So AV is basically just a time unit. Speed is distance/time, so it's distance/AV in this game. A character will act at distance == 10000. So a character with 200 speed will act 3 times in the first cycle, because the first cycle's duration is 150AV, and with 200 speed the character will travel 200 *150 == 30k distance, which translate to 3 actions.
Good speed guide i finally understood how it fully works. I had 2 vonwag piece I strong boxed when I started the game, thanks to your guide, I finally 0 cycle with 155 SPD sparkle with vonwag and S3 DD on tingyun!
ok so basically, we just have to treat it as an equivalent to the speed formula in physics of speed = distance / time. in this case, distance is turns taken, with 10000 units for each turn, and action value is time. there are time thresholds that mark each cycle in moc so we just choose our speed threshold to match the amount of turns we want to take in an moc time threshold. action value advance cuts the distance required to travel. if we rearrange the formula to time = distance / speed, we can tell that less distance with the same speed means that less time was taken, which helps you to squeeze into those moc thresholds. temporary speed boost just means that we have to calculate the units of time taken by each turn, at the character's different speeds, and add them individually to get the total amount of time.
to my understanding the dumbed down version of all this is your unit has to move 10000 units in 1 cycle to have an action. If you want your unit to act twice add another 10000 units and divide it by the cycles AV (150 for the first cycle and 100 for all the following) this will give you your required speed for taking the desired actions per cycle you want. However there are ways around this such as ruan mei's talent and huohuo's e1 that can lessen the speed requirements. As for action advance if you have a s5 DDD which is 24% AV advance you would take 24% of 10000 (the amount of units your characters have to travel to take one action in a cycle) which would be 2400 and subtract it from your desired turns per cycle you want. example: "I want sparkle to move 3 times in the first cycle" so you would do 30000 - 2400 and divide it by the first cycles AV requirement which is 150 so it would look like (30000 - 2400) /150 = 184 speed WITH s5 DDD to move 3 times on the first cycle with sparkle. As for speed buffs the TLDR is it doesn't really help with gaining another action in a cycle unless you have asta with DDD easily digestible guide NEUTRALLY speaking 🫡
Temporary speed buffs do help units act before the enemy however, even if it does not result in more actions in the cycle. A notable example of this is with Jing Yuan before sparkle came out, as he needed to outspeed his own lightning lord so that he could reach 7-10 stacks before it moved. This was mostly hanya and asta, but also tingyun e1 if your speed subs were not good enough. Now that speed requirement has been offloaded to sparkle herself. Moreover, dot teams hypothetically benefit from asta quite a bit as moving before an enemy allows them to stack more damage on their DoTs, but our current bis dot teams currently supplement their own speed needs and the damage is fine.
That's basically it. It sounds complicated on the surface but as soon as you dig a little deeper you find it's not that complicated really. It's just a race track and SPD is how fast you make laps.
Forget the numbers for a sec. Action advance is basically getting dragged ahead instantly/teleported by whatever value you got buffed/hit by. For example you ran half the lap already, and sparkle hits you with her skill and you will advance by 50%, another half of the lap, which makes you finish the lap and move first next. However if you only ran 20% of a lap, and sparkle tries to pull you ahead, you'll only end up at 70% finished lap which is why you don't get to always move next if there's another unit/enemy who's finishing the lap before you at 70% + And then speed determines how fast you run those laps like Pokke said, he explained that well.
So lets say hoyo make a new harmony 5* and her ult give all the team 25%adv, we could get 3 actions in 1 cycle with only (30000-8900)/150 =140.67 spd ult+dddV+vonwaq.... and with all that + wind set (30000-11400)/150=124 spd, that would be awesome!😎
The thing is that there will be more speed tuning characters and light cones in the future, so it’s very easy to mess up the whole thing and you need to calculate and gear again… 😂
Great guide on breaking down speed. My only question, cause I'm awful at speed tuning in general, is why does it matter that she goes three times in a cycle rather than building her for two turns and focus more on building her crit dmg?
more skill uses means more action advances for your dps meaning your dps gets more turns more often than not more turns basically always is more impactful than higher crits
You didn't explain, that action_forward can be less than specified: For example, on Sparkle turn your DPS has AV < 10000/speed * 0.5. When Sparkle applies action forward, DPS AV becomes zero instead of negative. Actually, doing calculations in "distances" instead of "action values" is kinda bad idea because of this little thing...
Okay so here's my question: if my dps cant reach a spd of atleast 134, should i use attack boots instead? Does 100 spd vs 125 spd on dps really makes a difference? (Assuming the base spd for dps is 100) Or its just 100 or 134. If anyone can answer this im very thankful!
Hmm what happens to speed buff that happens in between? Like say 1st person already went and then the 3rd person gave the 1st person a speed buff during 3rd person’s turn? How is 1st person’s action value getting calculated? And how does the speed buff affect it when it didn’t happen in the beginning but in the middle? Please excuse my poor wording and lack of better terms as I’m kinda struggling to explain my question very well. 😅
Thanks so much for the video Mr. Pokke! This may be a silly question but I just want to make sure I’m clear on this. If let’s say dance, dance, dance action forwards 24% a unit who only needs say 4% to go again, does the excess carry into the continued calculation for the character’s next action (so they would only need to cover 8000units/80% for their next action) or is the excess lost?
While I get this (mostly 😂), my relics just don‘t allow for speed tuning beyond the usual 134+ and maybe one character 154+ Doing it with what I have is just frustrating. Jingliu is too fast, I can’t equip two fast Harmony characters, everyone has different opinions on Kafka vs BS speed etc etc

And surely there will be more enemies like that in the future. So I don't care that much about that. I get it that Bronya need 134 spd if dps is 135. So if you do basic, skill, skill rotation on Bronya then your speed goal would be something like: - For 4 actions in 2 cycles: (40000 - 3000) / 250 = 148 spd - For 6 actions in 3 cycles: (60000 - 6000) / 350 = 154.286 spd ...etc

Great guide on breaking down speed. My only question, cause I'm awful at speed tuning in general, is why does it matter that she goes three times in a cycle rather than building her for two turns and focus more on building her crit dmg?
she doesn’t scale enough off of crit dmg for 2 high damage turns to equal 3 slightly less high damage turns
Extra dps turn since she pulls up a character
Crit dmg has diminishing returns above 160 so it's better to build more speed and get more DPS turns
Because one extra turn for Sparkle means an extra turn for your DPS character, and an extra turn is generally always better than a bit better buffing.
more skill uses means more action advances for your dps meaning your dps gets more turns
