Brush Turkey

  • Brush Turkeys are very common on the Bunya Mountains, almost to the point of being a nuisance. Brush Turkeys rarely fly, tending to walk or run everywhere. They are not easily frightened, and will attack anything that threatens it's mound.
Filmed by Glen THRELFO and Neil BROMHALL for the BBC "The Natural World" Program.

Beautiful documentary. I learnt a lot. Even though I have had a male's nest near our bedroom window. One which I could watch through trees - I never saw the birds mating and I never realised the female laid another's male eggs (how good is he to look after them with such care). Thank you for giving me even more respect for these amazing birds and how lucky am I to have them in my garden!

Brush Turkey: Yep, that's one fine looking mound of leaves I made.
Brush Turkey Chick: I have hatched Father!
Brush Turkey: Get out of my house, I never want to see you again!
    The End

Was camping in a cabin once and accidentally left the door open after making piikelet mix.
Damn brush turkey wondered in and managed to displace a near 2kg bag of flour over the entire cabin, knock a full slab of beer from the table busting several bottles and then abruptly run off while unrolling a near entire bog roll it had stuck to it's foot.

Just the other day on Lane Cove National Park, I did film a Sydney Water Dragon invading a Brush Turkey's nest. Even that lizard was sitting on top of this mound.
All I ever did was let the dramas alone and just let nature decide since I had an opportunity to scare of that lizard since now I am in an impression that the lizard would had ate the Turkey's eggs.
I didn't know this up until I saw what the Goanna was doing.

Thanks for the upload. This video makes me think of quite a few things. First of all, it is called a 'brush turkey' and not a 'bush turkey' so the documentary is not wrong.
Second of all, from wat i know, the brush turkey male leaves the newly hatched young alone as soon as they hatch.. hence, i don't think it's that much of a disadvantage for the young bird to walk without the father.
Also, when seeing the lizard it really makes me understand the story in the bible which says the snake was turned into a creature that moved on it's belly (rather than on four legs).. the lizard looks like a snake.. remove the legs, it's practically like a snake. I am not a christian btw. i just thot it's interesting.

I have one female that's been in my area for 6 years and is that tame, she'll come in the door and eat bread/meat out of my hands without taking it off me. And one male that's been there for 4 years is almost the same, but he jumps on the outside table and pecks the window to let us know he's outside hanging for a feed and his my profile pic. (I took it when he was outside looking in the window, he didn't even mind me taking a pic haha. I think he posed for it.) But i have our native grey miners (nosy miners around 100 a day), grey butcher birds (1 mother who is my best mate in animal friendship terms. And 2 males + 1 female who is 6 months old), bush chooks of course (i counted 12 and 2 males), rainbow lorries( 2 who own the place) and kookaburras (3 + 2 babies). all known me for years and think im their local food shop hehe and it's a big yard so they enjoy it. Pfft last bit of home left after the 2016 storms and debbie last year but that's nature aye.
Australian flora and fauna, beautiful then anywhere else and just diverse.
