Yeah, if Google or Amazon acquires it, I can see Amazon or Google positioning Jibo as a high-end home assistant, and if properly integrated with the Amazon/Google ecosystem, it might actually work really well.
If it managed to have all 3 of the major smart home hubs supported then it would almost be a must buy since it could incorporate the good from literally all of the big shots.
His voice makes him feel like more of an assistant than a companion,. His movement is amazingly natural, His curious gazing gives him the feel of this adorable little creature, but once you hear this monotone voice, it really breaks the whole "Companion" thing

Maybe Google if they can get them to use their own Android software. But doubtful with Amazon. Amazon won't allow it for the same reason Apple won't, they use their digital assistants to sell hardware.
It'd be amazing if Google plugged their assistant into it. However, security is too much of a concern. The average tinfoil hatted person doesn't want a computer watching them.
I mean this is almost unfair. Apple and amazon and google have spent probably over $1 billion (?more even) on the technology. No small company really has a chance. Sure you can use the API and this probably does- either an out of the box amazon AWS, and google cloud api, or Microsoft apis (Apple doesn’t have one to my knowledge) they almost definitely don’t give you the best the best tech- and even the api’s take tons of configuration and pre-programming.
But you also cannot expect customers to pay a lot of money just to support small companies. If only U.S. anti-trust laws were actually properly enforced so that those huge companies could be dismembered...
Paladin Boyd Alexa tends to give subjective information when asked questions that should have pretty straightforward objective answers. My cousin got one a while back and being that he’s a religious guy, so I like to fuck with him from time to time. I started asking Alexa a bunch of random things like “was Muhammad a sexy bitch” and the like. But the more things I asked the more it seemed Alexa shared my cousin’s faith. Then I started asking about Christian stuff like “who was Jesus” and she said he was a fictional character of the Bible. Now I’m the atheist of the family but even I concede that Jesus was in fact a real guy that the bulk of scholars agree existed. I will say that I invested more of time into the thing than I care to admit but a glaring issue is when it comes to nearly anything on the “American List of PCs that shall not be discussed”, it was glaringly obvious she cites more skewed opinions rather than facts. TLDR: Fun for hours, not a good source for a thesis paper.
Even that tiny toy forklift-looking thing with the cool animated pixel-face that would play with the user in reaction/flench games is a better entertainer than this. By a landslide.

Honestly, for a crowd-funded project, this is pretty good. I mean, do you honestly expect something like this to be competitive with the offerings of two of the richest tech companies in the world?!
I think someone probably should buy them out. The way it moves and responds does seem very life like. I could see this as a sort of interfaced housing thing for already existing devices that are far superior to it. If I could open a bottom plate and dock Alexa inside of it. And if doing that would make an Alexa that behaves like JIBO. And if I could do that for less than $200. Might be worth the novelty.
The design team really did nail his movement; even in 2018, I'm extremely impressed. The first thing I said when I saw it move in this video was, "someone should buy these guys out". Unfortunately, on the software end, it seems like this is one of the devices that was slightly ahead of its time. The $900 pricepoint is absurd though. I'm assuming it's probably like the late Juicero, which was another startup and was extremely over-engineered, but had a ridiculously good build quality. But that drives up the price so much that you will never appeal to the mass-market. I'd be curious to see one taken apart and inspected by someone like AvE.
Yeah in a lot of ways it can be terrible to be among the first with an invention. Especially if you're last to market. Because then it's no longer about how cool it is. It's about what you get vs. buying from the other guy. So much R&D down the drain. Their only real hope of turning a profit at this point is if something about it is worth buying out.
yeah I'd be very tempted to try to find an exploit to wire Google Assistant through it. That would be a huge competitor in the new age household assistant market.

Maybe Google if they can get them to use their own Android software. But doubtful with Amazon. Amazon won't allow it for the same reason Apple won't, they use their digital assistants to sell hardware.

I mean this is almost unfair. Apple and amazon and google have spent probably over $1 billion (?more even) on the technology. No small company really has a chance. Sure you can use the API and this probably does- either an out of the box amazon AWS, and google cloud api, or Microsoft apis (Apple doesn’t have one to my knowledge) they almost definitely don’t give you the best the best tech- and even the api’s take tons of configuration and pre-programming.
But you also cannot expect customers to pay a lot of money just to support small companies. If only U.S. anti-trust laws were actually properly enforced so that those huge companies could be dismembered...

Alexa tends to give subjective information when asked questions that should have pretty straightforward objective answers. My cousin got one a while back and being that he’s a religious guy, so I like to fuck with him from time to time. I started asking Alexa a bunch of random things like “was Muhammad a sexy bitch” and the like. But the more things I asked the more it seemed Alexa shared my cousin’s faith. Then I started asking about Christian stuff like “who was Jesus” and she said he was a fictional character of the Bible. Now I’m the atheist of the family but even I concede that Jesus was in fact a real guy that the bulk of scholars agree existed. I will say that I invested more of time into the thing than I care to admit but a glaring issue is when it comes to nearly anything on the “American List of PCs that shall not be discussed”, it was glaringly obvious she cites more skewed opinions rather than facts.
TLDR: Fun for hours, not a good source for a thesis paper.

I think someone probably should buy them out. The way it moves and responds does seem very life like. I could see this as a sort of interfaced housing thing for already existing devices that are far superior to it. If I could open a bottom plate and dock Alexa inside of it. And if doing that would make an Alexa that behaves like JIBO. And if I could do that for less than $200. Might be worth the novelty.
The design team really did nail his movement; even in 2018, I'm extremely impressed. The first thing I said when I saw it move in this video was, "someone should buy these guys out". Unfortunately, on the software end, it seems like this is one of the devices that was slightly ahead of its time. The $900 pricepoint is absurd though. I'm assuming it's probably like the late Juicero, which was another startup and was extremely over-engineered, but had a ridiculously good build quality. But that drives up the price so much that you will never appeal to the mass-market. I'd be curious to see one taken apart and inspected by someone like AvE.
Yeah in a lot of ways it can be terrible to be among the first with an invention. Especially if you're last to market. Because then it's no longer about how cool it is. It's about what you get vs. buying from the other guy. So much R&D down the drain. Their only real hope of turning a profit at this point is if something about it is worth buying out.
yeah I'd be very tempted to try to find an exploit to wire Google Assistant through it. That would be a huge competitor in the new age household assistant market.

Well they could use the Samsung version, that phone OLED thingy (forgot the name? Super amoled?) I got it on my phone 5-6 (7?) years ago, and it wasnt too expensive either. It has nearly 100 % blacks, its amazing. ;p
