  • I've been waiting a while for this one...
The fact the Waverley is 'the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world' makes for a cool video title, but at the same time, it also makes me a little bit sad! I hope to see her on the Clyde for many years to come, but maybe now is the time to get onboard and enjoy this unique experience around the stunning west coast of Scotland and beyond. Especially on her 75th Anniversary year!
Waverley Excursions is a registered charity and I can't even begin to imagine how much it costs to keep this old beauty sailing. I paid for my ticket, this is not a sponsored video, but I am more than happy to promote them as much as I can. Please visit waverleyexcursions.co.uk to book one of the vast array of routes sailing this summer. A friendlier bunch of people you will not meet!
I sailed on the first voyage of the year on Saturday 28th May 2022. Step aboard with me and see what all the fuss is about :)
    My route was:
Glasgow - Greenock - Rothesay - Tighnabruaich - Rothesay - Greenock - Glasgow (a long day at sea!!!)
I hope you enjoy the video.
Hi, I’m Steve. I am a travel reviewer and post my trip reports here on TH-cam. I pay for my own travel and produce my own videos. If you have any questions about my journeys or travel advice in general, please drop me a comment - I do read every single one. I travelled from Australia to see the Waverley and travel "doon the wata". Very much a highlight of my whole trip to the UK. Having generational family ties to ship engineers from Scotland, it was an emotional experience to watch the steam engines so close up aboard the Waverley. It really is magnificent to see this vessel and others that are still alive and so well maintained. Great video of a great day Steve!

The memorial is Hutcheson's memorial. My family has ties to the Waverley and I can't wait till I get to sail on her again. I live in Balloch and when I worked for VisitScotland in Helensburgh I sold tickets for her and saw her every weekend. My mum and uncle were at the meeting where she was sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society, and we scattered my Uncle's ashes on Rothesay Bay from her. She's very special to my family.

I always wanted to go on the Waverley. She used to run in South Wales and do day trips from Porthcawl to Cornwall. There are old stories of how the folks in Cornwall could hear the Welsh men singing, far out to sea, after a good day on the lash, drinking the Cornish ale. Such a beautiful ship! Thanks Steve, that was quite profound for me.

She is a fine sturdy old "Lady" and at 75yrs old is a couple of years older than me! I wish that someone would give me the love and attention that gives her a new lease of life! My old Uncle told me about her on the "Tail of the Bank" when she was new, as his family lived in Helensburgh, on the north side of the Clyde. He settled in Argyll north of the river, which the Waverley covers in her tours each year. I'm so impressed with her, that I will be having a sail yearly on the old Lady! Thankyou . Tich.

I wish I could have travelled on the steamer. Many years ago it visited Belfast but I missed an opportunity to travel from Belfast to Glasgow on it. However, about 19 years ago we visited Lake Lucerne in Switzerland and was able to do the round lake tour on the paddle steamer. A really enjoyable holiday as we visited many other beautiful places such as Zermatt. If I ever have a chance I’ll plan to visit the Waverley. Hope it keeps going for a long time yet.

I well recall a magical week spent Clyde Cruising with my Mum and Dad in 1956. The forward saloon of Waverley was where I first tasted poached salmon with new potatoes and fresh peas with mayonnaise. I still cook that delicious meal and remember those days. I also remember missing the pier at Tighnabruiagh on Duchess of Hamilton and having to do a 360 for a second attempt! Happy days!

Hi Steve, I have photographs of Waverley when she made a trip out to Steepholm in the Bristol Channel some 12 or 14 years ago. I was on Steepholm and took photos looking down the 200 odd feet to her standing off while a jolly boat ferried passengers to the Island and then later reversed the process to take them back onboard. As we left for Weston Super Mare in the evening light I took more photos of her as she swept past us and leaned into her turn to stb'd in the fading light and the fantastic colours in the sky reflected the dying embers of the sun. Wonderful memories! Thanks very much for your great video Steve.

The band is now called The Cooperation Band, for a while it had the not so pleasant name of The Co-Op Funeralcare Band, glad they changed it. No one wants to think of funerals when they go to a concert.

Quiz answer: It's a "Monkey Fist" on the end of a "heaving line".
That is VERY cool. I'm an old Navy Stoker from waaay back and the engine room is fascinating because everything is turned sideways and on its side to drive the paddles. Those Triple Expansion Clydeside steam engines transformed the shipping world in their time and they were being produced from the 19th century right up to the end of WWII. They' represent the best of Scottish ingenuity.

Oh that was great to get a " hurl " on the Waverley Steve. She came to Irvine round about Marymass time , August & I was on her then , maybe 40 yrs ago .
When you were on it did you sail past the Jubilee Hospital ? When I was a patient in there about 8yrs ago I used to watch ship's going along, not that many !
Thank you very much again Steve, keep them coming, from me in Irvine 😁😁😁

Yes indeed we did Grace! And I was thinking at the time I hope it gives some of the patients a boost to see her sailing past :)

Terrific Steve 👏 , I'm a Bankie so ships in my DNA , and I see her passing to home most nights and never ever tire of her 😍 . She was built in that basin right behind the ' tall ship ' . Since you're a traveling man Steve , when you passed the stretch along at Bowling , it's the only place in the world to have a main road Dumbarton Rd , boulevard ( A82 ) , motorway ( A8 M ) , canal ( Forth & Clyde ) and river ( Clyde ) all running side by side . Loved it Steve , extra special thanks from your man on the Clyde , best regards

Great old vessel Steve, and a credit to the trust that keep her seaworthy and still operating. Have been fortunate enough to have been on her twice. Like you I was stunned by the engine room and how quickly she still goes.
Cracking video as usual mate, stay well.

Your reminds me of when I was a kid and couldn't lake there they used to bring barges and big big ships up through but the sense of redesigned to canal and I really like that we don't see anything in the International salt head 3 barges that were made in what was 1899 and they had all steam engines and I'm used to be really nice to listen to them during the day

Wonderful memories of sailing on the Waverley and many others between 1955 and 1960 when holidaying at Dunoon. Every stop played Scottish music as the steamer arrived and departed and it was really quite emotional at the time. Also recall the Scottish voices announcing “Steamer for Tarbet and Ardrishaig” - there were lots of steamers although not many paddle steamers. What a shame that children can’t experience what we enjoyed so much in those days!

Hi Steve, A trip down memory lane. When I was a wee boy my auntie worked on the Queen Mary II during the summer season selling cigarettes, newspapers and sweets at the kiosk. She used to get my mum, sister and I tickets for a day cruise from Broomielaw in Glasgow down the coast to Tighnabruach and back again. All the yards were still working in those days and you could hear the sounds of riveters and see the flashes of welders. I saw on one trip the QE2 on the slipway being put together. Proper slicing sausage rolls in the onboard restaurant and big mugs of tea. Sometimes you would see the Duchess of Hamilton on a crossing - not sure where she was going to though. I have a lot of happy memories of cruising doon the watter and holidays on Cumbrae. Moira and I are off to Arran in July for a wee holiday. We're going to book an afternoon cruise on the Waverley from Brodick and around Pladda. Thanks for a great video, Steve. Paul and Moira.

Lovely video, Steve! I went on the Waverley for my birthday one year, as she does a section of the season from Southampton and Portsmouth then round the Isle of Wight. Unfortunately on the day we sailed, we had to miss going round the Isle and went to Lymington instead! She's a real beauty and that trip lives long in my memory. I must get back on next year when she's here.

What a magnificent vessel and beautifully restored, I saw it in Glasgow once, but it wasn't operating. The engine room reminded me of a particular ferry that ran in my home city (Sydney) between the city and Manly, the SS South Steyne, built by Henry Robb of Leith in 1938. As a kid, we used to catch it between the city and Manly to go surfing, and us kids would spend the whole trip mesmerised by the triple expansion steam engine.
Steve, bananas are considered bad luck on boats when going out fishing, and they were always banned on my little fishing boat. I hope you did not jinx the Waverley!!
Finally the knot looks like a Turks Head Stopper, tied to stop the rope running through a block at the end of the rope.

Great video, both visually and with the presentation of so much information. I was on holiday in Dunoon recently and had the sight, completely unexpected for me, of the Waverley calling in late one evening when I was having a wander on Castle Hill. It must have been within the first week of the sailings this year. She certainly looked smart.

Have just watched your fantastic film of this lovely vessel. Went on it this Jubilee weekend to Dunoon. The sun shone and it was a glorious trip, wonderful way to travel and beautiful views. Your film really captures it and I certainly want to travel on it again😀
