Actually, ketosis is for everyone, at least intermittently throughout life. People are designed to fast for days at a time with depleted glycogen stores. Also, unless you have a health condition, it is silly to think you need a doctor to monitor your fasting. People are designed to fast.

People eating 6 times a day is weird to me. Fasting isn't that bad, if it is, you're addicted to sugar.

When you watch old black and white movies, those skinny people were eating butter and drinking full fat milk - especially their kids. They ate a portion of meat. They ate mostly whole grains in breads and crackers, the bleached alternatives were just starting to appear. They ate fruits and vegetables, including potatoes. When they did drink juice in the morning it was in a small “juice glass.” They were just starting to add the processed foods to the stores. Fast food restaurants were just getting started. People drank soda pop as an occasional treat, not daily, and certainly not with every meal. They ate reasonable portions at meals. Snacks were a treat, not a way of life. I believe the diet mentality started appearing more at that time too, but nothing like now. People need to be reasonable about food. No food eaten in moderation that’s from its natural source (the earth) is “bad”. Processed food (not food that has just been blended and/or cooked, but food that has had its structure altered) is bad. They take nutrients out of food and then re-add nutrients. Does that make sense to you?
Sure, people who are overweight can lose weight on Keto. Fasting can be helpful too. But to be reasonable: you don’t 100% cut out any food that you have available, you’re not allergic to and that’s basically in its natural state. You just eat it in moderation. There’s a wide variety of natural food on earth, with a wide variety of nutritional value, not to mention flavors that enhance life. If you don’t need to lose weight, don’t have diabetes or food allergies why would you go on a diet? Just strictly avoid processed foods!
God created food for our enjoyment and health. Mankind is ruining it by altering it, and polluting it.

I want to do either fasting, ketogenic or carnivore and even combine since I don't want to only eat meat constantly.it feels gross as well as boring. But the more I learn or see videos I get Confused by all the various info to do it safely and correctly

      Plant based?
Horrible advice. Especially if someone is trying to build muscle, which is a staple of ACTUAL health and longevity.
Our body uses plant Protien much different than animal based, and there's just no comparison.
Meat and the right vegetables, are the ticket. If, again, you want to be ACTUALLY healthy.
People might not like the idea of eating meat, morally etc, but our ancestors did this for thousands of years, which means that's what our bodies are built for.
When we take a body that has evolved over thousands of years by doing something, and do the exact opposite, it doesn't produce good results.
The same as if our ancestors NEVER ate meat and ONLY ate vegetables forever, and we started giving it meat, it would wreck our system, because it's not built for that.
I can guarantee that your ancestors didn't just eat fruit. They hunted, as we have all of human history.
Lastly, if you look at studies where meat is "bad" for you, it's because people are again, eating naturally. Cows that are given steroids, hormones, antibiotics etc, are not what our ancestors were eating.
Good, grass fed, grass finished meat. Or rather regular, real natural meat, causes superior health (Along with healthy vegetables if you'd like, but not absolutely required) compared to plant based diets alone, are night and day.
PS. Animals that are fed what they're naturally supposed to eat, are eating plants. So when we eat animal, we're eating what they've eaten as well.
So if you want to be healthy, and get what your body needs, eat healthy animal meat, and there's literally no better diet.
The most medically studied diet on earth, that produces markers that we can actually measure, is the ketogenic diet.

A couple days a week, it can be very helpful for overweight people to eat low calorie, low fat, and lean protein. This works according to Maria Emmerich and Dr. Ted Naiman. But the rest of the week use a ketogenic diet. During the low calorie, lean protein days, stubborn body fat is burned , but muscle is spared.

Hi! I have intuitively gone into ketosis and fasted for 4 days a few times now- I did some research after the first time but i initially found this through some quiet time and began intuitively - I began changing my calories to mostly fat and slowly ate less and less until I fasted for 4 days - I stopped working out and was very gentle with myself but the mental clarity I discovered was so precise that I knew I was on the right track- I did start to research about what I was doing as I wanted to make sure I was not harming myself and fortunately found some great info- some from you! Thank you- I fast approx 4 times a year now for 4 days and always feel so great. Thanks for teaching us, thanks for supporting extreme (ish) diets and thanks for sharing. I look forward to hearing more from you on this subject.

Went from 0.7 to 4.4 last week in 30 hours by dry fasting , 4 sets of weight lifting , one hour powerwalk.. Started with 3 days of keto food. Dont know what was the key thing. Guessing it was mesuring ketones 1 hour after after a tuff workout.
The bodys bloodsugerproduction would maybe lower amounts of ketones a few hours later .

If following the slow carb diet, wouldn’t you be going through keto flu like symptoms every week because the high carb intake cheat day? Because essentially the rest of the week you’re not eating much carbs. So Curious

    • @mirudrag
      @mirudrag 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think it depends on the causes of the keto flu, which have not been scientifically determined yet.
The gut bacteria is formed, sugar withdrawal should not be very high, and the metabolism is already adjusted.
So keto fly symptoms should not be triggered every time after a cheat day, (though I do not believe in cheat days myself, as I consider for myself keto to be more of a lifestyle than a diet).

Tim, I've had a few people prominent and average Joe that have recorded and tracked their glucose and ketones on a very high protein diet. I'm aware there are certain exceptions. Pre and post measurements after an extremely high protein meal and this went on for 30 days, with protein little to no effect on ketosis. As someone said before GNG is demand driven and require certain pre-requisites for that to happen. You're more likely rip the back bone out of triglyceride to be used in GNG before it's used out of a protein and from the information I've read this happens easily in an extended fasted state or under intense physical activity and/or in addition to being fasted. It would be nice if you could do some digging on this and confirm it as well. I thought the same for the longest fucking time until I did more research on it since I could never get or find a straight answer from anyone.

  • @self-purpose

I have been reading about, and researching, the aboslute best diet for myself. My diet includes superfood greens and berries. I eat according to the best foods for my medical issues. I am fit, and appear the to be a fine weight; however, I see that I can lose 20lbs if I want to go to the absolute minimum I can weigh while just barely staying within the healthy weight zone (actually a goal of mine to reduce weight on the hips and lower blood pressure). So why buy/ eat oils, fats, meats, etc for the sake of ketosis? I let nature use my fat, which is what she thruout evolution. Lots of saturated fat is generally a marker for athero issues. Even Dom said in a podcast regarding his blood tests, that his inflammation was fabulously low, but his LDLs were pretty high when eating ketogenic. Dr Attia says that LDLs aren't the best markers but that high levels usu/often not good. I just portion control with the foods I always eat. I don't intend to switch my diet to meat, cheese, coconut oils, etc. I eat once/day. One keto researcher says that vegans have to "thread the needle" in order to be in ketosis. Huh? I just eat what I always eat, lots of berrys and beans included. My morning fasted G is usu below 90. My K usu are 1.1 to 1.5. Re the G/K ratio, I am usually in the "therapeutic zone." In fact, my ratios usu are

the issue with fasting to achieve ketosis is twofolds, firstly when you fast extensively, your body will go into starvation mode and will even expand extra resources to turn whatever you ingest into stored fat because it assumes food will continue to be difficult to come by. secondly going into keto through starvation causes a spike in lactic acid production I.e soreness throughout your entire body which can also harm your lean tissue, so it seems goofy. it's a shortcut that's not really a shortcut

  • @ppetrovi79
    @ppetrovi79 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

100% agree with "too much food" comment, but disagree that protein is the problem. Many people in ketosis end up in a situation where they are actually eating too much fat (as a percentage of total caloric intake). There's somehow a myth that Ketosis lets you eat all the fat you want, and/or that you must eat fat to be in ketosis, both of which couldn't be farther from the truth.
Side Note: Fat has 9 calories per gram (PER GRAM), relative to carbohydrates (and protein, if used as energy by way of GNG) which have 4 calories per gram. Add to this the fact that carbs come in bulky plant forms where there's a lot of "filler" material that isn't caloric at all. This means that comparing rice to olive oil makes for a roughly 10x or more difference in "caloric density by food volume" between the two. This means that eating too much fat is super easy, look at the calorie label on a bottle of olive oil, a stick of butter, a block of cheese, etc. This is VERY high density fuel, a little goes a long way (2000 calories of olive oil is 222 grams or roughly 1 cup, which is amazing considering the average person needs this amount of energy for an entire day of life).
Here's my mental model of Ketosis:
    1. Get into Ketosis by eliminating carbs from the diet ... (drink lots of water, take mineral supplements and/or put salt in your water, drink broths, etc, you will know that you aren't doing a good job if you get light headed when you stand from a seated or lying position, orthostatic hypotension, aka low blood pressure when standing, easily solved with extra minerals to boost in-body fluid volume through fluid retention which helps your body regulate adequate blood pressure)
    2. Eat vegetables, protein, and fat to satisfy your hunger ... (Ketosis comes with the gift of less urgent hunger, take advantage of this to eat less, drink more water, and have smaller meals when you do eat, particularly if weight loss is high on your list of goals)
    3. Loose weight by reducing fat intake (eating a bit more lean protein is fine, as GNG generally requires high amounts of excess protein to be a problem, protein also helps satisfy hunger while being a fairly poor source of caloric energy even if GNG is going full steam). Ketosis basically means your body is in fat burning mode, so if you eat less fat your body will not stop using fat as fuel (as long as you don't eat carbs/starches), it will be forced to use body fat as the fuel source, which of course if the magic sauce of how one can loose immense amounts of weight using Ketosis. (Hence the issues with people not loosing weight in Ketosis due to overeating dietary fat, thinking they have a free pass to eat bacon slices covered in melted cheese at every meal).

I don't get it. I do dirty keto with processed meats like Vianne Sausages or packaged breakfast sausages, pepperoni, etc. I also have a plenty of stringed cheese or other kinds of cheese. Snacks such as a serving or two of Pistachios, or this Keto Yogurt that is absolutely delicious but only has 2g of carbs. Hell, I even drink C4 and alcohol a couple of times per week at night and that even hasn't seemed to have had a negative effect. I feel like I don't have as bad of hangovers either. As much as I love bacon, it's too damn expensive. I like to also eat hard-boiled eggs as a snack. For fats, now and then I try to eat a little bit of avocado, cook some chicken wings with avocado oil, and when I can afford it, I'll eat bacon and use the bacon grease to cook a few eggs in. When I'm not too lazy, I make myself a fat bomb keto coffee with butter, heavy cream, MCT oil, and stevia. OR, I'll make a keto version of a Tuscan soup that is high in fat content. I don't even test my ketone levels, I just try my best to stay below 30g of net carbs. I lost a LOT of weight very quickly, have enormous cognitive and mental health benefits, my bowel movements are completely normal instead of totally fucked like before, and I just overall feel so much better in general. My energy levels have also increased a good deal. Several people I've watched tell me that I'm doing it all wrong, but it appears to be working great for me.

Like the 1k calorie intake from your other comment it depends on the one who eats it. You could say 1k is a number to start with and everything else is your body and how it will react. There is no standard measurement for each individual, it simply can't exist (or can but is plain wrong).

I have been told it is driven by what's your bodys need for bloodsugar. Why wouldn't it be. There is sure a lot off people saying the oposit. Again and again without showing any numbers. Makes more sence that it depends on the combination activity, carbs and protein.

Measure around 1-1.5 gram of protein per kg of your bodyweight and you'll be all good. I weigh 75kg and it makes for around 15-20% of daily calorie intake from protein.

thx for the tip, just curious how you located this figure.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

I can't say for sure but it's either www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com/ or some other website. I was also puzzled regarding the protein intake when starting keto, and found that it should not be fixed as a percentage of daily calories but as grams per bodyweight. It also depends on your activity levels, so if you're training and need to grow muscle I suppose you may climb to 2g per kg. But if you're sedentary, 2g per kg could be harmful to your body.

How about eat meat and fat until you're full and ditch the worthless salad?
You will hit ketosis twice as fast and you won't have to deal with all the inflammatory oxalates in the salad!

I'm a fan of Tim Ferris but I feel he's getting older looking fast. I don't know if it's because of all the experimentation he's done on himself.

This is Tim Ferris regurgitating ideas from who he thinks are the leading experts in ketogenic diets. There is no wrong way to do a ketogenic diet as long as you are lowering insulin and getting into nutritional ketosis. I think the carnivores have shown that protein has no effect on insulin in the context of a zero carb or Keto diet. Because Tim Ferris is buddies with Peter Attia and Dom Dagastino he thinks it makes him an expert on nutrition. Don’t believe the hype. There many ways to get into ketosis. Many people have achieved ketosis by taking the bun off their McDonald’s cheeseburgers or eating cold cuts and cheese, Myself included. Elitists like Tim Ferris and Peter Attia are so offended by the idea that people run successful ketogenic diets in that fashion which leads them to disseminate wrong information.
