I was really upset to see Sonya's ending, because it didn't see right to have her sacrificed and become a witch too. But then I remembered, that with no Duma to sacrifice her to, that she actually just started a dope-ass witch sorority and everyone presumed that she was more than just an average mage.

I picked Sonya because she seemed to not care about that guy she worked for and because she's banging. Then as I went through the game, I realized I would never pick Deen after using Sonya for everything :< Sorry Deen, you'll always die in my playthroughs
I’m just going to put this here because it is never directly stated in the game. A conversation between Nuibaba, Berkut, and Rinea has Nuibaba mention Hestia and Marla (Sonya’s sisters) were offered to Duma and that in return Jedah got them back with more potent magic. Rinea responds to this with, “His own daughters? How dreadful!” Marla’s quotes don’t mention anything other than devotion to Duma, but Hestia, in the final battle, has her mention her sister Sonya by name. Hestia’s final battle quotes are very interesting to me, since she whines how she can’t live freely as Sonya does and upon death has an epiphany that has her realize that she too could have lived how she wanted. She seems to still have a part of her soul despite being sacrificed. Perhaps that’s the cure that Sonya found; finding a witch’s soul and bringing it out. Witches may not be complete husks of a person’s body.
It feels like, when they do the "choose one character of two" thing it rarely feels justified in-narrative. At least SOV (calling it that because "Echoes" will likely become an umbrella title for FE remakes!) has an in-story reason for why Deen/Sonya dies and the other lives, but it's too bad that comes at the expense of story significance (and one being so bland in comparison that NOBODY picks him). Don't know how it would be implemented, granted... but still! [Not that FE7 - no matter how much I love it - does anymore justice for Karel/Harken, or even Wallace/Geitz outside of a mild battlefield change.) I actually ran into a fanfic which takes a third option of sorts - Celica's group decides to fight Deen for practical reasons, but then Sonya comes to his aid during the battle; in the end, both survive the day by virtue of her teleporting them OUT of the battlefield when the odds aren't in their favour.

I have my own story that I thought of. I'm in the process of drawing my characters. When I'm done drawing the more important characters I'm going to write about each one of them. You see, I've never seen a show that's a mix of fantasy and Christianity. That's how I want my story to be.
I think your theory on Sonya is fairly plausible, as in Shadows of Valentia they make it clear that Witches are what remains of women who offered their souls up to Duma. So with Duma being gone, there's not really any way for her to offer up her soul to him and receive power in return.
I believe she maybe the only character that has the dlc class that fits her pretty well, the Enchantress class. Having to use more, death, and (forgot?).
I've always thought that Sonya, never became the type of witch we know. Duma being dead, she can't be sacrificed to him anymore. She became some type of "white" witch, who helps people around the world.
im so so glad someone else sees the immense and deep character that sonya has. i got her in my first run just because i favored her appearance over deen and shes grown to be my favorite character in all of fire emblem. this video points out all the things i love about her and some i never even thought about, like the masking thing (something i never knew about and its a spot on characteristic for myself) and the thought that she could be ace which blew my mind but it all makes sense! and i love it!! ik im posting this months after the video was released but if you see this. thank you so much for this beautiful and amazing video

This is probably the fanfic author in me seeing something that isn't there, but I think some tragedy in the past left Jedah with a dead wife and 3 very young daughters. Unable to care for them, he placed them in a priory hoping it would provide a better life for them than he could, and then dedicated himself fully to his faith. He had a harsh interpretation of Duma's already harsh teachings, and as Duma's sanity drained away, he turned to more and more desperate and morally questionable methods to help his god. We know what happens from there. Jedah just can't picture a world without gods. He was just as dependent on Duma as a typical Zofian was on Mila. For all we know, Silque's mother could've been Jedah's wife.
I like to think Nuibaba was Jedah's former lover, and that their daughters were a result of an affair. there's both family resemblance (between Nuibaba, Sonya, Marla and Hestia), and Nuibaba and Jedah's ages match up well enough. not to mention you face Marla in the map right before Nuibaba's in act 4 of alm's path.
Actually! i just checked, and her gender was kinda vague in the original gaiden, but as "baba" means "hag" in japanese, you can pretty much assume she was a woman. Nuibaba being a man in gaiden was only in a fantranslation :)
If someone prefers having a strong Dread Fighter than a mediocre mage, picking Deen is completely understandable since he's really good. He's actually kinda interesting as a character, but very underdeveloped
The base conversation where Sonya mentions her sisters makes me think of the Whitewing sisters. Specifically she descripes Palla and Catria's personalities. That makes Sonya a foil, in a sense, to Est. This makes me wish she had a support with Est.
Now that I think about it Sonya is somewhat of a possibility for what Est could be. If you think about what Est had to go through she could have well ended up much more cynical than she is in the Archanea games.
@@bldmeals2187 if you follow sonya's characterization, she folds her sister's personalities into her own as a coping mechanism for her loss, it's quite clear as a result that the three of them were close, so it'd be interesting not to see est become Sonya, but rather if Sonya had kept close to her sisters like Est. it would be strange to see Sonya as a total ray of sunshine like Est is.
@@ZerkMonsterHunter You're right. But I was thinking more on the hypothetical side of things. Est has many issues as well. If I remember correctly, by the end of New Mystery, she was kidnapped thrice, divorced her husband, and has a bit of an inferiority complex. I think Est is a much more interesting character because she keeps smiling and being bubbly.
I know I'm late to the party, but I have an extra cliff note to add here. Another aspect that subtly references her true colours is her battle portrait. If she has the advantage, you'd initially expect someone like her to flash a smug grin with a teasing wink or something. Yet instead, she appears to break out into a fierce war cry, almost as though just a little of her rage and hatred toward Jedah is leaking through, or she's even purposely taking some of it out on whatever poor enemy happens to be at her mercy in the moment.
After the Sonya and Genny conversation I started humming along with the music and started to question which game it came from... Monster Hunter Generations was a great fire emblem game man, Mizutsune was my favourtie character from that game too actually. Maybe make an Analysis on her?

I always thought that Sonya went to Nuibaba’s adobe, and people probably saw magic assuming that it was another witch there, but it was just Sonya, and that the reason Sonya never revealed herself was so she wouldn’t be bothered while trying to find a cure.
Sonya is a really good unit, though I didn't train her enough in Echoes due to me wanting to finish the story first and using characters like Mae, Boey, Saber, and my personal favorites of Celica's group the Archanean Whitewing sisters Palla, Catria, and Est (since shadow dragon was my first game and they were strong). Sonya is my go to mage in Heroes especially when dealing with Reinhardt. Nice oversight of Sonya too. She is mich better than the Sonia in Blazing Sword. that'
Rsp2264 Deen is Better IMO, but Sonya is not bad (Atleast in gaiden ). In Heroes, she's pretty good, but can easily be killed in heroes if fighting a distant counter sword unit.
Her story really hits hard for me, because I also have to older sisters with similar traits respectively. When I heard this, I teared up. I tried imagining if my sisters sacrificed themselves. Man, that hit deep.

Didnt play echoes as I dont have a 3Ds but damn I fell in love with Sonya at first sight and when I got not just 1 but 2 in Heroes and got to know more about her I couldnt help but use my summoner support on her, she is one of my fav. characters now thanks to research about her and I am really upset she isnt a major character in the echoes story
she has a lot larger of a role than most characters, if you do at any point pick up echoes i'd recommend hiring her over deen, she's a much better unit than him too.
I played Echoes just recently, and I happened to recruit Sonya in my playthrough. I saw all the base and support conversations, but I didn't know that you can attack and kill Jedah, because if you try attacking, or read his skill descriptions, it says he repels all attacks. Then I just evaded him in the two stages he appears, and never saw this interaction of her. I just happened to understand what became of her sisters because I entered their ranges in the final stage, thus seeing what they had to say. But this talk of revenge was completely lost on me. Sonya then just looked like a tragic character, tagging along for the ride. Maybe a flaw in the game, but I still enjoyed Echoes very much, for all it brings to the franchise.
Lacking doalogue with Jedah probably wasn't an oversight...I wouldn't say it's intentional either though. Shadows of Valentia just didn't try very hard when it came to boss dialogue. If anything it's surprising she got that one conversation with Jedah in the swamp given the rest of the games track record.
I my last playthrough of FE: Echoes, Hestia DOES directly bring up Sonya, saying something along the lines of "Why should you get to live freely?" Though, what was kind of strange to me, is that she didn't actually say this to Sonya in my playthrough. I had Palla engage her in battle.

Why wouldn't it? Isn't it because humans all find something beautiful and disgusting, and having collections of useful and none useful items. I don't believe we would dislike everything about nature, just that their maybe a lot who doesn't take a good look up and seeing the sky's or scenery. We find it beautiful. @@ZerkMonsterHunter The fact that in order to become a Witch, a woman must give up her soul to Duma. By that point, Duma is no more. However, I see this in different ways: 1-By saying ''witch'' it means ''female mage'' which is not how it's seen often in Fire Emblem, so this is not really relevant. If it is, however, Sonya can still be that ''witch''. 2-That witch is just a random witch that ''survived'' during the war. Very unlikely, though. 3-Sonya somehow transformed into a witch searching for a cure for witchness, like you said. The thing that is very confusing is the fact that Sonya left Valentia. If in some point of her trip, she was turned into a witch, why would she return to Valentia? This is why I think that witch is not Sonya, plus the Duma thing.
The one thing I hate about Sonya is her map. Why is she aligned with witches? It would be smarter if she had units that are physical units, like mercenaries and archers, and Pegasus knights, because Pegasus are the only units that aren't slowed by the sand.

I clicked on the video because I love mages. I didn't know what to expect from Sonya. What I liked about the video was how you broke down the character and didn't make it dreadful. Some people are better at giving information than others. As for Sonya specificly I found it was interesting in how she decided to handle the stress and what she'd do for the next (?) generation.

Out of ALL the revenge references you could have made, you didn't even TRY to make a joke about Sasuke, who was the guy out for revenge, while Naruto was the power of friendship user? Such a missed opportunity. XD But I genuinely did enjoy this character analysis. Really gave me an insight about Sonya and makes me see her in a new light that I cannot help but admire. Reminds me of Ghast's Support Science. And the way you explained about the last chapter and how she doesn't even try to converse with Jedah or her sisters to be a sign that she's completely let go of her vengeance and just pities them was actually very impressive, as I would never have made that kind of assessment. Great video on Sonya. She maybe a crappy unit due to her growth stats but she is a interesting character. She may have show pity to her idiot of a father Jedah in her final battle quote but I, and the rest of us fire emblem fans(including the ones who like Jedah) DO NOT and he finally get whats comming to him after the evil things he has done(including selling Celica's soul to Duma and using her to fight and/or kill Alm) thanks to his blind faith in Duma.

I know I'm late to the party, but I have an extra cliff note to add here. Another aspect that subtly references her true colours is her battle portrait. If she has the advantage, you'd initially expect someone like her to flash a smug grin with a teasing wink or something. Yet instead, she appears to break out into a fierce war cry, almost as though just a little of her rage and hatred toward Jedah is leaking through, or she's even purposely taking some of it out on whatever poor enemy happens to be at her mercy in the moment.

After the Sonya and Genny conversation I started humming along with the music and started to question which game it came from... Monster Hunter Generations was a great fire emblem game man, Mizutsune was my favourtie character from that game too actually. Maybe make an Analysis on her?

I always thought that Sonya went to Nuibaba’s adobe, and people probably saw magic assuming that it was another witch there, but it was just Sonya, and that the reason Sonya never revealed herself was so she wouldn’t be bothered while trying to find a cure.

Sonya is a really good unit, though I didn't train her enough in Echoes due to me wanting to finish the story first and using characters like Mae, Boey, Saber, and my personal favorites of Celica's group the Archanean Whitewing sisters Palla, Catria, and Est (since shadow dragon was my first game and they were strong). Sonya is my go to mage in Heroes especially when dealing with Reinhardt. Nice oversight of Sonya too. She is mich better than the Sonia in Blazing Sword. that'
Rsp2264 Deen is Better IMO, but Sonya is not bad (Atleast in gaiden ). In Heroes, she's pretty good, but can easily be killed in heroes if fighting a distant counter sword unit.
Her story really hits hard for me, because I also have to older sisters with similar traits respectively. When I heard this, I teared up. I tried imagining if my sisters sacrificed themselves. Man, that hit deep.

Didnt play echoes as I dont have a 3Ds but damn I fell in love with Sonya at first sight and when I got not just 1 but 2 in Heroes and got to know more about her I couldnt help but use my summoner support on her, she is one of my fav. characters now thanks to research about her and I am really upset she isnt a major character in the echoes story
she has a lot larger of a role than most characters, if you do at any point pick up echoes i'd recommend hiring her over deen, she's a much better unit than him too.

I played Echoes just recently, and I happened to recruit Sonya in my playthrough. I saw all the base and support conversations, but I didn't know that you can attack and kill Jedah, because if you try attacking, or read his skill descriptions, it says he repels all attacks. Then I just evaded him in the two stages he appears, and never saw this interaction of her. I just happened to understand what became of her sisters because I entered their ranges in the final stage, thus seeing what they had to say. But this talk of revenge was completely lost on me. Sonya then just looked like a tragic character, tagging along for the ride. Maybe a flaw in the game, but I still enjoyed Echoes very much, for all it brings to the franchise.

While I see where you derive your interpretation of Sonya's ending, I had (and still do) view it as her giving into despair/depression.
it's left pretty vague as echoes is concerned, but it's hard for her to become a true witch when duma is dead.
Lacking doalogue with Jedah probably wasn't an oversight...I wouldn't say it's intentional either though. Shadows of Valentia just didn't try very hard when it came to boss dialogue. If anything it's surprising she got that one conversation with Jedah in the swamp given the rest of the games track record.

I my last playthrough of FE: Echoes, Hestia DOES directly bring up Sonya, saying something along the lines of "Why should you get to live freely?" Though, what was kind of strange to me, is that she didn't actually say this to Sonya in my playthrough. I had Palla engage her in battle.

However, I see this in different ways:
1-By saying ''witch'' it means ''female mage'' which is not how it's seen often in Fire Emblem, so this is not really relevant. If it is, however, Sonya can still be that ''witch''.
2-That witch is just a random witch that ''survived'' during the war. Very unlikely, though.
3-Sonya somehow transformed into a witch searching for a cure for witchness, like you said.
The thing that is very confusing is the fact that Sonya left Valentia. If in some point of her trip, she was turned into a witch, why would she return to Valentia? This is why I think that witch is not Sonya, plus the Duma thing.

I clicked on the video because I love mages. I didn't know what to expect from Sonya. What I liked about the video was how you broke down the character and didn't make it dreadful. Some people are better at giving information than others. As for Sonya specificly I found it was interesting in how she decided to handle the stress and what she'd do for the next (?) generation.

Out of ALL the revenge references you could have made, you didn't even TRY to make a joke about Sasuke, who was the guy out for revenge, while Naruto was the power of friendship user? Such a missed opportunity. XD
But I genuinely did enjoy this character analysis. Really gave me an insight about Sonya and makes me see her in a new light that I cannot help but admire. Reminds me of Ghast's Support Science. And the way you explained about the last chapter and how she doesn't even try to converse with Jedah or her sisters to be a sign that she's completely let go of her vengeance and just pities them was actually very impressive, as I would never have made that kind of assessment.

Great video on Sonya. She maybe a crappy unit due to her growth stats but she is a interesting character. She may have show pity to her idiot of a father Jedah in her final battle quote but I, and the rest of us fire emblem fans(including the ones who like Jedah) DO NOT and he finally get whats comming to him after the evil things he has done(including selling Celica's soul to Duma and using her to fight and/or kill Alm) thanks to his blind faith in Duma.
Sonya already has that "ideal body type", but her heroes art makes me want to gag. Her waist is begging to snap....
