Had a week's holiday staying in Narborough station back in 1988, when it was owned by a gentleman in London who let it out (after "approving" the takers!). The station master's house constituted a separate let at that time. Much more of the station and platforms was visible at that time from the road crossing than it looks like in your current photo. The last crossing keeper, a lady, still lived in the cottage next door, and she was the key-holder of the station let, so we had some chats with her about her times doing that job. Apparently, a BBC2 documentary had been made about the line shortly before closure, and she had been in it. All my efforts to try locating a copy of this film came to nothing. The station was in perfect condition, and still had the notice of closure in its original frame on the waiting room wall. Great memories, and a nice video, thank you!
One hot sunday morning in July 1995, I walked from Kings Lynn to Middleton taking as many photos as I could, I once visited a lady who was living at a rented room at Narborough Station too
The old maps give a very clear indication of why many country stations and railway lines lost out to local buses and then the motor car. Something that the Beeching was Illegitimate Brigade tend to forget.
Who knows if the Lynn and Dereham railway will be resurrected in some form. I am starting by fixing up Middleton Towers, who knows where we’ll go from there
I lived in Great Dunham in 1968 and biked to the station at Little Dunham and watched the line being ripped up. The biggest act of vandalism in this country since WW2. Funny how the man who orchestrated the closure of rural railways family made their fortune from Tarmac!
It never happened and probably never will, but a decent East to West railway across Norfolk would have done wonders for the region. It was possible to get from Lynn to Norwich only via the tortuous routes shown- even worse today with a change at Ely. The A47 road is awful, and going West from Lynn, neither the A47 nor A17 are fit for purpose. Edit- P.S. I live near an abandoned Norfolk railway (which will remain abandoned because the supporters of its rebuilding couldn't produce a sensible engineering and business plan if it bit them on the backside).
I agree mate my local Line would of been the Hunstanton branch and I’ll be honest I believe this line to Norwich would of been the better one to if kept running
"Sporle station would *have* been situated somewhere along this part of the track bed." If you're going to use titles, please ensure they are grammatically correct. "have" and "of" do not mean the same thing. Not even remotely similar.

What a brilliant video. The combination of then and now photos maps and satellite images is superb.
Thanks so much
I'm very impressed how you have blended the old maps into the satellite images. Great job!
Thanks ever so much
Fantastic video, always been interested in this line having grown up near Middleton Towers
Cheers mate
Thanks for a very interesting and informative slice of history, well put together 😊
Thanks for this! Brings back memories having grown up in Wymondhan about 70 years ago!

Do do you have any photos of Middleton station?
The reason I ask a good friend of mine is looking at restoring the station and any old photos will be of great help from any era

I can agree with that if I was to walk to the station in my village I would have to walk past three bus stops to get to the railway station
Closing rail lines was progress! I understand the French don't allow building on defunct lines. A shame we didn't have the same rule years ago.
@@mosvids4152 criminal mate so much has been constructed over are closed lines.
Great video

Great vid, can you make wording a bit smaller? 🤪
You think the wording is to big I did think the same but did not want to small for people with poor sight
@@norfolksdisusedrailways4353 no i meant it was too small lol, i could hardly see it!

Or don’t watch again or subscribe easy really saves wasting time with a comment
Very interesting and well illustrated history of this old line, only marred by the poor english in the subtitles.
Sorry you felt the subtitles were poor
