I fully agree with you. I found your channel ,quite by accident , while searching for different knife styles. My uncle had a Case Trapper for years, and I have too. We were on a hunting vacation in the 1970's when I pulled my trapper out to cut some rope to hang our deer. He said that it was probably the best pocket knife to ever carry, then pulled out his. We played a game trying to come up with how many uses our trappers had. He told me that an old woodsman explained why he thought it was called a "trapper". He said that a fur trapper would use the clip point for the traditional uses like sharpening trap stakes and such but used the spay blade for skinning to avoid puncturing the pelt. The old woodsman said that he also used his to carve spoons. Great video, thank you.
I like a spey blade, especially a broad spey blade like those on the Panama Trapper and Case's limited run Copperhead trapper which makes them even more versatile. The size of a traditional trapper is another strength - it's small enough to be portable but big enough to take on the vast majority of chores and be comfortable in the hand. Your point about the blades being similar is spot on. For some that is a bonus, for others, a stockman is a better choice... 😉
Love my Trappers…I’ve gutted deer, cut the breast off of a wild Turkey, cut the beard off from a Wild Turkey, cut up a steak, skinned wire, cut up a tomatoes, sliced up potatoes…I’ve seen other men use the Spey blade for different things…I grew up with the Trappers! Awesome video and great collection
my grandpa after we sold off our cattle always used the spay blade for more of chopping things like food or stuff that wouldnt dull the blade and used the clip point for things that could dull the black like wood and harder things
My favorite pattern by far. Don't understand the hate on the spey blade I use it all the time except if I need to poke open a bag or something like that I use the clip point. Thanks for the video man. I'm a huge fan of Cv also🇺🇲
Another folded blade makes the grip less comfortable. I like Case Trapper with a single Wharncliffe or Clip blade. I hope they will produce it more often.
It wasnt JUST for castration, it was for skinning-dressing game. That steep clip lets you invert and keep the cutting action where you need it. Thus the "trapper" part. Great blade profile. Also notice how "high" that blade sits when fully opened compared to the other blade? Thats to help when using it "blade up" Many traditional hunting/skinning knives had a similar shape too. Castration is just another thing that shape blade does well. Guarantee most the folks saying that don't hunt.
I appreciate the info, and yes I agree. The term Spey, when looked up in the dictionary means to castrate. -What is a spey blade used for? Spey blades were originally used by cowboys and ranchers to castrate livestock. The rounded belly and blunted tip were effective at slicing without accidentally puncturing veins and vessels accidentally. -So I believe that the people I’m referring to are saying they don’t like a trapper because they don’t like the Spey blade because they say they have no use for it. I was just giving my opinion on what I considered a wide variety of uses for the Spey blade on a trapper knife for daily use. Thanks for watching.

I personally think spey blades are a great stand in for fileting a trout in the field on camping trips. Gives a clean cut, no point to lacerate the meat when working on a rough surface. Also makes quick work of skinning rabbits clean, their skin being like tissue paper the spey is very forgiving. Doesn't matter if your not using the fur, but, I use it. You have a nice collection, each knife seems to bring back memories and adds to the patina. God bless!

Been collecting pocket knives for a handful of years, lots of modern ones-button/axis/compression locks and autos. The more years that go by the more I’m attracted to these traditional folders. Something about the classics that scratches the right part of my brain. Great lookin collection!
Country boy here also, been trapping since childhood. After pulling critters out of traps all morning, the clip point is used to open the leg cuts, then spey blade for rest of skinning task. Always skin critters after eating a quick lunch, lighten the canoe by a few hundred pounds. Makes much less work at end of day. I guess that's why it's called a Trapper. 3 blade Stockman is used for castration duty, hence the name.
I appreciate your reply. And boy, don’t I love it when y’all try to school me like I’m a complete dumbass! Do you even know the definition of “Spey”? The trapper shares the Spey blade with the stockman because for the same reasons it was designed to castrate an animal cleanly it also happens to make a good skinning blade but the term Spey literally means to castrate. There are knives like the folding Hunter that have a clip and an actual “skinning” blade then you also have knives like muskrats with two identical clip blades. Plus you clearly missed the ENTIRE POINT of this video. Thanks again!
Great vid. I bought 3 new xx trappers to give to my son inlaws at Christmas. Iam making leather carriers for them. I wish I had come across this vid first, I wouldve shopped harder for various models.. love the scant cut on the one
Awesome Video my man. I grew up around Trappers and love them about as much as I do a SodBuster. I’ve seen that Spey blade used for everything from skinning deer to like you said, scrapping gaskets of the block of a SBC. The trapper is about as handy of an EDC as you can get! I love the Buffalo Horn.. now I’m gonna be looking!
We’ve used 54 pattern Case trappers for years skinning deer and hogs. Also great in the kitchen for food prep. If one blade dulls just open the other and keep going.
I am a fan of the Case Trapper and the Stockman so I carry both . One in each jeans pocket, both are CV and both yellow scales . Use the Trapper spey blade almost as much as the clip . Handy to dress out fish , small game for the table and to open packages with less risk of poking the contents . Very nice collection Sir , thanks for showing .
I have two trappers from the 90`s that I have rotate carried for the past 20 something years (a black synthetic and a stag). I use the spade blades for utility like opening cans, cutting rope, screw driver (rough work) the heavy tips hold up well. The other blade I save in case I need a super sharp blade for skinning, splinters etc.

Not going to lie, that jimping job was done pretty damn fine if you ask me. Case Trappers have a special place in my heart. My first ever knife I bought to really use was a Case Trapper. I got one brand new in package at a flea market for 20 dollars, from a man and his son selling a few things. It's a CV steel knife with the yellow synthetic handles. Got it to cut weedwhip string for my first summer job as a landscaper. Still have that knife, and it's been with me for quite a few life events.
TOTALLY agree about the spey blade. Forget the last 5% (i.e. the tip), it's a long, straight sharp blade! And like you said, you shouldn't be stabbing into stuff with a slipjoint anyway! I really can't think of many real-world pocketknife cutting tasks that can't be done with a spey. Great video ..... and a darn nice trapper collection you've got!
I like a Trapper - and Case make a grand Trapper. They're my go-to fishing knife, with the Clip used for processing the catch and the Spey for eating my lunch. Just landed one in Giraffe Bone - awesome! Some folks turn their noses up at Trappers, but that's just passing fashion I reckon - it's a great pattern. Seeing your collection Sir was a real treat thank you.
The spey blade on my trapper stays razor sharp because all I use it for is castrating bull calves. Now I am definitely not saying it couldn’t be used for other things. It’s definitely a great blade design and has a multitude of uses! Great vid bro!

See this was the whole point of the video, people seem to think that this kind of thing never happens anymore and so my reply is, we’ll even if you’re not castrating animals it still has uses and shouldn’t be forgotten or dismissed. Man you got me itching to get a mini trapper with the Spey Blade. I have a mini trapper already with the wharncliffe blade that is probably, if pressed name a favoate traditional knife pattern it would be a toss up between it and the medium stockman. So saying I love that knife would be an understatement. I need me a good standard mini trapper in my collection, perhaps it will be my next purchase! Thanks for sticking up for the Spey blade, I thought it was useless at first my main EDC being a Case medium stockman it was always on me so I have since warmed up to it and appreciate it greatly. It’s The best box opener there is! The walk and talk on the Trapper is always the best of the best even on a Chinese made knife. Such a satisfying click that it makes when the blade shuts and they always have good lockup. I wish medium stockmans were at this same level!
Great video, brother. Just FWIW, it is "Antique Bone Barnboard." Usually has that darker tint on the scales. The Natural Barnboard is quite a bit lighter. Love those natural Barnboards. Good job on this vid, and great collection.
I know this is a bit of a late reply but one other thing the spy blade is good for is fleshing hides, like deer hides, raccoon etc. love the video! Nice collection. 👍🏻
Interesting. Recently I became curious about Trapper variations, added blades. blade locks, opening mechanisms. I've always liked the Trapper pattern and my original trapper is a Case with a yellow delrin handle I bought from a hardware store that was discontinuing thei Case line. That was long ago. My take on the Trapper pattern and the spey blade is that you can field dress a deer with it. I keep the spey blade razor sharp and use it for cutting artiocles out of paper and things like that while I use the California clip blade for rougher work. Two of the prettiest trap;pers that I have is a Kershaw mini trapper with a red bone handle and a Bear and son's with a rose wood handle.

To change or alter the color of the bone covers or handle,is to use paste wax shoe polish.I’ve been using it for years to make my knives look like I want them to.Brown,tan,cordovan,black.Mix a couple of different colors together and have at it.Just remember that you don’t get but one chance depending on how you do it.
Clip blade is my food prep blade. Keep sharp delicate cutting. My Spey is the work blade. Strip wire, scrape gasket, cut cardboard I’m not scared to dull that blade cause it’s a work horse. The cv holds a good edge and easy to sharpen.
I started this year giving my one nephew a knife for Christmas because hes old enough to actually have a real truck driving job and not have to sell everything when the farming season is over. I also gave him an old rifle i shortened the stock down on for his girlfriend to use. Hes been going out with her for at least four years now and she likes to go deer hunting on her dads farm
Nice video, and nice collection, good Sir. I really loved the Case 3 blade hunter trapper. I've considered trying to get one myself. In regards to the spey blade, I personally don't care for it but it doesn't make me hate the Trapper Pattern knife. My dislike of It is based on my uses and tasks. I love the primary clip point and would like to have a trapper with a Warnclift blade as the secondary. I actually have a Case Hobo Trapper that I often carry with me when I go out to eat because you just never know if the restaurants are going to have those flimsy utensils made of crappy thin sheet metal. I have considered getting a Case Trapper in CV, because I prefer it as well, and modifying the Spey blade into a Warnclift. I've also considered getting a cheap Rough Rider and modifying it first and carrying it to see if I'd want to do that with a Case. My father carried a Large Stockman in CV for a very long time even after breaking and reprofiling the main blade a couple times. He got another one later on but just didn't care for it as much because it wasn't the same color/pattern bone handles. They stopped making it we've heard. I don't remember offhand what it was called.
Stockman is probably my go to pattern just because it's extra blade the sheepsfoot adds a lot of versatility but the Copperhead has become my favorite pattern because it doesn't have the spey blade. I don't exactly need the spey most of the time, the pen blade is more useful to me. That being said, I have been using my 1095 SMKW case trapper a lot of late. It is a joy to use and sharpen. I personally like just grabbing all of the patterns in the classic amber jig bone.
Nice collection buddy and I couldnt agree more with ya on the spey I've carried a case knife all my adult life trappers and medium stockman are my go twos put a edge on it and use it lol people definitely get bent out of shape over little things
I personally just find the tip of spey blades to sometimes be tricky to sharpen. It really is dependent from one to another. I have a few trappers myself and like them but find my go to pattern to be the stockman specifically the 3.5 inch to 5 inch patterns. I like my self a good large to jumbo stockman/cattle knife. I use the sheepsfoot the most on the stockman. When I carry a trapper I will typically add a shepherds knife to the pocket just to have a sheepsfoot available to me.
I'm a stockman kinda hick. For me, the spey is there to abuse. It's great to have when you're cutting through something onto a hard surface. It also makes a handy scraper and light pry. (Big J recommended you)
Hey guys I just wanted to make a pinned comment that hopefully y’all will see and maybe shed some light on the premise of this video. So- the idea for this video was to discuss the “Hate” for the Spey blade in a trapper knife that would be carried by the average person. I’ve notice that most of the comments left on this video (and I appreciate them all!) seem to go something like this- “I skin deer with my Spey blade” or “I use my Spey blade to process squirrels” or any sort of skinning/ meat processing work. And while I applaud all of you for carrying on the tradition because I’m an avid outdoorsman myself the idea of this video was to show the “non-hunters” and “non-outdoorsmen” that there were many if not any and all chores that can be done with the Spey blade, and that’s why my examples were things such as opening packages, cutting straps and rope, sharpening a pencil, peeling an apple, etc… skinning game was sort of the kind of task that a lot of younger/less experienced knife enthusiast find irrelevant in todays society and therefore that’s why they find the Spey blade so useless. So once again I applaud all you fine men for skinning and processing game/fish with your Spey blades but the real idea for the video was to show the more day to day things you could do with the Spey blade 👍🏼
I get what your saying but you got the wrong model for what you want to do with it maybe you should go for a barlow it fits the bill more than a trapper that is why you got out door fellas talking about what they do with a out doors knife
@@thronebreaker6950 I appreciate you watching, and I appreciate your comment, but you’ve totally missed the point… the video was never about what knife I or anyone else “chose” it is simply about all the people on TH-cam and Instagram that I see saying the trapper is useless in today’s world because people aren’t castrating animals anymore and or many aren’t skinning/processing animals. And so my take is that even on simple everyday tasks such as peeling an apple, cutting a rope, maybe sharpening a carpenters pencil etc. the Spey blade will perform just at well as the clip. And so the pinned comment that you have replied to was only to clarify that yes the Spey blade is obviously good at skinning and processing meat because that parallels what it was designed for and to suggest that it also has the ability to perform all the tasks I just mentioned. And therefore it is not “useless” even to the city boy that isn’t castrating and skinning deer. It was never about knife choice as you’ve suggested. I have almost every popular pattern in my collection it’s not about that at all.
I get it but at the end of it all that is a model made for the out doors hints why it is called the trapper. I suggested the barlow because it is a working man's model for doing everyday task I'm not saying your wrong but everyone buying a trapper and expecting ot to do non trapper things is going to be disappointed with the spay blade. But a knife is a knife at the end of the day.

I don’t like a barlow particularly because I have huge hands… all I’m saying is a Spey blade will cut just like a clip point at the end of the day. I even showed in the video how similar (all but the tip) the two blade profiles are. I’m not sure what else to say at this point.
Understandable. On your point I am putting out there if people think a blade is useless for what they are trying to do with it simply switch to something more fitting to the job. That a tool was made for instead of using a tool made for a different job but at the end of it all I appreciate you utilizing traditional knives and praising them all the same
Hey fellow knife lovers, When I first got into collecting knives in 2014 I started with Case Knives. I have 75 case knives in all there patterns and handle scales. I’ve never used any of them and I have all the box’s for them. I am trying to sell my whole collection. I have genuine stag knives and Buffalo horn and 2,000 year old wood knives with the papers for it. Dominick
I am not a trapper fan, I prefer the stockman. Stockman knives also have spey blades. I have re-examined my view on the spey blade. On almost every trapper or stockman that I have ever owned the spey blade is the sharpest blade on the knife. That is due to the excellent hollow grind that manufactures put on the spey blade. The spey blade is the best design for skinning an animal. That blade shape will prevent punching holes in the hide. I carry a trapper quite a lot during the summer as I have found that the spey blade is the best tomato sliver I can have in my pocket. It gets used every day at lunch. One last note on the spey blade, look up a surgeon’s scalpel. You will find that the shape is very much like a scalpel. If you are every in a life or death emergency situation that requires someone to be cut on, the spey blade would make the nicest cuts. Maybe it should be referred to as the scalpel blade instead of the spey blade.
My wife and I were on vacation in California back in the 80's and we drove thru the redwood forest. I pulled out into a rest stop and we hiked a little ways back into forest to experience all the giant redwoods. At the base of one tree was a brand new Puma Hunter. We waited around the side of the road for a little while, but no one showed up, so I put the knife in my pocket and drove down the road. I was managing a cattle feedlot at the time southwest of Phoenix, Arizona. I would receive about 60 calves a month, half of them heifers and the other half bulls calves that weighed approximately 250 lbs. I used that Puma knife for 3 years castrating a little over 1,000 head. I sharped it so many times that it could no longer hold an edge. I'm 75 yrs. old now and I still have the Puma, but only pull it out occasionally to reminisce about the "good old days" I spent as a feedlot cowboy.
No use for a spey blade can actually be a reason to carry it. That useless blade is pretty handy when that clip blade you ALWAYS use, and been meaning to sharpen these last three years, finally gets so dull you can't cut spaghetti with it. Liked the video, was recommended, it's unusual that TH-cam suggests something I like...I used to have a rather large collection, around 350 pockets and bowies. A couple of your Trappers brought back some memories. They were all pretty much destroyed in a house fire about 10 years ago. Just started rebuilding it last year. Love a Case Trapper, or any Case for that matter. There's only one blade that's useless...a dull one. and remember what Confucius said .. "He who collects blades also collects bandages" ⚔
And you can use clip blade to pierce all day long IF you always pit positive pressure on blade while piercing, and for added safety if you wish, use the pinch grip when doing it.

The spey blade is a great blade for skinning. I have used a Case XX Trapper for decades when I go deer hunting the the belly of the spey blade makes quick work of skinning out a deer. I for one love that blade shape. But then I am not a knife collector per say, I am a deer hunter that will take between 3 and 5 deer a season for meat.
I am a huge Trapper fan. I love my Case trapper.(just have one so far.) Those are super nice! How did you get all the good ones? oh yah gifts and ebay. How did you get all the perfect Cases? Ive gotten 2 bad ones that almost turned me off. That jimping is awesome! Amazing Deals on all of them! Id buy them all day for under $50 if I could find them.
Well they’re not all “perfect” but they are all well within what I consider acceptable. I won’t buy a case knife sight unseen. Too risky. However I do buy a lot infinites off eBay if the seller has good pictures or is willing to send me extra pics of the things I like to check for. I’ve had pretty good luck this way. Or otherwise buy from a local place where you can pick through the inventory to select a good one.

The problem with me and live-streaming is that where I live I have ZERO internet signal. I literally have to record my videos at home and wait till I get to work to upload them. our home internet is also through our cell phone plan using a hotspot so it barely does enough to get the kids through their schoolwork. We also live way out where they haven’t run any kind of fiber or dsl yet. I really appreciate The invite though!
in my little cityboy brain the trapper makes perfect sense. right now i´m using a minitrapper at work to dull down the speyblade...once thats done the mini trapper will be my picnic and bbq knife. its a perfect butter knife!
I tend to use it like a skinner blade for game. Eating blade for steak n taters round the fire lmao. For a single blade I like the swingguard/cheetah, will change it out for the large trapper sometimes and just got another. And always a medium stockman handy...
I have inherited two genuine Russel Green River pattern skinning knives, both at least 80 years old. They used to be used skinning steers and sheep. As I’m nearly as old as those knives I now buy untrimmed cuts of beef and use them to cut the fat and silver skin. Trimming those are quite like skinning.
I'm not a hunter, but do a fair bit of general camping, gardening, and cooking. The really long trappers aren't my favorite, but I love the 3.5" size for the pattern. As far as speys, I find them more useful in that size or on a stockman and love the more curved shapes. It's a small skinning blade. I like them better for peeling fruit, processing chili peppers, rocking motions on a cutting board, opening boxes where you don't want to stab too much, some whittling tasks, and they often have a nicer shape for cutting rope and nipping fruit off plants. Carrying nothing but a stockman for 6 months and doing ALL size appropriate chores, tasks, and food prep was a great exercise for learning blade shape uses.😂
Rough Ryder has decent knives as does Marbles and Brother (which I just picked up one). Case is just a step up from those brands. My Case knives are all inherited from my father and a couple were my grandfather’s.
I saw this video a few weeks ago looking for Case knives and have to agree with you on the spay blade. Why in the world anyone would be hung up over it. I think it’s great and use mine to peel and slice meat, cheese and on fruits.

Because while us country boys know how to use a Spey blade for it’s Intended purpose, it’s those younger guys who will never kill a deer or castrate an animal that I feel don’t like/understand the Spey blade…

The spey blade is used for skinning without puncturing the hide and my dad always used his for cutting his meat, as do I. It is also good for spreading peanut butter,potted meat,anything you might use a butter knife for.
The spay blade was not intended for castration. It was intended to be a skinning blade that wouldn't accidentally poke a hole in an expensive hide. The warren or sheep's foot on a stockman knife was meant to be for castration.
About the spay blade, as a fight'n rooster collector that is the go to blade for me. I have always used the spay blade to do what ever I need to use a knife for. Except to eat with or to gently poke something like a splinter. PS I do have case knives also so don't hate on my fight'n Roosters to much. Us the spay and don't scare up the clip.
I actually like the clip blade on the Boker Trappers a little more than the Case because they dont have that round spot right before the tip. They are more pointy.
Great collection! I don't get the spey blade hate thing either. It either cuts or it doesn't, it works ir it doesn't for the purpose you. It could be shaped like a dolphin and if it worked then carry on 😂 Just curious what's your take on Case Russlock knives? They’re definitely no as attractive as a nice clip point, but I just hear a lot of guys acting like the Spey blade is “useless” in modern times because most of the population aren’t castrating farm animals these days, and so my whole idea for this video was to show that simply as a knife blade the Spey is just as capable at achieving daily tasks as it partner the clip blade, I even went as far as to show how the edge profiles are even very similar to further show that when it comes to cutting rope or peeling fruit or cutting tape, the Spey is just another blade and shouldn’t be hated on because of its name and design
I carried a USA made schrade old timer trapper and field dressed many deer with the spay blade for over 20 years with that knife until 2021 when I lost it after dressing out big 8 pointer and laid it on the ground. Looked for that knife for hours.
I also have three mini trappers, which I prefer more than the regular trapper. Also don't see what the fuss is about the spey blade, it's sharp and can be used. Spent a few childhood summers on my grandparents' farm in the Philippines, but never saw any spaying, and nobody had folding knives there. Cool bullet shield there. Yep, RJ is a cool dude.

I fully agree with you. I found your channel ,quite by accident , while searching for different knife styles. My uncle had a Case Trapper for years, and I have too. We were on a hunting vacation in the 1970's when I pulled my trapper out to cut some rope to hang our deer. He said that it was probably the best pocket knife to ever carry, then pulled out his. We played a game trying to come up with how many uses our trappers had. He told me that an old woodsman explained why he thought it was called a "trapper". He said that a fur trapper would use the clip point for the traditional uses like sharpening trap stakes and such but used the spay blade for skinning to avoid puncturing the pelt. The old woodsman said that he also used his to carve spoons. Great video, thank you.

I like a spey blade, especially a broad spey blade like those on the Panama Trapper and Case's limited run Copperhead trapper which makes them even more versatile. The size of a traditional trapper is another strength - it's small enough to be portable but big enough to take on the vast majority of chores and be comfortable in the hand. Your point about the blades being similar is spot on. For some that is a bonus, for others, a stockman is a better choice... 😉

Love my Trappers…I’ve gutted deer, cut the breast off of a wild Turkey, cut the beard off from a Wild Turkey, cut up a steak, skinned wire, cut up a tomatoes, sliced up potatoes…I’ve seen other men use the Spey blade for different things…I grew up with the Trappers! my grandpa after we sold off our cattle always used the spay blade for more of chopping things like food or stuff that wouldnt dull the blade and used the clip point for things that could dull the black like wood and harder things
My favorite pattern by far. Don't understand the hate on the spey blade I use it all the time except if I need to poke open a bag or something like that I use the clip point. Thanks for the video man. I'm a huge fan of Cv also🇺🇲

Another folded blade makes the grip less comfortable. I like Case Trapper with a single Wharncliffe or Clip blade. I hope they will produce it more often.

It wasnt JUST for castration, it was for skinning-dressing game. That steep clip lets you invert and keep the cutting action where you need it. Thus the "trapper" part. Great blade profile. Also notice how "high" that blade sits when fully opened compared to the other blade? Thats to help when using it "blade up"
Many traditional hunting/skinning knives had a similar shape too. Castration is just another thing that shape blade does well. Guarantee most the folks saying that don't hunt.
I appreciate the info, and yes I agree. The term Spey, when looked up in the dictionary means to castrate. -What is a spey blade used for? Spey blades were originally used by cowboys and ranchers to castrate livestock. The rounded belly and blunted tip were effective at slicing without accidentally puncturing veins and vessels accidentally. -So I believe that the people I’m referring to are saying they don’t like a trapper because they don’t like the Spey blade because they say they have no use for it. I was just giving my opinion on what I considered a wide variety of uses for the Spey blade on a trapper knife for daily use. Thanks for watching.

I personally think spey blades are a great stand in for fileting a trout in the field on camping trips. Gives a clean cut, no point to lacerate the meat when working on a rough surface. Also makes quick work of skinning rabbits clean, their skin being like tissue paper the spey is very forgiving. Doesn't matter if your not using the fur, but, I use it. You have a nice collection, each knife seems to bring back memories and adds to the patina. God bless!

Been collecting pocket knives for a handful of years, lots of modern ones-button/axis/compression locks and autos. The more years that go by the more I’m attracted to these traditional folders. Something about the classics that scratches the right part of my brain. Great lookin collection!

Country boy here also, been trapping since childhood. After pulling critters out of traps all morning, the clip point is used to open the leg cuts, then spey blade for rest of skinning task. Always skin critters after eating a quick lunch, lighten the canoe by a few hundred pounds. Makes much less work at end of day. I guess that's why it's called a Trapper. 3 blade Stockman is used for castration duty, hence the name.
I appreciate your reply. And boy, don’t I love it when y’all try to school me like I’m a complete dumbass! Do you even know the definition of “Spey”? The trapper shares the Spey blade with the stockman because for the same reasons it was designed to castrate an animal cleanly it also happens to make a good skinning blade but the term Spey literally means to castrate. There are knives like the folding Hunter that have a clip and an actual “skinning” blade then you also have knives like muskrats with two identical clip blades. Plus you clearly missed the ENTIRE POINT of this video. Thanks again!

Awesome Video my man. I grew up around Trappers and love them about as much as I do a SodBuster. I’ve seen that Spey blade used for everything from skinning deer to like you said, scrapping gaskets of the block of a SBC. The trapper is about as handy of an EDC as you can get! I love the Buffalo Horn.. now I’m gonna be looking!

We’ve used 54 pattern Case trappers for years skinning deer and hogs. Also great in the kitchen for food prep. If one blade dulls just open the other and keep going.

I am a fan of the Case Trapper and the Stockman so I carry both . One in each jeans pocket, both are CV and both yellow scales . Use the Trapper spey blade almost as much as the clip . Handy to dress out fish , small game for the table and to open packages with less risk of poking the contents . Very nice collection Sir , thanks for showing .
I have two trappers from the 90`s that I have rotate carried for the past 20 something years (a black synthetic and a stag). I use the spade blades for utility like opening cans, cutting rope, screw driver (rough work) the heavy tips hold up well. The other blade I save in case I need a super sharp blade for skinning, splinters etc.

Not going to lie, that jimping job was done pretty damn fine if you ask me.
Case Trappers have a special place in my heart. My first ever knife I bought to really use was a Case Trapper. I got one brand new in package at a flea market for 20 dollars, from a man and his son selling a few things. It's a CV steel knife with the yellow synthetic handles. Got it to cut weedwhip string for my first summer job as a landscaper.
Still have that knife, and it's been with me for quite a few life events.

TOTALLY agree about the spey blade. Forget the last 5% (i.e. the tip), it's a long, straight sharp blade! And like you said, you shouldn't be stabbing into stuff with a slipjoint anyway! I really can't think of many real-world pocketknife cutting tasks that can't be done with a spey. Great video ..... and a darn nice trapper collection you've got!

I like a Trapper - and Case make a grand Trapper. They're my go-to fishing knife, with the Clip used for processing the catch and the Spey for eating my lunch. Just landed one in Giraffe Bone - awesome! Some folks turn their noses up at Trappers, but that's just passing fashion I reckon - it's a great pattern. The spey blade on my trapper stays razor sharp because all I use it for is castrating bull calves. Now I am definitely not saying it couldn’t be used for other things. It’s definitely a great blade design and has a multitude of uses!

Man you got me itching to get a mini trapper with the Spey Blade.
I have a mini trapper already with the wharncliffe blade that is probably, if pressed name a favoate traditional knife pattern it would be a toss up between it and the medium stockman. So saying I love that knife would be an understatement. I need me a good standard mini trapper in my collection, perhaps it will be my next purchase! Thanks for sticking up for the Spey blade, I thought it was useless at first my main EDC being a Case medium stockman it was always on me so I have since warmed up to it and appreciate it greatly. It’s The best box opener there is!
The walk and talk on the Trapper is always the best of the best even on a Chinese made knife. Such a satisfying click that it makes when the blade shuts and they always have good lockup. I wish medium stockmans were at this same level!
You’re right, mini trappers do usually have a great action! Most of the med. stockmans I’ve had did as well

Great video, brother. Just FWIW, it is "Antique Bone Barnboard." Usually has that darker tint on the scales. The Natural Barnboard is quite a bit lighter. Love those natural Barnboards. Good job on this vid, and great collection.

I know this is a bit of a late reply but one other thing the spy blade is good for is fleshing hides, like deer hides, raccoon etc. love the video! Nice collection. 👍🏻
Interesting. Recently I became curious about Trapper variations, added blades. blade locks, opening mechanisms. I've always liked the Trapper pattern and my original trapper is a Case with a yellow delrin handle I bought from a hardware store that was discontinuing thei Case line. That was long ago. My take on the Trapper pattern and the spey blade is that you can field dress a deer with it. I keep the spey blade razor sharp and use it for cutting artiocles out of paper and things like that while I use the California clip blade for rougher work. Two of the prettiest trap;pers that I have is a Kershaw mini trapper with a red bone handle and a Bear and son's with a rose wood handle.
I was indifferent to the spey blade until I found a wharncliffe trapper. Now that's my favorite trapper.

To change or alter the color of the bone covers or handle,is to use paste wax shoe polish.I’ve been using it for years to make my knives look like I want them to.Brown,tan,cordovan,black.Mix a couple of different colors together and have at it.Just remember that you don’t get but one chance depending on how you do it.

Clip blade is my food prep blade. Keep sharp delicate cutting. My Spey is the work blade. Strip wire, scrape gasket, cut cardboard I’m not scared to dull that blade cause it’s a work horse. The cv holds a good edge and easy to sharpen.
I started this year giving my one nephew a knife for Christmas because hes old enough to actually have a real truck driving job and not have to sell everything when the farming season is over. I also gave him an old rifle i shortened the stock down on for his girlfriend to use. Hes been going out with her for at least four years now and she likes to go deer hunting on her dads farm

In regards to the spey blade, I personally don't care for it but it doesn't make me hate the Trapper Pattern knife. My dislike of It is based on my uses and tasks. I love the primary clip point and would like to have a trapper with a Warnclift blade as the secondary. I actually have a Case Hobo Trapper that I often carry with me when I go out to eat because you just never know if the restaurants are going to have those flimsy utensils made of crappy thin sheet metal.
I have considered getting a Case Trapper in CV, because I prefer it as well, and modifying the Spey blade into a Warnclift. I've also considered getting a cheap Rough Rider and modifying it first and carrying it to see if I'd want to do that with a Case. My father carried a Large Stockman in CV for a very long time even after breaking and reprofiling the main blade a couple times. He got another one later on but just didn't care for it as much because it wasn't the same color/pattern bone handles. They stopped making it we've heard. I don't remember offhand what it was called.
Stockman is probably my go to pattern just because it's extra blade the sheepsfoot adds a lot of versatility but the Copperhead has become my favorite pattern because it doesn't have the spey blade. I don't exactly need the spey most of the time, the pen blade is more useful to me. That being said, I have been using my 1095 SMKW case trapper a lot of late. It is a joy to use and sharpen. I personally like just grabbing all of the patterns in the classic amber jig bone.

Nice collection buddy and I couldnt agree more with ya on the spey I've carried a case knife all my adult life trappers and medium stockman are my go twos put a edge on it and use it lol people definitely get bent out of shape over little things
I personally just find the tip of spey blades to sometimes be tricky to sharpen. It really is dependent from one to another. I have a few trappers myself and like them but find my go to pattern to be the stockman specifically the 3.5 inch to 5 inch patterns. I like my self a good large to jumbo stockman/cattle knife. I use the sheepsfoot the most on the stockman. When I carry a trapper I will typically add a shepherds knife to the pocket just to have a sheepsfoot available to me.
I'm a stockman kinda hick.
For me, the spey is there to abuse.
It's great to have when you're cutting through something onto a hard surface. It also makes a handy scraper and light pry.

Hey guys I just wanted to make a pinned comment that hopefully y’all will see and maybe shed some light on the premise of this video. So- the idea for this video was to discuss the “Hate” for the Spey blade in a trapper knife that would be carried by the average person. I’ve notice that most of the comments left on this video (and I appreciate them all!) seem to go something like this- “I skin deer with my Spey blade” or “I use my Spey blade to process squirrels” or any sort of skinning/ meat processing work. And while I applaud all of you for carrying on the tradition because I’m an avid outdoorsman myself the idea of this video was to show the “non-hunters” and “non-outdoorsmen” that there were many if not any and all chores that can be done with the Spey blade, and that’s why my examples were things such as opening packages, cutting straps and rope, sharpening a pencil, peeling an apple, etc… skinning game was sort of the kind of task that a lot of younger/less experienced knife enthusiast find irrelevant in todays society and therefore that’s why they find the Spey blade so useless. So once again I applaud all you fine men for skinning and processing game/fish with your Spey blades but the real idea for the video was to show the more day to day things you could do with the Spey blade 👍🏼
I get what your saying but you got the wrong model for what you want to do with it maybe you should go for a barlow it fits the bill more than a trapper that is why you got out door fellas talking about what they do with a out doors knife
@@thronebreaker6950 I appreciate you watching, and I appreciate your comment, but you’ve totally missed the point… the video was never about what knife I or anyone else “chose” it is simply about all the people on TH-cam and Instagram that I see saying the trapper is useless in today’s world because people aren’t castrating animals anymore and or many aren’t skinning/processing animals. And so my take is that even on simple everyday tasks such as peeling an apple, cutting a rope, maybe sharpening a carpenters pencil etc. the Spey blade will perform just at well as the clip. And so the pinned comment that you have replied to was only to clarify that yes the Spey blade is obviously good at skinning and processing meat because that parallels what it was designed for and to suggest that it also has the ability to perform all the tasks I just mentioned. And therefore it is not “useless” even to the city boy that isn’t castrating and skinning deer. It was never about knife choice as you’ve suggested. I have almost every popular pattern in my collection it’s not about that at all.
I get it but at the end of it all that is a model made for the out doors hints why it is called the trapper. I suggested the barlow because it is a working man's model for doing everyday task I'm not saying your wrong but everyone buying a trapper and expecting ot to do non trapper things is going to be disappointed with the spay blade. But a knife is a knife at the end of the day.

I don’t like a barlow particularly because I have huge hands… all I’m saying is a Spey blade will cut just like a clip point at the end of the day. I even showed in the video how similar (all but the tip) the two blade profiles are. I’m not sure what else to say at this point.
Understandable. On your point I am putting out there if people think a blade is useless for what they are trying to do with it simply switch to something more fitting to the job. That a tool was made for instead of using a tool made for a different job but at the end of it all I appreciate you utilizing traditional knives and praising them all the same
Hey fellow knife lovers, When I first got into collecting knives in 2014 I started with Case Knives. I have 75 case knives in all there patterns and handle scales. I’ve never used any of them and I have all the box’s for them. I am trying to sell my whole collection. I have genuine stag knives and Buffalo horn and 2,000 year old wood knives with the papers for it. Dominick
Sounds like quite the collection. The 2000-year-old wood knife sounds interesting.
I am not a trapper fan, I prefer the stockman. Stockman knives also have spey blades. I have re-examined my view on the spey blade. On almost every trapper or stockman that I have ever owned the spey blade is the sharpest blade on the knife. That is due to the excellent hollow grind that manufactures put on the spey blade. The spey blade is the best design for skinning an animal. That blade shape will prevent punching holes in the hide. I carry a trapper quite a lot during the summer as I have found that the spey blade is the best tomato sliver I can have in my pocket. It gets used every day at lunch. One last note on the spey blade, look up a surgeon’s scalpel. You will find that the shape is very much like a scalpel. If you are every in a life or death emergency situation that requires someone to be cut on, the spey blade would make the nicest cuts. Maybe it should be referred to as the scalpel blade instead of the spey blade.
My wife and I were on vacation in California back in the 80's and we drove thru the redwood forest. I pulled out into a rest stop and we hiked a little ways back into forest to experience all the giant redwoods. At the base of one tree was a brand new Puma Hunter. We waited around the side of the road for a little while, but no one showed up, so I put the knife in my pocket and drove down the road. I was managing a cattle feedlot at the time southwest of Phoenix, Arizona. I would receive about 60 calves a month, half of them heifers and the other half bulls calves that weighed approximately 250 lbs. I used that Puma knife for 3 years castrating a little over 1,000 head. I sharped it so many times that it could no longer hold an edge. I'm 75 yrs. old now and I still have the Puma, but only pull it out occasionally to reminisce about the "good old days" I spent as a feedlot cowboy.

No use for a spey blade can actually be a reason to carry it. That useless blade is pretty handy when that clip blade you ALWAYS use, and been meaning to sharpen these last three years, finally gets so dull you can't cut spaghetti with it.
Liked the video, was recommended, it's unusual that TH-cam suggests something I like...I used to have a rather large collection, around 350 pockets and bowies. A couple of your Trappers brought back some memories. They were all pretty much destroyed in a house fire about 10 years ago. Just started rebuilding it last year. Love a Case Trapper, or any Case for that matter.
There's only one blade that's useless...a dull one.

And you can use clip blade to pierce all day long IF you always pit positive pressure on blade while piercing, and for added safety if you wish, use the pinch grip when doing it.
As someone who gets made fun of for finding the shape of a Spey beautiful I think it’s more of an aesthetic thing for people than a functional

I completely agree, matter of fact, I use the spey blade way more than I use the clip point.
Also, Case doesn't make nearly enough CV/carbon blades.
The spey blade is a great blade for skinning. I have used a Case XX Trapper for decades when I go deer hunting the the belly of the spey blade makes quick work of skinning out a deer. I for one love that blade shape. But then I am not a knife collector per say, I am a deer hunter that will take between 3 and 5 deer a season for meat.

I am a huge Trapper fan. I love my Case trapper.(just have one so far.) Those are super nice! How did you get all the good ones? oh yah gifts and ebay. How did you get all the perfect Cases? Ive gotten 2 bad ones that almost turned me off. That jimping is awesome! Amazing Deals on all of them! Id buy them all day for under $50 if I could find them.
Well they’re not all “perfect” but they are all well within what I consider acceptable. I won’t buy a case knife sight unseen. Too risky. However I do buy a lot infinites off eBay if the seller has good pictures or is willing to send me extra pics of the things I like to check for. I’ve had pretty good luck this way. Or otherwise buy from a local place where you can pick through the inventory to select a good one.

The problem with me and live-streaming is that where I live I have ZERO internet signal. I literally have to record my videos at home and wait till I get to work to upload them. our home internet is also through our cell phone plan using a hotspot so it barely does enough to get the kids through their schoolwork. We also live way out where they haven’t run any kind of fiber or dsl yet. I really appreciate The invite though!

in my little cityboy brain the trapper makes perfect sense. right now i´m using a minitrapper at work to dull down the speyblade...once thats done the mini trapper will be my picnic and bbq knife. its a perfect butter knife!

I tend to use it like a skinner blade for game. Eating blade for steak n taters round the fire lmao. For a single blade I like the swingguard/cheetah, will change it out for the large trapper sometimes and just got another. And always a medium stockman handy...
I have inherited two genuine Russel Green River pattern skinning knives, both at least 80 years old. They used to be used skinning steers and sheep. As I’m nearly as old as those knives I now buy untrimmed cuts of beef and use them to cut the fat and silver skin. Trimming those are quite like skinning.
I'm not a hunter, but do a fair bit of general camping, gardening, and cooking. The really long trappers aren't my favorite, but I love the 3.5" size for the pattern. As far as speys, I find them more useful in that size or on a stockman and love the more curved shapes. It's a small skinning blade. I like them better for peeling fruit, processing chili peppers, rocking motions on a cutting board, opening boxes where you don't want to stab too much, some whittling tasks, and they often have a nicer shape for cutting rope and nipping fruit off plants. Carrying nothing but a stockman for 6 months and doing ALL size appropriate chores, tasks, and food prep was a great exercise for learning blade shape uses.😂

Rough Ryder has decent knives as does Marbles and Brother (which I just picked up one). Case is just a step up from those brands. My Case knives are all inherited from my father and a couple were my grandfather’s.
I saw this video a few weeks ago looking for Case knives and have to agree with you on the spay blade. Why in the world anyone would be hung up over it. I think it’s great and use mine to peel and slice meat, cheese and on fruits.
Exactly and a lot of people kinda missed the point of this video, obviously the Spey blade can skin an animal or process a deer, that’s pretty much the same kinda thing it was designed for, my point of this video was to show the “everyday” things you can use the Spey blade for. Sharpening a pencil, cutting rope and cardboard, slicing/peeling fruit, stuff like that. Because while us country boys know how to use a Spey blade for it’s Intended purpose, it’s those younger guys who will never kill a deer or castrate an animal that I feel don’t like/understand the Spey blade…

The spey blade is used for skinning without puncturing the hide and my dad always used his for cutting his meat, as do I. It is also good for spreading peanut butter,potted meat,anything you might use a butter knife for.

The spay blade was not intended for castration. It was intended to be a skinning blade that wouldn't accidentally poke a hole in an expensive hide. The warren or sheep's foot on a stockman knife was meant to be for castration.

About the spay blade, as a fight'n rooster collector that is the go to blade for me. I have always used the spay blade to do what ever I need to use a knife for. Except to eat with or to gently poke something like a splinter. PS I do have case knives also so don't hate on my fight'n Roosters to much. Us the spay and don't scare up the clip.
I actually like the clip blade on the Boker Trappers a little more than the Case because they dont have that round spot right before the tip. They are more pointy.
i use the spey blade when carving spirals in walking sticks.
Great collection! I don't get the spey blade hate thing either. It either cuts or it doesn't, it works ir it doesn't for the purpose you. It could be shaped like a dolphin and if it worked then carry on 😂 Just curious what's your take on Case Russlock knives? I've been looking at them and thinking about trying one just haven't pulled the trigger. Thanks for sharing.

Sweet collection. I like Spey blades, for whatever reason they always end up being my sharpest blade. Perhaps they are not photogenic enough for Instagram?
They’re definitely no as attractive as a nice clip point, but I just hear a lot of guys acting like the Spey blade is “useless” in modern times because most of the population aren’t castrating farm animals these days, and so my whole idea for this video was to show that simply as a knife blade the Spey is just as capable at achieving daily tasks as it partner the clip blade, I even went as far as to show how the edge profiles are even very similar to further show that when it comes to cutting rope or peeling fruit or cutting tape, the Spey is just another blade and shouldn’t be hated on because of its name and design
I carried a USA made schrade old timer trapper and field dressed many deer with the spay blade for over 20 years with that knife until 2021 when I lost it after dressing out big 8 pointer and laid it on the ground. Looked for that knife for hours.

That Spey blade is my most used blade. Everything from making peanut butter sandwiches to auto repair.
Always use my Spey blade for the slicier cutting tasks at work always sharper I love my carbon steel lockback trapper
I also have three mini trappers, which I prefer more than the regular trapper.
Also don't see what the fuss is about the spey blade, it's sharp and can be used. Spent a few childhood summers on my grandparents' farm in the Philippines, but never saw any spaying, and nobody had folding knives there.
