- Ultraviolet Hippopotamus play their song "Tugboat" at the Second Story Garage in the Boulder Daily Camera home studio.
Ultraviolet Hippopotamus came into the Garage all the way from Grand Rapids, Mich., to jam with us before a string of tour dates in Colorado.
Maybe we should use the term “jam” more carefully. Though UV Hippo’s blend of rock, funk and even a little bit of psych and classical music has that jam-band sound, the quintet’s music is carefully composed. They keep the improvising under control (but when they do it, they do it well).
On the Colorado leg of the tour, UV Hippo will be the last band to play Quixotes True Blue in Denver on Nov. 10, then they’ll play the Southern Sun in Boulder on Nov. 12.
What they brought us: A creepy signed poster. We’re pretty sure the devil’s face is on it.

I accidently came across these guys when some friends treated me to the Deep Roots Mountain Festival in WV. We went the day JJ Grey & Mofro were playing mainly to see them but I'll give a listen to anyone with some skills who enjoys what they do.After JJ closed the big stage I figured that that was going to be it for the night. There were a few country & bluegrass bands winding down on the smaller stages. I had just polished off the Mezcal & eaten the worm. Right as I was going to go horizontal I heard a band starting up on the closest small stage. My synapses snapped & my brain came back on line... they were playing what I would call progressive or fusion rock?! Already long story shorter I boogied on over to the stage. It was UVH. They had skills. They were playing some amazing and intricate stuff. They appeared to be having a great time and the audience definitely was. Man, they were tight. I was hearing (older) Yes, Zappa,Phish and even a touch of Bill Bruford (Feels Good To Me)... right up my alley. Any who, two big thumbs up, five stars & Bic lighter encore requests all around. Love to see 'em again.... How about a pilgrimage to Cleveland guys?!

I went to see these guys play at the Beachland Tavern on what I think was a Wednesday in 2012 or 2013, based on their name alone. I go to a lot of concerts and this weeknight in the Tavern (I had to work in the morning so I didn't even get to party hard) has always stood out to me as one of the most fun shows I've ever had the pleasure to witness.
Mungion plays the Tavern tomorrow and Dopapod is in the main room next Friday - you coming out for either?
