    Didn't realize I had a Mt Cur dog (pound pup). I knew she was some sort of hunting dog when she obsesesed over treeing squirrels. She is all nose and eyeballs and her body follows wherever her nose or eyes go. I can't say she's the brightest dog I've ever owned in some regards, but she's the fastest. Whew! Can she ever cover ground. Really pretty dog, and affectionate, too. Good family dog.

      The ones I’ve owned and been around have been very affectionate and great family dogs also. Mine is currently asleep next to my baby daughter.

      @@stark_outdoors Thank you so much for the reply. I wish I had found your channel sooner and I might have been able to provide her with what her instincts demand. I've never owned a hunting (treeing) breed before, and imagine my surprise whenever I took her on hikes in the mountains and she just...left. She is on her own planet when we're out in the woods and I've lost her several times. Finally resorted to a shock collar. (Hated to do it.) I do let her chase deer if I know the deer have a good head-start--she's fast enough to catch them--never seen a dog fly straight up a mountainside in seconds. She's a dead ringer for your brindle boy. Question (only if you have the time): is it a breed characteristic for these dogs to be "dog selective?"

      Any tips on training a new squirrel dog when the state you live in doesn’t allow training hunting dogs off leash during off season and the lease is 2 states away or the nearest decent private land is 1 state away. Or would you recommend starting a dog with coons since its year around and then start hunting squirels so they at least have experience? Either way want to hunt squirrel and coon but mainly focus on hunting squirrel?

    How do you work a young cur dog that tends to tree real quick? I have a young female who is all about treeing and sometimes doesn’t check the tree before she locks down on it. I really want her to work the track more. I will admit she’s only my second dog I’ve personally trained and I might be partly to blame. When she was real young and treed I really loved up on her, possibly to much.

    • @stark_outdoors
      @stark_outdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So you believe she is slick treeing? Just grabbing a tree? Most cur dogs don’t say a whole lot on the ground, they just tree mostly. If you are 100% positive she is wrong and shouldn’t be treeing on that tree just leash her up say no and take her on. Do the trees she makes look like squirrel trees? Are there dens or nests? Nut bearing trees?

    • @Bullittcurkennels
      @Bullittcurkennels 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stark_outdoors it’s split evenly. She has treed on a lot of nests and dens but has also treed on a few the were 100 percent slick. The only time I getting confused and honestly a little worried is when she trees then I’ll leash her up and re cut and she’ll go about 20 yards and lockdown again.

    • @stark_outdoors
      @stark_outdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Bullittcurkennels if you cut her loose and she just goes and trees an obvious slick in a few seconds just take her on and makes sure she knows to not do it and go hunting. Just be sure to be very very careful doing it because squirrels do timber out so it’s always hard to tell if it really is slick

    Is it in Kentucky? I've been thinking about making a visit there and perhaps securing a job but not right now. I need to visit to check out a place, know what I mean? Nice dog! I run catahoulas myself. Haven't had a mountain cur yet.

    There is a girl at the dog park that has a unruly Mountain Cur. She was told it was a mix bread when she adopted it and only discovered what it was on accident. I was trying to figure out exercises for him that will engage his natural drives and burn his energy properly. Anybody have any suggestions??

    • @stark_outdoors
      @stark_outdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Properly teach it how to come when called so you can catch it and take it into the wild to run and have exercise like they want instead of a confined area with strange people and dogs
