Whenever I get burnt out by my job or just life, I like to watch this movie. It reminds me that burnout isn’t permanent. It’s just a part of the process and I’ll probably find energy to do the things I love again.

As an artist and a writer, I take Ursula's words to heart. Whenever I hit a roadblock with my books or don't know what to draw, I don't push myself and force myself to write or draw, I just close my laptop and drop my pencil and relax. Watch some funny movies, go on a road trip, or make a puzzle. Anything to clear my mind and rebuild my inspirational spirit. And then after a while, my mind resets itself. Today, I have written nearly ten novels and published one of them (All It Takes Is One) while following this mantra, with my drawings now becoming integral to my job. Burn-out is real, it's harsh, and it's preventable. One cannot go all-out and work 24/7 365. Everyone deserves some time off. Tell your boss to watch this movie so they can understand what burn-out is all about!

I enjoyed your reaction. That senpai-witch is actually quite nice in Japanese version. She said like "That is my town. It isn't big but it's okay. Good luck for you too!" and it didn't sound spiteful at all. I like her so I feel so sad that English dub changed her like that. (Also the grand daughter didn't say "stupid pie". She just said "I don't like this pie." in Japanese...)

    • @dragonvert3633

IMO English --- maybe American --- dub for Japanese animation program has a tendency to exaggerate people's words and attitude as if to categorize them good ones and bad ones.

She says the same in the french version (except she says " It's not big but I feel like home ") and yes, she's a little warmer than here. Same for the grandaughter who says she hate the pie.

    Notes on things you said
    - Phil Hartman was the voice of Jiji in the English dub, best known as the voice of several Simpsons characters including Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz. Dubbing this in 1998 was one of his final roles before his untimely death. His Jiji has nearly three times as many lines as in the original script, mostly added wisecracks offscreen.
    - Kiki's new home has a mishmash of different mid-20th-century European city designs incorporated; the Ghibli staff artists went on a quickfire tour of the continent for inspiration. The majority of it though is based on the town of Visby in Sweden.
    - Japanese pumpkins (kabocha) are quite different to Western ones; they are smaller, dark green in colour, and a very different flavour to the squash-like ones you carve at Hallowe'en. So a herring-and-pumpkin pie wouldn't be so odd if that pumpkin were kabocha; it might well go better with the pungent fish flavour.
    - Kiki's loss of magic essentially reflects her loss of self-confidence, and indeed her sense of self in general; her rediscovery of it symbolises reinventing herself from a girl into a young woman. I'm interested to know what version of the English dub you watched; in the Japanese original Jiji never goes back to talking to her, which Miyazaki said was an innocence of childhood that she could never reclaim. This was also true in this English dub, yet in the one I watched on Netflix just a couple of weeks ago, Jiji did speak to her again in the final minutes.
Thanks so much for doing these Ghibli reactions again - I've been revisiting your previous ones throughout the year. I know you'll already have done and dusted this week's picks but I so hope one of them is "Whisper of the Heart" - a very similar film in terms of honing talent, battling insecurity, and finding a sense of purpose, only this time the protagonists are a writer and musician instead of a witch and a painter.
Looking forward to whatever you've picked nonetheless!

I can never get over what a master storyteller Miyazaki is, which is made all the more impressive given the wide range of stories he brings to life. I absolutely love every one of his films, and he is without a doubt, the undisputed GOAT of animation and honestly the most consistent and greatest filmmaker I can think of, while there are directors whose catalog of work I've enjoyed, he is the only one that I would passionately say, WATCH EVERYTHING!!! Even the ones you think you're not going to like or are certain isn't your cup of tea, because the man will prove you wrong and you'll be kicking yourself for not watching them sooner.

The song that flows in this ending is sung in Japanese like this.
When I was small there where gods
And they granted my wishes in mysterious ways
On mornings when you wake up feeling at ease
Miracles happen even when you grow up
Open the curtain wide let faint sunbeams shine through

The setting for Kiki's new town was modeled after Stockholm and Visby, Sweden, that Miyazaki visited years before he made Kiki's Delivery Service. Stockholm's "Old Town" has a clock tower that is very similar to the one in the film. There is a video somewhere on TH-cam pointing out all the real-life places that are similar to ones in the film. There is even a building that seems very similar to Osono's bakery shop.

I don't know if anyone noticed this, but in Ghibli movies like Kiki's Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky, there's a distinct difference in the English audio/dialogue in the streaming versions vs the video versions. In the streaming versions, there are large parts of English audio that are straight up cut out. This was supposedly done to make it more like the Japanese dub, but it sounds weird to me, and leaves whole parts of scenes awkwardly silent.

In the late 1960's, Hayao Miyazaki traveled to Sweden to get author Astrid Lindgren's permisson to make an anime adaption of Pippi Longstocking, so he visited her in Vimmerby but she said no because of her perception of cartoons were just violent slapstick (not blaming her since in the Golden Era of cartoons such as Warner Bros., MGM and Walter Lantz shorts contained a lot of violent slapstick). It wasn't compeletly fruitless as Miyazaki and co got to visit Stockholm and Visby on Gotland, which they used inspiration for the city where Kiki stays in this movie. There are even some shops in swedish text such as Gustaf Krantz Herrmode (Gustaf Krantz Faschion for Men) and Konst och Antik (Art and Antiques), and at one point there's a street sign saying "Klara Norra Ky" short for Klara Norra Kyrkogatan (Northern Klara Church Street). There were also research trups to Lisbon, Paris, San Francisco and Milan for the look of the city of Koriko.

I am 13 and this movie firstly it was first time watch and it was everything. Like a girl my age going out on an adventure to figure her self out find her self really and the message, all in all it was amazing and I am freezing. Literally my fans on and it's cold and hands are freezing and I know it's out context. So, you I don't think you should judge anything by which time and era it came out on cuz it was amazing and the bit with the grandma it got me cuz my grandma passed away 5 to nearly 6 years ago I was 7 when she passed away I never really got have any time with her or my grandad cuz he passed away way before like almost 10 years he didn't even got to see my younger siblings my little sister wasn't even born yet by that time. So, and like her growing as a person learning that like being a witch isn't all that she thought it is it's more then that. And I love the cat sorry I don't know how to spell the name properly and ahhhh just like we and mostly nowadays we depends so much on our parents and guidance that I could never ever imagine going on an adventure even in my 20's Idk. I wanna go out there see the world (well, not now after I am a little bit more grown up. Obviously not when I'm 13 but) my mom's always like not wanting that where's my dad's always a little bit more motivation, ya 'know. So yeah that was a long comment ofe analysing and reflecting my self with it. Can't wait to see tomorrow's movie after I wake up in the morning. Bye for now 🤗✨

This is such a sweet movie. Spirited Away is my favorite from Studio Ghibli...along with Whisper of the Heart. But this is in some ways the sweetest.
The city, as I understand it, is bases on Stockholm. But I have not yet been there so can't confirm. Closest I have been is Helsinki.
You mention Santorini...been there twice and love it. I proposed to my now ex-wife on Santorini overlooking the volcano. It was one of I think four volcanos we visited during our time together. Later we got paired tattoos...based on a mural of two birds at the site of ancient Thera on Santorini she got one bird and I got the other. It was a way of being disgustingly romantic while still assuring we would like the tattoos in case we ever broke up.

I would like to recommend this animation. This animation is also from ghibli, and its name is Grace of the fireflies. It is the only movie that I like but dare not watch for a second time. I recommend you to watch it and would like to see your reaction!
