    This is a great piece of gear to have onboard if only for the purpose of diving on your anchor to check it our to free it if it gets fouled underwater.
    They also have a small compressor you can buy if you dont have scuba tanks to fill it from as I do.

    They probably don't supply the fitting to fill from a scuba tank, because small high preasure compressors already support the Foster quick-connect fitting. You can get a compressor for $200-$1000 depending on features and how fast you want to fill up the tank. The one I got was a little over $200 and runs off 120v or 12v. Also, a lot of the different brands of tanks like that often come with that scuba fitting.

    Yes I have a 2l bottle and your right the scuba shops don’t like filling them without vip but you can use your tanks as your did , one thing I noticed using mine is that you need to make sure your filler tank is holding 3000 psi otherwise the most the pony tank gets filled is around 2500 psi , also 30 ft is like operational tops, I never take mine down more than 20-25 ft and your right about the bends but it isn’t the bends you worry about here with this unit it’s air embolism so never ascend faster than your bubbles , first rule out of sea hunt ! Anyway good luck the mini scuba tank provides a lot of fun but do get certified , as your suggest , otherwise you could get in trouble 👿 nice video !

    4:15. Just want to clarify something I think you know but didn't say.
    You say you'll fill it from the scuba tank left over, if you do it will have a lower pressure let's say you end a dive at 50 bar. For a standard 10 litre tank at 50 bar, as the air is shared over 12 Litres when filling the small tank the final pressure will end up at 41.6 bar.

    I saw they have a kit that comes with a small compressor, could you then refill the tank with the compressor? This could be the perfect gift for anyone that for one reason or another don't have a full setup always with them, this is much easier to load in the car for when you go on vacation with the family

    Pretty fast rocket ascent to surface. Hope you don't have a habit of that on your regular scuba dives. A fast ascent like that is more appropriate for freediving, when you only have surface air in your lungs. But putting compressed air in your lungs and ascending that fast is an embolism waiting to happen. Also, the purpose of a VIP (Visual Inspection) is to see if there is any rust inside your tank, cracks, debris, ... All things that are very bad for your and others health. So even if you can get away with not having to inspect it, please still inspect it annually.

    I must be missing something. You already have scuba gear and it looks like you're going through all the same steps you would to suit up for a regular dive. I can see how it would be useful to someone who doesn't have scuba gear and only wants to dive for a quick inspection or maybe to clear a fouled prop.

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a simple grab and go set up, takes seconds to put on. I have a small boat so unless I am going on a dive my gear is stowed and would take 45 minutes to get out and set up, not to mention rinsing, and drying all the gear before restowing it.

    • @brentjacobsen1757
      @brentjacobsen1757 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Pony bottles have been around for years and have been used in rescue work for quite a long time. There are several issues with this setup. First, you are using gear outside normal SCUBA Certification training. You are using a first and second stage that is relatively new on the SCUBA system timeline. Standard SCUBA year has been developed over decades of testing, lawsuits, and improvements. You would be much better off using the first and second stage you trained and use regularly with a pony bottle than a one-off. During an emergency remember your training. In emergency work, pony bottles were used for rapid deployment or confined space. Now with smaller high-capacity tanks available, they have lost much of their appeal. They are still used in confined spaces, but that usually means safety divers. We use to say they give you enough air to get into trouble, but not get out of it. There is something to say about the speed of deployment, but again a pony bottle you are better off using your regulator that you train with. In addition, once you put a wetsuit on and need any weight, you are looking at a BCD. You lose any argument for speed, once you decide to wear a wetsuit. Putting on a wetsuit is the single hardest thing to mitigate when trying to enter the water quickly.

      Yah I have the same concerns over this, rarely are cheats/shortcuts worth it and it's a razors edge. 20 min air time optimal is not much if you get distracted, caught on something, or who knows what. Besides that filling little bottles from big bottles, doesn't seem worth the hassle. Rather just have one bottle onboard and a compressor. Minimalism, own less but very high quality of what you do have.

    Unless you are a certified Diver, no one should be using these. Think it needs to be restated because this could save someone's life! Safe Scuba diving is not as easy as strapping a bottle to your back and just yeeting it into the water and coming up when the tank is empty.

    I was hoping you’d get into diving . Being the salty sea dog you are just like me I failed to inform you that being a diver for 35 years with thousands of hours underwater, I still go through this when going to a dive a dive shop that doesn’t have their stick on the tank. It’s a big joke! I’m a open water diver and have more experience than most instructors. I’ve seen classes for advanced open water and even some specialty certifications that can’t even put their gear together. Most divers I encounter are what I call vacation divers ( diving once a year or once every 2 years ). The more hours you have diving the better diver you become. Safety, constant awareness and respect are the only things that will keep you alive .
