    Your results appear to show that the best speed-up comes from 'Fast-forward' with the black and yellow chevrons. Renders the o/c stuff obsolete!

    Theoretical improvement, based on frequency:
    1.5GHz: 0% (default turbo)
    1.7GHz: 13%
    2.0GHz: 33%
    2.29GHz: 53%
    Sysbench improvement (by speed):
    1.7GHz: 13%
    2.0GHz: 33%
    2.29GHz: 29%
    Kdenlive 15s 1080p render improvement (again by speed):
    1.7GHz: 10%
    2.0GHz: 27%
    2.29GHz: 33%

      So technically 2ghz is best as long as you have a good cooling system and you have a high quality power supply.

      pretty much 2.0ghz is the safe and stable limit as long as you have at least a passive cooling solution and a good power supply. I've test 2.1 and I get problems with stability, even it makes any device connected to the usb 3.0 port disable my wifi.

      @@ExplainingComputers I calculated slightly differently from the OP's table.
      Instead of using 1.5 GHz as the baseline for each improvement, I used the previous speed or timing versus the new.
      Results follow:
      Frequency Increase Sysbench Improved Kdenlive Improved Comments
      1.5 GHz 0.00% 237.4 0.00% 225 0.00% Baseline (stock settings)
      1.7 GHz 13.33% 209.4 11.79% 204 9.33% Prime calcs are CPU-bound. Kdenlive render is not, shows less improvement .
      2.0 GHz 17.65% 177.9 15.04% 177 13.24% Further improvement on both, but still not equal to increased CPU speed %.
      2.1 GHz 5.00% 184.7 -3.82% 169 4.52% Odd result with Sysbench, may have reached limit. Back down to 2.0 GH.

    Incredible how far Pis have gone. I remember the early days when a 900MHz overclock of the single-core RPi 1 is considered really daring. Great vídeo as always.

    I looked at the video on overclocking a pi 4 . Liked the way you added an m.2 ssd , found this on Amazon thought this might be of interest Geekworm Raspberry Pi 4 X862 M.2 NGFF 2280/2260/2242/2230 SATA SSD Storage Expansion Board with USB 3.1 Jumper for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Only .I tried it and it works fine for me . keep up the good work .

    Other TH-cam channels the focus on SBC’s that have done overclocking videos on Pi. They did a good job explaining how to overclock.
    Today we have a your review and a lot of the questions I had are now answered! The way you explain it makes much more sense and a lot easier for users to follow.

    I set my alarm clock on top of my Raspberry Pi and the Pi didn't run any faster...neither did the clock. This was, yet again, another interesting video. Looking forward to your next one!

    I have found that beyond 2ghz I have to overvolt to 8 in order not to have problems. I also backed down to 2 just because I don't like pushing right to the edge for limited gain. I'm surprised to see Kdenlive not fully utilize CPU power. I use Handbrake quite a bit and it pushes the CPU to the Max, about the same as the stress test. I've been running my Pi with 64bit Raspban Beta off a 1TB USB3 SSD and it works perfectly. The latest upgrades have fixed a ton of problems and I think it's getting close to being ready for prime time. Love the video, great job as always.

    I've always run my Pi4 4gig at 2ghz. It's been at that for the whole year and no problems. I've tried many things on it, but currently in use as my home server with OMV5 on it. With good active cooling i have no problems at 2ghz with everything i've tried.

    Hi Chris. I love these RPi4 OC videos! I have a Machine Learning project on a Raspberry Pi 4, and when training the network I find that it crashes after about 5-15 minutes of model training when running at 2.0Ghz and 6 voltage. It is so far bullet-proof stable at 1.8Ghz and 4 voltage, and tested on 6 different Pis. For some really strenuous tasks over long periods, 2.0Ghz may actually be too much. My early tests showing that 1.9+Ghz work if I use only integer mathematics, and remove floating point model precision, but needs more testing.
    I wonder if the test would work on a 15+ minute duration workload, and if testing a different function will matter. I think testing where it finally starts crashing we can start learn even more from here!

    I'm still running RPI 2. It still does what I need for my purpose for nearly 3 years uptime. The only downtime is updating for security. I still enjoy watching your videos on the latest hardware and upgrades for if and when my PI dies. Then when that time comes I'll know just what to do, thanks :)

    Another great video, thanks! After watching dozens of your videos, I’ve taken the plunge and am following along on my new rPi 4. One thing that I noticed was that you can r-click on the CPU Usage widget in the tray and use the option CPU Usage Monitor Settings to change the foreground & background colors of the graph. The ramp up & down is easier for me to spot with bright foreground color.

    I have used a rotary burr tool to modify the original stick on heat sinks so that at least the other two will fit alongside the Ice Tower. This has allowed for additional passive cooling inside the enclosure I use and has made some noticeable difference instability under heavy loads such as video encoding and transmission.

    No problems at all with good cooling

    i've been overclocking my Pi4 since day 2 I believe and always to 2GHz with a Flirc (yes, passive cooling) case. I've done many stress tests and only got it to throttle when using CPUBurn..but again, passive cooling. One thing useful I'd like to mention, though all the Pi overclocking videos I saw so far are using 6 for over_voltage (with 2GHz) ,, I use 5 - and it works just fine & stable

    Just as you said Chris, I've found that even the mildest GPU overclocks can cause stability issues. Often best left as standard..

      Overclocked since October with my first Pi4 2100-2125, GPU anywhere between 700-775. Over voltage 6. It never ever took 800. Completely stable at 775 for months, any task. Typing this on my second Pi4, settings are 2150, GPU 800, over voltage 6. Pi4 no.2 is newer and doesn't get as hot, also has a larger heatsink with no case. I think at this point all the glitches I've had could be attributed to individual emulator settings, and Vulkan when I tried it. The worst thing I've done to my Pi4 seems to be a bad SSD. Trying to make it work without a PS for the drive itself on a drive it wasn't happy with. It still works, but there's permanent noise on the USB ports, all of them, and barely noticeable bands on the screen. Only see them on a plain background (Android.) Not sure of the cause it didn't seem to happen instantaneously. Could also be from setting the over voltage too high experimenting. I think it was the drive though. That Pi still works otherwise same.

      There is a way to overclock without overclocking. Somewhere on here there is an interesting video from a "Overclock Champion." They way he does it is by using liquid nitrogen. The contacts in the CPU become super conductors, and the performance/speed just starts going on on the chip.

      @@GeekBoy03 Superconductors at liquid nitrogen temperatures? I highly doubt it, only a few special materials can superconduct at that relatively high temperature, and CPUs have none of those (as they're not useful at room temperature). Conductivity is improved, but it's not superconducting.

    I would recommend after the ovetclocking edits that in the terminal before reboot use:
    sync
    Then:
    sudo sync
    This will force any incomplete functions to complete before you reboot, so as not to lose anything nor have it improperly apply.

    Having done a fair amount of overclocking on a standard desktop platform, the next thing I would suggest is to start to dial the overclock in. Normally you would slowly start to reduce the maximum voltage to the point where the system becomes unstable. You then go to the first next working voltage value where the system has no stability issues. This means that you are getting the best possible overclock while not pumping a larger than needed voltage to get a good stable overclock. This will not only allow your system to run cooler because more voltage means higher temps but also you are stressing your silicone less and potentially increasing its lifespan. In the past the yard stick for a working overclock was 24 hours stable in Prime95.
    One thing to note here, if you dont care about overclocking, you may well be able to benefit from undervolting the system. From the factory they will have a default 'working' config which goes onto all of the machines. This doesn't matter if it is the worst chip or a golden sample processor, it will run those settings no matter what. However your system might be able to run at a lower voltage and stay completely stable. This means that the temperatures at a stock speed can come down even further than they already are, as your pushing even less voltage through the processor. However again the further down you go, the more unstable the system gets as at somepoint the system won't be getting enough power to stay stable. At that point, go to the last working voltage.

    Hello again Chris, I'm running the Raspberry PI OS and noticed that if you click on the Raspberry icon then Preferences then Raspberry PI configuration then Performance. There is a GPU memory field that you can change. I changed mine a few times and settled at 128. I ran a TH-cam video of a guy processing a tuna fish and had 2 frame drops after 5000 frames at the 1080p setting. Also I overclocked the cpu to 2.0GHz. I have the PI 4 in a little case with heat sinks and a small fan that you can hardly feel but works fine. CPU temp went up to 68C running your overclock script file. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. You could also "sudo raspi-config" to do the same thing

    Today I was overclocking my GPU on Linux just for fun and one thing you made me paying attention after watching this video was , the jumps of frequency my card was doing. Like, over 1400Mhz is about 140 fps with a temperature kind 89°c on my testing. Maybe, trying to cool more could gain more fps. Anyway, thanks to remind me other things we need to check during a overclocking. I wish you could show better your system cooling for that experiment. It might give me some ideas :) See yeah

    Love your videos and you style. I have a Pi400 running at 2.2GHz and it is fantastic, temp is always around 47`c under-load in standard use, I have had it punch up to the high 50s at time though. Can't stand anything slower now, it is really noticeable, lol.

    I have read that if you go more than 6 on the overvolt it will trigger a fuse that tells the PI foundation if you try to warranty a broken PI. My PI is currently set at 1800 cpu / 600 gpu / ov 6. I just have one of the Canakit cases with a super small fan and aluminum heatsinks (I cut the "fan grill" off) and I never see more than 50 max. Never used the overclock section just added the three lines to the end. However now I use Commander PI that can do it with a UI. Another great and honest video! Thanks Professor!

    This is exactly my experience, too! 2.Ghz with Ice Tower: No Problem at all... Everything above is unstable and (even with higher cpu_voltage) lead to unexpected behavior like reboots.

    FWIW I've been running a Pi 4 4gig and a Pi 4 8gig at 2ghz in the FLIRC aluminium case (in both instances) - temperatures rarely ever approach 60deg under heavy constant load for hours of processing, typically it's well below throttle. I can feel the case getting a little warm but nothing to even be remotely concerned about; the solution is particularly good as it's passive (cool/quiet/dust-free), the main drawback with these cases is the lack of GPIO access once installed.

    Thanks for the great video Chris, I just bought my first Pi (4B 8Gb) and now have it running at 2Ghz with the new (horizontal) ICE cooler. Interestingly I've discovered that thermal paste is crucial to achieving the 177 second sysbench and that clearly some form of CPU throttling is occurring way short of the expected temperature. Waiting for my thermal paste to arrive from Amazon, I wanted to try the cooler anyway with the pad to see what it would do. At 1.5Ghz, sysbench ran in the expected 239s and hit a peak of 36 degrees, this relatively low temp encouraged me to try tentatively overclocking. Gradually reached 2Ghz and ran the sysbench without exceeding 44 degrees - however it took 213 seconds. CPUfreq frontend was reading 2000, but the calculations took longer. Yesterday the paste arrived, I applied it and re-fitted the cooler. At 2Ghz sysbench ran in the 177 seconds you achieved, without exceeding 34 degrees. Based on everything I've heard about the throttling, the difference between 34 and 44 degrees was quite an eye opener!

    The Sysbench improvement between stock and 2GHz was a BIG one. 1min off Kdenlive's not that much, but considering it's nothing like a massively powerful machine it's still very considerable.
    This simply proves that modern-day ARM is still just like Pentium in the old days: clock matters more than the architecture. Nowadays it's the exactly opposite for x86.

    Worth noting if you have hit the 2ghz mark. Try turning down the voltage as lowering it will decrease load temperatures and decrease wear on the chip. You should never use force_turbo as that forces full voltage through the chip all the time, which will decrease its lifespan as the high voltage under low loads erodes away the silicon.

    What works on a desktop computer may not work on the Pi, but you could try overclocking the ram and tightening the timings to make the Pi work even faster.

    I use my raspberry pi 4 on 2147mhz with the ice tower low profile and a case i made out of wood plus a 13inch 1080p laptop panel with a driver board. The distro im using is manjaro xfce . I use Gimp, libreoffice and firefox mainly for schoolwork and retroarch for gaming. Much better than those sirup slow chromebooks.

    Great content (as always). Even at max overclock, the ice tower keeps the Pi cold. One might even say, the ice tower is overkill. Could you show us if other cheaper fans and Pi4 cases you showed in the past (especially the ArgonOne) also allow a proper Pi overclocking too.

      I have a CanaKit case that came as a starter set. Just 3 small heatsinks and a tiny fan. I cut out the "fan grill" because it blocked the air flow. At stock it idles at 35 and max of 45. Overclocked to 1800 at overvolt 6 it idles at 40 and max at 50. Basic cooling with moving air will go a long way.

    Hi Christopher. Nice video.
    The governor doesn't always show the correct clockpseeds. This because there is a closed-sourced OS Threadx running on the Raspberry. That has full control of your pi, you just can change things with arguments. But what is done in Threadx isn't what is shown in Raspberry PiOS. I once made a long video about that. That's one reason Raspberry's ain't my favorites. To get the real clockspeed do "vcgencmd measure_clock arm"
    That'll show the true cpu clockspeed.
    I yesterday made a video about running windows programs on the Raspberry Pi 4 with BOX86/Wine in TwisterOS. Also made videos of windows games on the RPi4. It is awesome to be able to do this. Maybe a subject for you, TwisterOS. Is Raspberry Pi OS with tons of cool features. You can make the desktop look like old windows, or ios or anything you want. Overclocking is done with a tool, no more editing textfiles. Tons of gaming emulators preinstalled, and Box86 + wine.
    Now I want it on a more potent board like the RK3399s or even the Odroid N2+. But for that one I'll have to wait for good open source gpu drivers.

    Did you try commander pi? It's a really handy tool that shows uou ingo about your pi, but it also has a overclocking settings wiyh a gui
