The 80's hair band scene was already starting to get overkill by the time Tesla came out. But they brought hard rock back down to earth a bit which was a breath of fresh air. No glitzy glam with these guys. Tesla rocks!

Tesla is one of the greatest bands of that era. And so unique in the fact that they didn't have the glam/hair metal vibe. They didn't need the gimmick, because the music stands on it's own - but fits in well with the others. I do love the hair bands, thrash/groove metal, and classic rock as well, but Tesla is in a class by themselves. Their catalog is phenomenal. Excellent reaction!!!

  • @johnbrodsky5374

Tesla was the opposition to “hair metal” when they hit the scene. They were all about the working man, blue jeans, t-shirts, and raw rock’s roll. It set them apart from most “hair metal” bands which chose spandex and bright colors to dress in. They gained a lot of respect from fans and musicians because of it… not to mention for being a great band as well.🤘🏼

It's also amazing that the their line "The USA, The USSR, With their six guns to their side. I see the message written on the wall, too much anger deep inside" has become relevant once again.

  • @joesmith8725

Glam/hair rock/metal did have that kind of vocals, kind of style and screaming. Shiny guitar solos and poppy guitar hooks and vocals. Usually upbeat sounding. A lot of it was kind of bluesy, too or just hard rock sounding. A lot of power ballads.
Tesla was a good band and better than most glam bands. They stood out like Motley Crue, Skidrow, Guns and Roses, etc.
Many good videos from them. "Signs", "What You Give", "Love Song", "Little Suzi", "Heaven's Trail (No Way Out)" are some of them. Just like most glam/hair bands, Tesla was at it's peak mid '80s - early '90s.
BTW, this song/video had The Cold War references. This was common during that time era for a lot of songs from all genres

Tesla was a bit of a mix of both 'hair/glam' metal and hard rock, the best of both honestly. Those solos on this song fit it perfectly, short but awesome. This was 1986, so the Cold War was still such a cultural influence on us all back then; consider part of the final verses..."The USA, the USSR, with their six guns to their sides"...believe me, that resonated with us.

So many other great rocking songs from Tesla to check out. "Gettin Better", "Rock Me to the Top", "Heaven's Trail (No Way Out)", "Hang Tough", "Edison's Medicine", "Freedom Slaves", just to name a few. Lol

Back in the day (1989), we used to listen to Tesla constantly. So much so that once I had my fill of countless replays of the Mechanical Resonance album, I just couldn't listen to the band anymore. The sandpaper-like raspy voice of the lead singer just grated on me like, well, sandpaper, and wore me down to the point where, even decades later, I still can't listen to them.

Tesla is one of my favorite bands and I have every album. Frank Hannon is an underrated guitarist for sure! I've seen them live six times and every time they were great! Even recently with Lynard Skynard they still play tight and loud. NO MACHINES!!!

You were really close, so to speak about the bus boy with big dreams. The lead singer was actually a truck driver for several years while paying their dues as Tesla was just getting started. Great band and just down to earth bunch of guys...still one of my top 5 of all time

Tesla.... one of my all time favorites. FAR from typical "hair band"! What hair? Where? Oh, they have hair? They are very talented, need no bushy hair, flashy crap., just talented. Period.
You should also check out a band named Triumph

I always thought Tesla should’ve been bigger, but they’re from my town so had a soft spot for them. Saw them several times back in the day including the show in Sacramento where they filmed the Love Song video…. They played the song like 3 or 4 times (don’t remember for sure) to get all the footage, but it was cool.

They were not hair metal, they have a bit more of an edge to them! Was at a club in Sacramento in 90 and Jeff and Brad came in and played a set with the local band! It was cool! Down to earth dudes!

This song came out during the thirty year Cold War between the US and the USSR (referenced in the lyrics) so you gotta understand the political climate of the late '80's was coming to a head. I think the lyrics are a commentary on how hostilities keep repeating themselves throughout human history. It's also a hair metal song, so...

The lead singer here has a great story on how he got the gig. He entered a singing contest on the radio and was picked as the winner, as u could of guessed. He was driving a sanitation truck 💩 so I know he was happy to get the singing job !!! 😄👍

Great reaction! Love Tesla, amazing live band who bring full on rock mode \m/ I also thought Jeff Keith had a raspiness to his vocals that no other hair metal band had. If I recall, Tesla came at the tail end of the hair metal era. Check out any song from the Five Man Acoustical Jam...you will not be disappointed. Keep up the great reactions!

To me, This song, this band, are quintessential 80s hair band sound and style.
There were bands before and after Tesla, but I don't think anyone captures the spirit of the 80s any better than they do.
Lots to choose from as they are very prolific, but this track is definitely their signature track. It gets their audience on their feet AND ROCKING the house!!
They're still touring and still put on a show!
    Highly recommend further exploration!
