The crab in a box you got is a type of crab called 大闸蟹 or Shanghai hairy crab. You DO NOT buy it for the meat, like you said its full of the yellow innards/miso and that is what they are known for. They are a delicacy and can only be eaten within a 2-3 month period a year. They are known to be expensive crabs in Hong Kong/China. So for the box you got, its a very good deal.
I have been to a Ranch 99 market before and I freaking love it. They have so many stuff that I can’t normally find in regular supermarkets, including Japanese snacks and drinks 😋
Hello Mike Chen. Love watching your videos! Do you think you could do a video in your native language? I wouldn't understand but would definitely watch :) Much love and Kia Ora from Aotearoa, New Zealand!
You were smart to time this with Dungeness season. All the asian markets around me have been having good deals on them, been getting them every weekend.
The Costco in my area has White Rabbit popsicles. I've also seen them sold at 99 Ranch Market. It's so delicious! It's creamy and has a nice chew to it that mimics the candy. 🤤
i think 99 ranch is more of a west coast or california thing, we have over 10 of them just in southern california alone. Def as popular as H-mart for asian food. Its pretty much a nicer updated big asian supermarket that has all the asian things you need for groceries. Some places have boba shops, bakery, and even peking duck
Hot Pot Season. The gas canisters with the red cap go into a portable stove. It’s very common for families to purchase food items and share a hotpot meal at home.
@@RaDemShun I wasn’t understanding what Mike said - I know what hot pot is but that’s not what he said - there was no T or O sound in the words he spoke must be that American accent 🤪
Hairy Crabs are usually eaten for their Roe and not the meat. The roe is supposedly to be amazing and considered a delicacy. So the fact they were small and had not a lot of meat is pretty much the norm with hairy crabs. (Of course, like with nearly everything there are going to be exceptions to the rule)
Mike san, I am actually surprised that you didn’t recognize those small crabs when you bought them. Those Mitten Crabs, or more well known as Shanghai Crabs, are a delicacy between fall and winter. And you are correct in saying that those crabs are meant for eating its miso and roe rather than its meat. There are countless numbers of Chinese restaurants in Japan where they serve this during its season. I recommend you try it out properly, since you already considered as an influential food critic, especially when it comes to Asian food. Cheers.
I have to travel over a mountain to get to a Ranch 99, 1 and a half half hour trip. Absolutely worth it. I usually leave with nothing tho lol, I eat there.
If there are any business owners looking for a city to open up some of these Asian stores, please come to Pensacola, FL. We got no real Asian grocery stores here or any thing remotely close to a China town. Who wants to be the first one to open up an Asian grocery store or a China town here in Pensacola, it might be a gold mine here. Just saying....
mind telling me which location this is... not all 99 ranch have this lineup. I went to one that had alot, went to another with nothing, but neigther had the to go box of self serve. Thanks
I think Mikey needs to do more research regarding some of these foods to do a proper review. For the 酸菜鱼 (sauerkraut fish), the fish is suppose to be snappy for this type of dish (even on the box itself says its suppose to be crunchy). This type of fish fillet in chinese is called 脆肉皖鱼片. As for the crab, alot of other comments made a good point. On the box itself it says “大闸蟹”,this type of crab in HK its a delicacy known for the golden innards (like uni). Not suppose to be meaty like dungeons crab. Being on sale its a great deal for 29.99. I respect that Mikey has his own taste preferences, but I can tell that he didn't do enough research for these dishes.
I don't know what state you're at, but the 99 Ranch near me here in CA does not sell a good number of products you showed. For example, that lunch box that contained two pounds of food for $13 -- non-existent here. The food in their restaurant section is NOT cheap. That must be some kind of 99 Ranch superstore.
he's from the US and T&T is only found in Canada save for the most recent one in WA state. Most likely he's never been to one as if you visit Richmond you won't really want to visit the super market to eat,.
@@jennifernettelbladt394 i meant T&T supermarket based in Canada and they are going to open their first store in US and it's in Bellevue WA this summer.
@@jennifernettelbladt394 That T&T is a great HK dimsum restaurant, probably the best in the North Seattle/Snohomish area. T&T I'm talking about is the new branch of the T&T Supermarket which opened in Redmond recently. The two are not the same.
how cool! here in va, we have not ONE but TWO Lotte’ asian markets (with a few other culture’s foods) within a few miles of each other (chantilly and centreville, va. As always, Xing knows nothing, even about Chinese foods. What a joke
True, but they used to label this as mitten crab or Shanghai hairy crab, not just crab
Thank you for your infos :)

Mackerel is one of those fish that are just naturally yummy. Its why sharks always have a smile on their face.
Pro tip when eating take out fried food at home if it’s a bit cooled put it in your air fryer for a quick reheat it is amazing 😊
When Mikey said “I don’t remember my childhood tasting this bad” I suddenly bursted into laughter!
