I agree with Gabe on the Bus driver etiquette. Kinda the same as when a waiter brings you your food, you dont HAVE to say thanks, but its nice to acknowledge them as an actual human being and say thanks, doesn't take much effort from you, but it's a polite gesture.
exactly, they're performing a service, in the drivers case a public service. it might be their job and they might be getting paid for it but that doesn't mean that they dont appreciate some sort of gratitude or thanks from the everyman.
Edward Bottle You would die for alcohol poisoning before the end of the first mission. He is terrible at this game... but then he's BS the entire time and has infinite lives... but it is still hard to watch.
Mouse cursor... Mouse cursoooooor.... MOUSE CURSSOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR!!!! That being said, check out New Ghostbusters II for the NES. It's my favorite Ghostbusters game.
Re-watching every video on this channel, still sad that it's pretty much all over with Drown Out. Also, I love each time Gabe shuts down Yatz by making him laugh over certain things. Never gets old.
I'm reminded of how my Mother one time wrote to the guys who ran Olive Garden because the waiter we had (which in turn that specific Olive Garden) got us our orders REALLY fast (i wasn't finished with my appetizer when my food arrived, and i am a fairly fast eater.) and did an overall fantastic job (the food was also better then my local one. That Helped) so when she went around asking for a way to contact them they assumed she had a complaint. When she emailed them, she actually got a email back, thanking her for her feedback, even remarking it's rare it was that someone would contact them to tell them how GOOD a job one of their restaurants did. Think that Restaurant was contacted by them and was rewarded (said Waiter to). To summarize, yeah, the vocal people are the ones who complain rather than the ones who are satisfied. Occasionally some people DO go out of their way to express their satisfaction, but not NEARLY as often as the ones who are dissatisfied.
people in California tend to say "thanks" or something to the bus driver because you're NOT paying them when you get on, you're paying the transit system. saying "thanks" is basically "thank you for being on time and not wrecking into a light pole"
52:00 All I remember of "King Arthur and the Knights of Justice" is the theme. I don't think I've ever seen the show. 55:00 - Closest thing I have to a trigger word is, due to the specifics of a robbery I was victim of, is the word "trigger". So the rest of the Internet annoys me a bit more than it did before the trigger word meme got off the ground.
I think the bus driver thing varies from culture to culture, where I am in Ireland most people thank the bus driver to the point it’s seems quite rude not to. Most Irish people seem very polite and chatty with staff generally.

"He believes that gays can't whistle." It's funny how I can't, but I like to wank to women. I'm having an identity crisis.
Master Chief was a normal kid who was taken away at age 8 and replaced by a clone in his normal life to be placed into a training program till he turned 14 and went under genetic modifications that gave him super human abilities along with half of the original Spartans. The other half didn't really make it through the modification process.
The main issues I had with the choices in Fable 3 were that they were extremes (either renovate the old orphanage or turn it into a brothel) and the fact that Reaver was the presenter of the bad option (when I personally would have made sure he was "one of the first ones against the wall" after the coup d'état for the shit he pulled earlier in the game, whether I was playing a "good guy" or a "bad guy" character). The choices were too ham-handed and delivered by a character you had every reason to want to see dead (and if you had enough gold by the end there were no reason to agree with Reaver's suggestions, you could pay the difference out of pocket).
Also Sir Walter was there when the Crawler was explained so he could've explained that a huge evil force is coming so if we don't raise an army we're all going to die. Also I don't see why you can't just reverse the decisions after the one year period.
In response to Gabe talking about "Australian" not being an easy thing to define, it's pretty much the same here in Canada. Tons of immigration (Although we encourage it) and no real defined "Canadian" style. As for our food, we don't really have much unique. Butter Tarts is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that is only made in Canada. Ketchup chips came from here but now you can get it in a lot of places. People not from Canada like to look at us and assume a lot of stereotypes but those stereotypes aren't really part of our culture, just like all of the stereotypes about Australia. It's common to find people who say they're proud of Canada and they can site reasons, but it's very rare to find someone who exemplifies Canadianess. All I can think of are people who break of icicles to cool their beer.
Well Canada does have certain things it feels unique about. It burned Washington during the war of 1812, my Canadian friend is quite jingoistic about this. Also, Maple Syrup, Lumberjacks and Mounties :P
Mah-Dry-Bread Yeah, I know, just a mention :D Also, you occupy the world's second largest nation. I know most of it is deserted but still, my country is the size of new jersey.
Eh, why not thank the bus driver? It's like thanking the cashier at a store. Unless I'm somehow mistaken and doing this is a faux pas amongst fancy modern bullshit people
i usually do it, if only because there's usually no other living souls on the bus, because nobody uses them anymore (in small towns) i think of it like "yes your getting paid, but your getting paid to drive around in circles and stop every once in awhile" and the fact that they can do that as a day to day is just astonishing.... so i thank them.
People get thanked if they go above and beyond to help me. They don't get thanked for just doing their job. I've worked several retail jobs. I've never expected a thank you, and am always off put when an unnecessary thank you is floated out there.
Did you know Mario and Luigi's supposed love lives are reversed? Like you said, no sign of Mario and peach, but Daisy's introductory game concluded with Mario and Daisy falling in love at first sight. Also, in Galaxy, Rosalina's story describes her mother as Peach, and her father as Luigi.
Saying 'thanks drive' to the driver is a fine Welsh tradition, any time I've taken a bus, coach or taxi it's just the done thing to thank the driver. Door's open 'thanks drive' or 'nice one drive'. I think it's just thanks for driving safely kinda thing. I never thought to question it as it's just casually polite. I mean if the driver is dangerous and drives like a demented loon then fuck 'em, but that's my attitude to dodgy driving bastards.
American here. i've never said it but i dont think it wierd. it's like thanking a police officer or firefighter for their service. they performed a public service and while that may be their job. it's still kind to offer thanks for it. maybe englishmen are just pricks idk
I always say "thanks!" to the bus driver unless I'm leaving through the back. Mostly as "thanks for not completely missing my stop like they used to do ALL THE TIME when I was coming home after middle school," but they don't need to know that.
For the first time in all these videos, it was painful to watch Gabriel being bad when he was fighting the fire ninja boss. He deliberately jumped into projectiles and body while standing still would have made him invulnerable. My gods.
52:51 That's weird. When I used to work for the Co-op and KFC we had a regular customer that looked exactly like that. Really weird bloke, I'm 99% sure he was a serial killer.
I've looked through the comments and no-one (that I've seen) has mentioned Veronica from Fallout: New Vegas. She just casually says that she had a girlfriend and it is not a big deal.
49:25 Box Lunch, from Danny Phantom, is the offspring of the Lunch Lady and The Box Ghost. I wonder is the Danny Phantom wiki explains how that all works... I just checked, and no it doesn't.
Fuck yeah! I never expect a new episode, and I'm always shocked that they are sticking to their guns and making new ones every week. Fucking awesome, thank you Yahtzee!
Which you know it's just a retroactive change, since she modelled Hermione after her younger self (which is why she wasn't originally an attractive girl, either).
If I recall correctly it was more passive-progressive than that. She didn't actually say Hermione was black she said she _could see_ Hermione being black, which is amazingly patronizing. If you're writing a story and you want it to be inclusive, then do it. If you didn't think about it and you made an all-white cast, just own up to it. Pretending to be whatever amount of inclusive will most pander to each individual in the audience is gallingly transparent.
I just wanna say that everything you talk about on these segments or shows, whatever you want to call them, are always great. I enjoy a lot of them because many hit close to home with either me or people i know. Thanks
Lara Croft actually has no implied sexual preference as far as I can remember, for all her sexualisation she never actually has any ' intimate relationships', so maybe lesbian?
they tried making her gay in the remake but they made them cut it and made her either the most awkward straight person ive ever seen in the remakes and comics or have no sexual or romantic desire what so ever.
See, where I'm from (Wales), we always thank the bus driver. They do this in Scotland and both Northern Ireland and Eire, too... but not in England so much. Odd.
Mater Chief is not a clone, he is a child stolen by the government like all spartans, but they covered up the abduction by replacing their former lives with clones (which all sadly die later). they then heavily genetically enhanced the children (because children are much easier to genetically modify than adults) to make them stronger, faster, smarter etc etc than any other human. the armour that you have in the game makes you even stronger on top of that. anyway, but a downside to being heavily genetically modified is that the spartans lack any form of sex drive. and regarding Cortana, she chose her holographic form herself when she was created from the brain (quite literately) of Dr. Halsey, who she mirrors, or at least a much younger version of Halsey.
Yeah, it's like 'thanks for driving decently' or 'thanks for stopping at my stop since you could've easily just ignored me and driven past it like such and such other bus driver' or 'thanks for not getting into a horrific accident and getting us all killed' or something...
Gyaaaful like CerberusLives said.. its just good manners. something you do without thinking? just like how you cant open a door without holding it till you check and see that no one else is coming, ppl that dont do say thanks or hold a door by instinct are just dicks :)
my grandma was forced to write right-handed in school. she still does, but does everything else with her left hand. mind you, this was also 1930s Germany
I think there's gonna be no problems with gay characters when game journalists don't make a fuss about it: Gone Home and Left Behind DLC got praised cause their main character was gay, That is promoting discrimination towards gay people, "positive" but you still treat them as "them", as if they were different only cause they love their gender. I mean Japan nails it: some characters are gay, some not (mostly in their RPGs)
In response to the bus question, I've always said "have a nice day" to the driver. I agree with Yahtzee that I don't need to thank someone I've paid, but they always seem to appreciate that I acknowledge them as a person by wishing them a good one.
Going back and watching this in 2022, when they seem sure that 'the people' would be ok with any sort of austerity to save them from 'something coming'... AHAHAHAAH no. They'd never accept that.
Kanji Tatsumi and Naoto Shirogane struggle with their sexuality in Persona 4, and since it's a game heavily relying on characters to drive the game, the sexual diversity that these characters offer makes the game greater, in my own opinion of course
"Let's just say the master chief is gay" Actually, he's neither. His sexuality was reduced quite a bit during his training/augments, so he isn't sexual. "I like to think... ...He just chose that one..." Actually, she chose him. So... "Isn't he a clone?" No, he was abducted as a kid... ...And then reach was glassed... ...And once the Didact was killed, he started to regain a sense of free will. Does anybody actually care?
Just a thought on the 'Thanking the bus driver' debate: When you pay to ride the bus, you're paying the organization that provides the bus service, not the bus driver. The bus driver is responsible for getting you where you're going without getting you killed. Not the hardest job an the average day, but does entail a good deal of alertness and responsibility, foresight and experience, and in the odd emergency, no small amount of skill in piloting a roughly 20 ton bus through god-knows-what to save our ungrateful, collective ass.
You're not paying him directly, but he is being paid. It is his job and he is doing it for a salary, not out of the kindness of his heart. And you are paying to get on the bus, so noone is doing you any favours, neither the bus driver nor the company.
***** Human interaction boils down to some very simple questions. "Will it help, how difficult is it?" In the case of the bus driver it's "Thanks mate" as you get off. It's effortless, habitual, and gives you a positive interaction. Next time maybe he'll give you a free ride for it, but either way it'll help him out and hurt you none. That's profit.
The way my Mom told me (Who is a bus driver) to thank them, is they didn't really NEED to help you, because they can kick you off the buss for swearing, or crash the bus into a wall just to kill you. Bus drivers also deal with a lot of bullshit from people who are hostile because they don't go to somewhere at the opposite side of the city in 10 minutes, or because they told them to "Have a nice day".
Speaking of the absence of Winston, and similar to the gay thing, how many black video game protagonists can you name who are not stereotypical gangstas? It does not count if you are allowed to customize the character's appearance, or when there is an ensemble cast with no clear protagonist.
genewatson100 One could argue he is a main character, he's right there at the begining, and I dare anyone to tell me they didnt use Barrett 90% of the time.
Lee from Telltale's the Walking Dead game? ... now I'm sad ;u; Then there's the Prototype 2 guy. I should probably try playing that game again. Nilin from Remember Me is mixed-raced, not sure if she counts. Not many though, which is disheartening.
I can imagine Yahtzee yelling at clerks for being polite. "Hello sir, how can I help you?" "Don't 'sir' me, it's your fookin job to help me!" Well, on the other hand I guess one of Yahtzees' jobs is to write rude (yet funny) comments on video games, so it might just rubbed of to the rest of his life
im english and i always say thanks to the bus driver, sure ive paid him but he still did you a service and it costs nothing to show gratitude also i used to work in a hotel sure people diddnt have to say thanks but it when they did it felt pretty good :)
Actually, the Spartans aren't clones, but individuals raised from childhood to become super soldiers. They are trained and then administered dangerous experimental drugs to increase their strength, although many are lost during this process. Not that it really matters, but I read some of the novels and thought I'd chime in.
The point I do not truly understand is the reason video game characters actually having sexual preferences or sexual characteristics. I am pretty sure you can create character and progress a plot without handing out sexual preferences or creating needless drama. Characters need those only in sims or games like that, why does my half-naked barbarian have to have any kind of personality? I just want him to run around killing and smashing and being cool. I have sex pushed on my face everywhere I want to be free in my gaemz.
It's a point of connection that everyone shares. You're right, sex is pushed in your face a lot. If you really wonder why it's important... from when you wake up in the morning till you go to bed at night, just count the number of times heterosexuality is assumed of you throughout the day. When you're gay it is incredibly alienating to have society to push heterosexuality so hard and it's nice in a game where the character is supposed to reflect you (Dragon Age for example) to have them reflect you more closely by allowing for them to be gay.
Calvin Hamel I reckon he's thinking less Persona 4 and more Dragon Age two. Sexuality because sex. Just sex. Actually that's the case for most Bioware stuff. Sex just comes up the second you chum up with someone of the opposite gender or for some characters the exact same. In Persona 4 it's the whole game in a lot of ways. And really is about sexuality. But that isn't the game where you just run around and kill things like he described. That's a massively character orientated game. He's asking for games where you get a lot out of neutral elements to stop making a point to give you so many poontang options and make a big deal out of it. And don't mention that you can get that out of Persona 4 because the monsters are almost entirely Freudian. Some are just horrifyingly blunt.
Oda Swifteye Persona 4 is out of the question here because sexuality is one of the main points of the game; it's about 16-17 year old people, of course sexuality, sexual tension and sexual intentions are gonna be in. I'm talking about too much sex in stupid places like in a medieval setting with glorious knights fighting orcs then the knight tries to fuck one orc. Why would you put it there it doesn't belong in this universe. I don't want sex shoved in everything, if it has it's place do go on; but take it out of my action -oriented games and spend more on gameplay.
***** It can also be translated to "I'm Asexual and blatant attempts at TnA make me uncomfortable. Especially when I played a game and didn't expect that to happen."
I think Bill and Harold's falling out was over Groundhog day, apparently, they wanted to take it in very different directions, with Bill wanting it to be more serious and existential, and Harold wanted it more goofy and comedic. SUPPOSEDLY. Despite that being the complete opposite of what would make sense.
Why are you calling it a Genesis Ben? You're British for god's sake!!! And the idea that was supposed to be in Ghostbusters 3 that was int he video game was the alternate new york dimension.
I believe Rhianna Pratchett said she wanted to make Lara Croft overtly gay in Tomb Raider 2013, but Square Enix said no... So it was just strongly implied instead.
My two cents on gay protagonists or side characters in video games. I'd first like to see the video game market to write a decent female character that isn't garbadge or sexalized teen bait. The recent Tomb Raider (althought an awful game imo) is a step in the right direction but still a lot of stuff feels way to forced. The whole industry has this 'woman are totaly different and don't have anything in common with male characters' thing going which is realy annoying. Over all I think Gabe said it best last or so video, the games industry needs a culture of directors and writers. At the moment a lot of stuff produced looks flashy as shit but when it comes to story and relatable characters there is still a lot missing in comparison to movies/books.
I'd love to see a gay protagonist as long as the developers give him a deeper personality and identity than "I'm gay". Go for "I'm a person who is gay" and not "I'm gay and also I'm a person"
I had the same confusion when I visited the states and shopkeepers asked me how I was. To begin with I was so confused, that I actually told them how my day was. once the jet leg wore off, I obviously realized that that it was an empty pleasantry, and that I was just supposed to say "fine thanks, how about you?"
The only thing I really liked about GhostBusters 2 was the scene when the Titanic docked and the harbour master said, "Better late than never."

Leave Clive alone!!
Natas Baker I don't hate Clive, but he's like that jerk that stands up during a movie and never sits down.
That was fantastic....

Is there a Red Dwarf reference quota in these "Drown Out" videos? If so, keep it up. It makes my hologram hard-light.

Gabe totally called Ellie being gay. Good shot.
its really not this day and age.
is she a woman? is she written by a man? is she independent and "strong"? gay.
Hate how Gabriel mashes the jump button on the flame boss you're supposed to duck on. Over and over, refusing to adapt.
I fucking love these videos. Yahtzee and Gabe are really enjoyable to listen to.

Halsey, who she mirrors, or at least a much younger version of Halsey.
hey bud, i love halo lore as much as the next guy but....... yahtzee doesn't care unfortunately.
It's funny, because it's getting harder and harder not to ship you two as the weeks go by...and I ain't even a yaoi fangirl.
you SURE you're not a Yaoi Fangirl?
Saying thanks to a bus driver is surely just good manners? Everyone I know does it.
Yeah, it's like 'thanks for driving decently' or 'thanks for stopping at my stop since you could've easily just ignored me and driven past it like such and such other bus driver' or 'thanks for not getting into a horrific accident and getting us all killed' or something...
Vee Logation
I say thanks for putting up with the crazy bastards who ride the bus and getting me to my destination on time.
Gyaaaful
like CerberusLives said.. its just good manners. something you do without thinking? just like how you cant open a door without holding it till you check and see that no one else is coming, ppl that dont do say thanks or hold a door by instinct are just dicks :)
Mal Broon don't say*
***** So, by that logic, you never thank shop cashiers, or waitresses, or the police, or doctors, or anyone who's just 'doing their job'?
my grandma was forced to write right-handed in school. she still does, but does everything else with her left hand.
mind you, this was also 1930s Germany
Yahtzee's mocking of the tumblr style PC 'social justice' lot is just wonderful
kill3456 yeah dude. They are as humourless and whiny as it gets. So, to put it simply, low hanging (but very enjoyable when prodded) fruit
For what it's worth, Solaire also painted his own armor.
I think there's gonna be no problems with gay characters when game journalists don't make a fuss about it:
Gone Home and Left Behind DLC got praised cause their main character was gay,
That is promoting discrimination towards gay people, "positive" but you still treat them as "them", as if they were different only cause they love their gender.
I mean Japan nails it: some characters are gay, some not (mostly in their RPGs)
was gone homes main character gay? i thought that was the MC's sister
Not a single fucking LDO without Gabe spouting some fucking "das racist" remark.
God dangit, I keep on noticing that Yahtzee says 'vidya game'
In response to the bus question, I've always said "have a nice day" to the driver. I agree with Yahtzee that I don't need to thank someone I've paid, but they always seem to appreciate that I acknowledge them as a person by wishing them a good one.
Going back and watching this in 2022, when they seem sure that 'the people' would be ok with any sort of austerity to save them from 'something coming'... AHAHAHAAH no. They'd never accept that.
I look forward to these so much now!
X2 as awesome with a cup of tea and a joint.
This is now my favourite thing on the internet and if you stop making these videos I will destroy everything.
Why are we still here
Thanking the bus driver seems to be a tradition in my local area (North-west England)
Its just polite. Its weird not to
Yatzee's rant about this made me question his being English.
1:06:00 welp, Gabe predicted that plot point.
Kanji Tatsumi and Naoto Shirogane struggle with their sexuality in Persona 4, and since it's a game heavily relying on characters to drive the game, the sexual diversity that these characters offer makes the game greater, in my own opinion of course
1:05:47 Good prediction Gabe
im predicting 'genetically alternative' as the title for the third DEDA book
First thing I noticed: No Winston. WTF?
Seducing Glados would be creepy since it's heavily implied that she's Chell's mom.
"Let's just say the master chief is gay"
Actually, he's neither. His sexuality was reduced quite a bit during his training/augments, so he isn't sexual.
"I like to think... ...He just chose that one..."
Actually, she chose him. So...
"Isn't he a clone?"
No, he was abducted as a kid...
...And then reach was glassed...
...And once the Didact was killed, he started to regain a sense of free will.
Does anybody actually care?
ThatZommy No?
ThatZommy I do! Maybe. Sort of.
ThatZommy No, of course fucking not.
+ThatZommy You have way to much investment in this
Юлиан Бродняк I happen to collect the novels.
It's quite an interesting universe.
I do love how Yahtzee has to ensure gabe will explain the context of what he's talking about when he brings something up
Just a thought on the 'Thanking the bus driver' debate: When you pay to ride the bus, you're paying the organization that provides the bus service, not the bus driver.
"Will it help, how difficult is it?"
In the case of the bus driver it's "Thanks mate" as you get off. It's effortless, habitual, and gives you a positive interaction. Next time maybe he'll give you a free ride for it, but either way it'll help him out and hurt you none. That's profit.
35:50 - Lol, Marcus Fenix doesn't even respond to Anya's attempts to comfort him throughout gears 3.
Should do a Theme hospital lets drown out. Please?
FF7, maybe? He wasn't a gangsta, just kinda of an asshole.
Jonathon Carroll Barrett wasn't the protagonist, dude.
genewatson100
One could argue he is a main character, he's right there at the begining, and I dare anyone to tell me they didnt use Barrett 90% of the time.
genewatson100 I'd say he was one of them, really.
Lee from Telltale's the Walking Dead game? ... now I'm sad ;u;
Then there's the Prototype 2 guy. I should probably try playing that game again.
Nilin from Remember Me is mixed-raced, not sure if she counts.
Not many though, which is disheartening.
i like how it took gabe over an hour to see he had multiple weapons
This series is fantastic!
Still is after all these years and several rewatches.
I can imagine Yahtzee yelling at clerks for being polite.
"Hello sir, how can I help you?"
"Don't 'sir' me, it's your fookin job to help me!"
Well, on the other hand I guess one of Yahtzees' jobs is to write rude (yet funny) comments on video games, so it might just rubbed of to the rest of his life
That curser
im english and i always say thanks to the bus driver, sure ive paid him but he still did you a service and it costs nothing to show gratitude
also i used to work in a hotel sure people diddnt have to say thanks but it when they did it felt pretty good :)
Another one, loving these!
Around 33:00 somewhere: I'm pretty sure there were multiple cases of openly gay characters in Borderlands 2, as a perfectly normal thing.
You already made a few of these with games that you really liked, so why not do "Let's drown out... Painkiller"?
Yes
*edit* Or maybe even Deus Ex.
Ah, sudden ending, my old nemesis.
You weren't far off on Ellie from the last of us, cause she kisses a girl in the DLC.
And now shes a lesbian in #2
Yeah, I was forced to write with my right hand as a kid. Thinking back to it, it was very, very strange.
I liked Bill Murray in 'What About Bob?'
Same here, my dad and I both love that movie.
It's actually super easy to understand: sometimes games tell stories. Sometimes stories deal with sexuality.
I believe the PC term for gays is Interzone Agent.
No Yahtzee, you're not the only one who remembers the wall monsters from Knightmare, that show was one of the greatest
I got to 44:20 before I realized Yahtzee's mouse cursor was sitting there on the screen. And yes, I watched the whole thing!
Winston always gets the shaft even in the description of the movie.
Why are you calling it a Genesis Ben? You're British for god's sake!!!
And the idea that was supposed to be in Ghostbusters 3 that was int he video game was the alternate new york dimension.
In fairness though, he did say Mega Drive in the beginning :P
I'm trying to get your attention by pre-emptivly comment on every video you watch before you watch it!
***** Confirmed, Larry is a master predictor. You play Blackjack by any chance? I'd like to hit a casino at some point
Genesis sounds cooler Mr. Bundy.
No, no it doesn't.
Harold Ramis is now researching chosts in the containment unit in heaven...
Austrailia's a melting pot? I've seen your bumperstickers.
Hard not to be with as hot as that country becomes.
I really liked Fable II and III (never played the first one). I mean they had their flaws and all but, I had a lot of fun with them.
In northern England people do say thanks when they get off the bus, I swear southerners just love being impolite.
Glasgow too.
I'm from the south and I'll say cheers to the bus driver when I get off.
Here in Arizona it's standard to say thank you. It's odd if you don't
I had the same confusion when I visited the states and shopkeepers asked me how I was. To begin with I was so confused, that I actually told them how my day was. once the jet leg wore off, I obviously realized that that it was an empty pleasantry, and that I was just supposed to say "fine thanks, how about you?"
