    Talk about twists and turns. I started watching “History is made at night” and thought it was a romance melodrama and then it became a murder mystery before making a transition to a screwball comedy and it took a really strange turn on the boat as a cliffhanger. I never expected anything like that

    Ah man, it warms my heart to see people excited about silent cinema! and YES dude, I was going to say my favourite Lloyd film is The Kid Brother and you should consider checking that one out. It's SO much fun, great comedy, and the third act is so action packed and thrilling. Speedy is wonderful, and while I own The Freshman, I haven't actually watched it yet! I've heard it pronounced Frank Bor-zay-gee, but someone has "well ACTUALLY"d me on that... Bringing Up Baby is so funny, but the dialogue is SO fast paced and insane, it's so draining after two hours haha. Great chemistry with Grant and Hepburn though, I definitely have to buy that one. Great pickups man! Your editing is very entertaining, and your channel is quickly becoming a favourite :)

    • @maplestreetmovies
      @maplestreetmovies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much!! Means a ton! I’m so excited to see The Kid Brother!! Ok so someone else has commented that’s how you pronounce his last name so I’m going with that. And yes Bringing Up Baby is crazy! Reminds me of His Girl Friday with its fast dialogue.

    • @RazorwireReviews
      @RazorwireReviews 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maplestreetmovies Yeah I think given your enjoyment of Lloyd's other films you'll definitely at least really enjoy The Kid Brother. I absolutely love the three silent films Frank Borzage made with Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor. (Two of them counted towards Gaynor's Oscar win for Best Actress at the first ever Academy Awards.) I have French blu-rays of them, but I hope Criterion maybe picks them up one day. Yeah quite similar to His Girl Friday! And The Philadelphia Story too, which is another really good one.

      Anyway, you can buy discounted Barnes And Noble gift certificates at Raise or the Raise app, so you can still stack up discounts. I’m not sure if keeping the membership is worth it now or just shift that membership to the Criterion streaming channel 🤔🧐

    SAFETY LAST is not just one of my favorite silents; it's one of my favorite films period. I also got around to watching my copy of THE FRESHMAN back in January. Cringe comedy at its silent film finest. I still need to see both THE KID BROTHER and SPEEDY, but I have both on my shelf.
    MOONRISE was my first Borzage film and also one of the earliest I saw on the Criterion Channel, though I have yet to acquire the Blu-ray. Incredible film. I'm eager to acquire HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT. I know nothing about it. BTW, THE MORTAL STORM was just released by Warner Archive last November. I bought it in their final 4 for $44 sale a few months ago, and I'll just say it's my #5 favorite film I'm seen so far this year.
    I just blind bought THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS from the B2G1 sale last month. Excited for more Welles.
    I also saw MIRROR nearly 3 years ago, back when I was still trying to get a handle on who Tarkovsky was. I didn't really get it at the time, but I've been anxiously waiting for this release so I can both revisit it and complete my Blu-ray collection of Tarkovsky's narrative films. This was the last one I needed.
    I've discovered I have much love for classic screwball comedy, and BRINGING UP BABY is no exception, yet another I watched back in the FilmStruck days. I won't be getting it at this time, but it's a certainty for the future.
    I've bought far more than enough lately, so I expect my own haul to stay limited to the World of Wong Kar Wai set I grabbed pre-sale, MIRROR, which I was going to wait on but I was jealous of everybody and their brother getting it, and GATE OF HELL, since Amazon had it backordered to August, and it's one of the cheaper barebones titles.

    This was my first time year getting into criterion Blu-ray’s so I went all out. I got A Man Escaped, Brazil, Deep Cover, Election, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Ghost Dog, House, Memories of Murder, Mirror, Mulholland Drive, Pan’s Labyrinth, Paths of Glory, Repo Man & Some Like it Hot. Then to top it off I got the complete Jacques Demy and Wong Kar Wai set. I’m content with not spending money on criterion till next 50% off sale…

    I loved "The Cameraman" with Harold Lloyd. I wasn't a big fan of "The Kid Brother" though, but I also own "The Freshman" and "Safety Last". "Merrily we go to Hell" is so excellent. Do you own "The Story Of Temple Drake"? - this is an awesome pre-code movie! You will have so much fun watching "Elevator To The Gallows". I didn't like "Nightmare Alley" on DVD, so I will not buy this one on BluRay, although I am a big Film Noir fan. You bought two titles which are on my list, but I am not sure: "Defending your life" and "History is Made at night". I recommend "Now, Voyager", "The Palm Beach Story", "The Lady Eve", "In A Lonely Place", "The Wages Of Fear", "The Breaking Point", "Il Sorpasso" and "In Cold Blood" to you.

    Unfortunately, I felt the same way after Elevator to the Gallows. I loved Miles Davis' score for the film, but not much outside of that.
    So far I have picked up - The American Friend, Antichrist, The Parallax View, War of the Worlds, Pale Flower, The Color of Pomegranates, and Mirror. I had been putting off Antichrist and Pomegranates for the last few sales.

    I think I'm all caught up on my Criterion Collection. I just picked up Memories of Murder and Fast Times at Ridgemont High before the sale earlier this year.
    I also cleared out a ton of Blus from my Collection that I realized I'd never watch again: Godzilla, Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, Lady Snowblood, Darjeeling Limited (I HATED this film!), The Lodger, Jabberwocky, The Awful Truth, His Girl Friday (I much prefer The Philadelphia Story: Cary Grant AND Jimmy Stewart! How can you go wrong?!), Two Lane Blacktop, Scanners, Videodrome, Slacker, The Hidden Fortress, Kwaidan, The Killers, I Married a Witch, Traffic, and The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.
    I enjoyed seeing your pickups from the sale. Safety Last is fun! I want Harold Lloyd's film Hot Water to be remastered on Blu. I think it's a lot funnier than Safety Last.
    Glad to hear your plasma selling is going better than mine! The second time I sold plasma, they put the needle in wrong and couldn't switch to the other arm cause my veins are so small. They had me wait 15 mins, drink a Gatorade, and then let me leave. And they still paid me which was nice. I just haven't been back since.
    The 12 seconds of Forest Day track was just...chef's kiss! Great video as always, Nathan.

      @maplestreetmovies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love to hear you sold some many Criterions because I’m the same exact way! If I see one and don’t care for it, I sell it! In fact I just sold The Taste of Cherry and have Orpheus for sale on eBay right now! I sold Godzilla in the past too 🤣 I want to see all of Lloyds full length movies now, so I’ll probably get to hit water eventually! And I’m glad the 12 seconds landed 😂

    I also don't know how to pronounced BORZAGE but it is Italian so it would have three syllables. As for Charles Boyer, it's BOY-YAY. I know that because I was around when he was around. As for Harold Lloyd, although he will probably always hold down the third position after Chaplin and Keaton, he was a great artist in his own right and an amazing acrobat. The glasses present an incongruity that he was looking to effect.
    I'm also a big fan of Louis Malle's first film, ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS. I see that you're flirting with buying it. Well, I would recommend getting it for two very good reasons: it has Jeanne Moreau who...well, she's Jeanne Moreau; and secondly, the score by Miles Davis. I could add that it's a joy to watch so I will. Don't sleep on that one, as they say.

    • @maplestreetmovies
      @maplestreetmovies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for clarifying Charles’ last name pronunciation! I seem to mess up on these older stars 😂 when I first mentioned Charles Laughton I pronounced it “Laugh-ton”. And I’ve since checked out Elevator to the Gallows and I enjoyed it, I just found it a bit boring unfortunately 🥲

    • @jacobmartin7481
      @jacobmartin7481 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maplestreetmovies Sadly there's no directors cut of The Magnificent Ambersons at the moment as the deleted footage is sadly lost. A 2 hour 15 minute movie which Orson Welles believed would be his greatest work was botched down to 90 minute film with a reshot "happy" ending, which is sadly the only cut available. There are fans of the film though, as evidenced by its Criterion release, but personally, the film felt very incomplete because of the missing pieces. Definitely give the film a chance, as you might still find beauty within the cracks, but I'm not a fan personally.
