  • Welcome back! Its medieval day!
Today we will take a look at the Reconquista, the 800-year conflict for the command of the Iberian Peninsula through its coinage.
We will look at a bunch of examples of coinage of the time, how they connected to the political and economical context of the period, and see how we can collect the coins of this fascinating period of history.

Watching this I realised I had two coins from Alfonso VII in my collections since 30 years and unattributed. One is Toledo but the second one is clearly from another mint. Time to revisit those two :)

I don't even live in Spain, yet coins of its previous monarch Juan Carlos I are so plentiful here, its like a "monetary conquest".

I have a denaro issued by king James I of Aragon, minted in Valencia, which is my first medieval item. It was really fascinated to clean it from unearthed condition and identify it.

I ejoyed this video particularly even more than others you did. As for the dirham shown at 8:30, it is indeed from al-Muhammadiyah, and the date is 173H. The name above the reverse area, "Yahya", refers to the vizier Yahya b. Khalid al-Barmaki, a member of a true dynasty of grand viziers of the Abbasid Caliphate. His son, Jaf'ar, whose name in the dirhams is way more common than his father's, is also (as Caliph Harun al-Rashid's) featured in several tales of the Arabian Nights.

One little correction, the last line of the rev. of the square dirham which you translate as "the prophet is upon us", and reads "al-Mahdi imamuna", means "the Mahdi is our imam", and refers to Ibn Tumart, leader of the Almohad sect. Imam is the priest who directs the prayers in Islam. So the legend shoud be more closely translated as "Allah is our God / Muhammad is our prophet / the Mahdi is our imam (our guide)." It is a sectarian legend, and it is a kind of tryptych verse.
