Cap will always be a concern for all teams and I agree that PLD should not be making more than $8M. In terms of fitting all these players under the cap, it shouldn’t be a concern. The argument for Leonard vs Michkov is that Leonard may command less salary while providing equal value when looking at both offense and defense. If your top 4 players in Suzuki/Caufield/Dach/PLD are making $8M, Slafkovsky and Leonard in the $5-6M range, two of Guhle/Hutson making top pairing money, let’s say $7M each, Mailloux making $6M and Xhekaj making $4.5M… this is pretty typical of a very well balanced payroll where none of these players are overpaid. That’s the key in managing the cap. It isn’t about having too many good players, it’s about not overpaying any players and extracting max value. If you do end up with too many good players, then you trade one away. That may need to happen with one of Guhle/Hutson/Xhekaj/Harris. I don’t think you can look at the Habs lineup right now and not say we have too many top 6 players.
