The Finnish speeches during the continuation war were even more idealistic and stubborn, so much so that they still put they shivers down the spine. Despite the ideals however, the western world as well as fate itself had abandoned us by then unfortunately.
One of the first victims of the bombing of Helsinki was 7-year-old girl named Armi Hillevi Metsäpelto. And in the Swedish newspapers there were whole page ads that said (in Swedish, of course): " Now the world knows, what it is to be a Finn. You show, what it is to be a Swede." In Finnish: " Nyt tietää maailma, mitä on olla suomalainen. Näytä sinä, mitä on olla ruotsalainen. " And in Swedish: "Nu vet världen vad det är att vara finne. Visa DU vad det är att vara Svensk."
Neljä vuotta myöhemmin pohdin, että onko tuon lauseen sanoma ruotsalaisten kansankiihottamista ja sympatiaa suomalaisia kohtaan vai kaikkea muuta kuin positiivista?? Koska sota aikana ruotsalaisten suhtautumista ja apua voidaan kyseenalaistaa.

The USA did not declare war on Finland. ...and from wikipedia: "U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull congratulated the Finnish envoy on 3 October 1941 for the liberation of Karelia but warned Finland not to enter Soviet territory; furthermore, the United States did not declare war on Finland when it went to war alongside the Axis countries and, together with the UK, approached Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin at the Tehran Conference about acknowledging Finnish independence."

And I dont understand when people say that Finland which broke away from Russia in 1917 should not have been returned back but at the same time they claim that Crimea which broke away from Ukraine under pretty much similar circumstances must be returned back to Ukraine. Would you explain this to me?
Finland was it's own country for such a long time before that. Before being under Russian rule, it was under Swedish rule, but the country always existed on it's own. Finland also didn't "break away" from Russia, but Russia gave Finland it's independence after long political discussions and absolutely no aggression. Coming back after less than 30 years and trying to take it back by force just because of a pact that they made with Germany gives them zero right to do so.
Finalnd declared independence in December 1917, a month after illegal communist coup. Therefore no long political discussion could have possibly taken place between them. Crimea was an autonomy inside Ukraine the same way as Finland was an autonomy inside Russia. Both wanted to secede and both did after an illegal seizure of power in respective countries. Yet the cause of Finland percepted as rightful and the cause of Crimea as not. Talking of history Crimea too appeared to be a part of Ukraine by a strange historical accident, and their secession from Ukraine was predictable and was only a matter of time.
Here is the difference that Crimea did not become independent but Russia took it for itself! Think what it would be like if Sweden had taken over Finland during the Russian Civil War. Would it have been more harmed?

On another site, Free Karelia I think it's called, a couple of years ago I posted that Karelian effort could become expansive to include Petsamo despite they're not in the same region, but same effect to their theft
The Finns are heroes. Words matter little in this context. You defended the idea of freedom at a time when few people across Europe remembered what freedom even was.
@ImperialGuard9001 I know that British PM Chamberlain entered into an agreement to help Poland that they failed to back up, Whom in America made this agreement with Poland and the Baltic? I would like to know and understand your resources. Please list them.

@Adinax86 Where did you get the number that there were 10 000 Estonians against Finland? This is huge question for me. Estonians were considered to be untrustworthy, and only saw battle at the end phase of war, where they were mostly against Estonian Waffen SS and Germans. It was huge embarassment when many Estonians ran over to German side.
@Mainilanlaukaisija Ratz, it seems no english translation available. Although I'm familiar with the means Vilkuna did his research. When I began getting Ambetsbevis from Kokkola relating to my family I found it excellent that the extract included "cause of death" btw can anyone tell me the correct translation of "SLAG"?

@Diablotion okei.
@Mainilanlaukaisija Not ever occupied by Finns? I have a book, written by an English doctor that was touring Finland in the inter war period immediately following the Tavilsota, and I'm almost certain he remarked that while the settlement was small, there were Finns maintaining the port, as it was Finland's only ice free port (owing to the gulf stream) at that time. I'll have another look, but I think the title is Finland Forever.
@stalkka So, why SU didn't demand more after crushing finnish defenses in march 40? I think it was really uncomfortable for SU to have second-large city in range of field artillery of potential enemy/
Well we were underdog but we had few more tanks and planes than You claim. In the beginning of Winter War we had: 493 cannons, of which 73 were out-of-date guns but still usable. Coastline guns primarilly designed to be used against navy are not within these numbers. Planes:Fighters: 41 ready to get airborne, 15 under repairs. Bombers: 16 (!) ready to get airborne, 2 being repaired. Recoinnance-planes (usually out-of date fighters from 1920's) 57 ready-to-go and 14 under repairs.

Respect to Finns! .. re "little military help".. yes allies were slow to react but as of Jan 1940 strong Expeditionary Force consisting of British/French/Polish troops started to be formed .. soviets aware of that and perhaps it was one of the factors giving them incentive to reach settlement asap .. it's ironic how close Germans and soviets cooperated at that time, Germany intercepting Italian arms shipment (35modern fighters and 100000 rifles) and not allowing Hungarian volunteers to transit.
@Raisionpulsu That's very true. I live in America, and I'm a bit ashamed that we were so cowardly as not to help Finland after it proved to be an honorable ally.
My last name is Kautiainen. I'm Finnish. You can hear it in my youtube piano videos, where I say, "Hi, this is Sierra Kautiainen, and I'm going to play..." I'm fourteen years old- of course I've never been to Finland. I'm planning on living there someday. I'm currently teaching myself the language. Generalizations are dangerous...
@jeff61813 The US. - Finnish diplomatic relations were closer at that time and Hoover was very active for aiding Finland during Russo- Finnish wars. I'm sure this video is/ was pretty unsung in Finland as well. I'll send some links...
@Mainilanlaukaisija, For those who doesnt know. Sweden was not neutral during winter war, Sweden declared itself non-belligerent. Sweden sent 1/3 of the arms in southern Sweden to Finland. The biggest volunteer help from one nation to another in the history, was the volunteers from Sweden (didnt see much action though), most money gathered in the history from one nation to another, and so on. The allies intent was never to assist Finland but merely secure Narvik and Kiruna.
@enizbib I can only imagine. I have friends from Finland who have told me that, but I would've done it anyway. No matter if I had to fight the invader with my bare hands, there's nothing more beautiful than freedom.

Tears came into my eyes when I see how much my (=MY!) ppl has suffered...(anyway thank´s to everybody who fought for finnish freedom..including my fathersfather and mothersfather..)(I don´t like wars--but I am grateful to my ppl who defended themselves...)
Same here. Every single time with those old images, films and bits of actual historical narrative.
Me ollaan kärsitty kautta aikojen ja paljon.
As you know... Finland is not one of the Scandinavian countrys... just you to know...
it kinda is
nordfyr1 a small part of Finlands northen areas is
Finland is nordic, but not scandinavian. Because scandinavian implies similar roots to the swedes. And we are a completely distinct people group from swedes, norwegians and them. Different language, culture etc.
Btw. You are giving me and many others marvellous laughs so please keep entertaining us.

@Teleoceras Thank! At least someone still give Finland the honor it rigthfully deserves!
Kyllahan nyt meita veteraaneja haukutahan, muttta tarkeempi asia on etta Suomi sailytti itsenaysyytensa vallan. Hyvä Suomi!
Thanks to ALL who contributed so that Finland won the wars against USSR, both the winter war and contiuation war (WW2) - won in the sense that we kept our independence, earned in the WW1 war of 1917, and struggled for ever since. Als thanks to all who helped us out in any way.
Thomas / Swedish speakin Finn.
A striking resemblance is seen in Ukraine today. Sad to see history repeat itself. I dearly hope Ukraine will prevail in this unjust war.
Kiitos sotaveteraanit!
Makes me glad Finland is still a thing.
Kiitos!
this is one great film~!
long live finland~!
... only until bigger neighbor decides otherwise.
@@yurikozhokin8348 Russia is third world country, and will never be superpower again. By end of the century, it will be Muslim country.
@@molotovribbentrop2839 I see you pretty good at predicting future. In that case, can you tell the density of you next poop? Yeah, I did not think so.
@@yurikozhokin8348 It's known math. Russia is almost 15% Muslim already, and they have more children than Slavs.

Hieno ja tärkeä video!
Hurrah for the Brave Finns !
''The true warrior does not care if he is called a beast or a dog, the main thing is winning''
Oh, but I have to actually be thankful to Soviet union of attacking Finland. If they hadn't attacked, my grandfather wouldn't have left Karelia and wouldn't have met my grandmother. So my dad wouldn't have been born and then of course I hadn't been born either... So thanks. But I still hate you for what you did, Stalin!
And if Finland hadn't had the opportunity to rough-up and humiliate the Red Army it s doubtful the Soviets would have been ready to take on Hitler.

@Mainilanlaukaisija Is this the same Vilkuna of the Finnish Academy? These conversations enticed me to pick up J.H. Wuorinen's A History of Finland again from the library, in which he is mentioned.
@artur2277 I love Estonia. :) I think of Estonia as Finland's greatest ally. :D
@Mainilanlaukaisija Thank you, despite my studies thus far I was unclear if we lost Petsamo following the Winter War or the Continuation War. On another site, Free Karelia I think it's called, a couple of years ago I posted that Karelian effort could become expansive to include Petsamo despite they're not in the same region, but same effect to their theft
Finlan won!
Finland surrendered, we lost
Happy independence day... from your neighbour... Onnea itsenäisyyspäivänä Suomi, terveisiä naapurista!
We didnt get that help
The Finns are heroes.
Words matter little in this context.
You defended the idea of freedom at a time when few people across Europe remembered what freedom even was.
Wartime propaganda is so silly.
@ImperialGuard9001 I know that British PM Chamberlain entered into an agreement to help Poland that they failed to back up, Whom in America made this agreement with Poland and the Baltic? I would like to know and understand your resources. Please list them.
Respect to all Finnish heroes. It was no easy of "Imperium of Evil" to force Finland to surrender.
Touching piece of history.
kiitos kiitos teilegi
@Mainilanlaukaisija It's a pleasure to meet you, thanks for your insights. Save for the web it's difficult here in Oregon to get research materials other than the most general sort.
For U know... This is been taught to every Finnishs citizen to pay yuor debt in time. Our People have a sustained econimic situation in under control. It is an honor to pay your debt in time
@NoddyShoulder I read a quote years ago realative; "whom questions the morality of the one that pulls you from the quicksand." After what happend to Lavtvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
@Adinax86
Where did you get the number that there were 10 000 Estonians against Finland? This is huge question for me. Estonians were considered to be untrustworthy, and only saw battle at the end phase of war, where they were mostly against Estonian Waffen SS and Germans. It was huge embarassment when many Estonians ran over to German side.
@Mainilanlaukaisija Ratz, it seems no english translation available. Although I'm familiar with the means Vilkuna did his research. When I began getting Ambetsbevis from Kokkola relating to my family I found it excellent that the extract included "cause of death" btw can anyone tell me the correct translation of "SLAG"?
2:47 If you look the map, there are no Hungary, Albania, and Portugal. But, Czechoslovakia and Austria (which had been annexed partially and entirely by Germany) are still there. The Soviet Union is also mislabeled as Soviet Russia.
Here is not ireland too. Or if this map from 1921 cuz ireland gets indepence in 1922
@justiakas I agree, perhaps more approapriate would've been Holst's Mars, the bringer of war, not only for it's title but the dramatics of the music
@Diablotion okei.
@Teleoceras My Grandpa was in the Winter War,Lapland War and a Refugee from Russia when they took his home after from Finland.
@Janika6666 Are you from Hungary? That's very cool! :) Glad to hear from an Ugric neighbor!
Hieno klippi amerikkalaisilta, meijän pappa arvostais tätä!
@Raisionpulsu That's very true. I live in America, and I'm a bit ashamed that we were so cowardly as not to help Finland after it proved to be an honorable ally.
@sostav Aren't they defensive missles? Your sword is different than your shield, you know.
My last name is Kautiainen. I'm Finnish. You can hear it in my youtube piano videos, where I say, "Hi, this is Sierra Kautiainen, and I'm going to play..."
I'm fourteen years old- of course I've never been to Finland.
0:35 My Finnish girlfriend heard this part and said "Yeah, you're literally describing Hobbits"
Where did you find this? I am history student but i had never seen this before.. very interesting video, thank you for posting!!!
@enizbib
I can only imagine. I have friends from Finland who have told me that, but I would've done it anyway. No matter if I had to fight the invader with my bare hands, there's nothing more beautiful than freedom.
You have failed. I just checked your profile and found this:

by the way, 70 is spelled seitsemänkymmentä, not seitsemankymmenta (notice the "ä" letters)
