Great info, so do I need to buy a second battery for my van to power my stuff. So in my head I have the van battery under the passenger seat wired over to a second battery, then that battery wired to the inverter.

Diarmuid, A second battery is essential, here why! If you used your vehicle battery and ran the inverter while parked up you run the risk of not being able to start the van. A Second battery with split charge relay will not draw power from the vehicle battery and if the voltage gets too low in your leisure battery, it will shut off therefore protecting your main starting battery.Always use a split charge relay( cheap) or Battery to battery charger(about twice the price but much more efficient and works better with smart alternators).
Link to split charge relay ebay.to/2WEbeNW or Battery to Battery charger ebay.to/2YGXKDR.
      hope this helps-Jamie

Tearing the a---e out of it here!
You motioned - did you do a video ---- clearly you understand electrics so I'd be interested if you did a Battery to battery charger install.

Hey there, your comment is a little confusing. Probably spell checker writing what it feels like. B2B install video never got finished(long story but illnesses and an engine rebuilt )are simple and straightforward) to install, but the key is using a heavy cable from vehicle batter to b2b and from b2b to leisure battery. Ask as many questions as you want. Always happy to help if I can

Very good Jamie! Here in the states, most every long haul trucker, (as i) have an inverter to power our small refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, ect. Gerry sent me over and I'm happy he did.

Micheal, thanks for the positive comment, really appreciate it. Inverters make life so much easier for the thing that just don't work of dc. Fridge and microwave are definitely two items that have to be mains. Stay safe on them roads!!!
