I just came across this video. 9 months too late! I've been using the VSX Headphones for 2 years with ZERO regrets. They've turned my entire career around - I've got mixes I'm happy with and most importantly new aspirations - because I can hear where I want to be and it's pushing me to get better all the time instead of just trying to get an 'adequate' mix. If this microphone idea really works then this is a game changer. I'm sure people are wary of the VSX idea.. I actually did the same thing, traded the same mic, figured I've been using plugin emulations for years, basically went full digital. I do notice some more sibilance and slightly lower quality from the slate when the capsule is pushed, but I think I still make that trade off everyday just based on the options with it, I found the AKG has better off axis sound. I traded my AKG for a American Strat, so still have a good mic and now a guitar. Win.

Hi Warren. It sure makes gear reviews a lot more fun and interesting to see you guys track a full song and get the raw tracks. You guys sound great! I did a MIX of your tracks, it is posted in my video area. Thanks for everything.
I have a pair of the silver models that I bought on a black friday deal in 2018. They mostly stay up as overheads and I use the Blackbird 47 and 67 models. The latter has a nice place for a snare without overdoing the cymbals. I think the mic sounds good without the models so at the very least it's always usable. I think the C12 and 251 have a pretty nice top for vocals and acoustic guitar. I frequently do the XY configuration for a "C24" when doing solo acoustic guitar. I also use it with mandolin and it gets a really nice full, bell-like tone. The models also work well with a SM7 in certain cases. It obviously doesn't sound like the models but the eq grooms the SM7 pretty interestingly. I've never used it on electric guitar. The 67 might be worth a try on electric.
I grabbed one last year when they were on sale for $600. I've always hated my voice. Never liked the way it sounded. I just thought that is the way it is. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a great voice, but this mic showed me how important it is to have the right mic for the source. I was able to pick a mic model that took away all the stuff I hated that I struggled with trying to remove with eq.
Damn. Here I was, mixing the multitracks, thinking mine sounded pretty good. Then I went back and listened to yours, and that kick is making my ear drums flap in the wind. I can't figure it out!
Love my ML-1 and it's my main mic now (I also have an ML-2). I closely compared it to my only other LDC, an AKG C414 B-ULS (which is only used if I need other polar patterns). I could hear an added sweetness with an even more enhanced top end with my fav Slate models which I liked more. The C800-M & C12 are my most used models for my kind of vocals where I'm looking for clarity without harshness, especially for falsetto or mix. I want the models to be as close to the originals as possible because I want to learn the flavour that each mic can bring but the absolute most important fact is that the sound quality is very good and I think there is something the modelling of subtle tube compression and saturation adds that sounds better than the other mics I have. Not everyone can go and shoot out 20 mics at Vintage King like Warren has done! For good or bad, I have changed the mic model on numerous mixes right near the end of mixing to find the best sound. Maybe for the most experienced engineers with the recording budget to match, this isn't an advantage.
Amazing version! I like it better than the original. Where can we stream it!? I love my ML1v (vintage edition), which I bought about 4.5 years ago after seeing one of your videos shooting out with genuine mics (I think at sweet water)& my 2 ML2s aren’t too bad.
I have the Slate mics & software works very well - can't afford the real thing (super high end mics) so this is a great alternative - love the technology we have now - the TH-U guitar amp software is also amazing
I heard the first progression and im like this sounds like bryan adams😂 nice work. I love the ML1. I use it with the 1073 emulation in vmr with cla vox. Gives me a great chain. I like tracking through it. I don’t know if the emulations are working while tracking but the mic itself sounds great😎
O use that mic almost everyday! Love it. My plan is to very soon get one more ML1 and a bunch of ML2s to record a whole band. There's a video from Glen where he miced a drum kit and the emulations even emulate the different spills on different models...
My dream mic changes with my own moods. I have ML1 of course, but then I have Nude C12, Blue Bottle and Baby bottle's too, SE Titan, NUDE Blumlein Ribbon and some other mics which I like. You cannot say that one mic is better than the other, if you have many choices to pick one. You choose per case what you believe is best for that particular project.
Run the Slate microphone through The Golden Age Pre 73 MKIII and crank The gain to about 50-55 and reduce the output the coloration is fantastic, and i bet it sounds amazing.
I had the ML-1 for a few years now. The 251 emulation alone is worth the cost of entry. Helps with a quick workflow, and also not mentioned here.. A lot of the Slate stuff has near zero latency with their plugins. So you can track live with all this on. And when I say all this on ... I mean everything in the VMR plugin (eq's comps, gates, etc) all live to a cue mix for the artist to hear their vocal in all its glory. no uad card, or hdx system needed.
I have an ML1-V which is the same mic in a U47 shape body. I love it, my go to mic for vocal recording. One important thing what you care, don't push it harder than -10dBFs because you overload the software so use the Trimmer before the mic simulation in VMR.
Can I ask is that the problem I’m having when I go to record my vocal the microphone is really quiet, even when I turn the game up really high on my interface And then it sounds pretty bad
Great review, would love your review of the Acustica Audio Lava microphone emulation software just released and see how it compares to the ML1... Yes, those Jones Scanlon Reds are amazing, have the exact same ones and love them, hope you're enjoying yours too Warren 🙂
This sounds great but I’ve heard this mic be too sibilant in other videos like Oak Felders video when he plays Demi Lovato recording. Have they updated it?
I recorded this completely flat with no EQ or compression and with a pop screen going into an affordable Audient iD44 interface. Not sure how others have done it?
Owned one and liked it a lot (so much that I bought all the expansions), but once I upgraded to HDX for the Hybrid Engine it became useless because the plugin isn't AAX DSP. Sold it a few months back and got a WA87 and WA8000. At some point I'll check out the Townsend Labs since it supports AAX DSP.
I have a pair I use for drum overheads, and I wish they had a U87 emulation for this but no complaints with what they do have. I also use one of them for vocal overdubs which is great for testing different sounds without needing to set up multiple mics, and I have their preamp for it too so I can also use their preamp emulations. I have used some of the mics they model previously so I have some frame of reference for a few, but the beautiful thing is it doesn't actually matter how accurate it sounds like a U47 or whatever, and regardless of the fact that every U47 will sound a little different, there's so many options you're bound to find a good match for your source just by listening and comparing, and like any other mic you'll learn what each of them do to the sound so you can make informed decisions about how best to use each of them.
Were you using the VMS pres or did you do something else? I run my Slate mics direct into my Clarett with good results. I never felt the need to buy the Slate preamps.
I own an ML-1 and a pair of ML-2's. I recently recorded about 14 songs with a female singer-songwriter named Meredith. I had her sing through the ML-1 and mic'd the guitar with the ML-2's. I've really just started playing around with the sounds available. A little history. For a dozen years prior to '92 I was an engineer at Unique Recording, NYC. We had tons of mics. 47's tube and FET, 87's, 251's, 414's and on and on. Tons of everything actually. Racks of Neve pre's and EQ. Heck, a Neve console! Standard Practice was to throw up a bunch of mics, have the singer sing and pick one, maybe two, to print to tape, usually for the entire album. And that was that, FOREVER. Even if you did a shoot out for each song, you were stuck with your selection. 40 years later, I can't possibly remember if the Slate's 47 sounds like the Unique 47's and I DON'T CARE. The amazing value that I have discovered is the ability to pic a mic after the fact. That ALONE is worth the price of admission, which by the way, during a sale was less than a grand for all three mics. I have discovered that Meredith voice sounds better on each song with a different "mic." Loud, soft, up tempo, slow, different sessions, etc. Not only that, but I have changed the mic as the arrangement changed to help it cut. I have changed mics after adding compression to get that whisper in your ear thing that became to strident. I haven't even played with the gtr mic's yet. Joy! Speaking of the ML-2's, I DO have 57's, RE-20's, SM7's, etc and my original idea was to A/B them, but I soon got bored with this idea, because I DON'T CARE. (see above) I do have one experiment I have left to try tho. You know the old technique of micing a gtr cab with a 57 tight and a Royer a bit back? I want to try it with ONE ML-2, then duplicate the track. Make one a 57 and adjust the proximity to close, make the other a 121 and adjust the proximity further away, maybe a tiny delay, pan to taste. I'll let you know.
that's the mark of a great song, you can do anything to it, and it still sounds good. liked your arpeggio choices - on the prechorus i would have ditched the last note, though. i think mics with good body and an open top work best for her voice, darkened a bit with the pre. really cool guitar tone. and amazingly good sound on the drums with just those two mics. other than the missing stereo image, i think that, with a little processing, that sound is incredibly transformable for so many different styles, and it makes mixing drums a breeze. maybe a stereo pair for the overheads would solve the stereo problem. but it's true you need a drummer that can do the cymbal mix in the performance.
Great close range vocal mic! Slate has some incredible next-gen hardware that brings studio quality sound to home users. That said, having both this and the Townsend Sphere, I prefer the Sphere by a long shot.
Question...I have an ml1 but also hardware distressor and 1073 clone. I like to run through my distressor and 1073 before my symphony desktop. Does this totally defeat the purpose with the mic emulation since I'm running the hardware prior to the plug in? Thanks 😊
@@Producelikeapro really? Awesome, thanks! I thought running I to the mic pre/comp before going Into the daw may disturb the emulation in the plug in and defrat the purpose.
@@nelnich4445 in theory yes, however, you will be sending a very controlled signal as though you were singing with great level dynamics. You can experiment and see what you prefer!
Do I understand correctly? microphone emulations work adequately only with a microphone from slate? emulation is essentially signal equalization, right?
I just bought the VMS mic and I love it, but I need to know where you insert Melodyne when using the VSM software. VSM goes on top of the vocal track, so does Melodyne go above it or below it?
Put melodyne before any kind of processing, think of it simply that your singer is perfectly in pitch and singing into the VMS system, add emulation, EQ compression, fx from there.
Lovely stuff, I think you're missing a wee E minor at the end of each bridge, I think it's F, G, Em... It's either Em or a Dm but I can't be arsed getting out of bed to get my guitar to test it 😄
Soon i will record and also mix my own album. Looking already forward to share it with the PLAP community and maybe send something in to feedback friday :) Boy, it would be great to own/or even win, a mic like that and be able actually to use it on all different instruments. Thanks for the cool and informative Video, Warren!
I have this microphone and the Townsend labs. The thing I like about the Townsend Labs is it's a dual capsule. Also I like the software better than the slate so what I do when I am using the slate microphone is use the Townsend software. Have you messed with the Townsend Mic yet? If so please send a link
Ha, what are the chances that all the time you spent with Mr Clearmountain factored in on you wanting to cover this :) Keith would dig the spin on the guitars I'd think. I liked that 37a on the flute. Loosely related fun fact. When I hung out with the Warehouse's Ron Obvious back in the day, he raved about Sony 37a & 38b's.
YES! I've always loved this song! I have covered it so many times, we used to do it in E minor, orrignallly it was in F# minor and now here it is in A Minor!
just a side note...every vocal part I recoded on "A Time To Love" was a C12....Steveland wanted to buy it and the cartage Co. (DFX) wouldn't sell it to him ,just wanted to continue renting it to him...for years...a few years back I did sessions over at Aspin Pittman's place (RIP) and he had a "crap-ton" of mics he bought from cartage Co. all over LA...he told me he managed to purchase this mic...don't know? but the c12 I used match session sheet docs from Whitney Huston sessions.
It uses Ilok cloud service so you need an internet connection I think. I havent got the mic yet, but informed about the Ilok cloud usage with the Slate Helpdesk. My other slate stuff in the Ilok cloud also doesn't work when I have no internet connection. So you can use it without physical Ilok, but i think not without internetconnection
What's better to have in your studio if you must make a choice: A premium microphone or headphones? Edit: And you don't have a treated room, nor any speakers/monitors.
Brilliant presentation as usual Warren :-) re Tech...I bought the liquid channel when it firat came out...cost more than an avalon at the time. It has a really great pre...the one with no emulations hehe. Just too many options...could have sold the avalon for more than i paid for it.. the take away is...minimise your options and learn your gear exceedingly well. I have so many mics and options but at the end of the day i use a very versed handful.of options. Do you reeaally know what a diff high end cables make as well as knowing the impedance loading of your pres??? The amount of depth even in old school tube pre...the interdependence is wild. The slate sounds good but just my 3c...too many options can be counter productive...the liquid channel still sounds great but its obselete tech that im wait for a capacitor to dry out and then throw in the bin because its too dear to repair vs sebatron tube pre...still just as brilliant and same $ value 20 years later. Do yiurself a favour...stop buying everything...its amazing what you can do with an sm57 into analysis plus/vovox cable and a good pre...if you get my drift. Sometimes i think all the toys and perfection are killing music :-)
@@Producelikeapro sorry it was.long...no one will listen of course...we all have to find our way. A lot of reviews about mics leave a lot about the signal path unspoken. Brauner use vovox for a reason...Mr Neve built 'air' into the isa based on impedance knowledge etc ;-) eg an nt1a plugged into a vovox into a sebatron valve with a lot of valve gain becomes a silky detailed beauty...plug into a cheap cable into 'air' on a clartett sounds brittle and sibilant;-)
My only issue with slate is this seems expensive, but if you get the all access for a year they say you get access to every plugin sample and tutorial. You download the installer program but you find out very quick the only plugin you dont get is this one.

Hi Warren! Dream mics -> Flea 47, LCT 1040, Telefunken ELAM 251. But I'm very happy with my Chandler TG. ;)
Chandler is a wonderful mic!
Damnnn your lighting and camera quality on my monitor is going craazy!
Hey Warren, I love this Mic and love your channel. Keep up the great work. Cheers.
Thanks ever so much
I heard the first progression and im like this sounds like bryan adams😂 nice work. I love the ML1. I use it with the 1073 emulation in vmr with cla vox. Gives me a great chain. I like tracking through it. I don’t know if the emulations are working while tracking but the mic itself sounds great😎
Thanks ever so much for sharing experience
O use that mic almost everyday! Love it.
My plan is to very soon get one more ML1 and a bunch of ML2s to record a whole band. There's a video from Glen where he miced a drum kit and the emulations even emulate the different spills on different models...
Very cool version of that song. Loved the electric guitar chords and fills too. Nice effects.
i own the Slate ML1 vintage and several of the ML2 they are amazing mics for what you pay for them, well worth the money
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it
@@Producelikeapro Thanks man 🤘
My dream mic changes with my own moods.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Mine is coming tomorrow, I am kinda excited.
Marvellous!
I own an ML1. I have no idea if the emulations are accurate. But I do know they sounds really good.
Nice vid guys! I know on my vms one preamp i need to have it all the way up for a vocal like this, but it sounds great!
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing Josh!
Drums sound incredible. My ears hear vintage microphones.
Thanks Manny!! You Rock!
Run the Slate microphone through The Golden Age Pre 73 MKIII and crank The gain to about 50-55 and reduce the output
the coloration is fantastic, and i bet it sounds amazing.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Agreed! I use the 251 on all of my wife's vocals and it sounds amazing.
I love your videos as much for the great music as the learning. BRAVO!
Thanks ever so much
the bananas buttery sound quality is unmatched brilliant
That flute is so cool!!!!!
Thanks ever so much Lily!
Sweet version I got chills
Thanks ever so much! Did you hear my Geordie Killing Joke guitar references? Ha
@@Producelikeapro indeed brilliant
Awesome job from everyone. Helped to steer me in the right direction. ✊🏼✨
Do you have to use the Preamp emulations in the software?? I want to use my real preamps on the way in.
Went straight into my Audient!
Great review, would love your review of the Acustica Audio Lava microphone emulation software just released and see how it compares to the ML1... Yes, those Jones Scanlon Reds are amazing, have the exact same ones and love them, hope you're enjoying yours too Warren 🙂
Great video! Thanks for the multitracks!
My pleasure! Thanks ever so much!
How would something like this mic work with a UAD interface?
I would basically be bypassing my UAD stuff and use software monitoring with this system?
You don't have to bypass anything, the plugin opens in your DAW
This sounds great but I’ve heard this mic be too sibilant in other videos like Oak Felders video when he plays Demi Lovato recording. Have they updated it?
I recorded this completely flat with no EQ or compression and with a pop screen going into an affordable Audient iD44 interface. Not sure how others have done it?
@@Producelikeapro OK thanks for the reply! I almost wrote it off but sounds pretty good here
@@jacksp8de glad to be able to help!
awesome sounds! Looks and sounds great
Thanks ever so much Conor!
SM57 & SM58 are my everything - for less than £200 but hey, if I had the beans...
Thanks for sharing!
I just bought a Beyer 160 and 130 ribbon, so I’m looking forward to trying out on their own and together as an MS pair.
Thanks for sharing
Owned one and liked it a lot (so much that I bought all the expansions), but once I upgraded to HDX for the Hybrid Engine it became useless because the plugin isn't AAX DSP. Sold it a few months back and got a WA87 and WA8000. At some point I'll check out the Townsend Labs since it supports AAX DSP.
Wow what a cover and great info about the ml1 thanks!
Thanks ever so much
Great cover of Run To You, guys 🤘🤩
Thanks ever so much
Came for the mic, stayed for the song!❤
Is this the same mic as in the original kit with the special pre and software package? (You reviewed some years ago, IIRC)
Yes, that's correct!
Absolutely stellar voice! 👍👍👍
Yes! Katie rules!
I have used some of the mics they model previously so I have some frame of reference for a few, but the beautiful thing is it doesn't actually matter how accurate it sounds like a U47 or whatever, and regardless of the fact that every U47 will sound a little different, there's so many options you're bound to find a good match for your source just by listening and comparing, and like any other mic you'll learn what each of them do to the sound so you can make informed decisions about how best to use each of them.
is this any good with the mics it comes with or do I NEED the blackbird expansion???
I'm impressed with the mics that came with it!
Were you using the VMS pres or did you do something else? I run my Slate mics direct into my Clarett with good results. I never felt the need to buy the Slate preamps.
Straight into an Audient!
Blair is the man!
He’s pretty darn amazing isn’t he?
How much extra is the software to run it ? And do I need a ilok usb ?
Did you use the VMS 1 pre on this setup? Trying to work out whether I need to buy both to get this outcome?
Does the purchase of the mic include the FG-73 and FG-76 preamps?
that's the mark of a great song, you can do anything to it, and it still sounds good. liked your arpeggio choices - on the prechorus i would have ditched the last note, though. i think mics with good body and an open top work best for her voice, darkened a bit with the pre. really cool guitar tone. and amazingly good sound on the drums with just those two mics. other than the missing stereo image, i think that, with a little processing, that sound is incredibly transformable for so many different styles, and it makes mixing drums a breeze. maybe a stereo pair for the overheads would solve the stereo problem. but it's true you need a drummer that can do the cymbal mix in the performance.
Thanks ever so much for your great comment!
Hi Warren that Revstar is that the standard one or the Japanese one?Thank you for the great show
It's the entry level Elements and it's AMAZING!!
I recently purchased the LL16. Yours sounds very good so the Revstar is next on my wish list.

@@thecoastCoverband I LOVE it!
Thanks 😊
I imagine that sounds amazing! That's all that matters! If unsure you can experiment and see what you prefer!
@@Producelikeapro thank you so much for that info....i was hesitant but now I'm going to try it. I'll let you know how it sounds. Thanks 😊
It's either Em or a Dm but I can't be arsed getting out of bed to get my guitar to test it 😄
Sounds incredible! Are you using the VMS One Preamp with the mic or the UK Sound 1173? Apologies if you mentioned in the video.
Will this mic be a good fit for a singer with a powerful voice or a belting singer?
Can you tell me about the mic's self noise? is it a bit too noisy?
What kind of interface or preamp you are using to bring right input levels into your DAW?
I used an Audient iD44 for this video
@@Producelikeapro do you recommend that interface above the focusrite scarlett?
Soon i will record and also mix my own album. Looking already forward to share it with the PLAP community and maybe send something in to feedback friday :) Boy, it would be great to own/or even win, a mic like that and be able actually to use it on all different instruments. Thanks for the cool and informative Video, Warren!
Nice cover!!
I have this microphone and the Townsend labs. The thing I like about the Townsend Labs is it's a dual capsule. Also I like the software better than the slate so what I do when I am using the slate microphone is use the Townsend software. Have you messed with the Townsend Mic yet? If so please send a link
Beautiful song! 👍
Thanks ever so much!
I'm sold, and they sold one more of their VMS ML-1
Marvellous
That is a great tool combination very cool.
Ah yes! I know of that mythical C12 that was rented for every session in LA! Very cool!
The box or advertising says "no dongle required" (or words to that effect) - so can the mic emulations be used if you don't have Internet or an iLok?
It uses Ilok cloud service so you need an internet connection I think. I havent got the mic yet, but informed about the Ilok cloud usage with the Slate Helpdesk. My other slate stuff in the Ilok cloud also doesn't work when I have no internet connection. So you can use it without physical Ilok, but i think not without internetconnection
ilok cloud so more than likely you wont be able to use without an internet connection. it has to check the license on startup
@@flipnap2112 Thanks. See, that's the thing - iLok Cloud is a virtual dongle. That's marketing for ya. :/
Wow! Thanks for sharing all of that amazing information!

I take that back, I may be blind as a bat, because now I see it
Nice interpretation
