    Hearing a rapid fire horn/whistle is extremely scary. Especially if it isn’t the first time you’ve heard it. It just sends chills down your spine.

    It's eerie when you hear 4014 rapid-fire whistling and you know what that whistle signal means, especially when you've never heard that whistle signal in a real life situation before.

      david whiting never have heard it and didn’t know what it meant... but it don’t take a surgeon to figure it out.... I rode with my uncle years ago in the engine and He used to get so mad at kids who would bridge jump at the last minute in front of us... I can only imagine Big Boy was MAAADDDD!

      Only other time I've heard that signal, I was the one blowing it. The air controls on the steam wrecker I was running (SPMW 7020) suddenly stopped working when I had a load on the hooks hanging in midair.

    I was standing about 50 yards down from where 4014 finally came to a stop, and witnessed the whole thing. A group of teenaged girls was standing very close to the tracks, with their backs turned to the train, doing the selfie thing as it approached. They were ignoring the verbal warnings of others nearby.

    I have a feeling that many people believe that Trains only run between the Rails,and that they don't overhang the Rails. 4014 is so extra-wide that when they went to the Golden-Spike 150th Anniversary in May,the Union Pacific was doing-track work along the way,and Ed Dickin's had to stop the 4014 and have the track-crews move some rocks that they put to close to the tracks.

    What is the big cloud of smoke? Do they smother the fire?

    • @Sathale
      @Sathale 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, they don't smother the fire. They converted 4014 to oil so when Ed went to stop her, he shut the throttle. That would severely drop the amount of air flowing through the fire box not giving the oil enough air to burn properly making it smoke like that.

    You know if the Union Pacific steam program gets shut down because of people like this well then I just don’t know what to say I’m just a teenager but I love steam locomotives and I’ve seen the big boy and 844 in action and if the program got shut down I would be extremely sad yes it probably will come to an end one day but if it happens while I’m young because someone wanted to get a “really good shot” while standing on the tracks with a train doing 60 mph and got hit oooo I would be so freaking mad because of one person that had to get a good picture we no longer get to enjoy these giants of the rails because they got hit shaking my head

    • @davidwhiting1761

      Plus if it wasn't an emergency, why use that specific whistle signal? You can even see when the crew dumped the air and slammed the throttle shut to stop the train (that huge plume of black smoke is what happens when there's a sudden increase in the amount of fuel in the firebox. Oil burners are fired by a constant spray of oil into the firebox which is ignited by the burner, and the fireman adjusts the amount of the oil being sprayed into the firebox based on how hard the engineer is working the engine and also based on the color of the smoke coming out of the stack, black meaning there's too much oil and white or clear meaning there's not enough. In the video you will see 4014 let out this huge cloud of black smoke starting around 1:08 which is just after the engineer finishes the emergency whistle code and lets out one long whistle. It's at this point that the engineer has closed the throttle and puts on the brakes so he isn't working the engine any more, and because of this sudden change in the throttle the fire momentarily had too much oil in it and the fireman had to quickly adjust his oil regulator and his atomizer to compensate).

      @Texassince1836 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not what a planned stop looks or sounds like.
      Ideally you slowly reduce throttle until youre nearly stopped (don't coast a steamer).
      The throttle was abruptly closed here, which is only done to prevent an accident.

    I'm wondering if GS-4 steam locomotive 4449 ever uses her steam whistle or her Leslie A-200 air horn in an emergency situation to tell everyone to get off of the tracks & out of her way.
    Oh yeah in this situation while 4014 was leaving Casa Grande, Arizona he was definitely mad.
    Here's what I think 4014's emergency whistle is saying. Get-the-hell-off-of-the-tracks-&-get-the-hell-out-of-my-way-now-or-you're-gonna-get-hit.

    I am a train driver from Australia and I understood the Emergency Whistle Code straightaway. I have often wondered if the amount of Whistling that American Drivers must comply with, has in fact had the Opposite effect. When We approach a leveling crossing here in Australia, it's 1 continuous whistle for approximately 2 - 3seconds long. Then if we have an any other reason to use the whistle such as an emergency it can be a continuous whistle or a series of whistles such as was the case in the video. Finally in built up areas we have very little public access with fencing and cameras. So think yourselves lucky to be that close to any train let alone the most Awesome of Locomotives.

    • @kingssuck06
      @kingssuck06 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the_retag There was just a problem the other day where they had a valve go bad, and they were leaking water. They stopped in a small town that didn’t want to give them the water. Then they almost had a low water situation, and guess what? The diesel was there to push them to Shreveport. If it wasn’t, the single track would’ve been clogged up for hours. It’s there for electric power for the cars, dynamic braking, and as a back up, as seen the other day. It doesn’t push at all, its not good for steam engines to run light long term, they need a load.

    There was no emergency stop. I don't think they even applied the service brakes let alone put it into emergency as I didn't hear any brake exhaust or squealing from the train cars. It looks like the engineer closed the throttle and laid on the horn until the idiot moved out of the way. The black smoke occurred when the throttle was reopened and draft through the firebox was reestablished. It also appears the run by and the shot with the train starting from a standstill were at two different locations. In the run by there were three tracksin the shot with a cut of tankcars sitting on the leftmost track in the distance. In the stationary shot there are only two tracks and no tankcars in view.
