Extending the shutdown did enable widespread mail-in balloting, which proved to be the deciding factor in getting Trump thrown-out. But extending the shutdown caused many problems that were immediate and long-term. People don't like to talk about it, but suicide rates went up 400 percent among teenagers during the first 6 months of isolation. The 18 months that schools stayed closed - at least on the West Coast - set back students permanently and altered their life course. As to office buildings, the vacancy rate is now 40 percent and buildings have lost their value. Property investment vehicles went down so worker pensions went down. Food costs soared. Inflation skyrocketed. The only organizations doing well are the defense contractors because we are funding two wars and supplying arms to Israel and Ukraine. But hopefully things will turn around with Harris now being the front-runner and likely the President.
What we do is refrain from eating out anywhere local in the bay area, and put the savings into a quarterly bucket. Once every 3 months we can afford to travel out of state, and have back to back top notch meals for every meal from the savings. The price outside CA is so much cheaper, anything left over just front loads the next quarter.
