I lived in Great Dunham in 1968 and biked to the station at Little Dunham and watched the line being ripped up. The biggest act of vandalism in this country since WW2. Funny how the man who orchestrated the closure of rural railways family made their fortune from Tarmac!

As a three or four year old, on a holiday trip to Hunstanton I don’t think we actually got to the beach. We had to cross the bridge to get from where the car was parked , and little me insisted we stayed on the bridge to watch the trains. Wish I could do that today.

It never happened and probably never will, but a decent East to West railway across Norfolk would have done wonders for the region. It was possible to get from Lynn to Norwich only via the tortuous routes shown- even worse today with a change at Ely. The A47 road is awful, and going West from Lynn, neither the A47 nor A17 are fit for purpose. Edit- P.S. I live near an abandoned Norfolk railway (which will remain abandoned because the supporters of its rebuilding couldn't produce a sensible engineering and business plan if it bit them on the backside).

Had a week's holiday staying in Narborough station back in 1988, when it was owned by a gentleman in London who let it out (after "approving" the takers!). The station master's house constituted a separate let at that time. Much more of the station and platforms was visible at that time from the road crossing than it looks like in your current photo. The last crossing keeper, a lady, still lived in the cottage next door, and she was the key-holder of the station let, so we had some chats with her about her times doing that job. Apparently, a BBC2 documentary had been made about the line shortly before closure, and she had been in it. All my efforts to try locating a copy of this film came to nothing. The station was in perfect condition, and still had the notice of closure in its original frame on the waiting room wall. Great memories, and a nice video, thank you!

Yet another disaster of Beaching removal of railways, o’h yes we would have a bus replacement service. Well we all know how long that lasted. Where’s the bus service between Watton and Thetford or Dereham. That railway service diapered like so many others.

The old maps give a very clear indication of why many country stations and railway lines lost out to local buses and then the motor car. Something that the Beeching was Illegitimate Brigade tend to forget.
