    B.C. doesn't stand for before Christ. That's such a dumb, self important and ignorant thing to say. First Jesus was real. And second it means before the common era. Just like we are in 2024 C.E. The Common Era.... Yikes..

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The years before Christ are absolutely labeled B.C. And that’s why we count down to A.D. Anno Domini, so we are now in A.D. 2024, The Year of Our Lord! That Common Era stuff is just a way to erase the influence of Christianity without having to change the actual calendar system.

    Bonk is called BC Kid in Europe after Hudson ran a competition in several magazines to rename the character (they couldn't call him Bonk here as that's slang for sex) and as the game was called PC Kid in all import gaming shops and magazines, a pun on that won the competition. But he was called Bonk in the virtual console releases.
    Oh, the PAL TurboGrafx never had a single game released for it officially, it was just compatible with US titles.

      @GTV-Japan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Larry! Yea a few brits have filled me in on the slang! A Frenchman told me if the huge import scene the PCE had there which also filled in a few gaps. It makes sense he’d be called PC kid as PC is the only thing not Japanese on the box. But I went with my own rule if I don’t know enough about a certain point don’t pretend like I do! 🍖

      @@GTV-Japan Oh yeah, PC Engine importing was massive in the UK too. NEC were so confident about giving the system a full release here that they took out ads telling people not to buy "grey imports" as they called them, as they wouldn't be covvered in their warranty, and the usual scaremongering stuff of it'll damage your TV Etc.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See that’s what I don’t learn living out here in the Far East! You always read that things were imported but have no concept of what it really means. Is it 50 units or 500000? That’s never what’s reported

    • @Larry
      @Larry 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GTV-Japan I don't think there was any mass shipments, mostly it was indie stores with a contact in Japan/America that would ship over a few copies they had bought in a store.
      But importing was big here as it'd take a good six months for a game to arrive here, if ever, we never recieved a ton of big SNES titles. until just a few years ago on Virtual Console.

      Great way to start the day, with a small lesson on binomial nomenclature to boot lol. To think my name is in your video and I didn't have to give you a pound of flesh thru patreon? How do you do It? I'm curious about anything PC Engine, it's the system I know least about. I love how the colors are so vibrant and just seem to pop out at you. I was always so envious of that being a Genesis fan and all.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And you were the top commenter!! I don’t know how I did it without demanding 1800$ for each bimonthly video haha. The pce was able to pull off those colors due to the hardware being able to hold 256 (or so) colors on one background plane and a different set on another so you get 512 or something like that in a lot of cases. I always felt the Genesis weak spot was lack of on screen colors. They say 80 which isn’t much more than the master system. But they made it work. Thanks for watching my friend 🍖

    Just a couple quick notes tied to the Air Zonk naming contest. The prize was a US Turbo Duo and a package of games, and I believe the winner got those before the official launch. Also the early trade show builds were calling it "Bonkinator"

They were always well made, fun platformers, but got completely overshadowed by Sonic and Mario simply due to the fact that the Turbo wasn't as popular over here. Awesome video as always but ERRATUM:
    A classic mistake made by the anglo-saxon world about the history of the PC Engine in Europe.
    The PC Engine was OFFICIALLY released and imported in France by a company named SODIPENG (a sister company of Ubisoft): from 1989 to 1993.
    The PC Engine was big in France and relative to the population it sold better than in the US: 500 000 units sold in France from 1989 to 1993.
    PC Genjin has been renamed in France PC Kid (hence the latter BC Kid on the Amiga).
    You can google “ Sodipeng pub” and you will find lots of adds when the PC Engine was officially sold in France. I bought mine in 1990 in a supermarket named Auchan for instance: just to show that it was widely available. The most widely sold versions was the Coregrafx: that is actually why Konami has chosen to release the Coregrafx Mini in Europe.
    Cheers!

    Souldin here, and funny enough, I was just about to watch and comment on a different video of yours when this popped up, an given you mentioned it to me in our last conversation, I feel I should check it out.
    0:43 - Well I definitely had never heard of the Yo Noid case but the others I was aware of. The first two that come to mind for me are Panel De Pon becoming Tetris Attack and Magical Hat no Buttobi Tābo! Daibōken becoming Decap Attack. I shall have to see about checking some of these other videos of yours sometime... I guess I should subscribe to make that easier to keep track of.
    2:11 - Strange to think of a mascot character who was named after the very system he was the mascot of would have so many releases on other systems... and not even just after his original system was discontinued, but during it's lifetime. Fascinating lesson on scientific names there and Bonk's original name of PC Genjin was truly genius.
    5:17 - Just got to say, whilst all the games looks nice, I find the entry to have particularly beautiful graphics! Their is just something so charming about the series overall art style.
    5:52 - A shame that; always been curious about trying a Turbo Grafx and games like Bonk's look a ton of fun, but I've never seen one in the UK. The Core Grafx Mini from Konami naturally had me excited, but from what I've heard, it's an Amazon exclusive.
    13:07 - The styling of your video is just terrific. I love the play on Japanese sponsors and the shout-out to top commenters is not something I've seen many TH-camr's do and even that is styled with a nice video game theme of top scores. Seeing a bunch of Japanese Bonk adverts is also really neat.
    16:25 - To be fair, they did have plans for Bonk's Adventure 64 (because much like Super, it felt like everything needed a 64 slapped onto it for an N64 release; interesting trivia about how many SNES games had the word super in it) or Ultra Genjin but it was cancelled and the work done on it was later used to create Bomberman Hero... which kind of brings you back to that earlier point about characters replacing other characters in games. Oh, an then you bring it up at 18:04... although I've heard from another source that it was Bomberman Hero that Bonk 64 became, not Bomberman 64.
    Fantastic video and I had a fun time watching this; it was chock-a-block full with charm and personality!

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks! I love long comment! About the regional changes the original script was much longer and I listed like 30 games just to be funny but I cut it down because I don’t think anyone else gets that kind of humor where something is beat to death and doesn’t end makes it funny. I don’t think PC genjin was necessarily the face of the machine. Takahashi Meijin did a lot of promotion but since Hudson was the software side why not make money where ya can?? I don’t understand the marketing strategy behind the pce mini! But amazon ships anywhere and it will likely have resellers anyway. I decided to add top commenters because so many channels mention patreon paid members but I though this would be a more fun thing to do and my style is affected by the fact that I only watch Japanese tv and have for 15 years! If I got the wrong bomberman sorry. I’m not well versed in the N64 and since everything is 64 I guess I just slipped up. Keep in mind I’m doing these while on break at work! I’m glad you liked it. Bonk is one of my favorites and I only bother with the games I truly love so that it will show in the work. What video were you going to see instead? Thanks for watching on day one! Always means a lot! 🍖

    • @grinbrothers
      @grinbrothers 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you do; it's almost exclusively what I do when commenting.
      I see your point about cutting down the regional changes section; surprising just how many examples can be found of whole characters being swapped out for another. It's also interesting when those sort of things happened during development, like in the case with Bonk 64 to Bomberman Heroes.
      I'm not sure if PC Genjin/Bonk was ever officially the mascot, but I've often read things (older game magazines, comments on forums, etc) back in the day regarding the PC Engine/TurboGrafx referring to him as such... kind of like Gex with the 3D0 or Crash with the PlayStation (I believe Crash was never official the PlayStation mascot; he was just perceived to be).
      If I see the Core Grafx Mini in my Game Store, I shall be sure to get it; there's a lot of games I've never tried out before on it so it'll be a worthwhile purchase.
      As for the video I was about to watch of yours, it was the Justin Bailey Samus one. I needed a shorter video to watch and I've always loved the green haired Samus design; I shall see about watching it over the weekend. I've also got the Goemon video of yours added to my Watch Later to, well, watch later. Thank you for the reply!

    Well I was certainly aware of Bonk and PC Genjin. Had no idea about all the powerup puns and BC Kid. Or King Balls for that matter.
    It does seem like nearly all Super nintendo games were called Super ______, but it's probably just confirmation bias and sticks in your mind more each time you hear another game with Super in front of it. Like 64 for the N64, or DS for the DS, although there were plenty of more subtle DS-DS games where they just had the initials of the subtitle be DS, like Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Lunar: Dragon Song and so on.
    Man mini consoles just keep rolling out. I see the Turbografx 16 mini contains all the games from all the regions. That's pretty cool of them. Maybe I'll get it to pile on the unending pile of games to play since I've never played any Turbografx games, I have played through the NES Bonk's Adventure though

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I hear ya on the Snes games. But there were ones like Super Castlevania 4 or Super Tennis that had no need for the super. While some like Super Mario World had to be there. Someone from France told me they chose BC kid to match pc because the grey market pc engine game was called pc kid unofficially there. I got all 3 minis coming on the morning of March 19! March 18 at dinner time for the USA so I’ll get to be first!! If they don’t give out test units. Thanks for coming by and catching up 🍖

    Great video! Although I had a Genesis very early and a SNES a few years after, I was always curious about TG and Bonk. I eventually got one (in 1995..it was already dead) at a sleazy flea marketish store that had many games. I got a crummy partially melted (?) system and picked up both Bonks and a few other games..10 bucks each. It was a gift from my folks for high school graduation. I eventually picked up a PC Engine Duo maybe 10ish years later? Long story shorter, I eventually got Bonk 3 CD and the card PC Engine version as well..as well as the 2 SNES games (games only..picked up SB manual later), the CD denjins, the 2 gb games, the 3 in 1 gb collection, and the ps2 Bonk remake. A friend sent me a Bonk Brink of Extinction shirt way too small for me. Lastly, I just scored a rare PC genjn plush in great shape for a GREAT amount of money. So yeah, big Bonk fan!

    Wow, I learned so much from this video - and I thought I knew a lot about PC Genjin!
    There's something PC Engine related that's literally puzzled me for 30 years and I've never been able to get a meaningful explanation, but you might know the answer: why on earth did NEC/Hudson call it CD-ROM² or CD-ROM-ROM? Even though the PC Engine CD-ROM was (to my knowledge) the very first commercially available CD-ROM device in the world, it nevertheless still used regular CD's. was it just a quirky marketing gimmick, or was there more to it than that?

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I can tell you. Actually I just found a book that explains all that stuff and the first video of 2020 I’ll cover it. But simply it’s a CD rom-rom because the machine is a CD rom and the disc is a rom! I know that’s weird to us. But it also makes it copyrightable too. Very often in Japanese the number 2 means to say something twice and appears frequently. Also HE means home entertainment and was used to separate the pc engine and pc9800 lines

    • @kodoyama
      @kodoyama 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazing, thanks for that! The PC Engine is by far my favourite console ever. It’s the machine that introduced me to import gaming back in the late 80’s and sparked a life long love of Japan. It’s an endlessly fascinating family of consoles and I’m always uncovering new gems of information, just when I think I’ve learned all there is to know. This was yet another fun video! Always enjoy learning more about PC Engine stuff. I was actually kinda surprised to learn that Bonk's names for other systems weren't just things made up on the fly, but rather retooled in a way to make *Some* sort of sense, in relation to his OG name of PC Genjn. I'm also kinda surprised that in motion, that GCN Bonk remake is a lot cooler looking that it looks like in pictures. I always thought it looked pretty poor, but in motion it looks like a faithful recreation of the PCE Game with pretty backgrounds and smart celshading! It looks way better than Brink of Extinction, which just looks really meh, like Adventure Island the Beginning.
    I'd like to know what the origin of the Master Takahashi series was like, or even more interesting, why on earth New Adventure Island is the ONLY game on the PCE mini to not retain the original artwork, instead sticking with some generic logo and a background out of photoshop. I bet there's some sort of history with that series' artist or something along those lines... Or just them not having any scans available.
    BTW, did you know that for some odd reason, the real Johnny Turbo has a prototype of Bonk RPG? he showed a pic of the board this summer and boasted about wanting to release it but nothing happened. I alerted some preservationists and they got in contact with him, but Turbo isn't budging... I at least hope it's backed up. Would love to try out a new PCE game.

    Man...what a show! One question, where did you learn to speak Japanese? I ask this for several reasons. First and foremost, I'm a fellow linguist. I speak fluent English (duh), lo parlo Italiano (Italian), yo hablo Espanol (Spanish), and Latine loqor, luqoi (Latin) although my grammar/spelling is atrocious in Latin. Further, I have traveled all over the world. The only place have always wanted to gu but never had the chance is Japan.
    I want to not only learn the language but how to read and write it as well. I have so many games that are essentially locked out too me as I don't understand the language. Now, Japanese written in our Roman simplified letters or essentially in English lettering I can generally follow. The characters themselves at current might as well be ancient hieroglyphics as I can't read them.

    Had no idea Bonk got released on the Amiga. That's an interesting bit of info, thanks. To be honest though with the mini that was released I never understood why it came with the games in Japanese and English as there was overlap. It wasn't really the 50 games they promised and the Japanese ones were never localised so some must be difficult to play. I personally would have kept the Japanese exclusives and at least cut the overlapped games.

      No. It’s hard to convey with the gameboy limitations but Japanese third bonk is designed to look like a traditional 16-19th century bandit. They often wore dark face coverings to hide their identity. The style is also done with Ebisu Maru from goemon

      There are many cultural shorthand’s like that which we are possibly unaware of that in Japan need no explanation.. I also like how the western theif bonk apparently was caught for his crime and carries a ball and chain

    This was a brilliant video, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I had a PC Engine for my 10th Birthday in 1990! Over here in the UK the PC Engine kickstarted the grey import market for Japanese consoles. When CVG Magazine reviewed PC Genjin they called him PC Kid and the name stuck for future releases . Hence when he was later released on the Amiga in the UK he was called BC Kid.
