Lowkey dumping on FM, going 28mph on a Floatwheel and sipping coffee, all at the same time. Classic
I just checked the footage... turns out I accidentally went 29
Calm down. The cup is empty.
I’ve hit 28.6mph on my GT without issue. Haven’t had a speed related nosedive or crash yet.
But you have no idea how hard you can push it tho
Shout out to Dado for making Float control. For anyone curious, VESC boards also have configurable haptic buzz in beta testing which when combined with the monitoring apps, is absolutely the best safety solution in the game right now 🎉
Thanks for developing Floaty on Android. 🤙
ive been using haptic buzz on the vesc for a couple weeks and can say its better than tiltback honestly, i can react to it way quicker than waiting to feel tiltback occur.
@@auden_builds this is exactly what I found too.
What I really like is when you ride with a ear bud in, there’s a sweet lady robot voice that tells you every time you hit 80% duty cycle :) it’s very nice to have that reminder when peaking during flow stare on some trail!
When I hopped on my Floatwheel and discovered this earlier this year, I also was shocked that I could basically so the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs with no worries of nose dives. That thing is the beast.
Super video.
Love it! I don’t think he was crapping on FM at all, just pointing out a way they could improve their safety while still providing an enjoyable ride 😎
100%
egg-zackly
the overall vibe of "the industry is past you guys, get with it future motion" is just fantastic. class and steeze, never throws a punch, jeff is the man.
I dream of a day that TFL releases their own single wheeled VESC based device.
Build your own 😆 buy all there parts, an vesc and a bat.
Done with future motion.... can't wait for my Floatwheel 🤙🏽
Be ready for heaven
You're going to be addicted to riding it!
😂😂😂 sipping coffee at almost 30 mph, right into a revert and riding switch backwards while looking at his phone, and continuing to sip coffee. 😂😂😂
Technically, it's tea. I'm trying to cut back on my caffeine intake.
@@TheFloatLifelook out, scro'valone, lots of teas have caffeine too
Super stoked that we're seein more Jeff in these vids lately..best steez in the game
His Floatwheel low key obliterated the GT in a 3 minute video. It’s virtually impossible to nose dive at 15 mph, at 20 mph it’s only 65% duty cycle, and he demonstrated how casual it is to hit 29 mph on a Floatwheel with a phone and cup of coffee in his hand. Game over.
Thank you for making this!!! Since I went FloatWheel/vesc I’ve been saying loud that future Motion boards should have this as well. Also that fm boards used to show us cell health and they clearly took that away. Duty cycle and cell health checks are so damn important.
With the cell health I’m so happy that Tony is listening and hard at work on making that a reality for us.
Man, huge props to surfdado making the float control app. For you fancy folks it even works with your apple watch too from my understanding.
Srsly low key pushback at recent events, Jeff seamlessly shows us what could of been, what is, and what's happening, all while enjoying a nice cuppa, with railroad workers, high speed sprints, and fabulous camera work. We watchin' EDIT I had to watch this a couple more times as it is really truly amazing. So much info in such a short video. Surfdado is the man, as are all the folks working tirelessly and selflessly to find that buttery smooth but tunable ride. I predicted earlier this year that I'd be VESC by January of next, and nothing I see is showing any reason why I shouldn't.
28 mph with a phone and coffee in hand is NOTHING I could ever do on my GT... I want one...
absolutely 100% perfect video. great job Jeff. also shout out to the construction worker.
Nicely done!
future motion: WRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWN
Trust me… this is the last thing they are worried about lol. They got the holiday season coming up and they are about to make bank 🤑💰 Meanwhile vesc users feed off the scraps that fall off the table. Whole lot of new needless features for Vesc users without a whole lot of new innovation 😬
Shots fired!!!! Pew pew!!!! Lets go TFL
Keep the "Jeff throws shade at FM while conspicuously drinking 'coffee'" videos coming.
200% this should be the #1 feature included in the OneWheel App today. The data is there to read...I feel it's completely stupid on Future Motions' part not to include this feature! Nose diving is always my number 1 concern when riding any board. Anyone who's nose dived over 20mph (as I have in past...just once) would want this feature. Really enjoy the boards but man I would love to know how much head-room I have at all times.
I was gonna buy a onewheel but gonna buy a float wheel now
Whenever Jeff has coffee, it's business time.
If you're a lighter rider, Onewheel is all you need. But for heavier Clydesdales, going from a GT to FW is like going from a stock OG Pint to a GT and then some. FWs sheer torque and power is way more apparent on steep hills that you heavy riders are all too familiar with. I'm shocked every time I climb one and I'm still not used to it!
Great video, short, stylistic, simple explanation of the best saftey system for onewheels :)
Duty cycle has always been great tbh
TFL should recruit guys to do a VESC wheel and an app and sell devices! They would be a way bigger and better company!
Jokes on you you. I don’t even have an onewheel.
TY Jeff, for your universal consideration 🤙🏾
My man Jeff doing the work right here🤙
I wish I would have looked into the boards more before buying my gt. Dont get me wrong, i love it, but FM is the apple of onewheels.
Facts Jeff, Makes perfect sense to me…thank you✌️😁
It'd be nice to see how much power it takes to get up and down some hills near my house, because I often think I'm too timid with them. But I really have no way of knowing.
Still need the haptic warning and push back cause obviously you can't be looking at your phone when you're going over 20 mph, but this is a cool way to visualize what's going on for sure.
Nicely done. 👍
Excellent safety feature. If hard the term bandied about in other videos, but not and context purified with it. Thank you. I'll definitely be sending in a feature request with the app that provides: 1. Real-time reporting of the duty cycle, 2. Positive notification (in app) of danger limit being reached. The in app notification will translate to audible or haptic alerts through the phone or smart watches. The issue with the previous audible alert is that it was through the board only which was difficult to discern under most circumstances of riding. (I never heard it unless I was riding by a wall which reflected the sound back at me)
Awesome, come on FM let's do this !
Pushback and haptic feedback work just fine thanks 😊
This is way better then the new haptic buzz update for the FM Onewheel
Sending a letter to FM...perhaps when XR came out, however they do not really listen. They just released a new board with more than a funny range. That totally convinced me to go for the Floatwheel ADV Pro...yes, it is heavier, however the range is what currently limits our rides on XRs, every single time.
30 MPH is a perfect start for me since I prefer to speed when riding (I accept the risks and responsibilities). I was about save for a GTS but ADVs 30 MPH sold me.
Great video very informative. I do think that would be great feature for us FM riders lol
Would be great to have that and control pushback angle on fm boards!
Yep!
That board is looking a bit different! Are we going to get an overview of what you've changed on it?
Looks like v2 plastics in yellow, rail guard, enduro tire, and a custom spray painted 3 on his front pad. Probably also a custom Jeff tune.
yup
@@TheFloatLife release the Jeff tune
Haha… Jeff said dooty
The fact that we got haptic buzz before this really shows how silly FM is being right now.
Very poignant and informative about Duty Cycle and avoiding nosedives on the onewheel clone boards, as well as great advice to request these kinds of features from FM!
Nice light
I’ve been to 27 on my xr and I’ve only done it once because it was so insane. Can’t imagine how much safer a float wheel would feel at that speed
Are those aftermarket bumpers on the float wheel?
Great video. I'm commenting just to test the member badge.
Looks good.
It would be sick if the LED bar on the front foot pad could show you a rough estimate of that data. Even if it’s just for the last 30% or whatever.
If XR had a lightbar, that would be the best data to show on it for sure! Maybe someone can hack the GT lightbar to do it
Floatwheel has this now!
I’m new to Onewheels. I bought a demo XR with 40 miles on it. It does have the haptic buzz firmware. I’m searching how to VESC already.
The Float Life is my religion!
So honest Q: would you recommend, someone planning to buy there next board, buying ADV Pro? If the purchase was in this moment. Would it still be FFM?
i am still waiting for haptic buzz on onewheel punt, that is good enough right?
So I am fairly new to the one wheel game. I fell in love while riding my friends onewheels and I bought my GT brand new in July, and have put almost 1200 miles on it already with absolutely no issues. But in my opinion, and I know that I might be in the minority here, but 20 mph on a one wheel is plenty fast enough for me. A wreck at 20 and your gonna get hurt. A wreck at 25-30.. you're probably goin to the hospital. So im perfectly happy with my completely stock gt.
Can one also get the wrong duty cycle info if the wrong info is entered in the float package cfg?
Would love to know what his thoughts are about the s series.
Well we have one coming next week so be sure to subscribe so you don't miss it!
Please make a how to Vesc GT or link to do so.
I need the FW ADV V.S OW GT vids! Probably buying an adv anyways but still wanna see it
ADV wins on performance, price, repair ability, and customizability. GT wins on ease of being able to purchase and ride out the box right away. Also probably waterproof level as the GT is fairly solid there, but I'm sure ADV will get better with feedback.
@@TheFloatLife the Gt has been great to me but the new update has me ready to move away from FM. I’ll buy me a FW with my tax return
Something I haven't found a solid answer on: is duty cycle adjusted as battery voltage drops?
Yes, it's Voltage based essentially. More complex than that, but all you need to know is it's a pretty damn accurate representation of motor load, at least when trying to anticipate high speed related nosedives
@@nicoaleman Thanks! So that's for high speed nosedives... what about sudden torque demand? For example, if I'm riding at 80% duty cycle with 84V and hit a big pothole but make it through without nosediving, should I expect to be able to do that at 80% duty cycle at 55V? (I'm guessing that 2nd scenario would be lower speed while still at 80% duty cycle, due to the lower voltage.)
@DoctorDugong21 If you're in a scenario where you're already cruising upwards of 80% DC, duty cycle is most likely what's going to be what tops out in a potential nosedive. It's mainly low speed torque like crawling up a hill or hard accelerating from a stop that it could more likely be motor or battery current hitting their limits, causing a nosedive before DC maxes out. This is almost definitely what Haptic Buzz and previously the beep is based on when you hear it go off while jamming the nose or pushing in a high torque scenario
@@DoctorDugong21good question my brain tells me 20% is always 20%
I notice the speed almost directly correlated with the duty cycle.
So on my XR off I’m going 10 mph I’m using maybe 50% duty cycle?
Would absolutely not want to look at a gauge while riding unless it was AR like in a helmet or goggles, but very interested in better management tools at top speed. I'm having trouble even finding tips on TH-cam here.
You can set audio alerts to your phone/headphones at whatever duty cycles you want with VESC. Floatwheel also displays the duty cycle with the light bar on the front footpad if you update the LCM firmware
Earbuds make some sense - thanks!
EUCS have literally had this for years
Why doesn't the board have a steel roller on the front, would it help in a nosedive?
some dont like front wheels because the board can roll back away from you, causing more of a dive
Some people add wheels, but the problem is that on a board like this, once you reach nosedive-levels of speed, no little wheel on the front is going to save you.
Vibes
Hey Jeff, is there a third party Onewheel app for iPhone that can show this info?
Not that I'm aware of
ah dude duty cycle is scary af! I hit 95% the other day 😅😅😅😅 small batteries, time to upgrade!
Very nice... but honestly can't tell if that's a new T.A.C. or just a shirt 👀
Does it work for the Onewheel????
Pog
He said Duty
Can't you set push back to a specific duty cycle so you don't have to look at the app?
Yep! And you can set audible alerts at specific duty cycle and/or speed. Plus many more features.
The Onewheel safety feature they don't have....because it's not a Onewheel. It's better
The only issue I could see with this is the argument that you’d have to be looking at your phone and not the road.
Throwing away my GT now
I did the same and went FloatWheel and it was by far the best decision.
we need that app on Android!
going 45mph while staring at your phone seems like a pretty dubious safety feature
Glancing at a smart watch is safe and simple.
@@RIDE-o-REBELLION-o-FLOATCAST that's true. I'd argue it's only safer if you have a smartwatch, which he does briefly touch on at the end
Pushback or Haptic Buzz could easily be made to be Duty Cycle based instead of speed based, making them dynamic to the board's actual headroom and riding conditions rather than static. I don't see it happening with Pushback, because there's legal implications of why it's set to kick in at 20, but would be awesome for Haptic Buzz to be Duty Cycle based at least. Could make a pretty convincing argument to the CPSC that it enhances the safety of the board compared to the current implementation, which could be deceiving about the amount of headroom left if you're for example trying to haul high speed uphill as a heavy rider in cold temps at low battery (extreme example of course, just emphasizing how a static speed for pushback/buzz isn't very informative)
i think the reason they dont want to show duty cycle on the onewheel app is because they dont want people pushing their board close to 80-90 percent duty constsntly, but thats my assumption. Duty cycle woulrnstill be a nice feature from FM but i am very sure they wouldlnt implement it for a l9ng time
By that logic, you shouldn't have a spedometer then! haha
@@TheFloatLife hey, I'm just guessing lol
They only give us what they want and the 20 mph speed limit is to be compliant with California law AB 604
@@-JohnSmith- easily circumvented by having an "off-road" mode... which is what every last mile ev companies do.
I think if they showed duty cycle everyone would be mad just how little power and headroom a stock FM board has.
FM said they dont condone people looking at their phones when riding at speed. So i dont think this will be a thing for the onewheel app unfortunately...
A safety feature where you have to keep looking at your phone (or watch) while going 20mph+ doesn't seem that safe to me.. Also I know my phone constantly disconnects from my board while riding so this wouldnt be very reliable compared to the haptic buzz
Duty cycle can be monitored through voice alerts to your phone or AirPod. But guess what. The Floatwheel have haptic buzz also. The difference is the rider’s choice and options.
Ideally, you would have pushback and/or haptic buzz be based on Duty Cycle, rather than a static set speed like it is now. Way more informative to the rider since it's dynamic to the ride conditions and gives a more accurate sense of the headroom available.
The amount of skin this would have saved on my elbows and knees is what's truly depressing...
I for one am not willing to stare at a phone or even watch for this live information (I mostly street ride and have zero faith in humanity). However, it would be awesome if there was configurable haptic feedback on the board itself that reports this kind of data. Something like X vibrates in a row for crossing Y% duty cycle, obviously with some kind of back-off so it isn't buzzing all the time when close to a threshold. That way you can keep your eyes on your surroundings and have valuable feedback at the same time.
Yup, that's all easily-ish programmable on VESC platform
@@TheFloatLife Oh damn, looks like I have a winter project!
#giveustheduty
TFL I'd love to hear about what custom parts you've put on your Floatwheel ADV
6" Enduro and TFL Grip... yeah that's it haha
Who is watching their phone while floating that fast?
Staring at my phone while doing 30+ does not sound like a safety feature.
Definitely safer than the haptic buzz! Why feel a little buzz under your feet when you are nearing the max duty of the motor when I could be staring down at my phone trying to watch a little gauge? High speed multitasking is far more advanced! I wish FM knew more about safety, those silly geese.
It works flawless on a smart watch…
Obviously not ideal, but no reason it has to stay limited to being just a number in the app. Pushback and haptic buzz are currently both based on speed, kicking in starting at around 20mph. This is not dynamic, it will kick in at these speeds regardless of riding conditions.
What would be safer is if these were instead based on Duty Cycle rather than a set speed. That would be MUCH more informative to the rider on the board's current load, even if they kept it real conservative by kicking in at like 65% DC. This would make it kick in sooner when the board is under extra load than normal, such as being low battery, going uphill, in cold temps, etc. in order to better reflect how much headroom the board actually has, rather than a basic "you are going 20mph."
@@nicoaleman Then maybe vesc users (since they can do anything) can just integrate a buzz or beep that’s based off DC instead of speed… Any vesc users think of that? Maybe that’s not even possible. Regardless, there’s nothing more “safe” about this feature compared to what FM has… If you want my honest opinion about this feature I feel like this information is pretty much useless…. These boards are getting to the point where they can only go so fast and realistically be able to climb so much… This extra info about DC isn’t really helping you at a certain point….
@dezh2544 Yes, Onewheels can only go so fast, and Duty Cycle based alerts (whether buzz or beep or pushback or otherwise) help give an actual indication of how close you are to that line. FM's current pushback/buzz does not do this, it just tells you you're going 20mph. FM themselves keep touting how important and beneficial it is to have any kind of communication you can from the board to the rider so the rider can be better informed, and this is about just that.
FWIW, I'm comfortable enough on my board that I have a good idea of where this line is regardless and prefer to just ride without any pushback or beep/buzz. But especially for newer riders that aren't in tune with their boards like that yet, this is extremely beneficial to help them associate how much headroom the board has, and how that's affected in different conditions that impact the board's performance.
And to answer your first thing, yeah pretty much from the start, VESC has had tons of ways of alerting at whatever Duty Cycle you want, such as pushback, buzzer, audio alerts through an app, and haptic buzz currently in testing as well. Tons of VESC riders take full advantage of this and love it, it allows them to confidently ride with much better knowledge on just how much headroom is left in the board, so that they can ride accordingly. It's just outright more informative and safer.
@@nicoaleman Good response. Other than the last “it’s just outright… safer”, I can pretty much break even with the argument. Here’s my next overall question and argument that you may not want to tackle here but there’s obviously so much VESC arguments out there. Some say it’s great, others think that all you need to enjoy yourself is a stock board from Onewheel. With so much confidence on your end as a member of float life and an avid VESC user, what’s next? Float life has been built around Onewheel for so long. They constantly bash them and make cheap accessories to piggyback off their success to put money in their own pocket. How long will that go on? Other than a cool channel with some pretty awesome dudes, what do you have to show for it? The argument could be made that VESC isn’t it. VESC is just a community take it or leave it accessory. Will you guys end up making your own board? Actually attempt to out engineer Onewheel and prove them irrelevant? You seem to know so much more than FM… You guys bash FM for not innovating but the fact is they’ve released new products and are providing a growing population of happy riders. Now FM has Bodhi working with them to keep awesome content coming and grow the sport 👀 Like, what’s next from this crew? I think Bodhi knew all along that FM has been doing it right from the start and they are the ones kickstarting, innovating, and satisfying the market… In the meantime there’s a awful lot of smart heads out there that act like FM doesn’t know what in the world they’re doing🧐
Why do you guys hate fm so much lol
What about this video is hateful?
I think they just like onewheeling and wanted to show something cool related to onewheeling
Because when you can’t beat them you just get straight salty. Plus Bodhi (the legend himself) jumped ship on all their little shenanigans and decided to work with the OG company who is actually pushing the sport forward since it was kickstarted… The company with real innovation and something to show for it 🤫
I don't consider these types of video as "hate" but more of constructive criticism towards FM. I think I can speak for TheFloatLife in that they WANT FM to do better and to succeed with their customers because as of right now they are doing the exact opposite of that.
@@VicariousNick55 they complain an awful lot lol. I challenge them to actually create for themselves and make something. Seriously it’s been years they’ve been thinking they know better than onewheel. For goodness sake some Chinese kid put together a board and he had half the work done for him because he copied just about everything his board has to offer and he didn’t even have to worry about most of the firmware 😂
Heh, dookie cycle.
I wish you could have done this on a 15s battery pack. Still wow 😮.
