I had the fortune of experiencing Jack Coopers' hospitality back in the mid eighties. Ray Best was our guide and a super guide he was. This video sure brings back great memories. Thanks again to Jack and Ray!
Two of my idles growing up. Lee did what I only could dream of. He was ahead of time when it came to conservation. Curt Gowdy voice brings back memories of my dad and me glued to our first TV watching his TV show. I suggest you all purchase Lee's CD set pretty cool
What an inspiring film. I just took up the fly tying end of the sport while caring for my wife at home. I will never live long enough to recover the money invested but love tying flies. Lee Wulff's flies are amazing. I can't believe he tied in hand while on the trip! I have all the modern tools and I think he tied faster in hand than I tie with all my tools. Anyway, I would love to fish those waters and catch some fish. I don't need to catch huge ones, just fish that give a good fight for the size and release them. I do like a good trout dinner but those fish would feed five adults! All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean
Amazing - compared to modern "fishing" shows there are no product endorsements of tackle, boats or even airplanes! The focus is on fishing and conservation rather than what brand of rods, reels and canoe they are using.
I remember Lee Wulff when I was a young man cruising the docks at Rideouts Sporting Camps in Maine, Lee always stop at my Dads Seaplane Base in Davenport Cove on East Grand Lake to refuel his Super Cub on his way up to Labrador , He always drew lots of attention in the dining room and his arrival was always well announced ahead of time. He was a neat guy and certainly ahead of his time , he looks about how I remember him in this movie, so I am guessing this is era mid 1960's?? So I am guessing in his early 60's. I have visited his camps in Newfoundland and Labrador and talked with many fishermen that knew him and fished with him and he was most certainly a very noted angler then and now. Its interesting to note that Lee had his name painted on the side of that Cub and at that same time many of the Alaskan Outfitters used to do that a lot , but you hardly ever see that anymore in todays climate.........................
Yep you and 10,000 more and there are no fish in any frying pan for anybody. You do realize the thousands of years of these ecosystems can be eliminated within just a couple of years with today's technology just sayin
There's no argument about mother nature however the data is clear with regards to all natural resources and the direct and indirect pressures exerted via humans . Salmo salar, Salmo fontinalis, Morone saxatilis, Gadus morhua just to name a few teleost species whom have been subjected to intense and many times unregulated pressures; which brought to today's crisis situation especially with the cod. This is about good stewardship mother nature will certainly will the void we create however we may not be happy with what she gives us. From all I have seen she has given the best of best and apparently that's good enough we want to take it all. Many of us are blind to these gifts more precious than gold and yet look how we treat it.
Wonderful and amazing flyfishing and awesome video. One cannot listen to Curt Gowdy's gravely voice and look upon Lee's face and not be enlightened by the coversations on this Video. Good on you for the upload. OWAA Outdoor Writer - Joe Guide
I hope to make it up there some day . I have 14 videos of Lee and Joan on disc . Love to watch them over the winter to get the juices going . Lee was so ahead of his time. What a way to live life.
Check our our website, David! We still maintain the same standards of catch and release as Lee. We've been running Minipi for the past 38 years: www.minipi.com.
It's amazing how big of a difference how we handle fish now compare to back in the days; when fish was plentiful. If we see how someone handles a fish like that Gowdy guy, he would get lots and lots of negative comments. nice video, thx for sharing.
When you put together great genetics, habitat quality and the right trophic structure, you get the legendary Minipi brookies. We love creating habitat for sensitive species of trout and salmon.
Enjoy watching these old clips, what they caught and what they were using. Looks like a J W Youngs "Beaudex" reel Lee has and some version of a Hardy... Lightweight perhaps.
It's interesting to see the beginning of the shift in the "wilderness ethic." On one hand, trashing out a spot to put a tent and build a fire and on the other talking about the preservation of the area. Despite the corny production values, its really a neat video to watch. A lot of tight shots of their faces.
+inmyriver65 tiny fire and im sure the tent hurt nothing. far from trashing the spot. im sure they didnt leave garbage everywhere either like people today would
Imagine actually being the guy who invented the Wulff series of flies and still being that authentic and low-key...a different generation from the days of don trump jr for sure!!
I have been fortunate enough to fish pristine waters for a variety of fish in Texas. Now, just as Mr. Gowdy predicted, it is all about the lease dollar with no regard to water quality or conservation. My O my has the attitude of landowners changed over the years. The almighty dollar rules and the government keeps coming up with ways to take more and give nothing.
Excellent movie. But this movie proves he liked to eat what he caught besides. Sure don't keep them all. But the catch & release profiteers want you to believe differently.
Love the bright colors on your flies, today everyone is so hung up on trying to make flies look to realistic! Old school flies.
All I tie is flashy flys and I have amazing luck

I really enjoyed this video. I love how it's actually about fishing, not full of thinly disguised product endorsements!
just Mr. Gowdy's voice brings back good memories . One of the FEW shows my dad would sit through and watch
Ain't that the truth. Dad would watch NFL on Sunday and American Sportsman. I miss those Sunday afternoons with dad growling "that damn Phil Harris!"
What a gem of a video! I was about 5 years old!
My Grandpa and Curt are catching those big trout in heaven right now.
This video is absolutely amazing from beginning til end. Just wish someday I can catch a brook trout half those sizes. Wow 👏
These two gentlemen inspired my fly fishing which began back back in the early 80's!

words of wisdom. No one wants to take the steps to preserve them. They knew back then.

amen
such a great time , places and people. I have read all Wulff's books, long time ago, now its time for the movies.

Your memories will live on thank you both for saving the future and for being Great Sportsman!!!
Thank you the Vermonter
I have fished there twice. Watching big Brookies porpoise onto a skated fly is an awesome experience.
The narrative of preservation is more critical today then ever growing up these guys where my heroes

@@JackCooperCoopersMinipiLodges You do a great job Jack. Imho the rubber netting has contributed to a healthy fishery as well....kudos.
I would say that surface skater mimics a mouse pretty well! Cool video!
that is a super bit of footage, those boy s new the importance of catch and release even in totally wild places, can t wait to try that skating fly ;-]

This made my Sunday! Great film thank you!
I have this on VCR ! Thanks for sharing Jack !
That tent was a free standing tent like a modern big agnes tent. Very impressive 👍
That was great to watch thanks
WOW to be able or privileged enough to fish in a place like that.
Catch-photograph-release all the way...... :-)
Great to see, Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks for sharing!
you gotta love the great north woods!!
Wow so EPIC!!!!!
I hope that Labrador brook trout fishing stays this way. Amazing size to those brookies. Never seen anything like it.
Love the noise of that drag.
Enjoy watching these old clips, what they caught and what they were using. Looks like a J W Youngs "Beaudex" reel Lee has and some version of a Hardy... Lightweight perhaps.
The beginning of ‘mousing’? 🤘
Only in rescent years sadly people have gone in there on skidoos in the winter time and caught them up. Sorry Mr. Wulff

Some big brookies.
The Wooded Beardsman yup some of those lake have never been fished before
Nice fish!
Great Guys ,Days Areas in area :)
LOL!
No life jackets on in the canoe and waders. The good ol' days!
thus was when eating fish was still cool these catch and release snobs need to see thiswhat fishing is all about.
Looking at the video there is just no way that Mr. Wulff is "around 81". Maybe his mid 60's at the most.
was there a special featuring Lee in Guatemala searching for tarpon?
Let's keep Minipie a quiet secret
if one day i can tie a fly as good as mr wulff i will be a happy man
those are some big brooks..
I've called him like that from forked Lake
Yeah Lee...You're not getting any big ones yet.
Must be nice to have those sentiments while catching 5#'ers
THOSE STRIKES!!! daymn
Using Garcia glass rods probably…and maybe even Martin reels
Imagine actually being the guy who invented the Wulff series of flies and still being that authentic and low-key...a different generation from the days of don trump jr for sure!!
Those old martins had full time ratchets
I can just hear those two talking smack about their Outdoor Pursuits as they throwback some Wild turkey good times great fishing.
Let's preserve this place...but let's advertise exactly where it is...and this show was pre social media. Hmmm🤔
Grew up watching A.S. and dreaming.....
Lol. The Red and Gold, Fi. Of course.
How does this video have 100,000 views....
Lee theyve gone in on skidoo in recent years unfortunately.
At 19:03 a bird sings the Bonanza theme
Most of us never see our backing, these guys hardly ever see they're fly line.
Those fish are long gone. Too much catch and grease.
