Josh has a very gentle and peaceful nature about him. A man who has found his "Wa." Lovely to watch him work. I appreciate the simplicity of the products. In an age of 3d design/manufacuring its a pleasure to see his dedication to 2d. I work with cad/cam everyday and it seems to take the fun out of a build. Thank you Josh, keep it up mate.
Thanks for this build video. I built the scout with the speed build kit from flite test. I intended for it to be my trainer. It was my trainer. Then after 4 flights it finally gave its last breath. I learned to fly and in the process I killed an innocent spinning, processing articulating being. But the scout is my phoenix. It shall come back from the ashes as a magnificent warbird the mini F-22.
This mini Scout is such a great flying model, easy to build, easy to fly slow and fast and even with 3 channel able to do some aerobatic like inverted ... Very good for the beginner cause it flies so reliable. It has become my favorite evening flyer for an easy and relaxed fun experience in a smaller yard. Thanks to flitetest for the plans. Soon i'll build a second one for a friend of mine....
I downloaded the plans and built one of these, British foam board is a bit thicker and heavier than the US version so you have to allow for the extra width when cutting. Mine was a bit slow due to the extra weight of some mods so I used a Blue wonder 1300v motor (ebay) , it goes like stink but not so good flying slow. All praise to the Flite test team.
Always wanted to build and fly RC aircraft, but with Canada’s rules I recently thought I was hosed. But this is apparently about 210g so I know what I’m doing during this quarantine! Thank you for the descriptive video.
When you made the "B" folds on your fuselage, you didn't make sure that the tabs on the rear of the fuselage were off of the edge of the table. Bad Josh, bad Josh. Lol Can't wait to buy some of these planes. Nice job!!
Hi Josh. I thank you so much for your contribution to the RC community. You are a true inspiration for me. Your way of explaining things in the most simple and accurate way is absolutely amazing and I think everyone watching you can feel how a great person you are inside. Thank you and keep up the great work together with the wonderful FT team!
I just received a speed build version of this and I have to say it looks like it will be amazing to put together. The packaging and laser cut foam quality is awesome!!! The power packs make everything a breeze as well
Absolutely love all the stoppables, and the Mini Scout is no exception. I would like to see a large version on the MS, as Josh indicated it might be on the way. These are all easy to build and fly. Lots easier that building with balsa! Not to mention the cost! Thanks, FT team, appreciate all the hard work you guys do, even though it does look like a lot of fun.
yes, the mini scout is absolutely a great plane for beginners. Easy to build, with 3 ch. setup: Rudder , Elevator, Throttle: Rocksolid flying envelope. I recommend warmly....
Absolutely agree!! I believe though, the larger Simple Scout is far more docile, and forgiving for a beginner. Especially for flying outside. Either way, the Scout is an outstanding design!! Great Trainer, that can stay with you well past intermediate.
Hey I got to see you guys fly today at the Golf Dome my only regret was I didn't get to say hello. I did buy me some Flite Test stickers. To put on my planes. Great show.
James Casey! If you see them, always say hello. No matter how busy you are or how busy they look. Not a lot of people know that, but they actually live on "Hellos" from FliteTest fans =)
Flitetest your awsome u guys put out a video on the umx radian and without that i wouldn't be learning to fly today i thank you guys sincerely and i would love for u guys to make some more gliders out of one sheet of foam board/ U GUYS ARE THE BEST THANK YOU
Should use Colored Construction Paper in your builds to make them easier to see when flying. Say, Safety Orange, a Bright Red. This way you won't loose them in the Clouds and also makes them easier to Spot after a Crash.
This is just the basic frame. People usually will add color themselves by using tape or paint. I'm not sure if the Minwax coating that is usually used as paint foundation or tape will add too much weight on these small planes though.
For their Build Videos or for others, Use the Colored Con. Paper instead of the white, right off. Some times it's hard to see the Plane while they are filming, do to it Blending into the Clouds because it's %100 white. This way it would make it easier for us viewers to see the plane fly if they used a Colored Con Paper, Safety Orange or more likely Red. No extra weight is added from tape or paint. Just switching White for Red or Orange (or what ever color). And if they don't use a Con Paper in Con. Use some Stickers before Test Flying so we can Actually see the Plane better and not have it Disappearing into the clouds.
ravenlorans I think they tried colored foamboard way back in 2013. They sayd its not as strong as the simple white foam. The reason there is no paper coating or color involved is to keep it simple. Especially if you are new to building and flying, it would be a shame if you crash your beautiful colored plane or if you are to afraid to fly it because you put much effort in the asthetics. That is why they show it that way.
Skyliner04s Not Foam Board. I know that. It was the Black stuff that didn't work. I am talking about Construction Paper in place of Poster Board/Turtle Neck Skins. And if not Construction Paper, Colored Card Stock.
Building this kit is easy, and exactly as described here. Mine has brown paper wrap. Gonna install an old IPS motor from GWS, with a 7060 prop. 3 cell 540 lipo pack. Expecting it to fly well.
I like how the Mt Dew cans slowly accumulate on the right side. I swear Mr. Bixler, if you could replace your own blood with Mt Dew you would. I can't get enough of the build videos. We gotta start seeing challenges with the minis. I'm thinking mini obstacle course (indoor and outdoor), and how many minis can the Krakken hold and launch at the same time.
I just found a way to create a more consistent bevel. Just cut the paper on one side of the foamboard at the place where the blue line of the bevel mark on the plans is before beveling. This makes the angle way more consistent.
This size plane is just right for my small park - and the 2 cell battery is less expensive than a 3 cell. BUT - I want one that is 4 channel so it can do aerobatics . Is there a kit or plane for this?
Hello, what receiver do you recommend for this plane? I'm new to the hobby and the receiver I currently have doesn't seem to be adaptable with the power pack.
Can you list all the electronics you should get if you order from hobby king. I am trying to got for a slow, max flight time, but also have enough power to do flips and other maneuvers later on. I always by from hobby king and i am not quite sure about which motor/esc/prop/battery i should get.
The tiled plans are incorrect in the tail so be sure to watch the video before you cut out your pieces other wise the top will be to long and the bottom will be to short. Great plane easy to build, thanks Josh
Hi. I recently bought a 1806 motor as well as an 20A esc for this plane. When I powered on the motor, It was spinning but it kept switching directions and freezing up... would you be able to tell me if this is a problem with the motor or the ESC and if it’s fixable?
I think it would be awesome if you sold a laser cut pattern on plastic that we could use to trace onto the Dollar Tree foam board. You could also include thicker plastic angle gauges as well. It would be a kit that would likely fit between using printed patterns and pre-cut foam.
At 37:02, you power up with the prop attached but the motor just sitting on the bench, then you yank the stick....luckily you yanked the right one. A noob could have yanked the throttle, and had a live prop dancing on the workbench.
On the podcast they were talking about The servos for the minis and they said that four 5 grams was perfect and that four 9 grams worked but was a bit heavy. Since four servos means four channels (most of the time) I am assuming that they are going to release a four channel one. Hopefully a spit fire or mustang!
My bad! There is a separate article, complete with short video, that shows how to build the Power Pod for all of the Mighty Mini designs. See www.flitetest.com/articles/mighty-minis-power-pod-build. Thanks, Josh!
Note about Josh's comment about glue guns that boil the glue. I have gotten burned by the glue from the AdTech High Temp gun and was wondering how Josh could wipe glue off with his fingers. The AdTech HT gun is way too hot and boils the glue. I have to try the AdTech Pro 200 he recommends.
A few questions. I ordered the speed build kit do I still need to buy a controller and props? Im new at this so im sorry if I said anything wrong in advance
I made the LG and the foam wheels. They will last as long as the plane, with the way I fly. Where else can you get an rc airplane kit, with the hardware and wheels.
You might find them in a local hobby store or online. Just searching for wheel at Hobbyking gives so many options. The one in the video look like these: hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9836__Super_Mega_Light_Wheel_65mm_5pcs_bag_.html
I accidentally put the elivator on the wrong way around, now the hingeline is on the other side. I made the control horn a little longer to conpensate for the actual hinge being a little closer. Will this pose a problem?
My servos are centered but because I cannot put the servo arm exactly at 90 degrees I have less throw one way and trimming seems to reduce it the other direction. Is there any solution to this?
I can't see that battery enough to identify it, but it looks like it's this servo tester: www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11780__Turnigy_760LV_HV_Dual_Pulse_Width_Selectable_Servo_Tester.html It works with DC 3~12.6V so anything from 1S to 3S LiPo.
Balu Thanks for the info but already am familiar with the servo tester shown. Thought it was a novel way of powering it that they had used. I can make out from the video that its probably a 6V 4 cell Nimh LSD or NiZN Battery, just wanted to be sure.
G Watson I think you are right. It looks like round cells which I haven't seen in LiPos that size. FliteTest is on the road right now, but perhaps they can help you later. :)
RCflyer729 You can buy 5mm extruded polystyrene laminated with paper in the EU. The one I'm using is "Airplac 1" from a company called Isopor, but they only sell b2b. There's also a dutch company "foamboarden" IIRC who sells similar foamboard. A lot of hobby / craft shops have foamboard as backing for posters. Just make sure you don't get the Kapa product line which is a different foam made from polyurethane which is twice as heavy and won't work for these minis. Also FliteTest is going to distribute rebranded Adams Readi-Board as "Flite Test Foamboard" all over the world soon.
i've just build it using 6mm depron. Weight without battery - 120g (with linkage stoppers and a lot of wires , bullet connectors etc) vs 115g from plans.
littleferrhis I have contacted Shai (the inventor of the PowerUp3) while it was still in development. He said his marketing team was going to contact FliteTest but I'm not sure if that happened.
On your website the recommended parts list says 4 servos and you only need two. just letting you know so you can fix it, unless i misunderstood what it says.
Yeah .. please correct. I was eager to get all the parts needed, and so I ordered 4 servos before I notices you only needed 2. Spares is good I suppose.
hello flitest i have a question i go to your site and get the plans for the FT Mini Scout plane and when i look at it i dont know the sizes of the parts. How would i know the sizes of the parts?
They have a list of recommended electronics on the store: store.flitetest.com/ft-mini-scout-speed-build-kit/ - not sure which one of these was used in this build though.
Josh...tauNt is to egg on ...taugHt is tight/stiff ....unless you are talking smack to the paper while gluing it...then...yeah, that's cool...if you're into that sorta thing LOL
Your instructions-verbal and visual-are so clear it is a pleasure to just watch your presentations.

Thjanks big time for the two mighty mini videos/plans on Wednesday. Hope to cut some foam and not fingers over the weekend. Cheers
2 build video in a day??
Best day ever!!
Thanks Josh
3, including the mini pod :D
Build this one last night. Quick and easy with the speedbuild kit.
Can't wait to maiden this one.
Thanks for this build video. I built the scout with the speed build kit from flite test. I intended for it to be my trainer. It was my trainer. Then after 4 flights it finally gave its last breath. Should use Colored Construction Paper in your builds to make them easier to see when flying. Say, Safety Orange, a Bright Red. This way you won't loose them in the Clouds and also makes them easier to Spot after a Crash.
There are decals to buy from their store if you want. The possibilities are endless even without them.

i am scratch building the mini scout using 2 x 3.7g servos for ele & rud and a 5g for ailerons! power unit is a turnigy park 250 hope this fly's ok
cool looking plane!
The holidays are coming, you should decorate a tree using planes! Streamers, and stuff. Then put the star on with a quadcopter! Just a thought
At 37:02, you power up with the prop attached but the motor just sitting on the bench, then you yank the stick....luckily you yanked the right one.

It's all part of the FliteTest Bingo. Just like "bead of glue", "table as your friend", ... ;-)

Thank you josh your video are just amazing
Love the idea of the mighty minis but I'm wondering if you guys have any plans to do a 4 channel plane, if it's even possible?

Great video as usual, Josh. But did I miss how to build the power pod? Also, are you using the Power Pack A for this design? Thanks!
My bad! There is a separate article, complete with short video, that shows how to build the Power Pod for all of the Mighty Mini designs. See www.flitetest.com/articles/mighty-minis-power-pod-build. Thanks, Josh!

Do I need a cw or a ccw motor?
Another excellent build!
With a plane like this without ailerons, the rudder servo is plugged into the aileron channel (right stick mode 2)?
A few questions. I ordered the speed build kit do I still need to buy a controller and props? Im new at this so im sorry if I said anything wrong in advance
will you guys be doing a review on the MESA rc foam fighters f-18?
How thick is the plasticard used for the fuselage top? Thanks...
What plane would you recommend for a person with some flying experience, but no building experience?
I am from BANGLADESH bro... i like your show very much.. and also you are a nice guy.. where is scott?? He is a nice guy too...
He got herpes, couldn't live with himself, and jumped off a cliff.
I made the LG and the foam wheels. They will last as long as the plane, with the way I fly. Where else can you get an rc airplane kit, with the hardware and wheels.
Back ordered .... Everything is backordered....
hi everyone. May i ask what kind of foam is this? and can i use depron foam to build this plane?
いつも、素晴らしい機体ですね!
とても飛ばしやすい機体とスケール 、作って飛ばしたいです。
Hi, you guys are doing a great job! Where can I get the wheels like the ones in the video of the mini scout?
You might find them in a local hobby store or online. Just searching for wheel at Hobbyking gives so many options. The one in the video look like these: hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9836__Super_Mega_Light_Wheel_65mm_5pcs_bag_.html
Balu
Thanks Balu, I'm on it!
Wrap servo in blue painters tape then hot glue. Its easy to reuse servo. Servo won't fall off.
Can the migthy mini scout be put with brushless motor HBM 2812-1100 BLDC motor???? please tell me.
Will a 6 channel RC work for this plane?
Plss answer we have started to work on this project
IF your doing a scratch build how much do you cut down for the fuselage
I accidentally put the elivator on the wrong way around, now the hingeline is on the other side. I made the control horn a little longer to conpensate for the actual hinge being a little closer. Will this pose a problem?
My servos are centered but because I cannot put the servo arm exactly at 90 degrees I have less throw one way and trimming seems to reduce it the other direction. Is there any solution to this?
Does the mini power pod materials come with the kit or do you have to build it separately ???
***** It comes with a kit just go to FliteTest.com Store
You may have answered this previously so forgive, but what specific battery are you using to power that servo tester? Please and thankyou.
If you want ailerons you can use 1 microservo with a dubble arm for weight saving
love the minis there great!!!
Is it possible to make it out of depron and should I use 3 mm or 6 mm? I life in the eu and I can't buy foamboard close.
I use depron in the UK, 3mm should be perfect for this size plane
defiantly use 3mm do you have zfold foam at your local hardware store it is really cheep and is almost just as good as depron
Weight without battery - 120g (with linkage stoppers and a lot of wires , bullet connectors etc) vs 115g from plans.
nice! I build mine out of 3 mm flies great. I have a vid on my channel of it.
Could you guys do a review of the powerup 3 rc paper airplane, it looks amazing awesome and innovative.
littleferrhis I have contacted Shai (the inventor of the PowerUp3) while it was still in development. He said his marketing team was going to contact FliteTest but I'm not sure if that happened.
Balu Oh cool! It just seemed like something they would review.
On your website the recommended parts list says 4 servos and you only need two. just letting you know so you can fix it, unless i misunderstood what it says.
It might be "2 servos per plane"?
Balu I was sort of thinking that but it's on one plane's specific list and the other things aren't doubled.
NoStruggle Armor Maybe it's the four recommended servos?
Yeah .. please correct. I was eager to get all the parts needed, and so I ordered 4 servos before I notices you only needed 2. Spares is good I suppose.
Is there any other way of attaching the servos without gluing then? Like if i wanted to use them later in another plane?
Thanks heaps, first time building a scratch build
+Jesse Cahill Double sided tape like they use in R/C car servos i i think.
What is the next flight event you guys are going to
They are on their way to Horizon Indoor right now ;).
How much would this cost in all? (Including transmitter and receiver.)
TheWildGrantalope about $200
Hi flite test! It would be awesome if you did a ww1 special, like say about ww1 aviation then do a dogfight with ww1 hi planes or something!
Thanks :D
45th! Great job guys!
Would this be a good beginner plane?
hello flitest i have a question i go to your site and get the plans for the FT Mini Scout plane and when i look at it i dont know the sizes of the parts. How would i know the sizes of the parts?
You can print out the tiled plans and those will be scale.
very good instructions
Is there any way to make the landing gear removable?
☺♥☺
Hy, Can someone tell me how many time does the 15dollar shipping takes to arrive to spain?
What was the setup used in this video for the scout. Battery? Motor? esc?
They have a list of recommended electronics on the store: store.flitetest.com/ft-mini-scout-speed-build-kit/ - not sure which one of these was used in this build though.
Please can you release a mini nutball kit?!
I saw that the material has layer. Is that pvc foam board?
Can I use a 1000 mah gens ace 2s lipo with this plane? It weights 68 grams. This extra 10-20 grams will ruin the flight quality?
Doubt it. Just scootch it in farther back in the plane.
If I want to build this plane how much does it cost? Including all the electronics and the 'controller'
about 100 dollars
How do you set it up with the current esc it comes with
hi friends, how much is the flight time with a lipo 2s 1100mah
Hey sometime you guys should check out the hovership mhq mini quad frame!
Where can I get the bits for the sportster like the battery etc
Josh...tauNt is to egg on ...taugHt is tight/stiff ....unless you are talking smack to the paper while gluing it...then...yeah, that's cool...if you're into that sorta thing LOL
What ESC are they using?
can this be changed up to fly like the Magnum reloaded?
Can anyone fill me in on how the aircore powercore goes into the scout any info would be much appreciated
