After running a s364.5 non VGT in my 6.0 for the last couple years and an s363 in my boss's I know that this is not the case..... Yes, if you have bad tuning you can make it really Smokey but with proper tuning. I would argue to say it that they could be nearly emissions compliant, especially with stock injectors.... Both turbo spool really well. Maybe not quite as fast as The vgt did and both are way more trouble free... Very streetable and tow really well
I have an S364, and I did it for the sound. My next move is a compound setup with a VGT. I miss the low-end power and not smoking people out when I need to pass. The OD lockout helps, but I am ready for an upgrade. S2R with a S475 and 190/30.
I love the sound of non vgt, but those are valid points 😂 And I completely agree with the comments on rpm. I really don't understand why so many people are so afraid of rpms, especially in a 6.0. The trucks designed for it, just put the pedal down and go. It'll be fine, they're really not meant to be lugged out anyways. It's harder on parts too.
Wow, an employee of KC Turbos says you should run a VGT because "reasons". Imagine that! Also, and likely unrelated: KC Turbos primarily sells VGTs which are 2-3X more expensive (and less reliable) than traditional fixed-vane turbos. Coincidence?
Replaced POS factory turbo on my LML, went with baby 362sxe. Didnt really add any power but eliminated the random boost spiking past 60psi under load and blowing boots off. No codes, low mileage etc. Drives like stock mostly, lea e it in drive and forget about it while dragging momentum toy hauler. I 100% miss the exhaust brake. Never really gets past 1200 towing degrees unless its not in tow haul
I’ll never run a non-VGT on my truck. I’m just not out there to milk every single horsepower I can get, plus, where I’m a stickler for super clean exhaust, a VGT turbo just fits my driving style more.
Conversation lost credibility at saying exhaust brakes are useless, sorry. Clearly you've never had to crawl down a steep grade in a service truck in 1st or 2nd gear to keep it from running away and riding the brakes the whole way. Around here continous 8/9% grades for 5-10km and 12%+ are not uncommon on highways, never mind the wild stuff you see off highway. I'm looking forward to the exhaust brake in my new 6.7 and if I was keeping the 7.3 it would absolutely be getting an aftermarket brake installed.
Eh. I'll take a PROPERLY sized fixed vane over a vgt. I have a t3 s363/65 on my 6.7 cummins and it stays cooler under load and drives just as good as my vgt did. The problem I see is all of these dudes throwing massive s400s on stock fueled trucks. That must be miserable.
Sounds about right, Street use VGT, Race use Non VGT, Or Compounds for the best of both worlds.
Well said!

A 475 over an S2R with 190s will be such a fun truck!

Great information! It helped me determine the next big mods on the rig. Thanks!
Maybe do a feature on the stage 3 488 truck. Sounds a little crazy honestly, at least to tow heavy with.
Very little actual fact here. The only reason a non-VGT is smokey is with bad tuning. Personal experience.

@@BruceMyersLBZ yep, non-vgt for the win 💪 the only thing you loose is exhaust brake
Non vgt= better flow, vgt= better spool and better for towing
Simple breakdown, and correct sir!
Does this conversation only pertain to 6.0? Or, is this information good for the 6.7 as well?
This applies to 6.7 turbos also, since they too are VGT turbos!

For sure! Driving a VGT turbo "Correctly" can pretty much eliminate any rolling coal.
