op, then that is a key part to film production. Even if you have your heart set on one job role it’s still really beneficial to understand other roles in the industry to make you a better camera op. Even if you’re not good at something it’s still worth trying. And don’t worry about doing your own films. You’ll be working with a group and get to select your role in the production. You all help each other! Hope this helps, good luck ☺️

    Hello! I am planning on studying BA English literature and film studies in the UK (Most likely Bangor Uni, IF I get an offer) I have viewed Aberystwyth uni (it is on my list as well) and it was Film/ Television production with English literature. So you do get an option to organize and categorize your credits between theoretical and practical modules. Do we get to select in all uni what semester and credits we dedicate to theoretical and physical courses or only a selected few? There are not many videos on social platforms on film studies (And none for English and film), SO that you for the video! It was really helpful!

    • @jennyedwards
      @jennyedwards  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooo niceee! Bangor's Aber's rivals haha. From people I know that did joint honours at Aber, you have to balance them fairly evenly between each subject for first year. The same as if you just did a single honours in film and TV, it's like an intro year. But for second and third year you get more flexibility with how you want to weigh your degree. I do believe with joint degrees, there's more limiting combinations with modules for each subject. I assume because it has to work for your time table - I could be wrong though and it might have changed. You still get the option to weight your degree with how you want. But when you choose your modules you do it just before you start each year - so when you're going through that process make sure to speak to your personal tutor to see what combinations would be good. Hope this helps, best of luck 🥰

      Is that refering to a Masters?
      I personally didn't take a master's in film and TV because I wanted to take a different route. For the arts a master's isn't always 100% needed in the same way a doctor would need it. It's sometimes more benefiting to go out and get the experience first hand. But it's all down to personal preference as it's not 100% needed for the industry.

      First year at University for film was treated as a way to get everyone on the same page. Sure the more you know the better but it's really not necessary. ☺️

      @@jennyedwards alright yeah that makes sense, thank you so much! If you don’t mind, how did you find the course? which parts did you find the most difficult and which areas did you find the most enjoyable?? ☺️

    You don’t need £50,000 to study film and tv. Instead of getting into debt you could literally volunteer at the BBC or make videos at home or even get a paid job with a film/tv/media company = no debt, networking, experience. Surely it’s an actual no brainer!? (“You don’t have to buy a camera etc, it’s supplied for you. Yes you pay for tuition but that’s separate”) no it’s not!!! Unis are just businesses. Use them for your own gain. If you get into 10’s of thousands of pounds of debt to study film etc when you could have avoided it and got the same if not better opportunities - you’ve been bent over by the establishment. Sorry, stop going to Uni for things that can be learned on the job for free.

      In college (age 16-18) I took A-level Film Studies. But honestly I knew students that hadn't studied anything prior to University. I've filmed another Video about studying Film, feel free to check it out ☺️

      You don't need equipment in order to study film at University. The University should hold a supply of professional equipment for students to use. Having said that if you do have your own camera then it just means you'll find even easier to practice and develop you're skill set in your own time.
