I came here to say the exact same thing… it’s like watching your lost family member being given a loving home. 🌹💐🌸 On another note…. So many people go without clothing and warm blankets. There’s no reason any of these items should ever be thrown away. Makes me so sad.
This is an oldie... I made this exact afghan in 1977 for my mother in law for Christmas. It was in a Leisure Arts pamphlet. I was 20 yrs old. My MIL is now 93 and it is still across the foot of her antique bed ❤ Thank you for recycling the blanket into another thing of beauty!
10 years ago, I used to work at a decent sized thrift store run by a church organization to raise money for charity, literally 50 cents shirts kinda thrift. We had the Scarf Wall, which was 5 enormous heavy wood bookshelves stuffed with any crocheted, knitted or otherwise handmade scarf, hat or accessory, and typically we had a hanging rack next to it filled with any of the other handmade items, blankets, sweaters, whatever. Every so often, a lady would come in for donations and scoop everything off to give to the local homeless shelters. So much handmade stuff went through that store
I'm a bus driver who gets those scarves and hats for cold days to give away. I try to find the connection between hand made things that contain love and care and those without love or care. 🚌
Holy Moly! I had to go check my closet!! I made this very one in the 1970s. It's still here. Whew! Thought maybe I had given it to a thrift store. Will have to see if I can do this. Many components to this afghan - Tunisian crochet is that center white section. The roses are embroidery of course. I added my initials and the date on mine.
It makes me sad when I see something hand made in the thrift or at garage sales. I bought a quilt not in perfect condition from a man in his 70's. I asked him if he knew who made it, it was made by his grandma. His grandma!! I asked if he was sure he wanted to sell it. He said yes for $2.00.
That's crazy! I'm glad it appears to have landed in good hands. He apparently didn't think much of his grandmother, or hadn't ever watched her and all the love she likely put into making quilts.
You know, while it's sad, it's better that he let it go to you who would love it, rather than getting tossed, which happens to a lot of old folks' stuff when they pass.
As a fiber artist if someone modded a piece I made I would have no problem with it. We make these things to be used and shown off, and you're giving it a new chance to do both.
I'm not sure if I'd be happy with one of my pieces being modified like this, but as @NettleAbsentmindedly said, it's two artists collaborating. And I really would prefer upcycling to landfill. It's tragic that anything handmade and beautiful wound up in a tip. As for handmade and not beautiful, I'd want it to stay in its family for as long as it gave someone good memories.
It makes me so happy knowing my nephew still sleeps with his baby blanket I made him 10 years ago! I’ve rescued every handmade blanket my family or friends or coworkers have talked about throwing away. I know just how many hours it takes to hand make something. I’m glad people are upcycling handmade things.
@@SusieQ3I did too till my mom wanted to put it in my baby box. It wasn’t handmade since it was a fabric piece I took from her before she could make it into pajamas for me when I was really little. It was on my bed till I was around 17 or 18 😊
That looks so COZY! And the colors make it old school homey. Like grandmas hugs. 🤔I’m feeling a hot chocolate with a good book and fireplace vibe here. Of course snow outside too.
It's really sad to see all that work just sitting there in the store, but you turned that piece into something even more beautiful, I wish there were more people like you that turned works that people like me make into something that will be loved for a lot longer

I just left a comment on a similar one to yours. I adore crocheting, but I never keep any of my pieces. I really don’t enjoy the look of crochet. All my pieces are given away, or donated to places like goodwill. So, all is not lost. Things aren’t always as they seem. When I donate, I know someone who loves crochet blankets etc will get something special for them, and not have to pay a small fortune for them 😊
@@kiwigirlNZ I give away all of my crafts as well. I can make more, I have no need for them! If I think I did a particularly good job, I take a photo before I give it away. If friends and family kept everything I gave them they'd be drowning in it! It's all good!
I’m in a crochet group and there are always many people upset about crochet items ending up in second hand shops, but I always say I’d rather see those items there being sold cheap so others have the chance to buy handmade items they may not have been able to afford before. Now they can be bought, used and appreciated, rather than sat unused in a cupboard somewhere. But this, well this is just a wonderful way to reuse a crochet blanket. Love it.
Totally with you. Just a thought I would like to share...some of us do not have anyone in our lives that was able to gift us these loving and precious items. So, if I ever come across one at a thrift store, etc., I promise to cherish it!
As someone who crochets this is amazing. I already have some agreements on what is to happen to my big pieces but I love this. I would recommend sewing before cutting because there are some stitches that are not forgiving to cutting at all. It’ll save you grief
That’s not always the case. I *love* to crochet, but I don’t keep any pieces. Oddly enough, I really don’t like the way crochet looks. All my pieces are donated
I think I remember hearing this in a movie, tv show, or something, but I can't remember. Do you have an idea of what I'm talking about? I just can't place where I heard it from.
Beautiful way to repurpose. May I suggest that you can also have these cleaned and turn them into small baby blankets or like a stuffed animal to hospitals, for their pediatrics centers. My community had women who would do this, for our lil ones who had to be hospitalized. ❤
I have a zillion crocheted blankets from my grandma and it breaks my heart to think of those sitting unloved at a thrift store and then ending up in a landfill.😢 Mine are heirlooms that I hope are passed down for years and years. Somebody put their heart and soul into hand making these and they deserve good homes. Well done on the upcycling!
You should get a few tags with her name on them and sew them onto the blankets. If you know the year the blanket was made, you could add that to. Etsy sells custom-made tages for people's projects. Then it won't ever be forgotten who made it, after a few generations' information can get lost.
Crochet and knit items are not that great for animal shelter use. Thier nails can get caught up in them and cause injury, dogs can chew blankets and eat them. Yarn is very bad if eaten. I once saw a liytle dog who got thier leg tangled in a yarn blanket and it cut off circulation because the dog spun and spun and made it tight. It was ok in the end but could have ended badly. Every animal place I have ever worked for never allowed yarn blankets. They were either rejected upon donation and given back or thrown out. But they could never be given to the animals, for safety.
Super beautiful! Bless you and your loved ones❤❤❤❤ To have the vision of how something can be made new and elegant, is a real talent. Super-applause! ❤❤❤❤
If no one has told you, crochet is connected to the stitch next to it like a typewriter making a line of text across a page. The first cut of this video was correct to keep it from unraveling. If you don't cut across the row, you won't have an issue. Knitting, on the other hand, has the stitch connected to the one above it. This is why machines can duplicate knitting but not crochet. So if you cut large knits, stitch it quick and lock it down.
