How do you think your wigs? Do you use shears or some other tools or technique?

This is the first time someone has clearly explained and shown me not only that I CAN thin my own wig but HOW to approach it! Thank you so much! I too have a small face and head and I can't count the number of wigs I've thrown/given away because I looked like a balloon head....and an obvious wig wearer! Every wig I put on my head just cries out..."she 's wearing a wig!". This approach should solve my problem YEAH! Too bad wig makers don't make wigs for women who want a less hair, more natural look. Now I have a new use for my thinning shears. Thank you.

I'm so glad you liked the video! I end up either thinning or trimming the front of most of my wigs because there's too much hair. Some manufacturers make lower density wigs (like Ellen Wille), so a wig retailer might know which brands to try.

A balloon head....that's funny! I look at my head and think I have a football helmet on!! Funny thing is pictures of me in this wig look good, but when I touch my head, it it WAY too thick! I'm buying a thinning shears for sure!

Wow! You made Dance look like she’s growing out of your head! You’ve inspired me to try thinning again, after screwing up one wig.
I have a tip for those who don’t like the dark rooting that’s so prevalent, but want a lighter, custom rooting: buy a range of permanent markers in the root color you want (I use Copic markers in shades of light taupe) from the art supply store. I buy a range of colors to create a natural, dimensional look and also add lowlights with the markers. It’s not that hard. I do 10 minutes at a time for 3-4 sessions, and that’s for complete rooting and lowlights. Of course I buy unrooted pieces (Marshmallow Blonde by Belle Tress, but many options are out there) to create this look. The pieces look amazing and match my coloring so well! Great for toppers, too!

I’m new to wigs. Have had two in my closet for a couple of years. Felt like they just look too fake. My problem is that I’m 78 but still have dark brown bio hair. With a dark wig I’m afraid that it will look fake no matter what I do. With your instructions I’m going to thin them out. Thanks so much for your tutorial! It’s very good. I have watched several and yours was the most helpful!

A tip for thinning shears USERS, (from a dog groomer). If you are LEFT HANDED make sure you buy LEFT HANDED SHEARS. You’ll get better results, because they will work the way they are supposed to.

I do not pull the shears through, I use my comb to pull it through because otherwise it can damage a longer wig, making it frizzy. Thanks for sharing!

I had watched a similar video trimming and cutting your own BIO hair and I've gotten really good with it. I've then watched a few more designer videos to see what techniques they use and cutting hair is really quite easy and now cut my own hair in "A" style bob. I've also learned how to trim my springer spaniels. So transitioning those skills over to my wigs that are ALWAYS to dense, bangs too heavy/long, fringe too heavy, etc is where I'm now in my journey. Your techniques are a little different from other wig thinning/trimming vids I've watched - all are great. But I find yours a little more applicable vecause I have a smaller head and like you prefer a much lighter hair on my wigs. As you said getting the hang of it and developing a methods that works for your head and wig situation is something we all can do at home. Thanks for the great tips. For working over the side fringe at my ears and even sweeping bangs, I use a razor comb plus thinning shears.

You're doing a lil trim on a short wig. How would I ever begin?! Start with the length? You seem more experienced at this! Would hate to mess it up! Got the thinning shears-- just- go to it- a lil at a time!? Help!

@@christinemcgraw8710 you have managed to hit my top three questions...dyeing synthetic wigs, thinning them and your tip for adding height to a wig with quilt batting blew me away! I have a round face and have several brand new wigs sitting in boxes because they sit flat on my head and so not flattering. I am now the proud owner of several bottles of acrylic ink and a nice package of batting. I’ve had the thinning shears for a while, using them to thin bangs on most of my hair-dos. And by the way, I appreciated your comment about the Dolce wig by Noriko working for us round-faced gals. It’s my all time favorite and I was so happy to hear you say it works for us. I’ve always thought so, but your confirmation meant everything. Keep up the great work, Christine!

Thinning a wig with thinning shears can be tricky because it leaves shorter hairs that causes root tangling. She does go to the root but it’s still a chance you take so the best way imo to Thin your wigs is by either removing wefts by cutting them out or removing the thread or make sure you cut out the hair to the root/base of wig very closely

I have a little head too. You did an awesome job! My thin, scraggly hair is growing out after my self-induced pandemic buzz cut and looks awful. I’ll see my hairdresser in Texas in a couple months so until then, it’s wig time! Which also keeps my head warm. I just thinned my first wig, a very expensive one that made me look like Edith Bunker (and I thought it looked so gorgeous when I bought it this summer!). It’s wearable now, but I’ll be thinning it more. I couldn’t do it on my head so I put it over my electric kettle for stability. Thanks for the video!

Nobody's hair grows like this; I don't know why they make them so thick. I would like to suggest that these machined wigs use long hairs from the part, instead of 1/2 inch fuzz. Wish me luck.

Hi Christine! Hey! That's my middle name! I'm in good company! Love your tutorials, it sounds like we have the same head shape so what you do to fix a problem really resonates with me. You recommend got2b Ultra Glued invisible styling gel. I have a whole tube of got2b glued spiking glue. Should I just toss it and make sure I have the same as you? Thanks for your help. You are such a welcome voice to us newbies in the topsy turvy world of wigs! God Bless.

Hi Christine, Great video. I just purchased Soft and subtle which I love, but don't think it is going to work. It definitely needs major thinning. I really don't think I am up for the challenge. I only have a few wigs and have NO experience doing this, but they could definitely use less bulk and helmet head look..My flawless waves too. I am only around 20 in circumference. Can you recommend any really cute bobs that will come to just under the chin..and some wavy styles, just above shoulder would be my preference unless there is something low density and really cute that cute that can be trimmed easily. . Thanks so much. PS you look really pretty in Dance and it looks so natural on you!

I usually thin with the same type of shears. But I haven't be brave enough to do the top or front. I'm afraid of leftover spikes at the root. Have you tried a razor comb?

There are differences styles of wig grips available. I like the adjustable velvet one with a lace section for the part. They’re available in most online wig shops and amazon.

You mentioned you have your wig glued on; I have hair but it's so thin. What would you recommend to keep a wig on my thin hair???
