The Word "tongues" , in the original Greek that the N.T. was written in, is singular not plural and means " another language" and " a language". So, for example, in Acts ch.2 When the believers recieved the Holy Spirit it actually reads, "..and they began to speak in another language as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance . Or "..and they began to speak in a language as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance". Three times the men in the crowd asked one another how they were hearing what the believers were saying in their native language. The miracle for those in the crowd wasn't that the believers were miraculously speaking in their native language but that the believers were all speaking in one spiritual language and the men Heard what they were saying in their native languages. This is an example of speaking in " tongues" as the first evidence that a believer has recieved the Holy Spirit and a sign to unbelievers.( 1Cor.14:22)
