Man oh man its a cool thing at 16 almost 17 to see a kid with that much talent on snare and any other instruments he plays... i still remember stumbling over his first tornado jay video. Keep up the good work kid.
As a parent, I'm so proud for you for Jay's accomplishments, It's like I've watched him grow up on youtube, Watched his hands grow and noticed his maturity. You are doiung a great job with him. High school will be a challenge altogether, but I know you will keep him focused. And his suit was pimped!
Wow I never had those kind of chops when I was in middle school. That kid is a stud! He will some day be making a ton of money, if that's what he wants to do. Keep up the amazing work and it will definitely pay off in the long run.
2:41 , such a solid consistent speed and volume. pure control. i am so amazed on how much he has improved! you will go soo far with this jay! and if you ever start brining some of the skills onto a kit... i cannot WAIT !
idk why anyone would hate on Jay he can make DCI with no problem especially since in the description he wasnt warmed up or used to those sticks and he did all that wow haters out there get ready to see the next best drummer in the world Jay will go very far with his skills.
If APA actually makes a legitimate drumline, jay should be in the snare line. BTW i was at the APA drum camp this past summer and word went around the students there and i ended up on this channel. Awesome
Thanks Val! For those that may not know, Val, hvdrums, is the man to talk to if you have questions or want to know more about HV Custom Drums. He makes/customizes the drums. Jay is playing a hvdrum in this vid and in some of his other videos...great drum! Val, Jay just took it out the case and performed, no time for tuning for the venue, checking the tension, or any adjusting; the drum still had a nice sound after months in the case.
Jay, you're a great drummer! It's very difficult to make a snare solo entertaining and not just chops. It takes a sense of humor and needs to just be fun at times. Its VERY easy to be anonymous and criticize too. You seem to deal with the pressure well. JUST HAVE FUN.. Congrats! I marched snare in the Velvet Knights in 94 and split the center in 95 under Tom Float and Paul Rennick. My HS program was not so good and it took me three years of auditioning at VK before I made the line. I competed
really loved it. great, great sound. really distinguishing his sense of rhythm. =] keep'em coming? he seems to enjoy the drums too which is great! good luck and great job!
@DCIdrumdude Drum shells are sound chambers. Ventilation/them square hole thingies make the drum louder because it gives the sound energy a place to escape, as opposed to just being trapped between two drum heads with tiny or no ventilation that's typically found on a snare drum. Free floating head would not be loud and there would be no bottom head/snare response because the energy would just fly out err-where.
@oldchops yo bro this sick!!! im 17 and have been playing snare for 12 years and i learned how to do this solo when i was 15....this is hella sick though keep up the good work bro :)
Definitely a talent beyond just speed. Amazing rhythms and articulation. I would pay to see this live! I can't believe this hasn't gone Viral. Does he have his own you tube channel, I'd love to subscribe.
@jonah12321 This is Jay. Yes, there is a lot of dirt in it. That was the best that I was able to do given circumstances, plus that is really tough solo. I had fun with it and the crowd enjoyed it. Thanks, man!
...either that or it's as though the parent is saying, "oh you think AT's good? He's not even warmed up!" or "wait til you see what he can REALLY do!" All I'm saying is that I'm a performer and perfotmers know that you'll never play at 100% every single time. Just continue working with him and let the kid's talent speak for itself. It speaks volumes alone already.
Between attending various music/drumming camps, playing in honor bands, playing in one of the local youth symphonies, competitions, and working with various instructors, Jay has all the exposure he needs now. Jay is still 13 years old, but being that he will be 14 soon, he would have been eligible to march with some DCI/DCA groups. But Jay is still too small, and between that and not having marching experience, likely would have had some trouble with the physical aspects of marching. Thanks!
He plans to do both this upcoming marching season. He plans to march as a percussionist and focus on saxophone in the classroom. Jay's plans on earning a spot in the All-West Honor Band as a saxophone player next year. In TN you can only audition on one instrument and Jay has already earned a spot in the top junior high band for three (3) consecutive years. So, at this point another spot in percussion, junior or senior high band, would not be as significant of an accomplishment for Jay. Thanks!
I think that low end control is partly due to lots of playing with smaller and different mallets and sticks that multi-faceted percussionists use from time to time, and playing lots of advanced rudimental stuff over the years with very small and/or concert snare sticks- not rushing to full-size marching sticks. Jay just moved up to indoor size marching sticks for rudimental snare drumming. Jay probably will not use full-size outdoor marching sticks until this coming Summer or later.
You need to go march a great drum corp!! Like BD or santa clara. I marched bluecoats for two years and came back playing better than i ever thought i could.
Man, thanks for those very kind words. Believe it or not, Jay has some haters, as the young folks say, out there that are not rooting for him, even some that we know...sad.
@slowblood99 He is on the snare line, but not center. It takes more than just chops and playing ability to be center in a line with returning players. Thanks for the compliment though!
@isiah1977 No, he is playing Skyscraper, by Danny Raymond Jr. Being that Jay has had private lessons from you, and has played this for you on several occassions, I am somewhat surprised by your question.
@Monst3r199 You can pick up a "stock" version of a marching snare on ebay at a reasonable price. The last one I bought was a Pearl EFX in "like new" condition. I got the drum, harness, and hard shell padded case for $250. The drum in this video has been customized and looks great! Personally, I haven't found modern marching snare drums to sound good with my drum kits. Great for drum corps, and for dexterity excersizes, but too much crack to translate well into a drumset, in my opinion.
His last year in middle school, huh? I'm a junior in college (with world class WGI experience, mind you) and I don't have snare drum chops anywhere NEAR that. Really makes me ask myself, "Self...what have you done with YOUR life lately?"... :p Ha ha, in all seriousness, you two keep up the great work. :)
The schools that we are considering have corps. style marching bands. I would consider a school with a show-style band if the music program, particularly the percussion part, was complete and if the school was in proximity to my home. But with all that said, our first priority is a strong and competitive academic program.
@Sebastianstripper I understand most of what you are saying. Yes, he is progressing a little slower as time goes by- that applies to everyone eventually. Yes, some of his "drumline bros can catch up fast." Some already have, some will soon, and some won't, but most are still a little older than Jay. I have to disagree with your comment, "...what a shame." It is a good thing to see players progress, and even catch up to or surpass Jay's level of play.
No, Jay will be preparing for high school marching band this coming Summer. Since his middle school does not have a marching band, that will be first time marching in a band. As of now, Jay plans on marching initially in a DCI corps. in 2011 or 2012...smaller corps; with a major corps. possibly in 2012 or down the road.
I marched center snare for the colts in 08 and then for the cavaliers in 09 and to any of you nitwits saying Jay cant play on any competitive dci corps, then you are naive and need to practice.
@imakery You sure know how to hate. Dead dream or not, Jay is talented. And he smiles while showing off his talent. I would of hated my Dad if he pushed me to play an instrument but now I hate him for not doing so. I would of loved to shred like this. Good job Jay
@Chrisidkobannon Yeah.. Right. Don't try and take away from that kickass solo. Post your own video if you can do it. You make it sound like it's soooo easy.
Where will Jay be attending high school? I ask because the Band director/Percussion instructor must be thrilled with the prospect of having jay in their band program.
Very impressive drum solo. You have a great future ahead of you, I assure you. Your music will take you great places. Keep on playing, friend. How old are you anyway? You should definitely go drum corps, it would be a great experience and I can tell you certainly have what it takes. Cheers!
Man oh man its a cool thing at 16 almost 17 to see a kid with that much talent on snare and any other instruments he plays... i still remember stumbling over his first tornado jay video. Keep up the good work kid.
This kid is something special I can tell you that, damn prodegy. Keep it up and we all will be whatching Jay on Television one day!
Definitely a talent beyond just speed. Amazing rhythms and articulation. I would pay to see this live!
As a parent, I'm so proud for you for Jay's accomplishments, It's like I've watched him grow up on youtube, Watched his hands grow and noticed his maturity. You are doiung a great job with him. I dream of just being able to play decent double strokes! This is truly amazing! What a talented young man!
Jay, keep it up man. You're gettin better and better every time i check you out.
AWESOME job Jay!!! Looking more and more comfortable with each new video! Enjoyed watching you play your solo immensely. Keep up the great work!!!!
that was sick!!!! ive never heard snare as good as that
Dude. This is crazy. This boy has a gift.
idk why anyone would hate on Jay he can make DCI with no problem especially since in the description he wasnt warmed up or used to those sticks and he did all that wow haters out there get ready to see the next best drummer in the world Jay will go very far with his skills.
this is amazing...extremely talented what a kid im a first chair drummer as a 8th grader but this....this is flat out beast
amazing. i really want to march snare next year so ive been practicing a lot and this is inspirational
Thanks for your extremely kind words and for taking time to watch Jay's vids over the years! Be on the look-out for a new saxophone vid next.
jay, i really hope you enjoy drumming. Obviously you have talent. If you love drumming as much as I hope you are living the dream. Keep it up!!!
If APA actually makes a legitimate drumline, jay should be in the snare line.
BTW i was at the APA drum camp this past summer and word went around the students there and i ended up on this channel. Awesome
This kid is amazing! Don't let this be his last perfomance! His way to goo!! If I was him I wouldn't stop playin..
ive honestly never seen better talent. that is amazing. jay. when u make it to DCI (which of course u will) ima get tickets to c u lol
Well done Jay! That was excellent.
he'll probably make it in a world class corps in 2012 easily...
We're all rooting for him!
Thanks Val! For those that may not know, Val, hvdrums, is the man to talk to if you have questions or want to know more about HV Custom Drums. He makes/customizes the drums. For a second I coulda sworn Danny himself was playing it. Nice job Jay and his Father!!!
Congrats!

Brilliant... Really enjoyed it...
WOW! That was AWSOME!!
@oldchops That's awesome...i see Jay didn't put it to waste...i can only imagine how proud you must be...
dude you are beast!!! i really wanna work harder on my snare skills now. but ill never be as good as you!
thanks for making these vids.
jay is very talented
Gotta love those HV drums, they just have less rebound but totally worth the sound
This kid should be in more than a talent show... Maybe some sort of percussion stand off
damn, kids these days need to know what true talent is...
aka: THIS
keep it up jay! :D
if this is him cold, I hate to see what he can do after practice/warm-ups and comfortable sticks. Dude, unreal man. 10 stars!
Great job Jay! That is scary good! Keep it up!
I liked when he went into the single handed 16th note stroke.that was LIVE.!!I love to do that on snare
jesus! he's choppin out like a beast!! O.o i want his skills!!
i can play, but I learned a couple things from watching this vid
!!!THANKS!!!
good job by the way
:)
Jay... you're amazing...
The hat completes the performance...haha
This is awesome :D
@oldchops yo bro this sick!!! im 17 and have been playing snare for 12 years and i learned how to do this solo when i was 15....this is hella sick though keep up the good work bro :)
I hope I get to run into him one day if he tries out for WGI or DCI some day haha. Major respect man.
Only a "second" though.....Danny Raymond is a monster amongst monsters, about as good or as good, as there is out there.
Definitely a talent beyond just speed. Amazing rhythms and articulation. I would pay to see this live! I can't believe this hasn't gone Viral. Does he have his own you tube channel, I'd love to subscribe.
Thanks, Dragon1....! We just try to support Jay as best we can.
@jonah12321 This is Jay. Yes, there is a lot of dirt in it. That was the best that I was able to do given circumstances, plus that is really tough solo. I had fun with it and the crowd enjoyed it. Thanks, man!
Oh. My. God. AWESOME!!!!!!
Wish I was as good as you, good job man!

I bet his high school marching band is happy to have him
I'm speechless.
Dang, if only the video was clearer I could follow most of it, good job, thumbs up all aroud
OMG!! Wow! this kid is awesome!!

@123Kerrick he's performing a solo written by Danny Raymond jr. called Skyscraper. Read the description.
That was awasome

@tenorchops04 Mr. Raymond sent Jay an autographed copy. Jay was so excited!
@Sebastianstripper I understand most of what you are saying. Yes, he is progressing a little slower as time goes by- that applies to everyone eventually. @watchcoww Jay was one of three snare drummers on his line this past marching season.
wow, he has amazing chops for his age......
He's so grown up!!! :3
DOUBLE TRADITIONAL ALL THE WAY.

@Dunham617 It was not judged, just entertainment for a general audience. Thanks for watching!
Holly cow!
The boy can play!
Damn!
O.o
I marched center snare for the colts in 08 and then for the cavaliers in 09 and to any of you nitwits saying Jay cant play on any competitive dci corps, then you are naive and need to practice.
REAL NICE! wish i was that good at that age, im that good now tho, being in the 10th grade, but thats amazing, oh and 1st comment
You make it sound like it's soooo easy.
haha niceee Jay, there we go!
@kimsdrummer ya Ik but what are some good things to practice to build them up
@zzzzzushi I think he's better than almost ALL middle schoolers... he was better than most highschoolers when he was 3 or 4 years younger than now.
wow! It is so damn good!
@EvanBidney94 @EvanBidney94 Yes, they are rectangular cuts to let the drum project and have increased snare response.
Where will Jay be attending high school? I ask because the Band director/Percussion instructor must be thrilled with the prospect of having jay in their band program.
amazing
wish I had hands like that in middle school.
THAT KID GOT SOME SKILLZ
Well well well. Look at me from years long past...
@MySkeptic Will do and thanks for the advice!
He should definitely tryout for a drum corps once he becomes a junior or senior in high school. He definitely has the skills.
his hands look like they're ninja fast :O he's great :)
His favorite is SCV...I do not know if it's the music, drumming, style, or the hats, LOL! He likes Phantom, Devils, Cavies, Coats and others, as well.
so has he made a decision about his instrument of choice in the upcoming marching season? sax, or percussion?
@oldchops True, true. Lol but I can definitely see him in some drum corps somewhere as center snare! :D
dude ur a beast...stick wit the drums n u could do sum amazing things wit urself
yeah i know i play snare in my band and we are rly good we hav a good drum director...but this kids godlike
Very impressive drum solo. You have a great future ahead of you, I assure you. Your music will take you great places. Keep on playing, friend. How old are you anyway? You should definitely go drum corps, it would be a great experience and I can tell you certainly have what it takes. Cheers!
DCI Champ right there.
Yeah, for a second. That second was before I looked up and saw Jay!! lol.
