Perfunctory, efficient, and thorough (once they finally managed to _catch_ the little spitfire! 😂). That one's going to be a real handful once he's bigger~
He did what was needed for a healthy foal - look them over quickly, give 'em back to Mama before things go south with the mare. Surprised they waited a week for a vet check. We always did ours ASAP after the foal was born. The mare got checked, the placenta is checked, the foal is checked, tetanus antitoxin and a SNAP IgG test.
No t elling how long the actual physical was, but what was depicted in the edit was way too short for me. No gait check, no vision check, no belly sounds, no hoof/foot check, no blood sample, no umbilicus check, etc.
Dr. Pol's super quick physical was just that, too quick. It looked fake, like he wasn't even a real vet. Plus he needs to wash that Jeep. He is meant to be a Medical Professional, where Hygiene and cleanliness are kind of important, and that Jeep looks like it hasn't been washed in months and months. It also makes me think the interior is filthy where he will keep some of his equipment. All he needs to do is run it through the car wash when he gets Gas, it takes 3 mins.
Honestly it's perfectly acceptable to start halter training a foal at that age.. they probably did take the halter off after the visit. By the look of their chestnut they don't leave halters on to much. So strong chance they took it off after they were done
They got them new ones for the show 😂 we all know he has a tack room full of old dull dirty ones that he will still use and never get rid of until they fall apart. I'm just glad he already put one on the colt so he can get use to it.
@@blueskyrider2053 I always think it's funny to start training a foul at such a young age for me it shows that they can't train it to halter when it's an adult. If you want the baby to come with you bring the mom and the baby will follow. I didn't start officially training my colt until he was 3 and his momma still with him. Of course I was there in his life but I wasn't forcing him to be with me as I see so many people do now these days.
You guys fail to see that the owner probably put the harness on when he knew Dr. Pol was coming so they could have better control of him. He probably took it off later
Andra Karsten you do realize that many horses die each because owners leave halters on them right? They can get caught on fences and it can lead to strangulation or a broken neck.
@@waynelle_b4850 Agreed. Plus, if you lead the mare, baby will follow. Of course, if baby has bonded properly and humans didn't mess with the bonding process.
Getting a foal slip or halter is usually done within 48 hours of birth. Doing it so early allows the foal to get accustomed to having something on his head. Teaching it to lead would usually start at about 6 weeks old when the neck muscles are stronger.
Frances Sweeney I can understand and get behind putting a halter on for short periods of time to get the Foal used to having something on their face. But leaving the halter on all the time can be deadly if they get a hoof caught in it, or get it hooked on a fence.
brokenandcracked exactly. Happened to my foal because someone thought that he need it. The person said „you need to teach them young“ and thought she knows it better. So the hoof got caught in the halter. He nearly died. Never leave Halters on when you leave.
When doc put his nose to the baby's he was exchanging smell with the foal .. teaching him how to say hello the way another horse would to him it's good as well as cute
One of the best horses I ever rode was a Friesan/Thoroughbred cross gelding - he got the best traits of both breeds. The speed, grace and finesse of the thoroughbred and the color, temperament and build of the Friesian.
That foal is GORGEOUS. Good bone, bright eyes, spunky, and cute. Wonder what the owner plans to do with him. With his sire being a Friesian, he'd do very well at dressage.
Imo he's a nice guy but not a good vet. He knows certain things but a good vet he's not. Very old fashioned. And why didn't he say one word about that dangerous stable?
I was hoping that the Frisian cross foal has a frisian name ;) I mean ... they have a vet from the Netherlands .... let him give the foals their names :D
Got to start handling those babies early when they are little.. I have never liked seeing the halters left on any horse 24/7.. Way too dangerous.. Same with collars on outdoor cats..
Having a halter on a foal is okay. Having a NYLON halter on a foal is not okay. Halters need to be able to break if the animal gets itself in trouble, and horses are exceedingly good at doing that. Mama should have a breakaway halter, too.
I agree with the type of halter, but a halter 24/7 in just a week old foal isn't the best. People should at least wait until foals are a year old to have them wear a halter 24/7. Having it on for a short time is fine with a foal that's a few months old is fine too. Although no one needs a halter on all the time, but if they must.... Also sorry for writing a essay :P
watchgoose yeah, considering how clean and not worn the halters are it is most likely that they were just put on for the vet visit. It is a lot easier to hold a horse if they already have a halter on and it is not very considerate towards a vet to not already have the animals caught and prepped for a checkup beforehand.
Foals don’t see to well for while so when touching the face the get more jumpy but he’ll learn:) heck this goal is probably a few year old now and good looking gelding or stallion
People know foals can be trained right? They can be disciplined very well at that age if you start from day 1. Makes the vets jobs and your job much easier. No different than disciplining a young kid.
A well bred lil colt Mumma did well too considering humans were handling her foal some mummas get super foal proud (too protective) of their baby's which is understandable it's instinct However that pig mesh fencing is atrocious for a mumma and baby they'll get tangled right up in it if they spook and bolt
Lots of electrical outlets and cords in the stall where the horses can reach them. I thought the super fast exam might be due to electrical shock. Great stable management. And do we need a quarter-Friesian cross? Poor husbandry and stewardship.
The purpose of a cross is to create offspring with characteristics derived from both breeds. The purpose of an Andalusian/Friesian is to create offspring with more substance and a lower headset. In this example, both parents have a similar build and so the foal with not change dramatically. The Frisian and the QH don't have similar builds so this wouldn't be a good cross.
I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing that. That stable gave me the creeps and as usual dr. Pol said NOTHING about that. If I would do that my vet would tell me to change that immediately. The colt can so easily break its leg in there.
that stall doesn't look to be lived in. it's probably a temporary holding stall for veterinary checks. you even saw them being led around, most likely to and from the stall they were in.
+Saartje05 aye, but to call it poor husbandry and stewardship for a simple 10 minutes is just over the top. i would take the risk to ensure my foal is well, thank you.
Pegasister054 No hate, I agree that you shouldn't leave any halter on a horse 24/7. But rope halters aren't any safer than a web halter. In fact a rope halter, if caught on something, will not break and can severely damage a horse. So they can actually be more dangerous. A web halter can have a leather tab that will break if the horse gets caught up, and because they are wider they are softer for a foal than a thin rope. To know what I mean: place your hand flat on your arm and press hard. Now place your finger tip on your arm and apply the same pressure. The smaller (finger / rope) will hurt more than the bigger (hand / web). Rope halters have their place for training, but they are no more safer than a nylon web halter.
A horse shouldn't have anything on when it's alone, it's dangerous for them as it can get caught. The halter could easily strangle the horse, in pasture or in the stall. If that happens, you will responsible for the horrid and terrifying death of your horse.

Nat Geo WILD I love you
Man, that guy got some really nice harnesses for the horse and foal! The purple really matches with the gold parts of it.
It's called a halter or headcollar. It is a pretty colour. Not sure I'd put a nylon headcollar on a foal though.

At 2:15 you can see him hit his head in the frame if the vehicle lmao
he's a big guy . I'm sure he's hit his head a few times.
DJ is adorable! I love how he’s only a week old and he’s already defying authority (Doctor Pol.) Lol
Quarter horse AND friesian?! Talk about a dream mix.

I love the matching halters 😍😍

Apparently we have quite a few “horse experts” in the comments.
It's so embarrassing tbh.
There are "horse experts" in the comments of every horse video

Don't need to be a horse expert to know not to put a halter on a baby horse.

+brokenandcracked I agree, it also gets in the way of bonding.
I wait two weeks before I put a halter on a foal. CERTAINLY not within 48 hours. And the foal gets accustomed after that too. Never had a problem.
Frances Sweeney or you can train a horse properly.
brokenandcracked exactly. Happened to my foal because someone thought that he need it. The person said „you need to teach them young“ and thought she knows it better. So the hoof got caught in the halter. He nearly died. Never leave Halters on when you leave.

You can just SEE the gears turning behind that colt's eyes. heaven help the world if he gets his hooves on an opposable thumb!
sharing breathe with the baby, now that is a vet with horse expertise.

Thoroughbreds don´t have true grace, Friesians are those with grace, when they move they dance.
The mom is drop dead gorgeous

He had a knee replacement. I’m not sure if this was filmed before or after it.
