I saw Social Destortion and Sonic Youth open for Neil Young and I got my tickets by singing happy birthday to Neil and his crew at Chi Chi's! Amazing show, with an unforgettable story attached.
Local H, great band from just outside Chicago that still puts out great albums and great live shows. If you only known "Bound for the Floor" (the copaceptic song), check them out. I actually own that Mudhoney "Tomorrow Never Hits" on CD, seems to be about $8 median on Discogs, so not as valuable as Jamie guessed. I found Mudhoney's major label releases to be the weak point of their career, as they were awesome on Sub Pop before and after. The Cure "Wild Mood Swings", an album I hated when it came out but I relistened a few years ago and I think it's actually pretty good. I fully endorse "Jamie's Douche Rock Collection" as an episode.
The one bad cover that comes to mind is Matchbox 20 - “Yourself or Someone Like You”. What is up with the weird guy on the cover? Also in that category would be Bruce Hornsby - “Spirit Trail.”
Thgere's a song called Eddie Vedder on that Local H album. It sounds like a Nirvana song created with AI. great show guys. No one mentioned these horrible 90s album covers Fleetwood Mac - Time Alanis Morissette - Supposed former infatuation junkie ZZ Top - XXX Collective Soul - Hints Allegations and things left unsaid Pat Boone - No more mr nice guy Radiohead - Pablo Honey Candlebox - Lucy Stan Ridgeway - Black Diamond Entombed - Same difference
Believe it or not, but Load was not only my introduction to Metal, it was also the first music album I bought with my own money. I think up to this point I owned only cowboy and pirate audiobooks.
As soon as Grant said the most seen record in the cut out bin, I knew it was REM monster! It’s actually a good album though! Lol BTW, the guy on the cover of the matchbox 20 album is the same dude from the cover of Van Halen III.
I agree with Jamie on Divine Intervention, it's an awesome cover, probably the best Slayer ever had. And what's wrong with Metallica's Load? I don't really care what materials they used for that cover art, the image itself is cool, I'm pretty sure this is a close look at flames of fire on the surface of the sun.
Why is there such an obsession with trying to understand everything? What's wrong with being ambiguous or even provoking thought? Why should the artist treat us the listener like children?
I couldn't agree more. Art in general tends to be ambiguous and contain hidden meanings. Take the album cover with the two children with their hands over their ears. What on earth was wrong with that cover? It is an excellently posed and executed photograph, implying a concern over something - maybe a child's concern, maybe a general concern. I don't know the album in question but I do know that the photograph raises a question that invites an intelligent response. No luck around here! On these album cover discussions, here and elsewhere, the panelists never discuss the substantive issues raised by the portrayal of the imagery. They just go, "Boo! Hiss!" Then the next person goes, "Boo! Hiss!" Then the third person goes, "Yuk! Yuk!" and they all burst out laughing. There is never any pushback. The whole purpose is to have an album cover burning session, who cares whose work they denigrate, for how little reason, and from however minimal a base of knowledge of art.
I think the 90s covers are worse than the 80s, everyone's using the new digital design programs of the time trying to be arty, it all looks very dated now

Something tells me that none of you guys ever went to art school or have ever regularly visited an art museum. I'm, sorry, you embarrass yourselves. Please stick to music.
You can have an opinion if something looks good or not. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and art is subjective. I don't think you can be taught to have the correct opinion.
It's not about having a correct opinion - it's about respect and evaluating a piece of art with intelligence, and preferably experience if knowledge is too much of a stretch. Take the discussion of Billy Joel's 'River of Dreams' cover. All that was said about it was, "I don't like that," or words to that effect. Really? That is all there is to say? The album itself is about the sweep of Billy Joel's personal history against the sweep of world history. On the left of the painting, you have the Garden of Eden in its innocence. On the right, you have modern industrialisation and the reduction of homes to uniform boxes. On the left again, you have medieval warfare; in the middle you have modern warfare. Then there is the Great Wall of China, angels, someone swimming and a fishing vessel - I don't know why, but these obviously have some personal meaning. The centrepiece is a portrait of Billy Joel himself with a river running through his head. Personally, I find that somewhat too literal of the title, but it does at least illustrate the title, so it can't be described as irrelevant. Can't you at least explain that much before you explain why you think it is awful? The topic wasn't "covers I like and dislike," it was about covers that are objectively horrible.
Thanks for the shoutout Peter!

We need a show on Jamies douche rock collection!
Oooh, that Wig - Deliverance cover is so scary and disturbing, I might have nightmares because of that picture...
I also said "That's me!" on the 100% Fun cover.
I mean it's not literally me but there's a resemblance.
Random question but does anyone know what the sound effect at 0:36 is called
STP - Tiny Music....Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop. I don't know what the hell they were thinking on that one. It makes no sense.
None of their album covers are good.
The one bad cover that comes to mind is Matchbox 20 - “Yourself or Someone Like You”. What is up with the weird guy on the cover? Also in that category would be Bruce Hornsby - “Spirit Trail.”
I think with that Dream Theater album is they wanted a reference to each song somewhere on that cover.

Btw Grant, Set The Twilight Reeling is one of Lou’s best ones, imo.

I always thought that Billy Joel looked like the guitarist from the Eurythmics! Does not look like Billy Joel! :)

type o negative the origin of the feces
That cover falls way short of awesome . 😅
It's better than Autopsy Shitfun I guess
The album itself is funny, the stage banter.
I got a girl is a horrible song. A fitting lead single from an album with a cover that bad!
Marillion Aftaid Of Sunlight
That would probably be 90% of them 😂
Spacehog Resident Alien. Bad cover one hit wonder with one shit hit.
Pist. On number 1 great album but crappy cover.
Hey @MartinPopoff. Is it any surprise that the Obama artist came up with semen and blood under a microscope?

Arty farty
Well, that's the point, isn't it? To have at least some knowledge of the topic you are discussing.
You can have an opinion if something looks good or not. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and art is subjective. I don't think you can be taught to have the correct opinion.
