I think I would have approached this in reverse. With an airbrush, paint the blue to purple colors over a light grey or white primer. Then airbrush the grey bodysuit, followed by a little highlight and shadow. After those colors were laid down, hand paint the black to block in the dark areas. That way, the colors are blended with the airbrush which is easier and quicker than blending by hand. The black didn't look shaded, so a solid base coat of black with a hand brush and that stark contrast.
@@tabletopalchemy An alternative with the black is to paint the colors then mask off the areas that you want to keep in color, then airbrush black over the model, then removed the masking. However, the masking would be time consuming.
That's a real good job, especially for a first try at painting. Lights are well placed, the sketching is neat and clean and the overall piece has a terrific dark atmosphere that perfectly match with the drawing you took has a reference. Congrats.
Batman looks amazing, very worthy of being gifted. I think your friend will appreciate the time and effort you put into it. The Zombicide Black Plague kickstarter had a character based on Batman. It might be worth checking out.
Wow! I absolutely love how this piece turned out! I've got a couple of larger pieces on my shelf of opportunity (large edition), and I think I need to take a crack at pulling off a look like this!
Dude. I've got a backlog of your videos to catch up on. If your buddy doesn't like it, I'll take it! This is awesome! I'd bet Kelly would like it, too!
I applaud the trying something new. I have a bunch of models I am trying to figure out how best to paint with an iridescent pattern and can't bring myself to just put paint on them and try so, thank you for being brave and showing the way.
What the heck, man?! This looks dope!! You're only gonna get better with practice, but that's a helluva first shot. You're friend's gonna love it. Cheers! 🍻
Dude, love it, looks like a really good hybrid between cell shading and modell shading - definitely a style worth looking further into and try to develope even more into a stylized type thing :)
Love it and it's good to see and hear the tribulations you've gone through. I've primed a 75mm tall Hellboy red to go for a similar cel shaded vibe. It won't be done until after Christmas, my hobby space is the kitchen table and I'm not partial to sharing it. If mine comes out half as well as your Batman, I;'ll be extremely happy.
Missed your painting vids! Congrats on following through with trying a new thing. For me, it's always intimidating on a sculpt I like because then I really feel like I could butcher the damn thing. But your attempt is indeed striking and I think it gets the comic book vibe across 100%!
Dude ! I think its a really cool paint job, it's always easy to be your own biggest critic, but in my opinion it looks great. It certainly mimics the style of the original art , whilst being uniquely it's own thing. Kudos to you for trying something completely different, it's a top job mate !
Me at the start of this clip: "looks interesting, but I do not need to subscribe to another Miniature Painting Channel" Me at the end of this clip: Subscribed. I REALLY liked and appriciated the way you talk about the process and I will watch all of your other videos.
Your work on that vampire batman is rather cool. I would have that displayed with some other figures that I have had painted for me. That is going to be an epic gift. I have a friend of mine in Green Bay who is one hell of a figure painter. I will have to show him this video. He is just about one of the best figure painters I know. He can beat me by miles. Keep it up brother!
Ignatius; it's great. Your friend will love it. And, whether it's scripted or ad-libbed, I'm increasingly coming here for your linguistic and comic skills. That 'right off the bat' pun was inspired; I doubt anyone would have noticed it but for your subtle highlighting! Brilliant.
I also painted this figure and broke off the wing. But I found it :D It was a lot of fun, even though I went a different way. Your result is very, very good!
Very striking paint job. Has a real comic book/cell shaded look. As for the " looks better from 3 feet", that is always the conundrum when painting miniatures. Especially true for wargaming and model railways. In truth, a lot of fine detail is lost at distance unless there is a strong contrast. However, that can look off close up. The trick is getting a balance. That said, I am one of those people that does detailing that might only be seen close up or areas that will later be hidden by an attached backpack/cloak/gear or the underneath of a vehicle. It makes my mind happy just knowing it is there. The other thing is perserverence. It still surprises me, the number of times when I am working away, not happy, wanting to start over but stick with it that it all comes together in the end. Long way of saying to trust the process. Anyway, as you said, if you really don't like the result you can always start over. No harm, no foul.
Wise words and thanks. Yes that balance has always been elusive to me but I need to start focusing on that, I’ve always lacked contrast and this has been an exercise in forcing me to try that and I hope to apply some of that to future minis. 🍻
I can sit here and tell you, "Whoa, it looks fantastic!" and you may or may not believe me, so instead, try this. Put it away for a week or so. At least a week. Then go back and look at it. You'll most likely have a "Holy crap! I did a pretty darn good job!" moment. Because sometimes we're just too close to the project, and we see all the things we'd like to do better (they're not mistakes, they're notes for future improvement). But WHOA! It looks fantastic! :)
I had painted a porcelain Crow statue in a similar style for my mother in law. It's definitely intimidating at first, but I had my husband (a 2d artist) help identify the things that needed to pop when bringing the comic style to a 3d space. The most important thing was realizing there were no mid tones in a traditional sentence. The comic is black and white, but any shadow was done with hatching. So carrying that into the statue, it took a lot of time and trimming a brush to be the smallest it could be, but I faded the highlights out using hatching instead of a proper gradient or feathering the ways I was used to. She ended up really liking it and it was displayed in the living room before her cat knocked it down. I want to find another statue like that because bringing comics into 3d is such a fun technique and I'd encourage any model painter to give it a shot. And definitely take liberties, sometimes a hard block of color looks better for the style in the original art than it will on a model not intended for that style
Ooh The Crow, very cool! I took a bunch of people to see the original flick multiple times in theaters lol, and I still have the graphic novel somewhere. You bring up some wise points too, thank you! 🏴☠️🍻
Looks great. Ive seen similar styles where they work in the inverse, doing all their color blocking and then directly painting in the solid black shadows. The orange background final shot really helps it pop, I fear you have to paint the dome now.
Dang it, I’m fearing that too lol. Yes someone else also suggested the inverse color process and I think that would be cool to try out as well. So many things to try! 🍻
Very cool paint job. Under a cloche, on a shelf, I think it will look amaze-balls. You sir, are a good friend to have. This project has sparked an idea.. I have been watching a fellow on YT that professionally paints minis using oil paints. He mixes blue and brown to get a quite pleasing black. I reckon I might see if Etsy has a mini available. I already have several cloche in a cupboard under the sink. A few years ago I got a mate the Miller graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. This might be a call back to that. I might add a thin airbrushed on, black oil-wash as a final touch. Thanks for the inspiration.
No shortage of cool minis on Etsy! Thanks man glad you like it - and I got the cloche yesterday and it doesn’t look too shabby in there! Give it a try! 🍻
I've seen people that paint over some beautiful antiques. I couldn't imagine painting that Batman any other way, because it's a sculpture of the comic, and you made it look just like the comic, it looks great, especially the ears. If you did it traditional, it would look like a bad version of that comic.
@@tabletopalchemy You did a good job, I got the same feel from the sculpture as I did the comic it's better than you think. High contrast is always something I shied away from in my artwork, it's time for change.
Great idea and the result is also pretty cool. I think the what makes you unsure about the style is that the schwand edges are very sharp in the 2d drawing style and this is hard to to with a brush on the small Modell 😊
I have a few larger scale models I've 3d printed and painted, Constantine, Swamp thing bust and some other 1/10 scale stuff, up close I can see every mistake but on the other side of my room, on a shelf they look great. As for losing bits - I lost Constantine's ciggie and it bugs the hell out of me.
I think for a style you have never tried before it turned out really great! Keep in mind if you also like this sculpt and the print was not too expensive, get one for yourself and try a more traditional paint style and see how it turns out.
