I *so, so* wanted one of these when I was 21. The notion of being able to show up with my piano almost as easily as the guitar players could show up with their guitar. But real strings and real hammers, feels like a piano, sounds like a piano, not just "yeah it's got a keyboard" but the original instrument. Electrified, amplified, portable.
It feels & plays more like a Traditional Acoustic Grand Piano because it has the same action & it has the same type of strings (they're Baby Grand Piano Strings).
PTD Unlimited Vintage 0:03 I guess that explains why those Electric Baby Grand Pianos never caught on w/ Classical Pianists because of the really short & tubby Bass strings w/ those weird overtones & they tend to play sharp.
This piano was the latest fashion in music back in the 1980s. Electronic music and the Yamaha CP-80, was essentially '80s fashion. Of course, electronic music was not original to the decade because it has been around long before 1980, but nevertheless it was, and remains, STRONGLY associated with it, just like the color pallete yellow, magenta and cyan, brightly colored clothes and makeup, women's shoulder pads, and digital typeface.
I have the cp80m but needs to have the output signal repaired. It used to work and the Midi output also worked. Who can repair these in the midwest US?
A friend sold me his 70 in 2007. Like a complete fool, I let it go. If I was going to enter the market for another Yamaha electric grand, I would want it to be an 80 instead. I know a few of them were outfitted with MIDI. I wonder how many of those remain intact and available on the preowned market. Is it doable to have it further outfitted with USB?

It's a True Electric Piano

Nice!! I loved the sound that Leon Russell would get out his CP70, particularly at the low end with the bass cranked up.
as a fan of classical music I can confirm that I've heard the peace at 0:21
The action on these pianos is great! I bypass the electronics on mine which gives it a “warmer” tone
It's a Baby Grand Piano with Pickups attached to the bridges so it can be played through an Amp.
These are great. Elton use to play one on tour with Ray Cooper and he played an amazing rendition of I heard it through the grapevine.
Good lord that sounds lovely

I used to think that CP70's/80'S were too too tinny but it depends what the settings are and what amp it's going through
it sounds so much better on the actual thing compared to the samples yamaha puts on the digital pianos
Tori Amos played one of these on her 1991 performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival, I love how crystal-like it sounded.
It's my favorite voice on my yamaha keyboard arranger station.

I may not always love you, but long as there are stars above you...
