  • Coming up, we’ve got another great countdown, spotlighting songs that brought some of music’s biggest legends back into the spotlight- it's the top comeback songs of all time including one that came when the singer Tina Turner was playing half-empty ballrooms on the oldies circuit. When it hit #1 it made her the oldest singer to have a #1 at almost 45… Another was from former teen idol Donny Osmond who was so uncool radio wouldn’t touch him so a fans sent new song on a blank cassette. When it was played everyone loved it but nobody knew who it was… eventually it became a smash… And then one where Elvis Presley was walking down the hall of a recording studio and heard an anonymous song being performed in a studio by girl singers, it was so good he pointed to them and said I want that song and I want those girls… He got both and it hit #1… So many great stories next on our countdown of the Top 5 Comeback Songs….

So today we’re counting down the top comeback songs in rock history. Let’s get into it. Kicking off the countdown of the Top 6 Comeback Songs, it’s Duran Duran’s dramatic tour de force….”Ordinary World” at #6.
It was 1986 when Simon Le Bon lost his close friend David Miles-a loss that left a mark on his heart and would quietly weave its way into his music. What began as raw grief slowly transformed into a trilogy of deeply personal songs, each one exploring the complex emotions of loss and healing.
The journey began with "Do You Believe in Shame," a song that wrestled with the pain of saying goodbye. Years later, the story continued with "Out of My Mind," a reflective piece laced with longing and introspection. Finally, the trilogy reached its poignant conclusion with "Ordinary World," a masterpiece of acceptance and resilience.
The heart of "Ordinary World" lies in its search for a sense of normalcy amidst life’s chaos. The song draws its inspiration from the phrase “ordinary world,” serving as both a longing and a reflection of the band's desire to find balance in turbulent times. Simon described “Ordinary World” as capturing the perspective of someone who suddenly finds themselves in a world gone mad, yearning to rediscover the familiar and comforting ordinary world they once knew. It’s a poignant exploration of loss, identity, and the universal need to anchor ourselves in something real: For years, Le Bon kept the inspiration behind these lyrics close to his chest, choosing not to share the deeply personal story behind them. But in 2004, during an interview included with Duran Duran’s Live from London DVD, he opened up. He revealed that these songs, though they seemed universal in their themes, were born from his own grief after losing David-a testament to the enduring bond of friendship and the power of music to process and heal.
In early 1991, Duran Duran took a different approach to creating "Ordinary World." Instead of booking an expensive commercial studio, they started working on the track in guitarist Warren Cuccurullo's home studio, aptly named.

Actually, Roy's comeback started when he and Emmylou Harris dueted on "That Loving You Feeling Again."
Van Halen's godawful cover "Pretty Woman" helped put more of a spotlight on the great original "Oh! Pretty Woman."
David Lynch's highly memorable feature of "In Dreams" in the film noir Blue Velvet put another spotlight on the master, his voice, and his haunting melodies.
By the time Traveling Wilburys came around, Roy Orbison's comeback star was already on the rise.

WNCI in Columbus, OH did the same “mystery artist” thing with Soldier of Love. I was the DJ at a club there (RnR USA) and did a live show on the air on Friday nights. When the song became a hit, Donny went on a bit of a tour to thank various radio stations, and WNCI was on that list. He agreed to do a meet & greet at our club, but the morning of his visit I got a phone call from the station and they said Donny would actually perform a few songs if I could get a Keyboard & mic setup. I rented a keyboard & we set it up on one of our dance platforms. Donny came in and it was pandemonium. It seemed like every woman who’d grown up a Donny fan was there, all with memorabilia they hoped to get signed. He actually grabbed the CD insert (that had the lyrics) from someone on the stairs right above him because he hadn’t really performed “Soldier” anywhere since recording it.
He did that then a bunch of old Osmonds songs then went upstairs and stayed, signing every item everyone brought. He got writer’s cramp so bad in his hand his assistant had to massage it every once in awhile and he turned no one away. There were over 1,000 people there - all seemingly had something to get signed. I gained a lot of respect for him that night. I have the 45 of “Soldier”, autographed, with the note “Thanks for playing it” to this day.
That turned out to be the busiest night that club ever had (beating out all the NYEs, Halloweens, etc).

My father, Reggie Young, played guitar on Elvis's Suspicious Minds. He told me the first day Elvis walked into American Studios, everyone felt his presence. It hit them the King had entered the building. Some trivia is on that song dad is playing Scotty Moore's Gibson Super 400 guitar, which Scotty had played when he and Bill Black backed Elvis years before. Chips Moman had bought Scotty's guitar and had it at American Studios during those sessions.

He's an amazing guy. I mentioned this a bit further up the thread, but I was a contestant on "Pyramid" in 2003 when he was hosting. I was selected to be on the show at an event in Atlanta and was flown straight from the event to L.A. to tape. I left my car that I had just bought in the parking lot of the mall and was praying it wouldn't get towed. I told that story on the show. It didn't make it on the air and I assumed he'd forget about it.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks after. Donny did an appearance in Birmingham, Alabama where I live. I went by to say hi not thinking he'd even remember me. He's being mobbed by his female fans, but he spotted me and immediately came straight to me, gave me a big hug, and said, "They didn't tow your car, did they?"

Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention George Harrison's "Got My Mind Set On You." It had been 5 years since the quiet Beatle had released "All Those Years Ago," a lot of people thought Lennon's murder meant that would be the last song we'd hear from George, and then -Set On You was suddenly all over radio in '87. Sure, it's a cover of a James Ray song from '62, but it still relit Harrison's candle to shine one more time.

I hope you'll cover David Cassidy at some point. Like Donnie, he was frustrated with his teen idol status. He had no control over his image because he was under contract to the Partridge Family production. His fan club was bigger than those of The Beatles and Elvis combined. At the height of his popularity, he quit The Partridge Family and walked away from touring for his mental health, which effectively killed his career as a pop idol, which he actually welcomed.
I was a kid when he was big, and I wasn't a fan. I didn't really discover him until after his death, when I began research for a personal project. I gained so much respect for him. He was a gifted actor, but couldn't make a serious acting career stick because he was typecast, but he was nominated for an Emmy for his role in Police Story.
He did a lot of other things, including, like his famous dad, musical theatre. He and Donnie both played the lead in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He also had a hit show in Vegas for years. When he returned to touring, doing the old hits, he had such an amazing connection to his fans. It's just endearing to watch.
David was a true showman. He could sing anything, from blues to classics to pop to rock and roll. He was a talented guitarist, but he could also play every instrument on the stage. He was a huge Beatles fan, and John Lennon became his friend and mentor. When he covered Paul McCartney's Tomorrow, Sir Paul said he brought the song to its full potential. It's availble on TH-cam. Please, give it a listen.
He kept his diverse career going for nearly 50 years. Whenever I doubt myself, I just think what David would say. For sheer tenacity, I cannot think of a better role model for anyone, musically or otherwise. Yes, he had a drinking problem. He battled a lot of inner demons. I hope that doesn't negate any of his acheivements.

Kim Carnes, who traveled, wrote songs with, and opened for him in the '70s, also speaks highly of him. So would Shirley Jones or Danny Bonaduce. There's also Chip Deffaa, who co-wrote his autobiography. Those are just a few sources I can think of. I'm sure there are many others.

After smoking crystal meth for 15 years straight almost on a daily basis (and having done it occasionally for 15 years prior to that) I was supernaturally healed through prayer on March 10th 2019. I spent a long evening on my knees crying out to God that I had to stop because I had lost everything I ever had. I experienced no withdrawal and no desire to do it or be around those who do, from that point forward. Smokey's story hit home with me. Praise be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit!

I was 10 years old and wasn't impressed at all (my parents divorced when I was 8 so I was already aware of much more than the average kid). The Elvis I knew was the one who incessantly cheated on Priscilla Presley and by the time that song came out all I had for it was side-eye. (I would also say that Elvis' dead-to-rights control over Priscilla is how Scientology was able to dig its hooks into her so easily.)
I remember loving bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chicago's first album came out that year, The 5th Dimension, Sly and The Family Stone, Tommy James, Blood Sweat & Tears, Three Dog Night, The Beatles and The Temptations. Even big songs like "Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers. Elvis' music just seemed like an old man trying to be cool and honestly it's like the sound was heavy and muddy as opposed to the other people I was enjoying who sounded crisper (and by that I mean the studio recording it). There were a lot of songs I loved that year and a few years later Billy Joel would take off. I guess I was born at the wrong time for Elvis.

You can even choose other Bee Gees' comebacks in the 80's such as "You Win Again" (though not a US hit) and "One" which brought the group back to the Top 10 in America after a decade of being blacklisted from radio.

I was a big fan of Donny Osmond growing up but I didn’t remember how good all the Osmonds were, not just Donny, but the whole band! Recently I revisited the group on a whim and was astounded at what I heard after all these years. Listen to their rockers, especially tracks like Crazy Horses and they are phenomenal! Another example of how people dismiss acts that have wholesome images like the Carpenters, etc.

Ordinary World works on so many levels. It speaks to the feeling of detachment from life that we feel when we lose someone we love. It also reminds us of all the types of sadness and struggle throughout the world. Sonically, it's grieving and hopeful at the same time. Very cathartic and beautiful.

Gotta give recognition to the Bee Gees who had 2 comebacks. First their explosive comeback in the 70s with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, and then again in the late 80's with the "ESP" LP 's hit song "You Win Again". The only band I can think of with hits in the 60's, 70's and 80's

Ordinary WOrld always felt older than the 90s to me, because it captured the same melancholy vibe I got from Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears. I remember when it first played on the radio in the early 90s, I thought, "Wow, took the execs long enough to release this one. What were they waiting for?" Of course, my family had no money for the music magazines that were the sole source of music news back then, so it wasn't until years later that I learned through the internet how this song was actually a comeback, rather than the long-delayed release I had initially thought it to be.

Roy Orbison - 22 years after his last hit in 1966. His first wife died in an accident in '66, and then two of his sons died in a house fire in '68, plus changing music tastes. He toured in Europe during those lean times and remarried. Then in the 80s Jeff Lynne and George Harrison pushed for his comeback, which resulted in the Travelin' Wilburys and his first solo album in years, but died after his first hit in years was released, "You Got It."

I'm so glad you put Duran Duran on this list! Although I understand why their Big Thing and Liberty albums essentially fell into obscurity, those albums had significant merit which deserve recognition. It's easy to see why Ordinary World and Come Undone brought them back to the spotlight. And Too Much Information should stand equally with those two.

Interesting you’re talking about Donny Osmond, my father was telling me that story about a couple of years ago where a deejay played that album, and nobody had no idea that was Donny because it didn’t sound like him, and it just took off (Fun Fact: Michael Bay directed the video for “Sacred Emotion”) My father loves Donny and the Osmonds (and he has Donny's Definitive Collection on his hard drive) so I'll send this video to him

"Just to See Her" a song that gives me back memories as a little kid, (the co-writer Lou Pardini, went on to be part of Chicago from 2009-2021 when Bill Champlin left the group) When Smokey is talking about when a close friend took him to a church and got him healed, I wonder if he's referring to Leon Patillo from Santana, cause he's a Born-Again Christian and on various outlets (and Patillo's webpage) he said he led Smokey to Christ (I Should point out my parents met Leon at church back in the 90s)
