It is possible to recycle more old things for this purpose, without additional electronics and soldering. Just insert the JACK from your old active computer speakers into the front panel and power the drive with an unused ATX power supply from the old computer (it is necessary to interconnect the black and green wires on the largest connector, which was originally in the board).
It's important to remember that this will only for work for WAV files (which store /uncompressed/ audio in LPCM encoding) and similar. Typical problem with computer CD players - especially the older ones, is that their speed can vary by as much as 15%. If you try to rip a CD in a number of different CD players, each will produce a file that has different song lengths. This is due to the variation in CD spin speeds. In addition, the DAC is almost always the cheapest chip on the market at the time of manufacture. Computer CD players are notoriously bad at both playing and ripping CDs for this very reason. A way around this is to do a direct file copy without converting it to any other format or compression. Once it's on the hard drive, then you can manipulate it. But even that is hit and miss for audio CDs. Nearly all computer CD drives will not correct missed or damaged data. They will blindly copy files with flaws and not even tell you about them. I like to use a feeware program called Exact Audio Copy to help correct this. It's not perfect, but will produce much better copies than you would otherwise have.
@@OreoBambino Just try it. Not all computer CD players will rip or play at the same speed. TH-cam videos don't go through the same process and can't be compared, and you're confusing file transfer speed with audio playback speed - two completely different things on a CD player.
@@OreoBambino But you have a point - I didn't explain it properly. It's not the spin speed of the CD that causes the problem - it's the digital timer that varies from device to device. If all you're doing is a file transfer, the digital timer won't change anything. But once you involve a DAC, that timer determines the speed in which the DAC operates,. and thus the speed in which a song is played. But even if you're only converting to an MP3 or AAC (ripping), it will be affected by the speed of the timer.
Of course you can just buy an external power supply that provides both 5V and 12 V and make this far easier..... even comes with a MOLEX connector! Imagine that!
I'm glad I wasn't expecting the unexpected, or something amazing. I would have been sorely disappointed. But hey, nice Walkman. I hope you have big pockets.
Granted, this is an informative video. However, I feel that you went through considerable trouble creating a small power supply and installing an IC audio amplifier within the CD-ROM player. I am certain that you are aware that by simply grounding the power-on wire (green wire) on the computer power supply will provide you with the +5 and +12 volts that is required, unless you were attempting to save space. Connecting the CD-ROM's audio output to any general purpose audio amplifier will do just as well. Again, your video is informative. Keep up the good work.
Yes, I also think you could do that. I think he is demonstrating a more elegant solution that does not require an external amplifier and can use a smaller or more general purpose power supply. It nice to see how it can be done, although I don't think I would bother to do it myself.
To be honest it's just odd, I don't get it, there are many videos like this. Here, just connecting up some $10 speakers to the headphone jack would yield better results all round. Neater, better sound, erm, anyway it's a project for someone if they really feel the need.
Let's say that there are so many obsolete appliances waiting to be scrapped that makes this effort not convenient. A hi-fi CD player was sold for $20 more than a decade ago and then was replaced by new models that read MP3 and DVD. Then there are unused portable Cd players, old portable pc. I am sure everybody has at least one of those that make not interesting using a pc cd-rom drive

any CD-ROM has built in CD Audio player, but the project could be better if you have old Creative CD-ROM which came with IR remote. That CD-ROM is a masterpiece.
No. Having creative CDROM is just having creative CDROM. The project could really be MUCH better if he had normal CDrom with only one EJECT button and he used some Arduino or something similar to emulate ATA bus and send commands from Arduino to CDROM (play/pause/next/previous/etc). This could really be amazing project. What he did is something that any school pupil would easily do even better.

This is cool. We need more cd players with flip phone quality speakers.
Connect this to a decent Klipschorn and you'll get some music out of it.

Why don't you put the power wires through the holes before soldering? That would give you more mechanical connection.
If I remember correctly, some CD drives had a play/pause button rather than play/next.
No. That was play/next mostly. Just believe me :-)

that is a nice CD-ROM! and can you pls tell me where did you get it Bc i want one :)
Is there any circuit to get constant rca jacked output from stereo cassette player that is independant of volume control? If yes than please make one also from where that output to pull out off the circuit for amplification and recording...
Какая классная, нафиг не нужная штука))) 👍👍👍
any CD-ROM has built in CD Audio player, but the project could be better if you have old Creative CD-ROM which came with IR remote.

Neat little project, but as a CD player it would be pretty impractical since it lacks basic functions you would expect from one (track skip in particular)
Pam8403 new to me, nice application
Wonder what DAC chip these Cd ROM drives use for the front headphone and rear analog outputs.
Also, many drives like this have a digital spdif 2pin output next to the 4pin analog output on the back.
Be cool to internally mount a better DAC board plus the pam8403, then use a power bank to power it

Yes, only CDA format can be played. In fact, the CDA extension is listed by the operating system because it is actually a WAV. Convert your MP3 files to WAV (sampling frequency setting is 44.1kHz, 16 bits and uncompressed). This is the CDA, CDDA standard. The drive recognizes it as audio (audio disc).

Cool video, but there is 100 times easier way to make it work, no need any amps inside. Also better to use CD-Rom with additional control buttons (as vintage Creative). With old. creative Cd-rom You can control “play” “stop” “next track”.
